Шипр (Chypre)

The classic 19th century cologne Shipr features a great opening with a massive blast of civet and some geranium/rose. My EdC performs like an aftershave, with most of the weight up top and only a subtle heart accord. I tried to put a lot on but 45 minutes later it's a quiet, pleasant skin scent of amber, oakmoss, and civet. Would love an EdT/EdP of this. Nothing in this fragrance gives me a powdery vibe at all – it's more moist and translucent with the sharp bergamot top and glowing amber. Definitely not rosewater either – Shipr would benefit from a more prominent floral accord, imo. Perhaps reformulation, as this juice is dirt cheap – it performs far above its price point. The likeable base accord of oakmoss, amber, and civet glows beautifully as a skin scent for many hours. Dating from the same year as Jicky, Shipr of course has no lavender and is far simpler, but carries a similar ultra-vintage dandy vibe. The base accord is absolutely terrific. You really can't go wrong with tons of civet, labdanum, and oakmoss, with vanilla and patchouli accents. Next time I'll be dousing myself so this accord can really bloom. Terrific stuff! I actually would like to pick up several more bottles of this and add my own ingredients (after all the splash opening is big!). You could make a Jicky variation with lavender and rose; or a masculine spicy green chypre with coriander seed and more patchouli; or a bitter aromatic chypre with patchouli, wormwood, and lavender... the possibilities are great with this stuff. It's a bit basic and skeletal though. A theme to hang variations off – like the chypre genre itself.

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 172 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased October 2019 Sweetened moss, and dead memories of a world long forgotten and never lived again in a land most never were born nor visited. A dusted off old violin barely tuned back up to play one more song. You will be happy to smell the history in this bottle. Being a splasher the cloying part is the sweetness but as it begins to dry the sweetness blends into the rest of the scent and becomes a truly exquisite foreign market scent. Very much manly.

I love this one for a unique feature: it smells both antique and timeless. It somehow manages to smell like forest or forest farm, but without the "fresh air"-ness of open spaces, so it smells like museum. It smell at some point resembles oak leaves, rubbed in hands.

Beautiful oakmoss, like Mitsouko's skeleton. This is the best cologne I've tried, soft and interesting (if you like oakmoss), no sharpness anywhere.

This scent is the distilled essence of comforting grandparents. No matter where you are from. Poland, Russia, America, England, Spain. This scent will trigger some primal nostalgia. It is affordable enough that you can use it to infuse powders and make room sprays from it. Fill your life with comfort. It absolutely smells like the dressing table of your great-grandmother or grandmother. Like all of the vintage toiletries all in one. It smells like an estate sale, but not in a dusty sense. Make-up brushes which have been used for decades with classic make-up take on this genre of scent. The wardrobe where your grandfather's suits hang. The powdered drawer liners. But it is still fresh and green and living, not a morbid, dead powdery scent. A universal Western scent.

In Russia you can find the Shipr for about 50-55 rubles, 0.74$. They use it as after shave balsam mainly. The aroma is quite nice for its price. The projection and the longevity are both poor. It lasts about 10-12 minutes or so (like Clinique Happy or Eau de Cartier.. lol !!). The main notes I get are vivid oakmoss, sandalwood, labdanum and patsouli. The other notes are weak. Generally if it was in EDT or EDP version with better longevity and projection would be an interesting masculine scent which it could be one of my best.

I purchased it off of ebay, it took a while to get since it was coming from overseas. It was cheap, but sure doesn't smell that way. It is a true gem. Very green, very relaxing. There isn't anything overpowering about it, to me it is more relaxing than anything else. I can't attest about the longevity, but I got a big 4 oz bottle so I can reapply if needed. I am really enjoying this one. I do think it is very suitable for women.

VERy unisex.I feel as if Im walking thru a huge forrest,massive tree top gently blowing in the wind.Im in the shade and the wisps of wind r cool.I reach into my back pocket and take out a green apple to eat.All feels right with the world.

Smells like rose water to me. It is a bit sweet and does not last for long. But for the price of it (less than $7) I find it as a real bargain!!

Got this from a Russian food store online. It smells like super watered down Furyo.

Greetings, My opinion about this fragrance is quite dated, as these are now quite hard to find In Northern Europe, Baltics. There used to be tons of this fragrance on supermarket shelves about 10 years ago. In general, there used to be several fragrances in similar bottles. One of them was "Sasa" and they had Russian male names. Ridiculed by many in the late 90s and early 2000s they had their own audience in Post-Soviet space. I don't want to comment on the other fragrances, but in general these colognes had some tough time 10-20 years ago, as the quality control in late 90s got very bad and people in Europe were buying these frags as: -A present to grandfather. -As a joke. -As a disinfectant for small bruises and mosquito bites. "Shipr" was by far the best in line, because it had that old barbershop, earthy musky vibe. The green color was a nice touch to it also. I would not mind owning one myself, as this fragrance in particular has that simplicity. If they manage to improve a quality a bit, this fragrance might fall into "Niche" category as it has a rich history behind it.

Either this is a very poorly formulated chypre or the idea of a chypre with no reference point. There’s nothing I can smell in its skeleton that reminds me of bergamot, labdanum and oak moss. Now, I personally adore the classic chypre perfumes of the past and present - Coty Chypre, Mitsouko, Aromatics Elixir, Magie Noire, Femme, Diaghilev, etc., but this strange blue/green liquid smells nothing like any chypre I’ve ever come across. There’s an almost medicinal edge to it, somewhat like antiseptic and old ointment. There’s a dustiness to it too - a tiny hint of formaldehyde - it’s almost indescribable. I’m sure it could be used on scrapes, cuts as disinfectant. Perhaps if I had grown up with it, I would have a more comfortable association - I have a feeling this current version is just a caricature of the vintage that’s been severely constricted and reformulated. Sigh.

Upon the recommendation of Scent Land's review, I promptly ordered this archaic Russian cologne. The imagery of castles and antiquity was irresistible. Now, having received this 19th-century potion, I can well understand why Chris enjoys owning Novaya Zarya Shipr—for historical reasons—without necessarily wearing it. In the most romantic sense, it smells archaic, antique. Shipr is a "dusty" floral, not powdery. During those quiet, contemplative, introspective periods in life, Shipr suits the occasion beautifully, providing comfort, and a feeling of absolute rightness. I like wearing it more and more. Chris's poetic description truly conveys the spirit of Novaya Zarya Shipr. Be careful what you wish for.

Greenly powdery. Seems much more like a woman's scent to my American nose. Definitely chypre, but an old-style powdery scent with leather-like tones. My modern bottle seems cheaply made and thin. Doesn't last long on the skin, but it's dirt cheap. Not going to keep it, but I had to try it when I read in a Russian blog that a perfumista recalled this scent mostly as what her grandad said they used to drink during lean times. I can't imagine drinking this!

If you mix Novaya Zarya Chypre with concentrated rose perfume in a 3:1 ratio, you'll get a Chypre perfume similar to Leningrad or vintage Chypre Coty. As for the cologne, it's excellent. It's a breath of forest nature. Like drinking a tarragon infusion in the wild forest in the summer. Lots of tart greenery, moss, sweet red-brown tree trunks, and sweet earth.

I really wish it was available for sniffing. The notes show it as a true chypre with one thing added. I reallly would enjoy this. Its sad you can find it, most modern chypre frags i've seen don't seem to have all the frame notes of a classic chypre frag. People seem to forget a chypre must have five main scent notes and the rest is there to add intrest.

Despite of it`s age, it is one of the most unisex colognes I know. As a child, I adored it and stole it from my grandpa on regular bases.It easily can grow up on you and become your signature scent - it does not have the harshness of most chypres, and to me it`s mostly oriental. I miss it.

This cologne is VERY cheap in Russia. Like the cheapest ever. Do not overpay. I did not smell it in millenia, cannot comment. Need to refresh my memories. There is Novaja Zarya store in Moscow. If you find yourself in Moscow, check it! You can find a few great frags for a song.

Just like Malegria I was stealing it from time to time from my father. Many years ago. It smelled like a ruby-red rose on a bed of wet emerald green moss in a warm, humid summer day. Aubusson's "Histoire d'amour" dry down on fabrics is the closest to what I remember.

My father had it's, and even though it's have perfume notes it's smells like alcohol! Pure medical alcohol! Men's used it's after shaved. I was a child i liked it, but then i loved everything that was called perfume

Modern formulation: Not really a chypre, there is no contrast. Its like a cheap little witch hazel aftershave for men with green dye. Worth a few euro per 100ml This is not like any classic chypre at all

This one smells like kind-hearted woman or man, someone to whom you trust, like your father or a mother, very natural and old schoolish, this is a good smell for a maniac. :)
