Authentic Self Man

My true self, or rather, my favorite perfume from this A&F line, isn't necessarily the best in the collection—I find Authentic EDT slightly superior—but Self won me over because it's exactly the kind of fragrance I love: an easy, charming, and uncomplicated scent. Self is the younger sibling of the collection, and it has a youthful and modern aroma. It opens with a cypress top note, which has a damp quality, while ginger adds a low-intensity, electric note. This opening fades quickly, and the heart and base notes arrive almost simultaneously, where geranium blended with violets creates a masculine soap scent that you might mistake for ambroxan, as it's also sweet. The perfume concludes with a light cedar, where you can sense a velvety, dark, and not bright Madagascar vanilla. It's true that Self doesn't reinvent the wheel, and it's very much in line with the current trend for fresh perfumes. I see nuances in it that might remind you of Dior Sauvage EDT because of the ambroxan, or Hugo Boss Bottled Night because of its use of a violent, soapy note. It's a textbook blue perfume. If you disregard the notes, you can imagine a summer house with a pool in the yard, and in that same yard, flowering bushes, where the sun shines intensely, the wind swirls and carries towards you that aquatic scent of cool, evaporating water, accompanied by semi-sweet and relaxing flowers and wood. It's a scent that feels like aromatherapy for your nose and mind—not invasive, not strident, just a pleasant and serene fragrance. It lasts for 6 hours, with moderate projection for the first hour, then fading to a whisper. It's an office scent, perfect for warm mornings outings—casual, friendly, and happy. It's a fragrance I can only describe as suitable for days when you don't want to bother anyone and simply want to project an image of transparency. For me, it's a 2/4 on my personal scale. It has a truly understated performance, and I feel the notes tend to emerge somewhat haphazardly. The experience of smelling each part of the perfume tells me the scent fades very quickly; nuances are barely perceptible. It's also true that it lacks originality. Although not a copy, you could imagine a more youthful version of Sauvage—that is, without the spicy and somewhat serious elements. For me, it's a versatile fragrance that wouldn't be out of place in any collection.

I’ll admit it: I avoided this fragrance like it carried the hantavirus. And why? That bottle! It looks like something Papa Smurf would use to brew up a cure to Smurfing‐sickness. I let that ridiculous blue potion‐vial keep me away for far too long. But once I finally came to my senses, I realized something: this really is a potion; one that mellows me right the smurf out! Authentic Self is deceptively good. If I had to sum it up, I’d call it liquid benzo: the chillest of pills delivered through a generously puffy atomizer. It’s the scent equivalent of The Fonz and Sam Malone dropping by for pizza night just to shoot the breeze and knock back a couple beers. Effortless. Relaxed. Confident in a way that suggests it’s seen some things. This fragrance wears like broken‐in boots, a flannel shirt, and blue jeans, but it still knows how to throw a perfect spiral. It’s masculine without posturing, warm without the heaviness, and soft without going powder‐puff. A calm, grounded aromatic haze. Who is this for? This is for the person with a great vinyl collection who doesn’t talk about it at parties. For the traveler who gets upgraded to business class and ends up next to Tom Hanks... and then spends the whole flight discussing street food and what their kids are studying in college. For someone who’s comfortable enough in their own skin to let life happen around them; and confident enough to course correct when the waves get choppy. Give yourself 8–10 sprays, grab a slice and a couple beers, and enjoy the moment you’re in. Life should at least smell nice, because sometimes you make some mothersmurfin’ bad decisions.

June 27 2025: Fell in love with it upon the first moment have had it for a while, got it May 14. Other perfumes on the shelves that day didn't stand out to me, despite how enjoyable they may have been. Fahrenheit, phantom, boss... (all fine and good, but I didn't want those.) this one spoke to me instantly, its pleasant "fresh airplane interior" scent resonated with me. Nowadays I would even say there's a bit of sterility in there, like that of the dentist's office. Synthetic in a way. A friend described its smell with "fresh out of the shower." July 11: I find it important for you to know that this was the second perfume I bought myself, and the first in that particular price range. Smells different a while after applying, not sure which note that is.

!!!!!!! I have a semi Huge frag collection and often blind buy things just because I don’t have it, which is the case with authentic self. Bought it, tested it once or twice and forgot about it. It’s not even close to half as bad as some of these reviews make it seem.. sure it’s synthetic .. but most frags are,,.. it’s just the facts.. but I’m telling you to try putting this on and wait about an hour, then take a shower,, and the after shower scent you’re left with from this frag is actually quite pleasant . A shower after applying softens the sharp edges and makes this one a much much better skin scent. Almost addictive actually. Try it..

This is a creamier, slightly woodier version of YSL L’Homme. It’s less sparkly in the opening and projects less but it’s longer lasting. It should be a great pick-up once it hits discounters.
