Karst

The image this evokes for me is the shoreline, I said this to an Aesop store attendant even before they gave me the whole backstory behind this fragrance (which is about the shore and a storm, something along those lines). I am not getting storm, but I am getting a peaceful walk in the morning along the ocean, waves providing auditory therapy. There is a beautiful briny aquatic sweetness in addition to woodiness. I've been thinking about this one for months and finally bought a FB, grateful I did so I can spray it copiously and yearn for summer days at the beach. Performance wise it is average, but worth it for me given how it brings me to a different reality. FWIW I do not typically care about performance as much (so long as it isn't abysmal) - I don't mind respraying to top off. I find many of the Aesop fragrances are quiet and beautiful -- and I don't mean quiet in a pejorative way. They are introspective as opposed to extroverted, mellow vs loud; to me they tend to err on the side of subtlety while still having depth. I hope to collect a few more soon! I can't wait to use this in the summer time, I feel as though it will be one of my go-to's for the warmer weather.

I smelled this in an Aesop store and it stood out right away. Opens with nice oceanic spiced salty notes (especially the juniper), and the cumin really comes through on my skin (which I enjoy, reminds me of my mother's cooking). It mellows out after drying down, like a cool ocean breeze blowing into a sweet and warm-smelling green forest. When I smelled it in a store it instantly brought me back to my childhood hopping on coastline beachrocks with my dad on a hot summer day. It has a strong sense of nostalgia for me. This opens very fresh and clean. Unisex but definitely a bit more masculine leaning in my taste. Longevity on my skin was about 2-4 hours. Projection is not too strong, although it will sneak up on you and surprise your nose at times which I enjoy! I spent 280$ CAD including tax, which is quite a bit overpriced. Definitely not a blind buy. I don't regret it because this scent scratches an itch I haven't really found with other aquatic/ozonic fragrances. Not gonna be everyone's cup of tea to wear but if you like freshies, this will captivate you! Definitely a Something about this fragrance feels so authentic to me as a person...

My absolute favorite from AESOP. This reminds me so much of riding horses. I'm not around horses as much anymore, but this perfume puts me in that mood. It has an Equestrian girl vibe to it. It's a horse girl, going out on a date. Knows how to get her hands dirty but cleans up pretty damn good. She can walk in heels but prefers her Lucchese boots. This is a clean, spicy (not too spicy) warm yet fresh, SEXY perfume. It's like going on a date with a COWBOY. A fancy dinner, bon fires, slow dancing. Riding around the city, because why not. Kissing, while listening to Look What You've Done To Me by Bob Scaggs. Like the most perfect scene from Urban Cowboy, one of my favorite movies. When Pam and Bud are over looking the city at night. Her randomly making a toast while drinking whiskey... "To COWBOYS, and all that THAT implies." That scene defines Karst. It really does. Rich daddy's girl and cowboy kisses. At least that's how I feel about it. I'm in love. Don't ruin the vibe by wearing it during the day, the magic happens at night. BISOUS

Such a nice summer sleeper! It is warm, but so light and breezy that it still feels refreshing. OPENING: The first few seconds had me worried— my gf and I both got nothing but cinnamon stick. Then wood shavings and potpourri for the first half hour or so, with a sliiiight whiff of salt air. Potent within range but does sit very close to the skin. Reminds me of a diffuser in an expensive beach house with pillows in the window that say “high tides and good vibes”. DRYDOWN: I tried it on a hot day and ran around a bunch, which made me like it a lot more. A little bit of sweat takes Karst to the next level. The sea salt is amplified, the spice is just present enough to give it structure, and it becomes this gorgeous cozy clean-sweaty skin scent. I could still catch faint whiffs up to 6 hours later. I’m gonna get a lot of use out of this as we head into summer. Super curious about the other fragrances in this line too.

i’ve been completely and delightfully confused. sampled this on a whim and had to come back and try it again today to make sure i hadn’t gotten something mixed up. this is a perfect example of a fragrance being much greater than the sum of its parts. reading the notes, i had expected something sharp, cologne-y, masculine with a skankiness from the cumin. but after the first few minutes of bergamot, this softens and the notes melt and blend, both with each other and with my skin. it’s gauzy, hazy, and i would argue that this is actually very pretty. nothing is sharp here, the sandalwood makes it creamy and *almost* sweet. not a beast performer (thank god!) it lasts ~5 hrs for me, i catch whiffs of it and then my nose is glued to my wrist. it’s so enigmatic. love fragrantica but at the end of the day a note/accord breakdown can only give a fractured view of a small part of experiencing a smell.

absolute 10/10 fragrance.... for me 😂 let me explain... first the smell... dear lord the smell its heavenly- there are two competing memories i get with this perfume. 1) orthodox church mass incense - not smokey but the beautiful, holy scent 2) late September/ early October malibu beach overcast hoodie on i guess aesop adds that spicy foundation that expands the gloomy beach scent to a enlightened memory through a scent people go crazy for it friends went and bought it right after smelling it on me its a super light, almost passive scent that approaches only worthy passerby-ers i love it its a daily driver all day every fucking day - aesop killed it on this one 10/10

So incredibly gorgeous. Smelled it for the first time in Bern. When I got to Luzerne I saw there was another Aesop store so I went to spray more on myself. Thirty minutes after I got back to the hotel my mom came back and she talked to the woman at the store who said how nice I was and ended up convincing her to grab a bottle. Extremely clean and not offensive yet unique. The scent is so reminiscent of walking along a lake's shore or a nice hike. I definitely smell a rain element. Obsessed with this and so glad I now have a full bottle. Edit: Still in love with this but it lasts max an hour. I love the scent but it needs some better longevity.

I honestly adore this fragrance. I smelled it a few years ago in store and just couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was gifted it this year and was so happy to finally have it! It’s such a unique scent I really don’t even know how to begin describing it. It smells like you just spent the day in the ocean and now you are walking around with salty, warm skin. Beneath the saltiness is a faint smell of cologne “wearing off” from swimming all day. I don’t know, it’s incredible but sadly does not last very long and the only person who can smell it, is me. However, it’s a very personal and meditative scent.

Just traded in a bottle of Karst. I can see the divided love hate relationship for users here. Karst starts off somewhat piney citrusy with some spiciness and there is a herb like bitter sour from the mid notes. This makes it profiled kinda old school aromatic Barber shoppy. The longetivity is pretty decent, couple hours. The woody Vetiver drydown is still there even after a shower. It isn't as bad as some reviews make it be. Suits the morning and outdoors and the woods, suits the sun and the sea. Not bad at all

This scent is simply incredible. It has so much depth, but not in the sense that it changes much with the dry down, it just kind of hits you all at once. What it hits you with though, is the combined smell of every seaside you've ever strolled, anywhere in the world. It is all of Earth's coastlines rolled into one beautiful fragrance. It immediately evokes a crisp, sunny day, green brush and ocean shrubs against both sandstone and craggy grey rocks.

This is my first review. I love the smell of this. Unfortunately it has very low longevity and is very expensive. I bought my bottle on eBay, and I wouldn't ever buy it full-price. Each time I smell this, I feel happy. It smells to me clean and pure. It evokes the sea, the wind. It instantly boosts my mood. It sets my day off to a good start, or if I'm going out in the evening it gives me the reawakening of getting ready for a night out.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something about Karst I just can not get enough of. It’s like a clean yet slightly spicy smelling scent. It smells distinct and high end, all the notes work together well. This really is the only fragrance from Aesop I like. All the others are too “spicy” for me. 10/10!

So so so gorgeous. Reminiscent of a beach town apothecary during a storm. Complex, fresh, and everything I love. The juniper, bergamot, and vetiver are what stand out the most to me, and it's so so nice. My only qualms are the price and the longevity.

My favourite! Doesn't last or project as much as i would like, but i will keep buying every time i run out. Not a statement scent.. Its for yourself and whoever your cuddling up to

This fragrance deserves to be a lot more popular than it is... I liked it as soon as I smelled it. It’s mainstream and fresh without smelling synthetic.

this perfume smells so good but the last and projection is so bad. if anyone knows a similar perfume that has better lasting power, please lmk xx

i love it its the best smelling fregrance i own but the sillage and longevity is very weak

Karst, it opens like biting into the sunlit rind of a bergamot, skin bursting under your teeth, spritzing golden oil into the air. Juicy, radiant, fizzing with aldehydes like flavoured sparkling water, poured too excitedly. But it settles quickly. Always does. It knows its place—this is Aesop, after all. Then comes the scary brushstroke of juniper, but for once it doesn't bite. Wow! Bot the loud gin-and-tonic kind, but clean and taut, like walking through a coastal pine grove right after a storm when the trunks are still wet and the needles whisper. Rosemary and sage follow in gentle tandem, yet not that acerbic, shrill kind of aromatics Aesop tends to wield like a scalpel (hi, Tacit). It's mellowed, steeped in morning light, and an impression of restrained, deftness. But now—time for The CuminTM️. Yes, it’s there, mmhm. That faint breath of sweat, sun-warmed skin, just a little salt-rubbed. But!! It’s a whisper, not a shout. Just a human trace, a touch of body in an otherwise mineral-laced landscape, folded in like a secret ingredient in a slow-simmered artisanal dish. A hint of humanity in an otherwise statuesque blend, and actually the very first time cumin has been done well (IMO). And that’s what’s so unexpected. Karst doesn’t cut like so many other Aesops do, but it simply... glides. Less astringent, more fluid. You’d expect the typical sharp aromatic glare, that nose-prickling clarity, but instead you're met with serene calm. Cool salt wind. Sage that doesn’t scream. Rosemary without claws. Even the bergamot isn’t biting—it sparkles. And sparkles. And sparkles. I keep sniffing it, surprised. It smells like... ease. Like a mind unclenched. Like someone who knows what they’re doing.

got this as a teeny 2ml free sample from spacenk and it was love at first sniff! i'm super lucky to live in a british seaside town for many reasons but after reading the reviews, i had a feeling i would have another one and that this would be the perfect accompaniment to my walks along the local beach and lake — and it absolutely is! it's so suited for the often grey and windy weather we get here, making the scent so mouthwateringly pretty. it's mostly woody and herby in its base (like the stems of a herb rather than the leaves) but has a citrus lift to keep it fresh and inviting. GUTTED about the longevity of it, though — on me, it lasts around 2 hours until i can just about smell the juniper-bergamot pairing after digging my nose into my skin — otherwise i would've been so open to saving up for a full-sized bottle :( sea-salty, refreshingly spicy (especially on someone who has a perpetual fear of spice in perfumes in case they turn peppery and BO-ish) and makes me feel like i'm much more adventurous in my fragrance choices than i actually am! definitely on the quest for a worthy dupe now 🌿🍋

A broody, overcast ocean breeze. The cypress bluffs of Big Sur meets the black sand of Reynisfjara. Very "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" (by Caspar David Friedrich) coded. I want to open a wellness resort on Dragonstone and pipe this scent into the chambers. It’s aromatic, but not spicy. Marine, but not briny. The juniper and sage haze into a spa-time green, while the bergamot and pink pepper create the illusion of salt air. There’s a mineral vein to Karst that feels very... igneous? (Source: my second-grade rock collection). Pity Karst fades faster than the morning marine layer, a recurring tragedy in the house of Aesop. Mental Snapshot: Black crags of volcanic rock pitched along a steely sea. You’re a sea lion or a sea otter or some breed of selkie flitting through kelp forests and cliffside grottos. You peer up at the silvery mist pooling over the clifftop trees, an inverted ocean to your own. tl;dr: I am now craving raw uni 🦭🦦

The opening of this fragrance is possibly my favorite smell I've ever smelled. It's marine, aquatic, a touch sweet, and with a lovely aromatic woody base. When I apply this I literally can't stop smelling my wrist. It reminds me of Hawaii, or like a really expensive hand soap you might get in a 5-star hotel by the sea. However... It also has very poor longevity. I prefer my frags to be more intimate with less of a heavy vapor trail so I don't mind that aspect of Karst, but the fact that it barely lasts two hours on me makes it hard to consider buying a full bottle. I would be using much more of this than other scents because of how often I would have to reapply if I wanted to wear this all the time (which I do! because it smells amazing!)

Sadly another weak scent But the truth is I enjoyed whatever little time I had it on It was different And the combination of spices and sandalwood was actually impressive The spicy side was good in the beginning but the mix of the sandalwood at the mid to the dry down was interesting Again the house’s philosophy seems of the airy frags such as a lot of Hermes fragrances not all of them specifically the higher end line which costs an arm and a leg This is not as expensive but just as weak the only difference I felt there is serious effort here So far I respect the perfumer which I’ve never heard off but now I have him on my radar

Smells like sea breeze on a sunny cliff, with the sun heating up the salty vapours and carrying them to you through a thicket of juniper trees. Really unique take on a fresh aquatic fragrance that nicely veers into a pleasant yet minimal spicy and woody drydown. Its fantastic at what it sets out to do but unfortunately doesn't last as long as you would like. That said it's really the only "freshie" you'll ever catch me wearing.

To me this is spicy, woody, and salty. There is an oceanic quality to it, reminds me of driftwood and a stormy beach day. I’ve had my bottle for three years, and to me it’s way overpriced considering how short it lasts on the skin. It is, however, extremely unique. I’ve never smelled a fragrance like it, and it is worth buying for your collection for that reason.

I love the way this smells- like a fresh herb garden or apothecary by the sea. If only it lasted longer than 30 minutes before disappearing! I WANT to want this. I'm a sucker for Aesop's branding, and for fresh, natural scents, but the price is unreasonable for what the product is. Once the sample pack is empty, that's it.

A moody, brooding sexy masculine leaning scent that can totally be worn by a woman.... And I mean this in the most loving of ways -- Karst reminds me of an aromatic high end man's underarm deodorant. While others here said it was fleeting, on me it lasted 7 + hours with a very pleasant sillage... I really really like it.

I have tried the last 3 concoctions. This one is my favorite and ended up buying it. I don’t think eremia or Miraceti also are that great and are equally overpriced. To be honest it will be hard for the brand to top Rōzu (best of all 7) or Tacit There is something special in Karst but not for 150€ / 5 ml.

One of my favourite scents. However, the performance is just atrocious for the price. It usually lasts no longer than 30-60 minutes. I tend to spray 5-6 times on my clothes, that's the only way it can last for 3-4 hours. If this would have a better performance, I'd have it as a signature scent.

I find this to be rather sweet than aquatic - I mostly get Juniper which is followed by some woodiness after 15 min. I think it is rather well blended and I find it hard to distinguish single scents in this one. It leans very male on me. I find it very easy and likeable.

Nice, well-blended scent. I get vapor rub mixed with herbs in the opening, but all I get from the dry down is a slightly spicy iso e super. I’m surprised it isn’t in the notes, it smells almost identical to eccentric molecules 02. Fades away completely by hour 3.

so so moody. reminds me of the house on a cliff in a series of unfortunate events. or one singular brutalist home in a still developing beach town. its a windy grey beach day and the waves are rocky and sharp. the scent so quickly feels distant on my skin.

I have a penchant for moody, oceanic scents, so Karst was right up my alley. It almost scratches the Oud Minerale itch for me, but Karst is much softer. It's really quite pretty, and would be a nice option for a more office-friendly seaworthy scent.

Karst currently makes me think very vividly of Rhode Island beach days and Narragansett Bay bike rides. Cloudy New England coast, salty chilliness and seaweed. It's fresh and very evocative to me.

Coastal brutalist architecture on a grey day, I smell this and I get this concrete cliff house by the sea it's cold and fresh and moody. I like it

It's a problematic perfume. Karst is aquatic, but woody. Swamp might come to mind, but it's not that: more like oak or cedar woods after a heavy rainstorm, with sun bleeding through the folliage. In some ways, it reminds me of Montblanc Explorer, but deeper, darker, and more woody. The damp, somewhat citrus bright tones and sawed wood work in harmony. It's a colonge that stands out from the Tom Fords I won which tend to be somewhat more unidimensional. All of this is well and good, but here's the problem: Karst has nearly no siliage and the longevity is utterly disappointing. For the price, you'll burn through a heavy number of MLs just to make it through the day. Yes, I love it, but no, I'll never buy it again.

I really wanted to love this scent, but I put Aesop on such a pedestal (for soaps, etc.) that I think the brand name made me think it smells better than it actually does. Removing that bias, it's definitely masculine-leaning -- almost in an Axe body spray way. Reminiscent of smelling my uncle's aftershave when I was 9 years old in 1998. I can see sterile new-build apartments with a luxury facade spraying this through their hallways. It's the sharpest smell of all of Aesop's frags, very marine whereas their other scents tend to be earthier. The sharpness fades after a couple of hours, and the scent at that point is decent.

When I saw the cumin note, confused memories of Issey Mikaye and Cartier Declaration flashed before my eyes. I followed through and sampled a spray. It actually smells remarkably like a sea wind blowing through a coniferous forest! The cumin is light and adds a light saltiness to the scent. If you live in the PNW and hike frequently, you will know this scent. And yet, this scent is very unremarkable all the same. It does not capitalize on any of the unique facets of the aforementioned experience. They're just assembled dispassionately in a bottle and sold at $100 a pop.

This smells very similar to Baccarat Rouge 540 on me, maybe slightly more masculine - both a very prominent and luscious juniper. Karst lives up to the fresh spa-like allure of the Aesop line. Longevity is very brief on me, as is BR, but I do prefer BR just slightly more, as I find it more refined.

rather unique compared to the other more generic herbal/woody scents of Aesop but for me personally the marine aspect is a little too convincing. made me smell like barnacles n oysters. but would certainly make a powerful first impression.

Great scent but doesnt last more than 1 hour on my skin. way overpriced imo. it is very mainstream tho so no risk wearing this you will please people around you. But for that price, there are so much better perfumes available out there.

After trying a bunch of woody scents, suddenly an aquatic note appears? It’s a pretty plain, unremarkable aquatic scent—not unpleasant. Gradually, a bit of sourness comes in, and it stays that way through to the dry-down.

This scent remind me of the beach!! It smells cozy fresh and clean to me. I don't care much for beaches but this definitely smell like a cozy day on the beach :)

The cumin is too strong in this one

Very seaweed-y, very similar to Sel Marin. Algae-like oceanic, quite realistic. Not my thing. 4/10

at some point I feel like Aesop should just recall and discontinue this entire Othertopias collection to save the brand some dignity. Let’s not even discuss the scents because they all smell really lazy, mediocre, and with the worst ever performance you could imagine. but what really makes me cringe so bad is their pretentious and absurd marketing. this time they went completely overboard with flaunting their obscure lexicon to the point that it sounds factually wrong. “*our eaux de parfum distill a nuanced and nonconformist approach to fragrance creation?*” - Aesop oh come on
