Coat Check

(tested in 2026, reformulated version) I'm getting dark, sticky, fruity cigarettes or rolling tobacco. No anise, no smokiness but definitely agree with previous reviewers on the jaminess and a certain booziness. I find Coat Check to be very evocative and immersive. It exudes warmth. A deep scent, making you think of plush velvet settees, amber liquid in crystal tumblers, low lighting, hushed conversation, soft jazz from speakers. If a man wore it to our date, I'd feel intimidated but intrigued. If a woman wore it, I'd fall in love immediately. After 20-30 mins turns into more of a straightforward deep tobacco scent on my skin. After 1h fades to a vague ambery scent, not much of that booziness left. Moderate sillage for the first hour, intimate skin scent for the remaining 3. I love the first hour a lot and it's a perfume I would consider wearing and reapplying to a specific kind of date.

I love this! I can't speak to the fact that others are reminded of pipe tobacco... I have never smelled pipe tobacco. However, my dad smoked Cuban cigars way back when they were not allowed in the US. This reminds me of a Cohiba cigar, circa late 80's- early 90's. This is outstanding! No sharp edges, and no cringy dry-down... just perfect smoothness all the way... which is a great accomplishment when making a tobacco fragrance. With reference to Abel, I also love their Golden Neroli and Cobalt Amber. With reference to tobacco frags, my favs are: Coqui Coqui Tobacco, Victoria Beckham's Suite 302, ELDO Divin'Enfant, Une Nuit Nomade Memory Motel and Olympic Orchids Carolina.

There are no reviews yet, and I’m giving this a wearing straight out of the store today, so here I go! This is fantastic! It smells unmistakably close to real, unlit, aromatic pipe tobacco. My granddad used to smoke a pipe all the time, and he always had a pouch of Captain Black Royal on hand, which is nothing fancy, but I couldn’t resist a sniff when I got the chance. This juice is reminiscent of that — straight nostalgia for me! Photorealistic, long-lasting, addictive, and not oversweetened. The most exciting release for me in a long time! If you like tobacco, you’ll like this!

I tested a sample that came with my full bottle order^ their Green cedar which is my second Abel after golden neroli, and ou em gee. It's like sniffing cacao-coated salted liquorice. Then it gets saltier (what I expected in Cyan Nori but could only get musk) and chewier, then gets naked on a bed of sweet tobacco. I'm in for another full bottle when the pay check comes

Upon first spritz this is my immediate favourite out of 5 samples from the brand. A sweet honeyed tobacco with a beautiful bright fruity burst from blackcurrant. This combination is reminiscent of Sunshine Woman by Amouage, but possibly more wearable. Love this!

Unfortunately not getting any of the star anise. Too smoky for me. I'll save it for a very cold day. I should have just splurged on a new bottle of tobacco vanille.

It smells exactly like Mac Barren cherry rolling tobacco! One of the best tobacco perfumes I’ve ever tried so far, can’t stop smelling it!

You don’t get much anise with this. It comes out with the other top notes and is gone within about fifteen minutes. What this fragrance mainly is, is a light, easy to wear tobacco perfume with a little edge of fruitiness. Not much but enough to give the impression of a cherry pipe tobacco, open somewhere in the room but not actually lit in a pipe. What smokiness there is is very mild. Despite its basic diaphanous nature, Black Anise does last on skin a good six hours. I agree with what someone else here said, that it’s a nice light tobacco for summer wear if that’s your inclination.

So much lighter and ethereal than expected from the description. It's jammy (from the black currant), and I can smell cocoa shell tea on top of the pipe smoke. It's pleasant, but there's nothing smouldering here. I was expecting something deep and dark, but nothing like that. After a fruity opening, it settled into a light fruity-spicy-tobacco which was pleasant but not mysterious. Not enough depth here to call it an Oriental, imho. The anise barely comes through for me, which I am happy about. If you have ever had a cocoa tea with berry notes, this is it, but condensed a little. The drydown smells like a powdery candy on me -- like "Sweet Tarts", or crystalline cherry Jello® powder before you add the water! I have no idea when I will be in the mood to wear this again. Definitely won't purchase again. I like my darks to be deep and with heart. This kinda dials it in for me.

Out of the Abel line, this is definitely the longest lasting and with strongest sillage. To me Black Anise is much more masculine scent since it has this this darker, moodier vibe. The tobacco is so powerful, well rounded. I feel like I cannot smell the cacao. Star anis gives it mouth-watering spicyness and sweetness. And yes, I do agree with Hales, that this has very photorealistic pipe tobacco!! It's very cool that Abel have been able to create such a replica of a scent. Wonderful craftmanship. And at the same time, this was not for me. Perhaps, I would like it a bit more on a man.

Benzoin and dry smoke. Forget about the listed notes, Abel themselves describes it as “a vibrant, smoky amber”. That’s all it is. Benzoin overload and some campfire smoke. I don’t know where ya’ll getting these other notes. Power of marketing persuasion? You want a smoky spicy chocolate? Try Arquiste Anima Dulcis.

The opening of this for me was a kid's cough or cold medicine - very unpleasant. The dry-down was much better. A very soft, floral, green, sticky, earthy tobacco with a hint of anise in the background. I love the smell of anise and I expected more of that from this fragrance, but it turned out to be a nice surprise in a different direction. It leans masculine to me and I think it's a bit too light for my taste, but I think if you're a fan of a summer tobacco, this is worth a try.

Here in Berlin, Germany, it's common to drink the mate (tea) but as a lemonade, fizzy, with bubbles ("zisch") and this fragrance smells to and on me like a mate zisch with (dried) plums 💜
