My Own Private Teahupo'o

I also got my 8th A Lab On Fire perfume. I like this one, though the first spray smelled of rubbing alcohol for the first 7 seconds. It quickly turned in to something lovely and enchanting. It doesn't smell anything like tea, which is what I originally thought the perfumers were referring to with the name (I am so ignorant! Haha.) As it turns out, I just learned that Teahupo'o (tear-ho-poo-oh) is a surfing destination in Tahiti, which totally makes sense, given the fragrance itself. It is Salty, fruity, vanilla/Amber. It has a quality of softness/gentleness to me. Comforting, like a mug of hot tea and a cozy blanket - moreso, in my opinion, than By The Fireplace by Replica. The name of the Replica perfume evokes the same imagery to me that My Own Private Teahupo'o's actual fragrance does. Fascinating stuff. The name of a perfume, to me, is really very important, as it sets the tone and mood of the fragrance within. While it is not my favorite perfume name, My Own Private Teahupo'o is at least a somewhat appropriate name, since it makes you think of exotic beaches and hot sun. This perfume has the amazing wide appeal I have come to expect from A Lab On Fire. Another win for them, and another win for me!

Do I love My Own Private Teahupo'o, or does it make nauseous? There's a LOT of sweet tiare. The classic combination of amber and vanilla is well-executed, but while my nose highly enjoys the added salty/marine notes, my brain remains somewhat unsettled. You know when you have the munchies and end up combining various foodstuffs in ways god never intended? The resulting Franken-meal may taste great on the way down, but in the stomach... MOPT is like that. Salty ozonic meets beachy floral meets gourmand oriental amber-y vanilla... Somehow the notes work; MOPT is a highly wearable perfume with very good performance and my friends adore it. Most of the time, so do I, though on occasion all I can think is "Franken-fragrance, Franken-fragrance".

The formulation is impossible to compel which adds to it's lure! I don't get much tea from it but the phantom of sea (a very salty sea like Celebes) changes the pot-pourri of sweet, potent notes of amber and vanilla into an unusual melancholia scent; imagine John William Waterhouse' nymphs emerging from their waters and gazing into the eyes of men. Tremendously delightful on my skin, but I can understand the negative reviews and dislikes, definitely a risky formulation, unfortunately (it's quite expensive and I cannot purchase a full bottle, have to take a little pleasure with my tester for a couple of puffs more) it agrees with my skin and haunts me like a beautiful reverie of Sicilian holidays on a work-day.

I MISSED IT 😫. I slept on a decant during a no-buy and it got discontinued. We are having a drought-stricken hot autumn that made me try hot salty ‘fumes as the day went on. The floral lilt of this was divine, but I am now remembering how I had to hunt for it on the skin. Then came Guerlains Embruns de Ylang and I moved along. These perfume styles and movements are as fascinating as art and literature, as music and dance. The hot beach day perfumes as beautiful as any, as beautiful as Rothko, Impressionism, and cock rock.

Definitely something I will repurchase once my bottle runs out - which is high praise since I have a pretty decent size collection, and running low is rare. But this is the ultimate sexy summer scent - balmy tropical flowers and hot sand. Like you're wrapped in garlands of frangipani. It's very warm and damp ambery vanilla and the salt is more a hint at the ocean breeze. This is heavy, heady, strong - will last you all day and then some. Transports me to summer immediately, even in the depths of a cold Netherlands winter.

A different and almost "playful" scent. It is very young, and presents itself with an ozonic/salty note at the beginning, which is very unusual. Over time it develops into an interesting and not predictable parfume,which surprised me by making me smile and be happy. A special fragrance and not for every day... I will use it in a few days in the fall to give myself carefree and want to smile. Good work! A Lab On Fire it always surprises me!❤ Sillage: 8.5/10 Longevity: 9./10 Scent: 9/10 Overall: 9./10

I got a 10 ml sample from a friend and loved it, it's a scent that is very inviting and lies very close to the skin, but unfortunately at the time it was already on the way out so I never got to buy a bottle for myself.

Beautiful salty vanilla with sea breeze. If you can get it cheaper than 70-80€ it's ok, otherwise i would stay with Couleur Vanille which is 80% similar but much much more natural and refined :-)

Love this! But I also am a sucker for beachy fragrances. To me- this smells like Calvin Klein reveal but with vanilla added. I’m going to be wearing this a lot during the summer!

This is the strangest perfume I've ever owned . Yes I'm in idiot ,I blind bought it . But it was like a 3rd of its rrp However ,that's where my idiocy stops . I'm glad I bought it . At 1st spray on my wrist,I smelled a summer beachy, happy floral vanilla cheery scent . Then the next day it was screechy ,can't stand it ,nope not wearing that again . I sprayed some in the box and left it for 5 days. Omg it was still there but this time ,not screechy not boak inducing but its back to being my initial impression . So here I am now with it on my wrist and I'm kinda into it again . The vanilla is prominent but its got the whole flower salty thing surrounding it . Longevity is massively long ,projection is undecided as I've not wore it around many others yet . My other half who isn't a perfume person really ( i have tried lol ) says it smells " summery ,like you'd wear on holiday " that will do me ,so far . I'll come back after a proper proper wear test K bye 👋🏻

Havent gotten serious with checking into this house yet, have only tried this and Liquid Night so far. I like MOPT better. Getting tons of vanilla/amber, almost makes me think of coconut. It's almost TO much vanilla and reminds me of scented body oils they used to sell in head-shops back in the 70's. I like it, but get my spark my interest much, and I have smelled lots of frags like this, and much cheaper. That said, it does last a good 4 to 5 hours on my skin. It never projects much. First hour, I can smell it at arms length, after that, it gets closer to my skin. My samples were free, and I dont feel compelled to buy a decant of this. I am though looking forward to trying their other perfumes. I tend to concentrate on one house at a time. I buy a bunch of samples, enough to wear and live with for a while. It takes me time to develop a love for these. Very rare that I absolutely LOVE anything on first sniff all the way through the drydown.

Now this is an odd one...but that's not to say in a bad way. Definitely get the amber and vanilla and the oceanic notes are apparent throughout in the background. To me this smells of butterscotch. I'm four hours in and every once in a while MOPT seems to waft up and it smells oddly different and pleasant. Will wear this again and update.

A spring/summer salty water, yellow floral, sweet woody vanilla. Would be a great one to wear on a warmer spring day with a fresh breeze! Not really a safe buy but if you can source a small <5ml... that would be best. Interesting for sure!!

Initial impression is sweet, sweet, sweet. And it only gets sweeter. I couldn't quite detect what it was, but definitely sensed a coconut or unripe banana scent, which was confirmed by the amyl salicylate presence. It's got a sort of candle-like waxiness to it, which is an unfortunate side effect that occurs often in fragrances with salt notes. It does feel tropical, so they got that part right in line with the branding, but it does smell very, very synthetic. I suspect this one can be a headache-inducer, so the wearer may need to be careful. Having said all that, I do like it.. in a sort of artificial room fragrance sort of way. Not as a perfume.. but as a commercial product smell. And only in short bursts.

This smells almost identical to lake and Skye 11:11. ozonic, aquatic, salty, lived in dirty skin musk at a public city beach

This is my second venture into the A Lab on Fire offerings. The first (and still my favorite), is "L'Anonyme ou OP-1475-A". In this fragrance there is vanilla, salt and amber in spades, but alas no ozonic notes that I could detect. Dries down in a matter of hours to a close-to-skin velvety,ambery/vanilla/musk note. In this regard I am in accord with 'ekdahlmark'. I have no idea what 'amyl salicylate' smells like so can't say I detected it or not. However, I don't feel it is rich enough to being considered having "...a boozy quality, due to the fact that it doesn't have a medicinal, alcoholic tinge to it which accompanies booze, nor do I get the 'butterscotch' that 'bchavi' can notice. I believe it has more of an incense vibe and reminds me of church incense sticks that I have. A similar perfume that I have which reminds me of this fragrance is Imperial Oppoponax by Les Nereides, although the picture on Fragrantica shows "Oppoponax" sans the "Imperial",but Imperial is a tad sweeter and MOPT's a bit on the drier side. MOPT is pretty much linear, no major changes I could tell. A less potent/weaker fragrance that smells similar to MOPT, (especially at the dry down, and was way cheaper for me to buy), was a recent purchase of "Suki Essence" by Weil, 3oz/100ml for $12.99 @ TJ Maxx.

I had been trying to decide whether to buy this fragrance for months, and I’m so glad I finally did. My Own Private Teahupo’o is unlike anything I’ve ever smelled before. It feels unique and creates a beautiful summer bohemian atmosphere. It isn’t just a perfume it transports me somewhere. I also tried L’Anonyme from A Lab on Fire, but it didn’t evoke any emotions for me, so I happily passed it on to a friend who enjoys it much more. Teahupo’o is a different story. I actually miss it on the days I forget to wear it. It has become part of my summer. It reminds me of being back at art workshops, surrounded by paintings and artists where days never ended and don’t have structure. I smell sensual tropical flowers, but they’re never overly sweet. The vanilla is beautifully balanced by salty, airy accents, making the composition feel effortless sexy and well blended. I wear it to immerse myself in bohemian summer and love. I will cherish the memories and emotions it brings every time I wear it.

The vanilla-amber chord is classic and nicely done here. What's unique about MOPT is the addition of gentle florals and synthetics that give it a salty/marine character. It carries this off quite cleverly, and executes--successfully, in my opinion--a well rounded story-in-scent. The heady tropical notes combine with a floral beachy vibe and portray a very specific time and place. The real question here is how much wear you'll get out of this fragrance. I can't see it as an everyday wear in a work environment, and it doesn't strike me as something you're going to want to bring with you for a night out. It's very much a daytime composition, and it brings with it more than enough longevity to last a whole day (easily 8+ hours), but it's up to the wearer to figure out how often they'll want to spend smelling like a lazy day on a tropical beach.

At first sniff, salty amberish vanilla, interesting take on vanilla!! It is sweet, but not overly..it is rich, with a boozy quality , with lots of golden amber, but still the scent isn't overly heady..then the base takes in a different direction. Not sure if it is the salicylate, but I don't like that phase, it mixes strangely with the Tahitian vanilla, giving the scent a chemical undertone, it gets a bit more masculine too...in the end, it isn't one I would buy, I like the top notes, the dry down,, a lot less....I like the brand, but this one isn't their best...now, if you love vanilla, you might find it quite intriguing.
