Aeon 001

aeon 001 might actually my favourite frag these days. it’s virtually perfect....

Aeon001 is a perfume that I didn't like the first time I tried it. My brain was zooming in so much on the vetiver that I was not seeing the forest for the trees. The more I returned to it, the less focused I was on the vetiver and more on the composition, and came to love it. I often do this with my kryptonite materials, so to speak. It's almost like my brain immediately recognizes the intruder. I'm not a fan of Vetiver, to say the least, but I like it when it's cleverly used in a composition. Here, it is put to great use. Just to clarify things, I don't feel Aeon001 is a vetiver-based perfume. To me, it is a dry, really dry, Woody-Oriental perfume, loaded with resins and musks, hence exuding a dangerously warm aura. If you are looking for a vetiver-centric perfume, you are going to be disappointed. Two things come to mind when I smell Aeon001. Ancient Egypt, and a Thurible. I think of the Egyptian aesthetic as it is a robust, bold composition that shows harmony and restraint in avoiding excessive embellishments. I picture a Thurible due to the way it behaves on the skin. It has this warm, glowing core of musks, resins, and vetiver, resembling the thurible, and it diffuses around it a smoke cloud that carries the smell of white flowers and spices. It is a perfume that feels compact, anchored yet diffusive, and light, at the same time. Like being suspended in the air. Therefore, the bottle design is brilliant. Besides being one of the most fascinating and beautiful flacons I have ever seen, it resembles the way this composition is constructed and behaves. The vetiver used is quite different from the most I tried. It has a powerful aromatic facet and a perfectly tuned smokiness. The opening of Aeon001 is aromatic and spicy. A blast of citrusy, dry, and aromatic vetiver, cleverly complemented by tart citruses and spices, with a generous dose of coriander. What you'll notice right away though, is the warmth creeping underneath. The resins and the musks. To me, it smells like civet, with a strong urinous quality. Even though it's buried in the base, it is so powerful that shortly after application, one would notice it. In the heart, there is a diffusive smoke accord that blurs the imagery of white florals. I see Jasmine listed on the ingredient list but I can't recognize it. It feels like watching a floral garden through a thick smokescreen. The final stage of the perfume is my absolute favorite. Dry and smoky veriver, resins, and loads of civet. On my skin, the civet is strong and overtakes the other elements, to the point where I need to mind my surroundings whenever I wear it around people. It exudes a beautifully warm aura around you, heavy yet light, never overbearing. I believe this project was a successful first attempt from this unknown small brand. I would love to see them create some more in the future, hopefully in collaboration with other creative minds like Antonio Gardoni. As far as his works go, I can't compare Aeon001 to any of his compositions. If anything, it resembles a bit of the modern MAAI in the way it makes use of resins, woods, and smoke, and vintage MAAI in the way it unashamedly uses civet. It walks the lines of his older works like Gardelia, Cologne, and MAAI, as it has that strong vintage flair, zero sweetness or joviality, feeling rather morose and serious. IG:@memory.of.scents

Promising. I want to like it... It evokes long lost memories of childhood in the Middle East. The smell of middle aged men with royal and diplomatic privileges gathered at a formal event. It smells of smoked "mistaka" (mastic plant resin) used in cooking very authentic local dishes. It also smells like ordure. Yes. That wasn't auto correct. Like many Arabic/oud-based/earthy/woody scents, especially those concentrated oils ("duhn") used by many Gulf Arabs, it has a lingering after-smell that is rather disconcerting. I liken the experience to stepping on dog dung and not knowing it and trying to figure out the source of the smell (usually a false source is identified, followed by a sense of shame and mortification once the true source is discovered). A friend describes this scent as "baby poop mixed with powder or florally smells... The diapers! Yeah it's more poop than baby." Many a times I have wanted to interview wearers of fragrances with this lingering note to see whether or not they can actually detect it or not... Perhaps they overlook it for the deep and comforting scents of tobacco and vetiver? Overall not for me. I can appreciate the attempt and the combination nonetheless. It lingers for some time after first spritzing it (and I had walked into the spritz! No direct application)... At least only because I grew so anxious to get rid of the fragrance from my body, time seemed to pass impossibly slow. All in all, it's a good attempt. But until I can figure out which one of the notes or which combination therein that's responsible for the diaper aroma, I will stay clear from this combo... Let alone this perfume.

A lovely vetiver based chypre this is an incredibly balanced masculine composition from Antonio Gardoni. The perfume begins with notes of beautiful natural vetiver, bergamot and mandarin before moving to a floral middle comprising of lavender, lily of the valley, ylang ylang and finally drying down to a mossy powdery base comprised of patchouli, myrrh, benzoin and oakmoss. Like many of the perfumers compositions there are some synthetic elements in the mix well. The perfume is beautifully blended, leans masculine, and has moderate to strong projection and very good longevity. This is a perfume that very few will dislike. It is dense, aromatic and has a beautiful evolution on skin. It is a pity that it is sold out and will probably never be made available to the public again. Enjoy!

Covent Garden, 2016; a lovely and sunny September afternoon when I walked the door of bloomperfumery and while talking about MAAI, the owner presented me with this "weird" vetiver. And weird it actually is. It merged several perfume genres and families, glimmered with complexity. After almost 10 years of use, I can state that Aeon is both an animalic chypre (milder than Maai) and an oriental leathery vetiver. I am enthused every time expectations are defied; no soliflore here, but a vetiver surrounded by vintagy flowers and spices. So, classical opening of juicy bergamot. But here it is smelling like a tart, tangy, barely sweetened, dense lemon curd. And if a scoop of yellow dense lemon curd, let us accompany it by a glass of red burgundy; it feels spicy and fruity: the slightly bitter aroma of cranberries and cassis dominates. The cassis is very ripe has its typical sour-pissy-civety odour which is uncompromised here and it seems to emanate an animalic muskiness (the only such uncompromised use of cassis, it would be found in Imitation woman, Amouage). This top notes pave the way to the vetiver that opens as a bright emerald-green that feels practically mossy. The interesting (because unusaul part) is when the tuberose emerges, redolent of plush, grassy, and fresh oakmoss. Overall the first hour of Aeon is a cross genre approach of lemony-vetiver and a mossy-chypre. But the surprises are not over. Signs of new life awaken and stir deep in the ground below them: resins. Running like thick veins of darkened ores, they waft a quiet smokiness as well as a sticky, tarry leatheriness. Unlike some fragrances that use abrasive wood-smoke synthetics or aggressively phenolic, creosote-like tar to create the impression of “leather,” the aroma here is merely a by-product of sticky, spiced resins. Styrax and balsams (Tolu or Peru) are supplemented by labdanum which starts to emerge at this time as a plush warmth descends upon the notes. I would classify the drydown as a green-black, resinously leathery vetiver licked by a “tuberose” floralcy. Glad to have it in my collection. Follow me on IG @alexolympia6

Like a dusty sweet amber, in a desert storm and the fertile soil is flying all around in that storm, beside rough spices and plenty of harshness. I thought for once that it was quite interesting but turned to be quite suffocating. It is unique i can't deny but it smells sort of like (Sueeka سويكة). It's some sort of drugs that is used in Arabia to store in their mouth for pleasure, something like the chewing tobacco. The only thing that is interesting in this fragrance is that it is numbered and with limited quantity.

The vetiver is very strong, and good, though for a more pure vetiver sultan vetiver is your best bet. There is something a bit dung like in this as a few have pointed out, though more of an old dusty scent than anything too fresh and pungent :D All in all a good scent - it does remind me of walking around camels in the middle east...Hay, old style perfumes, bit of dung...

Scent - resinous smoke, white florals & vetiver. Season/Time of Day - I prefer to use this one in the colder months, day or night. Projection - I did get noticed, I didn't get a compliment. Longevity - I get 24hrs consistently.

Settles on me like most Frapin fragrances; citronella-heavy bug spray, akin to OFF. Total scrubber on me. I was surprised with this, considering the listed notes. Body chemistry is a funny thing...
