Niche December Contestant 9: First impression: The name of this scent speaks for itself. It's a simple airy-blue composition reminiscent of some Versace and Issey Miyake freshies (which I love), aswell as Light Blue by D&G. The musky yet clean base shows that what you're dealing with isn't your regular designer! Main review: The musk gets heavier the longer you wear it. I'm pretty sure it has Ambroxan in it, but I can not prove it. I am a general fan of the scent profile, but I would not wear it in the hottest days of the summer. If you don't get sweaty, it will serve you well. Overall 9/10 EDIT: As of now, I have chosen this scent as a first-priority full bottle contestant, and have purchased it.

THEEEEE layering scent. lavender rain. layer with anything smoky. please trust me here. leans more masculine, but women can pull this off very well. definitely very innocent. versatile and slightly teardrop-like. gorgeous.

This is the perfect fresh fragrance. Imagine niche eau fraiche that is fresher, smother, and lasts on skin over 6 hours. I have no idea why it's rated so low, this is fresh heaven. This is going on my top 10.

Reminds me of Le Perce-Vent, and could equally be one of the MFK freshie musk bombs. Very nice!

Not the glamorous kind - no yachts, no private islands, no cinematic disappearing act. Something smaller than that. The promise of space. Of unclenching your jaw and realising you'd been holding tension there all day. The funny thing is, that's not quite where it takes me. The opening is genuinely beautiful. Bergamot flashing across skin with a clean, almost luminous brightness, lavender close behind - crisp, aromatic, groomed without being stiff. Together, they do that thing where order seems to return to the room. Windows opened after a long winter. Fresh cotton lifting in a breeze. Everything lighter for a moment. Then the water arrives. And I'm somewhere else entirely. Not wilderness. Not a remote mountain or a cinematic field of grass. Somewhere more familiar than that. The aquatic notes take over quickly, and what they bring with them is deeply recognisable - impeccably clean masculine fragrances that seemed to define entire decades. Freshly shaved skin. Crisp collars. Bathroom mirrors fogged after morning showers. The quiet confidence of someone who knows exactly who he is before he leaves the house. There's something unexpectedly tender about that familiarity. I didn't expect to feel it. But I did. The criticism is easy enough to understand, though. For a house built around bold concepts and addictive experiences, this is remarkably restrained. Maybe too restrained. The aquatic-musky structure has been done many times, and if your collection already has a few classic fresh fragrances, you'll recognise the terrain immediately. At niche prices, that familiarity becomes a real question. What exactly are you paying for? Refinement, I think. The water notes never go harsh or synthetic. The musk is soft, almost weightless. The whole thing has been polished until it feels effortless - no rough edges, no unnecessary complications, just a clean stream of freshness gradually settling into skin. The downside is it loses altitude fast. The opening has lift and momentum and a genuine possibility. Within an hour, most of that has folded inward, and what remains is quieter than I wanted it to be. The room shrinks. The air settles. It becomes less a presence and more a memory hovering close to the body. Part of me wishes it held onto that opening longer. Part of me admires that it doesn't try. Because I keep coming back to it despite the reservations. Not because it's groundbreaking. Not because it's original. Because sometimes, after weeks of chasing complexity and darkness and spectacle, I remember how good it feels to simply smell clean. To feel put together. To move through the world without carrying the weight of interpretation. Breathe doesn't ask much. And on certain days, that's exactly what I need. Vibe: Freshly shaved skin, white linen open at the collar, morning light before the city fully wakes. Performance: Bright and invigorating early, settles into a soft musky skin scent within an hour. Around 5–6 hours total. Fit: Spring mornings, office days, moments when simplicity feels less like compromise and more like confidence. Look, I'm a bit of an Akro fangirl, so I broke my no blind buys rule and blind bought this because I couldn't find a sample anywhere. Breathe smells exactly like you think it's going to smell based on the notes. If I blind smelled this, I would think it was a pleasant smelling, non-descript, moderately priced designer. Not cheap, mind you; moderately priced. It smells good! It'll be nice to wear in the summer heat! But does it smell pretty much exactly like dozens of other fragrances? Yes. I can't tell you what those fragrances are because I don't dabble much in designer freshies, but I will not be surprised when, a year from now, that's all that populates the Reminds Me Of section. Those with large collections of masculine designer freshies will almost certainly be reporting soon that this is redundant, unremarkable, and overpriced (even though I think Akro is actually one of the more reasonably priced niche houses), but I don't have any basic freshie colognes in my collection yet, so I'm happy to keep wearing it through the summer at least. But would I have purchased a bottle if I'd tested it first? No. Don't blind buy bottles, kids.

Sampling Akro Breathe, a release from earlier this year, a fresh, airy, watery, musky blend featuring a sort of lavender-led, semi-sharp, watery, mossy blend that’s quite easygoing and nice while not making as much of an impression as most of the more idiosyncratic perfumes in the house inspired by substances like coffee or ink, but it’s helpful in adding some diversity—particularly via a fresh, crowd-pleasing option—to the catalogue while not necessarily being too striking. Overall, I quite like it but it’s not among my very favorites of the line. As with most of the line, Breathe is EDP concentration and has retail pricing of $185/90 for 100/30ml, and is sold in the US via the house website and great boutiques like Perfumology that carry the line. 7 out of 10

Pafory Advent Calendar 2025 - Day 9: Akro Breathe First impression: Finally, a genuinely fresh aquatic scent after days of sweet and complicated fragrances - this feels like a true breath of fresh air. It opens fresh, spicy, and aromatic, with the prominent water notes quickly dominating the composition. It's highly reminiscent of those classic designer 90s/00s masculine freshies. On the surface, has a scent profile similar to ... Aventus. However, has none of the awful headache inducing effect. Closer sniff and it's smooth, more refined, watery sheen to it. The balance is just right - the musk adds a nice soft punch to it at the bottom. And actually a legit freshie. What else - it's much more affordable than what I instinctively compared it to. I won't use it myself, but totally recommend it to those who like this profile.

I guess to some people this reads as a typical bergamot-heavy freshy with a crazy price tag... it kind of is. I still really like it. The citrus and lavender notes are much punchier than what I've experienced from similar fragrances. I will say that ultimately you're better off one of Versace's freshies, because the difference between this and those is pretty minimal, and it's easy to find Versace for significantly cheaper.

Flashback indeed. Someone below mentioned the 90s Cool Water perfume, and I get that point. I wore the feminine version the first time I went to Hawaii, and for some reason Breathe also reminds me of Hawaii; a very clean, slight tropical air scent. I also pick up some aromachemical that smells like powdered soap. I don’t dislike it. If you want clean and easy, this is it.

if you’re willing to wait a couple of hours this scent turns from straight up cleaning product to a fresh, musky cocoon with a faint note of sea salt. i gotta admit that i really do have to push through the first 30/45 minutes cause i feel like i’ve just sprayed febreze all over myself, but i guess with the heatwave and all i ain’t even mad.

wait why didn’t they lean into the fact they’re post-ironically making a 90’s aquatic in the copy somehow? that would have been way cooler than saying it’s inspired by nature, which it doesn’t give at all. unfortunately i dont think im gonna shell out 185 for (a way better version of) versace pour homme/cool water

A little too perfume-y for my skin chemistry. It's not bad... but I don't get musk with this and it's a little more feminine than I prefer. I still use it, though, and it's nice for summer. I only need two sprays and it lasts me all day. Very easy to overuse.

This is a fresh and aquatic breath of fresh air. It smells like something from my past - I can’t put my finger on it but it is stirring something up. I wouldn’t usually have chosen this based on the notes, but my free sample has brought me joy!

This definitely leans masculine. If I were bolder I'd wear it anyway. This really is a nice fresh air aquatic type of scent. Idk how anyone would dislike it. Very inoffensive. I think I'll be purchasing a bottle for my dad for Christmas.

I mean yeah - lavender & water is what you get here. Exactly as advertised. It definitely leans masculine as I thought I was smelling a re brand of Cool Water. A very GOOD re brand of Cool Water though, don’t get me wrong.

This smells like if Versace Pour Homme was made with REALLY nice ingredients. Thankfully I love Versace Pour Homme! This has more depth to it, a little more sweetness, and far less of that “cologne” thing.

I thought the notes were underwhelming on paper, but after smelling it in person, I bought the 30. This is a lovely fresh scent for the hottest, humid summer days.

I like it. Nice summer day scent that is unisex. Easy to wear and versatile. It reminds me of those scents mentioned, but is not same. Same family maybe.

I like aquatic and aromatic fragrances in the 90s style, so this high-quality freshie is very much in my wheelhouse.

I'm quite puzzled how they released a straightforward 90s freshie as their new launch. @ponderbread below is spot on, and i can say I wouldn't be surprised if this was the new summer flanker of Issey Miyake. Sure not bad and easy wear but at this price level, big no. There are like a hundred designer freshies like this one.

Ended up gifting this one to my partner as it is too masculine. It is not a bad scent but feels quite generic. A regular aftershave will likely do if you are after this scent profile, best spend your hard-earned cash on something more unique.

It is aquatic and fresh, but I do think the comments about it smelling about like shaving cream are correct. It’s a nice scent, but probably not worth your money.

This was one of the few decants I’ve purchased that I don’t think I’ll even finish. It’s fairly inoffensive and generic overall (definitely a close relative of Versace Pour Homme in the dry down) but the opening is an overdose of calone that comes off a bit cheap or synthetic compared to VPH or even Light Blue. I’m a general fan of aquatics, so it’s not even that I don’t like calone, it’s just that something in the way it comes off here is a bit too sharp/lysol-esque in my opinion. This is most definitely not worth the retail price. I bought this because I’m a big fan of VPH but it has such short lived staying power, so I wanted something stronger - but this was not it for me. Prefer VPH, Eau Fraiche, Light Blue or most Issey Miyakes over this.

Kind of underwhelmed by this one- it smells like a basic fresh guy's cologne to me. Not bad, but not something I would wear. I definitely do not get an outdoorsy vibe.

A niche clone of Versace Man Eau Fraiche in the best way (same way people speak highly of Boadicea as a clone house). First time sampling from the house and I must say I'm impressed. As someone that can't wear many designers (light blue gives me a headache or example), Man Eau Fraiche has always had a place in my collection since discovering it. I might just have bias from ownership, but there's no way they weren't directly inspired by Man Eau Fraiche. In comparison, Akro achieved the scent profile's elegance and utility to a more refined degree. The original has some sour/tanginess that this doesn't have, but it achieves a clear starfruit note with it so don't take it as a negative. Just difference. Very fresh, aromatic with the aquatics at the center and the zesty citruses at the top. The musk is soft and floats through your nostrils gently. This goes for a reasonable price for a niche fragrance, which makes it a reasonable buy considering its simplicity in my opinion. Redundant to own this and the Versace, and I wouldn't say this is much more noticeably refined than that either to be honest. Very small percentages of detectable quality difference, and there's actually a bit more going on in the Versace, surprisingly. Not sure I would go out of my way to buy a bottle, personally, but I would recommend it for sure.

It reads unisex but does lean ever so slightly masculine—though never in a way that feels harsh or off-putting. If you love clean, aquatic scents with a touch of sophistication, Breathe is definitely worth exploring.

Blue mineral/melon musky fougere freshie A musk-heavy freshie with elements of chalky minerals, linalool/lavender in the top and coumarin in the base giving it a fougere character, dihydromyrcenol some calone in the background even giving off a slight melon-like character and a slight aquatic off-feeling to the composition. While nice and 3D in the opening, it gnaws at you with its sticky dry down, a mixture between the smell of a pool and designer freshies from the early 2000s. Oddly I also don’t get the desired effect of refreshment, because on my skin it’s quite dense and produces a sticky warm effect like lukewarm pool water. I also don’t get citrus or green notes from it as you would expect from the marketing image of a tranquil mountain side. For that imagery better look at Chanel Edimbourg. That being said if you like the whole scent profile, chances are you will fall in love with this one, as the tenacity is monstrous on my skin.

Just sampled. This smells like a higher quality Versace Man Eau Fraiche (also perfumed by Olivier Cresp). It smells a LOT like Man Eau Fraiche. Up close, very close, I also pick up a bit of Guerlain L’Homme Idéal Sport (underrated btw). If you love the smell of the early 2000's, this is for you. Totally unisex BUT could be perceived as masculine due to the association with Man Eau Fraiche.

This was very pleasant. It was my 1st wearing. I get the DG comparison. It lasted all work day. I got a compliment outdoors from an older woman (70ish) walking behind me " you smell great". After work I went to summer ball. (I coach High School football) the kids dug it as well. I got it on Jomashop for $55 100ml. So it wasn't overly expensive. Lasted all day. I'm happy with it.

Opening smells similar to versace man eau fraiche and the drydown smells similar to bvlgari aquamarine. But this one last a bit longer and performa well on high heat than the two mentioned. It definitely sticks to my skin. Definitely an overspray for me. Maximum 8 sprays. Edit: This kinda also gives a bit of bubblegum scent when I sniff my clothes.

Must say the 'concept' and notes stated do not excite me....... but hopefully I can actually try a sample soon. Akro's early frags were, I think, quite unique - especially 'Night' for me - but as already commented, the brand seems to have lost its way with the last few releases.

Ink was disgusting. Dark smells very close to MM “By the Fireside”. This house is so marketable with their names and concepts...but unfortunately I haven’t been impressed with the actual scents. Let’s hope that “breathe” is better than its predecessors.

Simple and very pretty. For me, it’s exactly as refreshing as the notes would suggest. It’s very delicate and has a pretty intimate scent bubble. I’m about 5 hours in and it’s still there faintly on my skin. The aquatic note never got stale for me.

This is pretty much a glorified niche version of Versace man eau fraiche and I’m here for it. I mixed this one with Byredo super cedar for an unreal combo that other people around me really liked. Try it out.

Sorry to be harsh, but just judging by the notes, this sounds very boring!!! I have completely lost interest in Akro’s recent launches and Breathe doesn’t convince that I am wrong.

This smells exactly as Versace Man Fraiche de Toilette after 20 minutes spraying on a skin. The very first note is salty marine, but then it is just Versace.

The concept of this brand was nice and unique, with interesting fragrances, but when running out of ideas one needs to know when to stop and move on.

Yeah agree that the choice of marketing notes for this is poor, couldn’t pick a line up of notes less intriguing if you tried.
