Cyan Nori

This perfume is simplistic yet very unique at the same time. I have always wanted a perfume that smells like the beach, a clean beach w/ no people there. My husband and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon 31 years ago and we drove around and found a secluded spot on the beach. It was an amazing day, the sun was shining, there were no other people around except us. We had the whole beach to ourselves. I remember holding his hand and we were smiling at each other, we were so young, so happy. I breathed in deep. Hawaii usually smells like flowers everywhere and it is beautiful but I remember thinking how clean the beach smelled far away from those flowering trees and from people. I recorded that day and that smell in my memory.. I have wanted a perfume that smelled like that day on that perfect beach but I thought that would be impossible to recreate and if it could be done the perfume would be full of chemicals and I would not want it. Enter 2020 and Abel fragrance. When I smelled this I had to have it. I was so blown away by how these simple ingredients created the smell of that beach in Hawaii. If you want a perfume that really smells like a clean healthy beach drenched in sunshine this is the perfume for you.

I am truly, madly, deeply obsessed with this scent. It is everything I have been hoping for in a marine, oceanic scent. It's got this your skin-but-better just as you get out of the ocean vibe. There is a seaweed, salty almost bodily smell to it ( the salty, fishy seaweed pops out occasionally, but in a really interesting way, not gross!), but on my skin, it just adds to the salty-musk that lands on the skin which is ripened and sweetened by the peach and musky seaweed notes. The biggest, most painful downside is that it has about a half hour of longevity, and even if I OVERSPRAY, like Jeremy Fragrance level blast the scent on me (iykyk), the longevity still isn't there, not even on clothes. The cheat here though is that the extrait perfume oil last SO much longer. I put it on my inner elbows and on my neck and it lasts all day long. I can smell it in my hair and when I turn my head. The salt note is maybe the most ephemeral so that fades, but the marine peachy musk lasts so long with the perfume oil. Big thank you to the reviewer below that pointed that out! To the reviewers below, Abel offers an excellent sample service. Also, there are sample kits for Abel's fragrances at many different online retailers. You should have sampled before you invested in full bottles. Many types of scent molecules can't be smelled by many different people not just musk's. Sample before buying then you won't get burned. You can't expect a refund for a beauty product, you use it you therefore now own it. Try selling your bottle to someone on this site. You probably won't get full price for it, but you could recoup some of your money. I would be willing to buy it, if the price is right. I love this perfume and I can smell the musk.

Their skin is warm from the sun, carrying the faint sweetness of a ripe peach they ate earlier. Cyan Nori captures that exact moment: salty skin, clean ocean air, and a whisper of fruity warmth. It’s an intimate aquatic skin scent rather than a marine blast—soft, sunlit, and quietly addictive. I couldn’t get enough of it throughout the summer months.

I have the parfum extrait (7ml) version of this fragrance and love it! Zesty tangerine opening (which can sometimes lean almost fishy—not in a bad way) that quickly settles into a salty but clean skin smell. Like you jumped through the shower after a sea swim and didn't quite wash the ocean off. The bottle is tiny (great for travel) and you don't go through it fast. Value-wise, I'd definitely go for the extrait over the EDP.

Cyan Nori by Abel is an uncomplicated fragrance with pure results. The top notes start off with the citrus fruits in a bright, sunny, and warm beach. It is very brief, and reminds me of a facet of John Varvatos Artisan Pure but less herbal and more pristine and focused (focused not as in stronger, but as in creating a higher resolution). A well-toned juicy nectar of peach leads the dissipating fruity notes into the next phase. Then, I get the imagery of beautiful natural sand exuding dampness in the sunshine and also smooth black rocks sprayed by the salty sea in the steaming sunlight. The seaweed note carried in the breeze gives some confliction, as it gets combined with some of the chemicals in this composition(perhaps the ambroxan?) but overall it gives the tinge of bloody smooth metallic iron that you might imagine in unblemished seaweed that is edible straight out of the shore. The musk in this composition will do much better in hotter days or temperature controlled environments. I did a few sprays on my wrist, thinking that the whole thing would disappear soon. But when the musk finally did latch on, it persisted for around a week. I am very surprised at this. I am not a fan of white musks but the natural quality made it pleasantly bearable. Because of the soft white musk, I would think it becomes more feminine. As I am testing in late fall, the fragrance shrinks down in sillage by a lot. I also find the alcohol used in this fragrance to feel more ‘dilute’ and less assaulting when you get a whiff of it. Cyan Nori elicits a briny and damp unpleasantness, but also the bright daze that just brings you into a clean, fruity experience at a beach.

At its core a mediterranean scent, with a salty and green feel accompanied by citrus. Right at the start there's a note that bugs me a little, like driftwood that's been sitting in the sea too long and gotten heavy, with the seaweed on it turning sour but this note disappears within seconds and right behind it I can pick up fresh citrus (almost orangey) and salt. Normally I love the marine vibe but whatever natural ingredient they used here, the first hit is a bit challenging because I think they actually make this from nori extract. But in terms of olfactory experience, those first seconds are really valuable. At its core the mediterranean vein is still intact while the scent moves towards a soft skin musk. I really loved the drydown. Since it's 100% natural and there are IFRA regulations too, I looked into how they made this musk. It opens up in the biotechnology section on their own page: they use plant sugars as a starting material, and living organisms like bacteria, fungi and yeasts ferment these into scent molecules, similar to winemaking. Once the glorious vesicles of tangerine burst and settle (sorry, but any juicy, fresh peach is almost 100% eclipsed by the citrus and nobody will walk up to you and say "Yum! Peach!), it settles down and the musks come out to play, giving it that "your skin-but-better" scent. I smelled nori only straight out of the bottle, but there was only maybe 1% of an oceanic vibe happening on my actual skin. Upon dry-down, the fruit was totally gone and it smelled almost exactly like Dedcool's Milk or Milk Extra (also a vegan musk accord-based scent made to smell like you, but better). Milk does not have a fruity opening though, so you miss that, but for the main show, its the same muskiness that brings out your own pheremones -- and is less expensive. It's nice mixed with their vetivert-forward Laundry Day to help it last longer on the skin.

A very nice potent, tangy, fruity, juicy aquatic and slightly powdery musk. I don’t typically like things too sweet or powdery/ floral but this strikes a nice balance. Edit: I realized that one of the reasons I like this so much is that it reminds me quite a bit of Pear Inc by Juliet has a gun, which I can’t wear because my husband is ultra allergic to ambroxan which it has quite a bit of. Makes his throat close up! No bueno. This has similar shower clean fruity vibes , but less shampooish then pear inc. The fact that this is a natural, ton toxic “dumb reach” for everyday wear in summer is making me consider a full bottle. Thanks Abel! Fragrantica needs to specify that the “musk” note is actually the ingredients ambrette seed which is not at all the same as a traditional synthetic or animal derived musk.

I read the recent review of Cyan Nori by Abel here on Fragrantica and based on that I decided to purchase a sample. I do like the scent but I can't put my finger on what's presenting as the dominate smell. I can't smell any of the notes that are listed here on the website. I'm not sure what seaweed smells like though. I've never picked it up and took a smell of it. It is a unisex fragrance and I think men and women alike would like it. Since it is an all natural fragrance it has a short duration. At least that is what happens on my skin. Overall I'd give it a thumbs up!

Definitely like this perfume. I got a 8ml bottle to test out the perfume for a month. The only sad thing is that this perfume disappears within minutes! The smell itself is beautiful. Salty, musky an citrus really combine well. It definitely smells like a beachy summer day. Only wished though that the smell actually stayed.

Nice, light and simple summer fragrance, kind of ok, but nothing too special. I can smell a gentle salty note but not like a seaweed. Reminds me of Aqua Memorabilis from Jovoy Paris I’ve seen lots of comments about the weak performance but on my skin it holds up pretty well

This is fresh and marine by itself, but I am trying out layering it with L'Artisan Perfumeur's Air de Bretagne. Quite successful so far, no Megamare-style stench anyway.

Loved the crispy nori and velvety peach skin when smelling «in the air». But on me it smells like sushi or japanese bottled green tea so I’m using it for my pillow now.

I was so excited for briny seaweed that I love so much in J-scent’s roasted green tea, but all I can smell on my skin is musk, zero citrus or peach, too

i was really excited to try this for the seaweed and tangerine notes but i think i just don’t like musk

Lovely scent but i can barely smell it.

Only not giving the worst review as it isn't a bad smell but this is just a weak version of Laundry Day also by this brand. Dries down fresher by the way which I wish was the smell in Laundry Day but surprisingly it's not

To me, this smells like literal nothing, both on paper and on my skin. I have a few fishy/seaweedy/oceanic perfumes i can actually smell. This isn't one of them.

This was a blind buy for me, and I could not be more disappointed. Cyan Nori opens with what I guess is seaweed, but it smells like ham to 2 friends, my partner and me. A slight citrus and bergamot scent appears, but after 5 minutes, it's gone. I contacted Abel to complain cause I will never wear a scentless perfume, let alone one that opens with stale ham. Abel informed me that "Many people are "Hyposmia" (colour blind) to musks (generally some musks, not all - there are many different musk scent molecules). It's a similar recessive gene that makes coriander taste like soap to some, so that could be the case in this situation. The scientific reason musks are often not smelt is that they are at the upper edge of the size of molecules that humans can smell - a much bigger molecule and it can't be smelt by humans." I would suggest that Abel put this information in the description of Cyan Nori.
