Amber Santal

A fragrance that embodies Middle Eastern elegance without being "excessive" or too opulent for everyday contexts, Ajmal's Amber Santal is a standout. Amber Santal is not the classic sweet and cloying "amber bomb"; it is rather a wooden and spiritual journey. The green spicy opening: The first impact is sparkling and almost balsamic. Pepper and nutmeg give an aromatic boost, but it is the cypress that makes the difference, giving a touch of woody freshness that prevents the perfume from immediately becoming too heavy. The warm heart, here the real protagonist emerges: the sandal. At this stage it is accompanied by incense, which is not "liturgical" or smoky, but rather resinous and meditative. At Drydown the fragrance "settles" on the skin. The sandalwood doubles its presence, becoming creamy and buttery, supported by a dry (not sugary) amber and the solid structure of patchouli and cedar. Sillage stands out without invading the room, perfect for those who want to leave a classy memory. Despite being an "Oriental Woody", the cypress note makes it wearable even in mid-seasons, not just in winter. It is perfectly unisex: on men it appears virile and solid, on women it becomes sophisticated and mysterious. Amber Santal is often compared to great niche classics (like some woodies from Diptyque or Tom Ford), but with that Arabic DNA that guarantees superior performance. It is the ideal fragrance if you love authentic sandalwood and are looking for something that communicates seriousness, calm and discreet luxury. It's a "shirt" or wool coat scent. It is at its best when the air is fresh and the heat of the skin can slowly release the resins.

Firstly, Ignore the pricetag. This is a unique fragrance, nothing popular on the market could resemble this one. An exquisite combination of sandalwood, amber, bit of incense and neutral spiciness. If you always liked sandalwood in other fragrances, but thought it was too light/fresh for actual wood, or you disliked amber just for its sweetness, then you must try Amber Santal. It is a very calm and mature fragrance. It is a deep scent, but it goes through your nose as lightly as an aquatic EDT would. It's complex and rich, yet easy to enjoy and nowhere near annoying. It sounds luxurious and humble at the same time, very present and makes an absoultely definitive statement. It reminds me of Indiana Jones' buried in the desert deep underground treasure rooms with ancient relics, tombs of Egyptian pyramids full of jewels and trophies, Mosques, Camels and sandstone temples. At the moment I heard Amber Santal for the first time, I was heavily impressed, I had never thought that such a deep, calm and refined scent could exist. One of the best fragrances I have ever tried. No premium thousand dollar fragrance is comparable to this one. I definitely would call this a work of art. The sandalwood in this is unique, nothing you would smell somewhere else, the amber is not sweet at all and the subtle mix of light incense and a bit of spices dilutes the sandal+amber's seriousness, making this suitable for both formal and casual wear.

Ajmal Amber Santal. This stuff is absolutely amazing in every aspect. This is real sandalwood and real amber. This isn't your average powdery amber or overly sweet and cloying amber. This is a spicy and woody amber that has a really weird and original black pepper note in it. At first I didn't know how to take it and I didn't know what I was smelling, so it was suspect to me. After reading the notes and realizing what it was... It made a lot more sense to me. Lasts forever. It stops projecting really heavy after 4 hours but will last all through the night and into the morning (I would say about 10 hours). The silage is pretty decent too. This is one of those fragrances for people that know high end quality ingredients. The Middle East has it down whenever it comes to the best raw materials. Especially with resins and woods. It's also really versatile. At first smell you'll think this would do better in cold weather, however, after letting it dry down you'll see it can go good in whatever, whenever. Anyway.... I rate this 8 out of 10. It's not too expensive but smells like it should be.

If there was an option higher than love, I would choose the one higher than it. Words cannot describe how much I absolutely love this fragrance. It's spicy, warm, amber-y. It absolutely has themes of Muslim perfumery. But, it does have some Catholic resonance, so I could probably pull it off as a Catholic lol. Opening: 7.5/10, fresh opening, but can have a slight sour off-note. Manageable, in comparison its so much worth it. Heart: 11/10, this is where it mellows out into this resinous, warm, amber, spicy fragrance I can't get enough of. It's addicting. Drydown: 8/10, dry, less resinous, woodier. Fainter, but still there really. 10/10, would recommend. I haven't tested the performance because I have a sample spray, the atomizer isn't well and such, so I don't know the longevity or projection, but if I were to guess, it's talking-distance, and would last pretty long because the notes aren't very volatile. Also make sure not to overspray, middle eastern fragrances are strong!

I take back my previous review on this, it opens with a very middle eastern smell with the incense and cypress but once it dries down its one of my favorites, this is definitely a compliment getter. It seems to project the most on the dry down weirdly enough, that's when i got the most comments on it. You do need a minimum of 8 sprays though ill be honest, and i recommend re-applying halfway throughout the day. But its so worth it. 9/10

A consistent woody amber, this one sits very well on my skin. Although it doesn't project incredibly strongly, it lasts an eternity; I can smell it after a night of sleep even though I apply it in the morning. I held a smell test with multiple decants of different colognes at my office, and this was easily the most agreeable scent. You can catch this one for under $70 sometimes which is a reasonable price point.

This is an amazing fragrance. Its unique and classy. The oud in this is amazing...Longevity and silage could be better. But, overall, this is for real men. I love it.

I was influenced into buying this by a youtuber who usually liked very soft ambery feminine scents so I expected the amber to add sweetness. When i first bought in winter 2022/23 strength/lasting power was strong. It lasted through a harsh new england winter, blizzards and outdoor activities both on my skin and even my waterproof winter coats. However I found this scent extremely dry and spicy and no depth from the amber or other base notes. Wore it quite often through winter and always on the cusp of gifting it. Masculine scent for sure. I will also say my friends who have sensitive noses were bothered by this sometimes. But I was new to Middle Eastern fragrances and didn’t let it macerate, so i’ll give it one more shot this winter and decide. Even though i never let it sit properly it still gave me enough to sink my teeth into and experiment with, so props to that. Hopefully I’ll remember to update this review. **update: revisited this year and i’m so pleased! There’s more dimension with the spice and amber. More projection too. It feels warmer and well rounded and i feel it would be more gentle to sensitive noses. It still feels masculine, but it will smell way more appealing on a guy now.

I think is a good fragrance, but there's another alternative from the same house called Hayba. Amberl Santal is more focused, more polished and better ingredients maybe, but performance is week. In 30 minutes becomes very close to the skin and it last about 6 hours. Hayba, by the other hand, has the same profile of amber and sandalwood, but with a beautiful rose, saffron and nutmeg. Way more interesting IMO. Performance is better and the price is more affordable. I was hoping something really good from this Ajmal line, but just as Amber Poivree, performance is truly dissapointing.

Received a sampler of this with the purchase of another fragrance. Projection and longevity are great. But it smells like Tom Ford Black Orchid mixed with a hookah bar. Realistically, that smells nice and people will recognize that you smell nice. Personally, that's just not what I want to smell like. Very intense forward, with amber spices underneath. Lovely smell, just not for me.

Picked up a bottle when stopping over in Abu Dhabi. It's an enjoyable sandalwood fragrance. It's not so complex but, that's ok. It's sandalwood done right. Worth a try, and if you love sandalwood, then it's wroth a buy.

This is a great fragrance to layer underneath woodsy floral scents when you want to add an air of cozy mystery. especially great for fall/winter layering. I’m not sure I would ever wear it by itself.

Update: Changing my rating as patience has benefited the scent some. The opening still has this stale energy to it but its finally starting to open up. Getting more of the amber now and it does favor the amber in Hayba, but still a lot more introverted in comparison. The longevity could be good...I got about 6 hours out the box, now its carrying 7 hours on skin at the moment. It's a like but not a love yet. Final update 5/9/2026: Overall, this fragrance just didn't do it for me. May be good for others but I'll highly suggest sampling first. I might be too quick to judge this one, but compared to others like Amber Povire, Haktora Wood, and even Amber Wood...this one falls flat in several categories. The scent has opened up more with the amber but painfully shy still. No matter the number of sprays, the projection and longevity are muted. It does lasts for about 6 hours but it's honestly a skin scent around hour 1...almost no sillage. The scent itself also leaves a lot to be desired. It comes off like it has cumin, and unfortunately it does present as a musty note on my skin. It has vibes of an 80s fougere, but omit the powerhouse part. So, for anyone that has tried this and like it, I have one that I've sprayed about 6 to 7 times in total that I'm willing to part ways with.

I just got this fragrance yesterday and I think it needs to sit for awhile. Doesn't smell like how others have described. What I'm getting are a slew of woods with Cypress tucked behind that. I don't get much amber, if at all in the opening at the moment...so maybe sitting this will help with that. Also, I have Hayba from the same house, these two smell NOTHING alike. The amber in Hayba jumps off the skin, more rosy, and better smelling to be honest. I also have Amber Povire and that fragrance runs laps around this one regarding the scent...AP's amber is also very prominent and it creates this spicy but buttery smooth amber. This fragrance smells flat somehow. So, I'll give this one some time to mature to give my final thoughts but not off to a good start.

The atomizer is not working well, uneven mist, get your QC in order Ajmal. This should not happen. After getting Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey Pour Homme Noir Ambré every other amber perfume has a very hard time to compete with it. It has some similiarites to it, but lacks the composition, the projection, longevity and the quality. Maybe a bad batch or maybe this needs to sit for a few months, will re-evalute then. For now i would give it 6/10.

For the Sandalwood lovers Amber Santal is one of the better blends in Ajmal's W series. The sandalwood doesn't smell too synthetic as most sandalwood perfumes do, the incense accord gives it an interesting facet which together with the sandalwood reminds me of tranquil temples, the sandalwood has a milky nature which can be found in East Indian Sandalwood. The scent has mild sweet powderiness while sharing the W series backbone of a distinct amber accord. The scent has decent performance on the skin. Very versatile, fits well for formal occasions without choaking people around you.

This fragrance is frustrating because you actually get very little amber or sandalwood. I was actually expecting something like Amber Sultan by SL or something but there is no resinous sweetness here. And there's a lot of cypress and pepper that never really go away for a while in this. It's not until the end does the amber show itself, sort of dry, but by then the fragrance has become more of a skin scent and has little to no projection. It's also very much a classic fougère, classic men's barbershop type scent. Of course all this is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's definitely not what the name or description implies. So just be warned that really is what this fragrance is...a classic, fresh peppery fougère with a light cedar amber base. Also the bottle is really attractive!
