Dahn Oudh Al Shams

I use this as a reference point when sampling other oud scents. I've encountered a lot of niche houses that charge higher prices for the particular scent in their line that uses a tiny touch of Hindi oud to add mystery and intrigue. These scents tend to function as the dark, daring, divisive fragrances within their respective lines, and they tend to carry an elevated pricetag as a result. The psychology of those scents is one of "setting yourself apart," from the crowd because first you have to appreciate something that's an aquired taste, and then you have to pay an exclusive price, thus arriving in squarely rarified (read: gatekept) territory. To people unaccustomed to the note, it's easy to say "look how exotic this is, and therefore costly." But this scent profile is only really outrageous and unique from an American/Anglo perspective, and in the interest of not getting high-balled for faux exoticism, it's helpful to remember how affordable a perfume with this scent profile can actually be. For me, Dahn Oudh al Shams is nice to have around for that basic purpose. It's barnyardy for sure, and you could say it's one-note, but that one note is multifaceted in its own right, if that makes sense. I'm surprised there aren't more comments about how fruity the opening of this is. Then, as many have already mentioned, it basically settles into a prototypical funky, smoky oud that balances animalic funk with aromatic, dry woody notes. Having encountered plenty of scents where this basic note exists alongside various other supporting elements, I don't find this offputting, but it definitely may be somewhat eye-opening for those experiencing the note for the first time. If you've smelled Rogue's A'Oud Ancienne, this lands in a similar ballpark. Not worthy of a blind buy if you don't know what you're getting into, but a great example of a perfume that does quality oud at a fair price.

Having tested, recently, a fair number of Ajmal creations around the oud(h) theme, I feel pretty confident to say that they all share the same type of oil. I do not have the knowledge to define this particular oud oil or designate its origin (natural or synthetic), but it is fairly obvious that in its primordial state it is extremely potent and as close as it can get to the real thing. Ajmal, being a true artist, subsequently decides how this oil is morphed in each and every perfume he makes. In Dahn Al Oudh Moattaq, for example, he chooses to use rose, herbs & spices while in Mukhallat Shams his preference lies around floral & musky notes, in order to manipulate the oud's animalic personality. Well, Dahn Oudh Al Shams seems to be all about oud. A sort of "solioud" type of perfume that opens extremely potent attacking the wearer relentlessly with all of oud's badass features. "Fecal", "barnyard", "cow dung", "horse stable", "cat piss", "pigsty", "skanky", you name it ! I cannot even imagine the look on the face of someone unfamiliar with oud actually testing this. It could even be a great idea for those "candid camera" type of pranks. The word "oudh" in Ajmal perfumes is nothing like "aoud" in, say, Montale's fragrances. An entirely different concept. After the initial blast, the oud note starts to soften, retracting its claws much faster than initially expected. As time passes, DOAS starts to gradually turn more woody, earthy, herbal, musky & warm creating a kind of primitive carnal aura around the wearer. It is purely subjective then on, whether this opulence will be perceived as sensual or repulsive. As much as uncompromising & challenging this pungent ingredient may be, it is an olfactory wonder to my senses. 8/10

WOW, I’ve finally graduated in my perfume game lol. This is the real effing deal. After getting hints of oud in Mancera & Lattafah fragrances, I wanted the real deal. My appetite would not chill until I smelled genuine, infected wood!! Finally!! This stuff is funky! Lmao the stank face I had was unavoidable upon first sniff. I tried to remain as objective as possible, but it is absolutely fecal and challenging; straight farm vibes. Even at this stage, so intriguing! Like, who even thought this would make a lovely scent? The peak of perfumery... is smelling like a disease? Lol I digress; this scent is “alive”. After around 45 minutes the barnyard goodness chills out to an extent. On my skin the dry down leans into the leather and continues its beast performance. You don’t even have to move and this aroma finds your nose. It has a powerful projection, & its duration is eternal. My crazy ass wore it to work as a layering weapon, and it worked lol. It’s so strong, you have to tame it by spraying veryy sparingly under layers of clothing. As you’d expect, it’s extremely polarizing (in the long opening). This is not for the gourmand lover, or the blue-scented folks. You have to like rich funk, in any kind of capacity. Blind buy this only if you are mature with an open mind. Superb value for the amount, authenticity, and experience. My Americanized nose just left the country, from the house. This scent makes me feel wise, noble, & patient. Thinking about it...this scent is all about patience, & understanding. I see why it’s spiritual!

A quality oud perfume can be reasonably priced. All of my reviews of Ajmal - when positive, of course - will begin this way. It’s a point that begs repeating ad infinitum with today’s oud craze. Dahn Oudh al Shams fits. Ajmal has been doing this thing for nearly 80 years, which in itself is very noteworthy considering how few Westerners know of them. Originating in India in the early 1950s, they moved to Dubai in the 1970s and have been there since. They are the largest perfume house in the UAE, and they know what they’re doing. Dahn Oudh Al Shams is just an oud. Period. Plain and simple. Nothing else. It opens with crystalline aldehydes and a big, bold, bracing hit of fruity medicinal and oily wood - like rotted tongue depressors at a long-abandoned doctor’s office, or a strange super glue/epoxy type material. You want fecal barnyards? You’ll get it. Hot, fresh manure still soaked with acidic digestive fluids makes the tongue depressor note feel dangerous to your health. As these health and safety warning signs start to depart, a leathery woody aroma breaks free and carries us through to the end. Though not mentioned in the pyramid I’m quite sure I smell some castoreum layered in here to amplify the effect. In keeping with Ajmal’s style for this particular line Dahn Oudh Al Shams wears lightly, smooth, breathable, and effortlessly. Good stuff. Cheap, simple, smooth, and well done. For those wanting a good quality oud that can be worn often without making your wallet worry about it, look here.

There should be a 😳 classification on fragrantica for fragrances like this one. I guess real oud REALLY does make you flinch the first time - i flinched. It is absolutely crazy that our brains actually evolved to adore something that smells like ANIMAL FECES?? Im genuinely intrigued as to why this happens. I own several medicinal and synthetic ouds and i do love them but this is crazy. It is exceptional, of course, im just shocked how something so repulsive by default can be so enticing. THE ULTIMATE layering tool. Might make you want to go back to the comparative simplicity of a Dior, but it shows you the world - a bit like glamorizing a country before you actually visit it and then getting slapped in the face by the reality of the people, the place and the daily life. Usage: one spray for the whole upper torso. Dab it like an attar - trust me. Layer virtually anything on top and watch it explode. Stupendous.

So funky in the opening but strangely satisfying with a complexity that keeps me sniffing in a way only a real oud can do. When someone says fecal, dirty diaper, or barnyard you would seriously question why anyone would want to smell this, but it’s like the pleasant aspects of those things with dusty woods thrown in. That sounds odd and it is definitely something most people will need to learn to appreciate with experience. As others have mentioned it’s a good layering tool because it is basically just oud. I was surprised how quickly it disappeared on skin (dropped off after an hour and then by 4 was almost undetectable), but it does last days on clothes and the smell becomes softer and actually comforting without the funk.

al Shams is my first foray into real Indian oud, but I must say: this stuff is amazing. It opens with an astringent medicinal note that makes me think of freshly-cut cedarwood: pulpy, cooling, aromatic. After an hour or two, I get a very pleasant mix of aged leather, wet tobacco, and dried fruits. The most enjoyable part of the journey for me. It dries down to a slightly dirty, woody finish. I enjoy this fragrance as a reference note for Indian Oud. For real oud at this price, 10/10. EDIT: two weeks later, I cannot overstate my love for this fragrance. I apply it almost every night for personal enjoyment. The perfect intro for oud lovers.

Man this is the real deal! It such a divine fragrance. I own some of the best Oud oils in the game. The Oud in here is Natural to death! It’s a steal for what ajmal is asking for. This is such a good company. Just Indian Oud one note it’s enough. It’s so amazing that I’ll get 2 back up bottles. This is better than the mukhallat Al sham I own! Only down side is the tacky plasticy bottle, but who care when the juice inside could cost way more than what I’ve paid. I’ve found out in Dubai this only cost 70dollars I’ve paid 120 here in Canada. I wish I can buy more from the Middle East with extremely low prices.

This is a bold fragrance. If you want to try a genuine, Hindi Oud fragrance of high quality then this is one you should consider. I’m rather new to perfumes and there are so so many out there of varying quality. This is not a “western” type Oudh fragrance, it is the most lovely, rich and funky barnyard scent I’ve smelled in a perfume. This is something I imagine George Clinton and Parliament Funkadlelic would have worn in 1977 if it had been around, as this kind of funk is for real. I like to layer it with Ombré Leather, they just smell great together.

This is a perfect compliment to your oud oil collection. As everybody knows, pure oud oil is very expensive and Dahn Oud al Shams is an alternative if you want an EDP that really smells like oud. The first hours it can be to strong for some ppl. At the beginning a woody, light medical oud take place. But it fades away after a while and left is just a natural scent of woody/spicy/leathery oud from the Indian spectra. I prefer to spray it on my clothes the night before using them. It will stay for a week on clothes and at least 24h on the skin.

i have used over 15 bottles of this perfume.extremely strong and rich oud scent, coming from a middle eastern person I love this perfume its my signature during winter.i spray this perfume on my clothes and forget about it 2 weeks later and the smell is still projecting more than any fragrance I have.i can go on and on about why I love this perfume but 1 negative is that it will stain anything that isn't black so I recommend spraying it on you neck and wrist. you only really need 2 sprays of it anyway.

Truly captures what authentic and raw dahn al oud smells like (with an added fermented smell) but in a sprayer at a great value for the price. Not at all similar to the mukhallat (garbage). I believe they cultivate and harvest all their oud in house so that's a plus 👍. Dahn al oud qadeem is quite similar, but swaps the fermentation for the aroma of a bonfire woodiness (VERY slightly smoky, more so focused on aromatic wood), not my thing but it is very well refined.

At the risk of redundancy, I have to add: Ajmal's "Wood of the the Sun" is unmatched for the price. There's nothing in this fragrance but funky Assam oud, yet I find it a sort of olfactory retreat for the nose: layers upon layers of resinous wood. Nothing distracting. So relaxing, meditative, and layered. A 30 ml will last a long time if used sparingly. Western audiences will neither appreciate nor understand this scent, so exercise caution. A hidden gem.

Fresh animalic woody Indian Oud Ajmal Dahn Oudh Al Shams is Indian Oud oil made into a spray. For the first 30 minutes, you would get a strong barnyard animalic funk smell, resist to take your nose into it to smell it and allow the smell to carry through the air to your nose. After 30 minutes it becomes dry fresh wood, herbal and musty. Would be good for layering with other perfumes. This is perfect to use for meditation, religious gathering.

I love this fragrance, if you can buy one product from Ajmal, this is the one, if you are into oudh of course, as it is definitely not for every nose. The way to use it as it was explaned to me by Ajmal representative is to spray yourself/clothes the night beforeas the drydown very mild and smooth... but I like to use it before I go, it is a gorgeous fragrance indeed, sorry ya'll oudh haters :)

When I first got it I did not understand and I hated now I love it, I cannot have enough of Dahn Oudh Al Shams Ajmal it is best to layer with other fruity oud's. I sprayed over dry cedar in my room and my bedroom feels amazing! At night my room smell like fresh and decaying mangoes in a forest, delicious and addictive. Oudh is a learning experience not for the one night stand types.

I just wanted to write down a review on this one, but then eye read the Adam's one and I can't add anything further. A pure Hindi Oud mixed with spices. In diluted form the Hindi Oud smells almost like ripe fruits wrapped in a leather. Welcome to another dimension!

strong strong oudh in its unadulterated form. initial spray with perfume (also available as oil) hits you with alcohol spirit but that vanishes in around five minute mark leaving behind oudh in all its mighty glory.

Wow, this oud is something else! It's so pure and intense, like walking into a luxurious Middle Eastern souk. The spicy notes add a warmth that makes it perfect for cooler weather.

One of the GOAT’s for those who love Hindi Oud. I will always have this in my collection, at least until I get my hands on a reasonably priced bottle of Dahn Al Oud Qadeem.

Awful opening!! Synthetic-fake Cambodian Oud with liters of Alcohol. I don't feel real Hindi Oud here. Very bad experience

One of the best that Ajmal offers; a beautiful oud scent.

This is it. I have many fragrances to choose from, in every scent profile, for every occasion. But I want more. I need to push my nostrils to their limit, to the point of breaking. I want my smile to glimmer underneath the semi-translucent curtain of red streaming from my nose, as it solemnly accepts it’s once-fulfilling love for citruses and florals has been lost to an insatiable, ravenous quest for...funk. After days of research, the price to purported quality ratio lead me to this relic. It arrives in an innocent package, no indication of the monstrosity that lies within. I am ready. My long-awaited, exotic, filthy secret, whispered only in solitude, never to be admitted in public. I remove its leash, and let the first spray settle unto my skin, sparing my nose the brutality of close inspection. It creeps near...the funk is nigh! I see the Dark Barn on the horizon, and it beckons me. Yes! Here we g- Wait...where is it going? The teasing cow gives way to a blunt wood that is...generally pleasing? How can this be? I was ready! You were supposed to be the one to defeat me... Fecal(ish) for the first 15-20 minutes, then develops into a straight, well rounded oud that doesn’t lean too far in one direction of the oud spectrum. A lil dour, a lil henna/gasoline, a little “fruity” lightness. Not at all what I was expecting based on reviews (though some below do echo this sentiment). I can totally see this as a layering tool and am curious to experiment with it. On its own I think it could be a calm, naturalistic scent when you find yourself in that mood. Doesn’t quite scratch the itch I was aiming for, but for the price I’m fairly pleased.

Opens unbearably fecal. No joke, the opening is hot, wet, cow dung. People will literally run away from you. The opening is very strong, very loud, and very long lasting. It'll take a good hour or so before the fecal note is completely gone (on skin). On clothes, the fecal note seems to never go away. In the mid, the fecal note is eventually, completely gone. Hallelujah! Then it transitions to a warm, woody, leather, with a hint of roasted coffee. The drydown is a sexy animalic, woody, leather, with a dirty musk. Interestingly, people who run away from you when you put it on, are the same that will come back to give you a hug later, because it genuinely has that magnetic effect on people. Classic Hindi oud. You must like real oud and have a good amount of experience with oud perfumes to enjoy this, as this is not your TF Oud Wood; this is a fragrance that an oud connoisseur would appreciate. Funnily enough, oud lovers might actually find this fragrance rather basic. So who is this fragrance for? People who appreciate and enjoy real skanky animalic ouds. People who are on their fragrance journey and want to explore real oud and not just the synthetic stuff found in mainstream designer fragrances. People who are patient and are willing to put up with skank, just to reveal the beautiful oud scent hiding underneath. Who is this not for? 99% of the western fragrance market. People who tried Dior Sauavge 10 years ago, and never stopped wearing it. People trying oud for the very first time. Your girlfriend's mother on her birthday.

This is a STRONG perfume! It's so strong, that if you spray a little too much & go into a car, you'll need to roll down the windows! It's oud. Strong, woody, uncompromising oud. High quality stuff, but it's too woody & too strong for my taste. The best thing about it is: the price for such high quality, the longevity, & the sillage (projection). I would NOT recommend a blind buy, especially if you are not into oud, and it's not a safe gift. Don't buy it as a gift. The receiver may never wear it!

Smells like Indian oud oil, super barnyard and fecal, not office safe. However for its price and if you are looking for a fecal oud, this is way better value than the Feugia oud perfumes. One spray fills the entire room. In fact I can smell the shop selling this perfume whilst I was walking up from the story below before I even enter the shop.

Love the build up on the review by Ronanthelibrarian below, made me smile. Hey maybe try Arabian Oud 'Blue Oud' which is quite good Indian Oud and then fades into musk - a much much higher quality version of Rasasi Faqat LilRijal basically and no rose in sight

I didn't buy this to wear. I wanted to know what pure oud smelled like and I wanted something to possibly layer with other fragrances. This isn't as offensive as I thought it'd be. I get a little barnyard from it but I mostly get smoke and wood with a bit of leather. This reminds me of a smoky glass of neat scotch. Right now I don't see myself wearing this on its own but I may warm up to the idea in the future.

This is a less heavy version of Bakhoor Khas with a touch of fresh green tobacco. Edit: as mentioned below it works pretty well in layering with Chopard Oud Malaki

I was finally able to get my hands on this jewel of Arab perfumery, Ajmal's iconic Dahn Oudh Al Shams built solely with a large dose of natural 'OUD HINDI ('Indian Oud) aged in high concentration meticulously diluted in alcohol. Simply a bottled Attar with sprayer in 30ml. Perfume for lovers of true oud! This opulent perfume is a classic and a favorite of Muslims around the world to wear when they go to Mosques on Fridays or at Night Prayers during the Blessed Month of Ramadhan. That is why I have chosen him today for Salàt ul Jummu'ah (Friday Prayer). I can already tell you that it has an Excellent Performance🔥💪🏻 Dahn Oudh Al Shams (oil of 'oud-o sun); And like most Indian 'ouds, it opens in hot, sweet fermentation and soon arrives at extremely woody facets, like a blade of raw hardwood, being lacquered by a glossy varnish, reinforcing the woody fermented aroma. A bright 🌞 'oud From there, the animalistic fermented part of the fragrance begins to emerge, which merging with the varnished raw woody accord, gives the realistic feeling of being next to a barn at sunset, with all these smells hovering around and starting to cool down with the late afternoon breeze, raising a thin and delicate dark woody smoky cloud. It dries into an addictive sweet 'oud penny. Great performance! One of the best cost-benefit in a perfume with 'oud natural, in fact a characteristic of Ajmal, this House that for decades has been dedicated to the production of 'oud with its own plantations in India and Southeast Asia. Ajmal has a huge reserve of 'oud oil and is one of the largest, if not the largest, suppliers to established Arab and European brands.

This is one great EDP with an opening of strong, sterile gauze, fresh Copenhagen tobacco, pungent, balsamic, peaty, decaying fruits and sunbaked, oily, musky marketplace leather goods. Longevity(1-3 sprays) is about 3-6 hrs. Projection is arms length maybe more, no one has commented. My bottle dries down fast and seems to stay close for about 3 hrs, then i will re-apply. I may have reviewed this one years ago, it is damn barnyardy with the Indian aloeswood. If you like(or wondered what it was like) shoveling fresh, heady manure in a 120° barn, while wrapped in gauze pads or rolling down all of the windows, while driving through Amish country, then this one is for you. Anyway, I broke my arm when I was a kid, in the summer, playing baseball. A cast was put on and this is what the cast smelled like after it was taken off weeks later. It was very deep, dark, pungent and decaying florals. Not barnyardy though. Like others have said, A great layering scent. This one is not super complex, so layers great. Layer with Kouros original or Sak Pasé, trust me--beast mode on steroids. I had the Shams Special Edition in the leather box and it was alot better in the longevity, very similar, but beastly. I must re-aquire the Sp. Ed. asap. In conclusion, Ajmal is simply the best, and this is not even their top shelf offering. Update: The more i layer this with other scents the drydown is downright lawnmower exaust smell as if you cut grass all day. Must be petroleum based.

The opening of this is like cigarette ash in an ashtray. It then gives way to a more woody leathery scent. I definitely detect Indian Oud and it’s potent. Not sure if it’s real Oud but it certainly captivates the qualities of real Indian Oud. I initially sprayed this on in my vehicle and rolled down the window and that’s when I truly detected the beauty in this. The cool breeze fanned this gorgeous aroma around and it was Heaven. I do get that barnyardish feel from this. Totally animalic, somewhat fecal and a bit skanky. Personally that’s exactly what I expect from a good Oud fragrance and I think any true Oud lover would enjoy this. A major plus is that you smell the Oud throughout the duration and just at the beginning for 10 minutes like many other fragrances. I will say if you are use to the westernized version of an Oud fragrance, this will certainly rattle you a bit. It’s not for everyone. Overall rating 9/10

this is the smell of real oud. i've bought real oud from ensar oud and agar aura and this smell identical to those on offer from these sellers. that said, i'm not all that keen on this smell, it is quite an acquired taste, but when you do 'get it', it makes perfect sense. this sorta smell is beyond your "i love _____ scents" kinda rationale with perfume. oud perfumes ARE soothing. they do calm you and they do have this otherworldly quality to them. it took me a solid month of wearing oud perfumes at home and to work before i got it, and when you reach that stage, oud perfumes are awesome. with that in mind, there's precious little else to this other than oud. it's oud all the way. it smells more like that south east asian ouds (thai and cambodian). there's nothing else to this scent. i dare say it wouldn't appeal to many people. but it is what it is...

This is a CLASSIC. Fermented, real Indian oud in its full glory (with some minor elements added to help the sillage and longevity). Yes it is not high quality oud but I mind you, have you seen the price? It is extremely affordable! Country side. Hot and sweaty sunshine. Cow dung. Hay. Dry forest near by. Lovely animals all around. This is a true scent of a cowboy =) Make your self a gift if you like dark and daring scents. Just blind buy it and use it at first as a layer. Simply apply 2 -4 sprays then layer it with ANY of your fav perfumes. See how it goes and thank me latter =)

I got a good experience by putting it on the night before and layering it with an intense rose, namely Amouage Epic Woman extrait. It's so foul for so long but so good later. As others note, it's quite lasting on fabric. One or two sprays is enough. The atomizer itself is top notch, spraying a very fine mist. I placed it on my belly under layers of clothing. It wafts well in colder weather. Over-apply it just minutes before leaving the house in hot weather on your neck, wrists, or other bare, exposed skin and you and those around you will suffer untold consequences.

Jaysentz said it really well. This is legit oud, and legitimately FUNKY oud...but for some reason you cant help but keep sniffing. It takes a while, but it calms to a campfire spicy smell. To be honest i would only wear this out as a layer with other things, where this REALLY shines. Sometimes at home ill spray it by itself though. I think terms like "fecal" and "pissy" get thrown around much too easily, this isnt poopy but its like an extremely burnt wood smell lol.

I am glad to see many reviews on this one! A few years ago there only a few it seemed. This is straight up Strong, medicinal, animalic oud at the opening, BUT WAIT...there's more; the dry down is perfect oud. No rose to mix with this! If you really love oud you MUST try this! Personally, this is what I expect in my oud. It was a blind buy but I'm glad I did because I know what real oud is and trust me, it not what people call Aoud. If you love oud, get this!

So yeah as mentioned by others, this will be a great fragrance to layer with. I will use it as a base perfume in winters. Probably 2 sprays then layer it with Chopard oud malaki or Mancera Red Tobacco or maybe other oriental perfume. This perfume strikes the perfect balance for me among the shams line up. Nor too strong nor diluted. Totally worth the price.

Great to see many find this challenging beast appealing =) For those who can't get enough of it I strongly recommend limited edition version. It is basically the same animal but slightly darker, more aged and refined. Again not a super quality oud but absolute banger for the price and can act as perfect layering tool.

Very similar to Mukhallat Shams in its aggressive opening and dry ambery feel. But this has a much greener aspect that im not sure where it plays in. But this is closer to what i would imagine a real oud to smell like. It still have that ambrocenide/cypriol/cashmeran character that i just cant get past.

An affordable oud with absolutely nuclear performance. It will be on your skin for at least 24 to 36 hours and on clothing for even longer. It will throw a huge scent cloud so be aware of that. This is Indian oud and so is a barnyard, skanky fragrance, and you should try before you buy if possible.

Ok...I got it ....tried it. I also purchased Syed Junaid Oud Bakhakh. Both hit you with a whallop....use very sparingly. Better to spritz in the air and let the spray fall on you. Ajmal Oud is sweeter....while Syed Junaid is more woody. Prefer the latter although the former has a better reputation.

Powerfull opening. Sharp, pungent, little fecal barnyard. Little frightening. But it settles. The oud needs to open up. Dries down herbal, mossy, woody, dry. Very mellow, with whiffs here & there. Reminds me of an old pirate ship, old wooden treasure chest of sorts. Cool bottle also.

at last found the proper strong Indian Oud the way it should be and the away i prefer it. two puffs and i can smell it really strong, it stays on clothes for two days. i had to tell my friend to buy it for me from Saudi Arabia and it costed me £40. i am loving it.
