Oeillet Bengale

Rodrigo Flores-Roux is my hero. In 2002 he created the best of all times carnation-woody-spicy combo which was named Black Cashmere/Donna Karan and I loved and wore it ever since. In 2011 Rodrigo's Velvet Love by Dolce&Gabbana kept telling us the same story about black starry Eastern nights and carnation fields. In 2013 came out mind-blowing Sahara Noir, but I embraced it as a very good old friend of mine - younger sister of Black Cashmere, same smooth recognisable base of wild bedouin's tents with its sweet animalic scent of warm black long-haired goat-skin, and at last 2014 - Oeillet Bengale! For all people, who like myself, were long-devoted fans of Black Cashmere, these other tree fragrances are must-haves. I was always genuinely stupefied, when so many people smell in them "incense" or a "church". It is first and foremost smell of freedom, night gatherings near the fire and those super-soft and comfy sheepskins, that warm you inside and out and giving you the sensation of the nature, relaxation, openness, sensuality. You can speak your heart while wearing any of the named perfumes. Carnation is just a beautiful background of wildness that lets this warm spicy-woody base to shine. I just pray that Rodrigo will not stop there and will create few more masterpieces like these Fantastic FOUR.

I am of an age where the original Opium was my very favourite. The same age when if you bought carnations, they smelt of carnations!! These days this is rare to find. For my wedding day I had discovered Floris Malmasion (now discontinued) and loved it. But since then (and it's a long time!) I have struggled to find anything that comes close - despite trying many. But in January I was visiting a small niche fragrance boutique in Bristol and mentioned that I was always on the look out for a realistic carnation. The lovely lady there said she knew of one and sprayed Oeillet Bengale on me. Immediately I was transported back through the years to my old favourites. I couldn't buy it on that day but this week it is mine. I see that carnation does not feature in the list of notes and I read somewhere that this could be because people think of it as an old fashioned thing. That does not matter to me, I feel as though I have re-connected with something and I am very happy. So, for anyone like me who loves carnation I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

This is a beautiful perfume, definitely more classic than I expected, but lacking that vintage-style, heady bitterness so it doesn't fall into true "old-fashioned" territory despite the fact that it centers around spicy carnation. Many classic orientals are hard for me to wear because they so often take on that quality. This one is very different and I would say much more universally appealing. The only disappointment for me is that the projection is weaker than I would like. Interestingly, not only Oeillet Bengale, but others from house that I have sampled also struck me as weaker than ideal. This one is sitting as a barely detectable skin scent/luxury soap trail 30 minutes after application. On the other wrist I sprayed Penhaligon's Bewitching Yasmine - the two happened to be sitting next to one another.. There is a major difference in projection and richness. I like Oeillet Bengale because it's unique and very pretty, but wish it had greater projection and longevity.

It starts with a burst of spicy rose. I love it and I wish it stayed with me a bit longer. Then it transfers to a subtle spicy soapiness. I get a blend of spices mixed with some cut flowers. Still clean and put together. I definitely get the balsamic note close to my skin. It revokes memories of stays in expensive hotels, visiting palastes. It’s beautiful. It’s sophisticated. It‘s a slow scent. In a way that I don’t think I would wear it to my fast-paced corporate office. It’s a UN, OECD, WHO scent. Family Trust office. Important, secretive. All in all, I love it and I wanna get the full flacon though I would probably only use it on special occasions or whilst in London sipping on my tea and enjoying 5pm snacks.

What a beautiful fragrance! Spicy, exotic, incense rose. This is soft, super aromatic , delicious, a little woody. Definitely leaning towards feminine for me. This is also light and airy, very versatile fragrance. Love it!

The smell of Peru balsam is reminiscent of my childhood and I've been looking for a fragrance that has this note very prominent for a while now. I love it despite how slightly old-people-medicinal it smells

Best blind buy ever!!! Best of the 3 from this house & I'm not even a fan of rose. Aedes is a new contender in my heart right up there with Malle & Amouage.

As so often with Aedes de Venustas: a lovely, classy, very wearable .... slight disappointment. Complex and clever spiced carnation, but far too discreet (in every way) for its own good on me. It completely understands the brief - modern, warm, un-cliched floral, all boxes ticked! - but it's nowhere near the growling 80s spice-beasts like Opium or Parfum Sacre mentioned below. Yes, there's a zingy aura of bergamot at the start for all of around 3 minutes (I timed it) which rapidly diffuses to quirky, kindly, mellow spice with a sense of humour which doesn't go too far. Lovely prickles of pepper and cloves join the conversation, but at low volume; turmeric and saffron kept even more murmuring - no bad thing as their occasional sourness or acridness can't spoil the ambience. The central floral accord is so pleasant-yet-vague I honestly couldn't tell you if it's carnation, rose or (my bet) a blend of both; facets or either or both pop up now and then but it never steams up a palpable cloud. All very civilised, yet a bit too buttoned-up and hesitant to let loose and be all it can be. Reminded me most strongly of Lutens Vitriol d'Oeillet, which oddly, despite being much more 'retro' and femme, seems far more adventurous and wilder compared to this. Sadly the party just never really gets going and the plot doesn't thicken any further; it trails far, so sillage might be called 'large' but you turn your head and it's gone. Performance is heartbreakingly anemic, with the whole affair faded to a whisper within a couple of hours. Even lacquering it on, or spraying on fabric, can't heat up the atmosphere any further or eke out the longevity. A very nice party which sadly fails to launch. The entry price is steep enough for that to be a pretty big letdown; I'd suggest exploring Labo Rose 31 or even Moschino Toy Boy before plonking money down for this. Meh...

This is a soft yet beautifully spicy fragrance. The floral notes are the most pronounced right after spraying. After that, it slowly morphs into a lovely symphony of spices with cloves being the strongest to my nose once dried down. Even though the sillage is intimate after a few hours, the scent lingers for a whole day on my clothes and I can still get wafts even during outdoor activities. I think that this perfume is perfect for those who like spices, but do not want an overpowering scent.

I was promised that this invokes the smell of a funeral home. And on paper, for a certain amount of time, it did. Alas, not on my skin. As usual, my skin encourages the soft, the sweet and the musc in everything. Despite the balsam and the spices - extremely feminine. P.s. It doesn't resemble Opium in any way for me. Too soft and, comparatively speaking, subtle in character.

This is a great intimate on the skin perfume. For the first 20 minutes it had a huge spicy blast- then it slowly calmed so that I spent the next two hours, according to my partner, with my head in my shirt, smelling the huge strawberry powder blast that I could still hint this morning!

Opens with a burst of spices, and develops with a layer of incense wafting below and above the spices. Floral notes soften the spices, but the cinnamon and clove mingle and are the focal point. Lovely, warm, exotic without veering into the realm of the bizarre.

Intense, purple flowers and a little bit soft leathers and maybe softly touch by iris shortly. If i were a woman may I buy this stuff. Actually I can say this: Like chloe perfumes. Scent: 8/10 Sillage: 8,5/10 Long: 9/10

A light, airy and sunny carnation. Fluttering between spicy citrus fruits first, then fruity sweet medicine and finally dry, fresh clean flower scent, tolu amber, soft on the skin. More feminine. Serene.

I have a decant of this. After reading through the other reviews, someone needs to clarify why so many people are smelling carnation. Oeillet is the French word for carnation. Bengale is the French word for the Bay of Bengal in South China. To me anyway, two factors are at work here. They wanted to sell their intriguing carnation scent to people under 40, but know that 90% of them associate carnation with little old ladies. So they deliberately left that huge note out of any marketing text about the perfume. I think they might have also added some violets, but they're definitely old women territory, so they made the bottle violet and kept quiet about the contents. And secondly, obviously Aedes de Venustas must know most people don't routinely look up the meaning of unfamiliar words. So they gave their exotic, beautiful carnation-violet-incense fragrance a French name that sound sophisticated and people would associate maybe with bengal tigers, jungles, cat women, or who knows what. But not carnation. So, be not afraid all of you under 40, wearing carnation perfumes will not turn your hair white and give you arthritis overnight. Despite the deception, Aedes de Venustas has produced a wonderfully exotic carnation scent worthy of your attention. Lots of pepper and balsam along with the carnation. Yes, there is some rose, but no strawberry at all that I noticed. It's not a sweet fragrance, but not dark and brooding either. I'd have a whole bottle if it wasn't so expensive. Several hours after sending out my post above, I waded through the text on this site, apparently written by Aedes. So I see they're reluctantly admitting down at the end of the text, when most people have fallen asleep, that there really is carnation in it. And being a rose grower I looked up the Oeillet Bengale rose in HelpMeFindRoses.com, which has everything. Indeed it has Oeillet Bengale, and says it's marketed under the name Cramoisi Supérieur. I actully grow this rose; it's a sort of spindly 6-foot climber and the roses themselves are about 2 inches around or less and hang their little heads down on thin stems. Not fragrant really. They look better in photos. Aedes' text says they didn't name the perfume for the scent of this rose. It's all really confusing. I'll go with my earlier assessment; they tried almost anything to hide the huge carnation note, to the point of naming it after a rose no one has heard of, just because the name sounds exotic. Fortunately, the perfume is wonderful.

Reluctantly, just adjusted my rating of this from like to ok. I think they've done something to this. I'm at the start of my second "authorized spray refill" of this stuff and it seems a whole lot lighter than the first one was. I bought the first one maybe 3 or 4 years ago. With this new one, I still get the big opening burst of cloves and pepper. all big and blowsy and promising. But within a half an hour (maybe less, I didn't time it) it settles in and an hour or so later I wonder if I forgot to put any perfume on at all and begin snorting my wrists. It's already a skin scent, and not a really interesting one either. The realm of the insufficiently bengale (wild or whatever it translates to in French). Thank God I never dropped $245+ on a whole bottle of this. I'll reach for Floris Malmaison or another real carnation-ey fragrance now. Added July 5, 2022: Not my imagination either, they have changed/weakened the original scent. I just found my original tiny spray, which had less than I squirt left in it, but even that little squirt has lasted 4 hours so far. Whereas this new "authorized spray refill" bombed out at around 30 minutes. What are they thinking?

I read that they wanted to make Oeillet Bengale a modern interpretation inspired by the classic carnation note. Well, instead of a classic carnation floral, this smells more like a classic spice soap in my opinion. I get pepper, cloves, cinnamon and rose from this. It‘s super dry and a bit smokey. There is warmth from the spices in it, but also a cold kind of cleanliness - just like you scrubbed your skin with a strongly scented spice soap, and somehow like the cold, incense-scented stone walls of a curch. This is not exactly unpleasant, but not my style at all. For spicy carnation I prefer Prada Infusion d‘Oeillet. If you dislike sweet scents, but love spices, you should try Oeillet Bengale though - and don‘t be afraid of the listed vanilla and strawberry or the benzoin, I don‘t detect any of these at all. In my opinion they would have made this scent more balanced, but I‘m sure someone else will appreciate this just as it is.

If you like the smell of clove ، Oeillet Bengale is one of the best perfumes . because From beginning to end, you will feel the scent of cloves اسم عطر به فرانسوی میشه میخک بنگال پس با یه عطر که بوی غالبش میخکه طرف هستید که منو یاد دهه 70 میندازه که بزرگ ترا این تیپ عطرهارو استفاده میکردند وقتی عطر رو پوستتون اسپری کنید بوی تند و بسیار طبیعی فلفل سیاه رو متجه میشید که حدود چند ثانیه طول خواهد کشید تا این وضعیت فروکش کنه . سپس روایج بسیار ضعیف گلی به همراه بوی مشخص میخک رو حس خواهید کرد . حداکثر بعد از 10 دقیقه عطر رو به گرمی و شیرینی متعادلی میره واقعیتش نمیشه به صورت مطمئن گفت که چه روایحی باعث این تند و اسپایسی و شیرینی و گرمی عطر میشند حالت تندی این لحظات منو یاد زیره میندازه ولی چیزی که مشخصه اینکه شما هرگز نمیتونید بگید که عطر بیش از اندازه شیرینه و یا ترشه ! چون هنرمندانه بالانس شده حالت اسپایسی منو یاد دارچین پودر شده میندازه چون حالتی پودری داره عطر و این حس رو به من منتقل میکنه اگه بخوام روراست باشم عناصر تشکیل دهنده عطر توان قدرتنمایی در مقابل میخک رو ندارند و شما از اول تا آخر بوی میخک که غالبه رو حس خواهید کرد ولی تاثیرات مثبت و بجایی رو بجای میگذارند به شخصه با این که این عطر بسیار خلاقانه میکس شده ولی بازم نمیتونم حتی دوستش داشته باشم چه برسه به اینکه عاشق رایحش باشم . چون بوی میخک حالا به هر نحوی که باشه منو یاد دندانپزشکی میندازه . چون از میخک برای بی حس کردن دندان استفاده میشه. خیلی راحت هم میتونید از عطاری ها تهیش کنید تا با بوش آشنا بشید به هر حال اگر از میخک خوشتون میاد این عطر یکی از بهترین عطرهایی هست ک ه میتونید در فروشگاه ها پیدا کنید هم از لحاظ کیفیت و هم از لحاظ خاص و ترکیب رایحه میمونه قیمتش که برای اهل دل مسئله ای نیست عطر پخش بوی قابل توجهی داره در 1 ساعت اول ولی بعد از اون افت میکنه ماندگاری عطر هم خوبه ولی بعد از چندین ساعت همین بهتر که ماندگاری نداشته باشه چون بسیار ضعیف جس میشه

The opening reminded me a lot of Rose 31 by Le labo, I suppose it's the spicy/peppery rose combination. Then comes quite a synthetic smelling fruity veil that actually turned my stomach a bit. Hubba Bubba chewing gum in pink came to my mind and it stays in that spicy fruity floral middle note for a while... I expected more for the price. The staying power seems excellent though (usually is the case with scents that you don't enjoy!)

Oeillet Bengale by Aedes De Venustas- Regal, Elegant, Exotic, Wealthy, High Class, Jet Set, Limousines, Diamonds, Opulence, elegant late night Jazz clubs, Exquisite, Big City, You get the idea. These are some of the things this fragrance conjures up for my senses. This smells amazing as does much of what this perfume house puts out. It's one of those perfumes that you just can't stop sniffing the affected appendage. It opens with an exquisite bloom of Cloves, Labdanum, Rose, Spices, and Vanilla for a moderate to heavy sillage, depending on how much you spray or dab this magnificient fragrance upon thyself. Let's just say, for the record, I really laid this beauty on, so much so, that one could actually confirm consummation of our union. Yes, we made passionate love. Somehow the Labdanum and Vanilla meld together to create an almost civet note, but without the skank. It's quite a wonderful experience on the nose, it helps to lean the senses toward the imagery of the elegant side of life. I could have sworn that there was civet in it, much to my surprise to see that nary a civet or musk note exists on the pyramid. About an hour later, it mellows down to a soft to moderate sillage, of mostly Labdanum, Vanilla and Cloves with drafts of rose and berries wafting elegantly in and out. It has a wet, oily warmth to it with just a poof of powder to lighten it up a bit. There is a slight fruitiness from berries that makes you want to lick this off your body. After a few hours, this really mellows down to a soft sillage, where it leans more toward Vanilla and Labdanum but also leaning to an herbal grassy note that drifts up very lightly from some unknown source. Where did that come from? Maybe from the dissipating Cloves note, It's not a bad thing, but that's when it's time to make love again with a fresh application. Ladies and Gentlemen, Oeillet Bengale by Aedes de Venustas is a diamond gem of a fragrance Highly recommended by High Roller himself as is much of everything that this perfume house creates. An Exquisitely crafted fragrance, worthy of a Standing Ovation and Resounding Applause.
