Ink

Ink is my final Akro sample to try (Bake is too new to have been included in my discovery set), and it is another excellent rendering of an "addiction", as is the theme of Akro's scents. Ink is a really creative concept that has been brought to life beautifully by master perfumer Olivier Cresp. Best known as the nose behind myriad designer bestsellers, here at his own brand Akro is where his creativity is allowed to truly shine, not being constrained by the brief from a profit-driven corporation. I have been impressed overall with the scents for Akro, but Ink is inspired by a much less obvious and more challenging addiction than say, coffee or cannabis, and it is successfully realised. Ink is, well, inky from initial spray. Dark and mossy, it has a leather undertone, reminiscent of an exploded pen in a handbag. It smells like an inkwell for an old-fashioned calligraphy pen to my nose, and the leather also brings to mind the tattooist's chair, bringing the theme fully to life. I have been in tattoo studios - accompanying friends while they were getting piercings, and once to get a tiny tattoo when very young. This scent is reminiscent of the studio - ink, leather, plastic, a hint of a chemical undertone - Ink is an excellent olfactory artwork. The ink effect is given by dense, mossy notes - perhaps oakmoss and vetiver - and leather-y, tar-like birch. The leather is dry and subtle, not smoky at all. There is a woody quality that emerges as it develops, complementing the mossiness. Peppery spice follows, giving it a lift and complementing the dark woody-mossy accord nicely. I get a slight rubbery/plastic-y, chemical undertone, Bvlgari Black-style, but it only contributes to the image of the tattoo studio, while complementing the leather accord. It dries down to become a musky leather skin scent. Sillage and longevity are moderate. An olfactory artwork that is as unusual as it is excellent, I am very impressed with Ink. Unisex and transeasonal, it is somewhat wearable despite its edginess. One of my favourite Akros. This would make a great gift for a tattoo aficionado. 4.5/5.

Mmmm. I love this kind of scent. Office Siren... A little strange. Skin-like and bitter office smell, absolutely suitable for daily wear as it is quite neutral and inoffensive. I’d happily sit next to someone wearing it on a plane or bus. There’s a faint resemblance to pen ink or perhaps printer cartridges. To me, it’s evocative of a 90s or early 2000s office building, with IBM RPG code flickering on CRT monitors of beige desktop PCs, dust in the computer vents, and lots of lots of paperwork to do. It is leathery, plasticky, oily and papery. It feels like the color black. Or navy blue. It suits tattooed as much as it does someone in an office suit and expensive watch! Because it is so industrial, inky, and skin-like that makes it one of the most unisex perfumes I’ve tried. I suppose there’s a vague resemblance to Zoologist Squid, but Akro Ink is certainly its own thing. There’s also something of Prada Luna Rossa Black here, definitely less masculine, but just as versatile as it's hard to think of a scenario or season where this wouldn't fit. Nothing like Scotch Peat by Strangers Parfumerie, more like Fat Electrician. While not loud enough for formal dinners or statement moments (for that, I’d reach for Squid or O Hira) it is very nice. You wear it for yourself, not the rest of the room. Your coworkers might not smell it unless you’re sharing a chair ;) I can see why people find it disappointing, but I also think the ink note is better and more prominent when on skin compared to on a test strip. Considering buying this. Wowza!

Ink was a love at first sniff for me after trying a tester, and I knew that I wanted a full bottle and found a 100ml tester at a discounter for $59 shortly after the hunt. I don't have any tattoos,so I don't have a reference for what tattoo ink smells like. Ink opens with what I perceive as a fountain pen, ballpoint pen, or fresh newspaper ink, but the top note dissipates and blends nicely into the fragrance after about 15 minutes. This is a really airy fragrance for a vetiver and birch tar based fragrance because of the jasmine that is perfectly blended at just the right amount and lifts the fragrance. I am not a big fan of jasmine in men's fragrances, but in the case of ink, it really is the heart of the fragrance and what makes the fragrance special, as it completely blends with the other notes, enhancing the heavy dose of smokey vetiver and slightly animalistic birch tar. There are no discernible notes that overwhelm Ink, and it continues on to the drydown as a really nice birch, vetiver, and undiscernible jasmine, and the ink top note is no longer perceivable to my nose. The projection is medium and not a room filler, and you get wafts of sillage throughout the day. Ink is a very comforting and enjoyable fragrance to me, as a lover of birch tar and vetiver. The smoky vetiver and the great blending make Ink a smooth, enjoyable, and easy wear. The longevity is good, and it's about 8 hours. Ink is a simple and expertly blended fragrance that is not boring, in my opinion.

I was really surprised by how differently Akro Ink is perceived – almost every nose picks up something else. I knew right from the first sniff that it’s a polarizing, love-or-hate fragrance, but I didn’t expect this level of division. What puzzles me is that crowds rave about Encre Noire, yet many of those same people dismiss Ink as “too strong” or “too unusual.” Some even claim it’s more overpowering and eccentric than Akro’s Smoke – for me, it’s the exact opposite: Smoke feels unwearable, while Ink embraces me with a slightly sweet, inky warmth that makes me feel like a solitary visionary (a true maverick).😎 Where Encre Noire (I own the À L’Extrême flanker) makes me feel like a vampire emerging from a damp crypt after a hundred years – almost suffocating, with its rotting-wood and wet-earth darkness – Ink gives me a sense of uniqueness, even comfort. To my nose it’s not the “disgusting thing” (one self-proclaimed expert called it down below). If you ever loved Bvlgari Black, Ink might partially fill that void: both share a similarly unique, almost industrial aura, a touch of sweetness and modern niche character that makes it surprisingly wearable.

At the beginning it's plasticky, machiney, and medicinal-sterile, very atmospheric. I tattoo for fun and can mentally walk myself through the steps of sterilization while inhaling. Up close it's very like a printer ink cartridge. I haven't smelled a tattoo ink like the note in this, it's much more reminiscent of sticky ballpoint pens to me, but tattoo inks also vary in smell quite a bit by brand and formulation, so maybe Akro-style tattoo ink is out there somewhere. The more identifiable atmospheric notes fade quickly, and it becomes surprisingly safe and wearable--a cold-temperatured vetiver, pleasantly creamy and synthetic. I really like fragrances like this, with startling, strange openings which are tamed into something distinct and charming.

Super cool! I find Oliver Cresp really knows how to make fragrances versatile light and airy but also distinctive which really aligns with my personal taste. some will find it challenging for sure though. It’s a pretty true to name Ball point pen ink smell. Perfect for those who love dark and inky scents. For me this is kinda of the same accord in Fat Electrician that gives that burnt wire smell but striped of all that sweetness in that fragrance. Really interesting and addictive. The dry down is really interesting. You are kind of left with a creamy-coconuty musky vetiver. I now understand that one review saying that this need to be tried at the beach. Not what I was expecting at all

I take time around 3 weeks after i received a bottle from "WTF is this thing?" To "My lovely fragrance" i imagine it's will be smell like Killian Dark lord because of note but it's different. Ink is all about Birch tar with Vetiver with a hint of Indole (maybe Maritima?) that make this fragrance give you a animalic feeling of something stinky. in my 1st impression i think it's way too smokey but after wear this stuff 3-4 times the hint of stinky white floral change into something sweet and creamy that goes very well with a bomb of birth Tar Longivity is moderate but i think silleage is very good. not for people who prefer and easy to wear scent

as corny as it sounds, ink is much more of an experience than a fragrance, at least with it's opening. it opens with a metallic and aromatic blast of pen ink, like you had just cracked a bic pen all over your hands. deep underneath this sharp ink though, is a beautiful cacophony of natural smells, that work the incredible job of turning this from just a headache inducing ink smell in to a beautiful, earthy, dark, and almost gothic fragrance. it's incredibly wearable, to the point of being an almost comfort fragrance for me. it also lasts eons on clothes, to the point that's it's almost odd

This is incredible! The opening is... different. Slightly off putting but unique and intriguing. The dry down is phenomenal though. It definitely gives Santal 33 vibes, but I don’t get a pickle note. A great sillage bubble forms around you though. Three people who stopped in my office today asked what the amazing smell is. I’m ten hours in and still getting wafts from the sprays on my neck. It goes in and out though so nose blindness may be an issue for some, but trust me.., this thing projects and lasts forever! Getting a full size bottle yesterday! 9/10

Very unique. To my nose an excellent blend by Olivier. He really does accomplish the themes of this collection. Ink really does portray that plasticky aromatic aspect of ink. A plasticky, Play-Doh-y scent that makes you travel back to childhood memories of paper, ballpoint pens, markers, etc. Then the white floral aspect comes out as if you are playing with a Play-Doh ball standing next to a jasmine tree. Definitely not for everyone and a particular scent. Encre Noir's letter to a beautiful femenine romance, yet unisex as can be.

I am in looovveee with this scent. I’m currently sampling it and can’t wait to get my hands on a bottle. As someone with many tattoos, the initial spray does remind me of that sterile, sharp smell of ink and being in a tattoo shop. The dry down is a sexy blend of the vetiver and jasmine that I can’t get enough of. I can see how someone would prefer to wear this in the colder seasons or at night, but I would love this year round. And the fact that the scent lasts for 7hrs plus on me is a huge bonus.

stunning! not exactly a tattoo parlour feel to me, more like ballpoint pen ink stains inside a faux leather handbag. a bit of aftershave, an old jasmine tea packet and maybe a cigarette thrown in for a good measure. vaguely similar to encre noire, but here the ink is at the foreground whereas with lalique it’s more coniferous. the projection is pretty strong! (the tally of people subtly turning away from me on public transport is slowly creeping up. two sprays at most. i’m digging it)

Starts inky and sharp. Then turns inky and woody with a touch of sweetness. Dries down to a santal 33-like creamy and sweet woody scent. Really difficult to wash off. The top notes and base/drydown are so different. Reapplying is out of the question because of this. My first ink based scent and its ok. I’ll continue to look around for other ink forward fragrances. Wished it was more linear so that the ink stays throughtout the entire experience.

one of my favorites right now - a daily wearer. Agreed with other reviews comparing it to ballpoint pen ink, or maybe even xerox printer ink cartridge? Metallic at first before softening into the vetiver leatheriness. animalic quality in the dry down. The jasmine softens it and i think brings that sweet, airy quality. It’s crisp smelling in a “clean” way, but clean like a big machine in a lofty wide open space, not clean like a bath tub.

it's a cold winter's morning with clean bright sunlight streaming through dusty windows. standing up from your perch on an old leather couch, you back away and look at your finished drawing. ink is covering your hands and fingertips but miraculously stays away from the raw white edge of your paper. you have to wash your brushes, and you're excited to turn in your piece to your favorite teacher, who smells of cigarettes and diet coke.

Ink reminds me of taking a ride on Berlin U-Bahn. It smells like gasoline, rail lubricant, beer-stained seats with vinyl upholstery, and a crowd of people wearing second-hand pleather jackets. It reminds me of Scent One: Hinoki by CdG and The Door by DL Roelen but it's not moldy like the former nor too fetish-y like the latter. Despite being very dark, industrial, and edgy, it's still wearable. It's definitely a winter scent. 10/10

COLD LIKE LIQUOR ON THE ROCKS GOING DOWN YOUR THROAT. I AM AN UNLISTED SANDALWOOD NOTE TRUTHER. CREAMY!

If you are an old-school graphic designer and have nice memory of your first part-time job in printing house, or like the fresh smell of ink on paper, this is for you. Ive tried it with my colleagues (all of us are some sort of graphic designers, im the print one) and they said it should be called DTP :D I personally love it, its not strong on me, just nice printing ink work smell.

from the bottle this is everything as described - it brings to mind fluorescent lights, cold metal and fresh ink - and from my first impression it was too harsh to be wearable, but on the skin it dries down into something much softer and darker. wearing this feels like slipping on a vintage leather jacket. clean and completely unisex.

I pick up on the inkiness of this fragrance right away, but after 5 to 10 minutes I start getting a cedar note, likely traced to the listed birch note. I like this fragrance a lot, and trying the sample from the Akro sample set prompted me to get a bottle. At least an 8/10 for me, and with no buyer's remorse.

I really really like this fragrance. I was expecting something dark, brooding and inky. Instead this was a super interesting blend of inky jasmine. I would definitely buy a traveller or small sample for a themed night out. It is a fragrance that people will notice and ask about because it is so different.

One of my absolute favourite perfumes ever, and I will tell you why. It smells like the area between a fresh showered girl's lower abdomen and her upper inner thighs. Clean, musky, fresh and salty. No kidding. It is the most sexual perfume I have ever smelled. It will cause your body and mind to react.

No idea if it's my skin chemistry, but for the first hour or so, intense evocation of being at a safari/farm - woody, grassy, sweat, dried horse/elephant manure, that eases into musk and leather. Pen ink notes are there but only on a second or third sniff. Love this.

How beautiful this fragrance smell ❤️🔥 At first i was totally nose blind, can’t smell it at all !!! But after 6 hours magic happened It’s kind, well blended, all notes are well balanced. Perfectly soft to be totally unisex

Very inky and Gothic up front. Definitely unique. Dry down smells amazing. And this has great performance. My first Akro. Will have to try some others.

A wonderful inky niche, 9.5/10

The smell of a long since abandoned birch log cabin nearly razed to the ground, the dark, green, and earthy roots that are growing over it as nature tries to reclaim her turf, and a broken vial of black ink that seeps into what little openings remain in this old wood. The opening is a beautiful and dark mix of smokey and woody birch with a earthy green vetiver, very classy yet sexy. Then as this fragrance dries it gains a dark and mineral-like hot press ink note, as the birch, vetiver, and it all mix together and battle for dominance of the fragrance. This all comes together to form this very unique smokey, dark, and earthy fragrance, but still somehow safe and familiar. The ink note is surprisingly accurate, and any artists like myself or anyone who works with ink regularly will probably agree. Very minimal if any jasmine is noticeably present, mostly there to slightly freshen up and clean the notes, because without this would be very thick and heavy, but because it's there: it comes off surprisingly airy. 6/10 I like this scent, and I really dig the ink note, but it comes off a bit too mature for my tastes. This leans pretty masculine to my nose, and I'd personally say it would be perfect for a man 30+ or 25+ in an office/formal setting, but wear what you like. It has a nice sillage to it where it's present but not overbearing. Can see this being used Fall through mid Spring as this would be cloying under major heat.

I first smelled Ink at a scent store on the 'unusual' shelf, and was dumbfounded by how photorealistic it was― it smells exactly like black ink. I didn't test it on my skin, a mistake because after leaving it was all I could think about. I even told my friends who don't really care about fragrance about what an interesting smell I'd smelled. At that point I knew I needed to order a sample. On my skin, it smells exactly like ink at first (as it did when I sprayed it on a test strip in the store), in a way so realistic it almost smells like it shouldn't be on my skin. I was so excited to see how it would evolve with wear. It has this kind of addicting quality, I couldn't stop sniffing my wrist. Over time, a creamy woodiness emerges. I found myself so curious how it would smell to others around me. One wear had me thinking about buying a full bottle. On the second wear, it wasn't what I remembered. On one wrist I wore Tuscon by Astier de Villatte and on the other I wore Ink. Compared to Tuscon, Ink smelled overly synthetic and grape-y (which interestingly, until now, I've only picked up on in fragrances from Juliette Has a Gun). I think I need more time with this one, but it definitely has me intrigued.

One of my first forays into niche perfumery. I wear Designer EDTs during my work week and am looking to get niche EDPs for my days off. Got this and DS and Durga El Cosmico on the same day, and am now getting around to giving this puppy a good test. The opening is what first drew me in. Heavy smoked woods. The birch and vetiver are the primary driving forces of this fragrance. The ink accord is there, but pretty subtle on my skin; and is expressed with more of a mineral-y note. As for the perfumers backstory of this being the smell of fresh tattoos, I would have no idea as I don't have any tattoos. Nevertheless, great scent. The longevity is fairly good. My general application technique is 3 sprays to the neck, one on the back of the head, one to the back of each ear, inside of the elbow, inside of the wrist. I got 3.5 hours of strong wafts. 3 more hours of medium silage. At this point, the smokiness of the vetiver has subsided, and the birch and jasmine start to make a more present point. After than, its 2 hours of smooth woody skin scent before fading out. More than happy with the fragrance, especially for the price point of fragrances of comparable quality.

The first thing to come to mind was aromatic; similar to mainstream men’s fragrances that reminds me of Armani Code or Luna Rossa Carbon, although Ink has more of a “certain something” that makes it different enough to own by itself, if you enjoy that sort of scent. If it wasn’t called Ink I most likely wouldn’t think of that smell. It’s very safe for any occasion, whether it be the office or a night out. Probably because of the name, I imagine a heavily tatted guy in all black working at a tattoo shop would enjoy this. I smelled my container of India ink and also smelled my bottle of Dynamic black tattoo ink, and can barely make the connection. I hope it’s just because I’m anosmic to the accord, because I find all of the Akro fragrances I smelled to be close to photorealistic. Overall, quite enjoyable, safe, and easy to wear. EDIT: upon second wear, I now smell ink, but not tattoo ink, but like as another reviewer smelled, an exploded bic pen. There’s also some smoky, rubbery notes. These notes are the frosting on top of an otherwise aromatic base.

Absolutely shocked to not see lime listed as a note here, because there is an intense bracing lime in this that brings fresh sweetness to the metallic inky notes. I also get no jasmine whatsoever. There is some smoke and leather in here but not enough to keep it from being fresh This was so interesting and modern. I would say it lives in the realm of a sports cologne but it's a great take on it. Having given and recieved many tattoos and spent much time in tattoo shops, I won't say I get that from it, but tattoo shops mostly smell like disinfectant and green soap, and neither of those come through in this fragrance to me. The ink here is far closer to traditional ink for a pen, like crackint open a fresh bottle of FW Ink. I'd say it's a fresh, masculine leaning cologne without straying completely away from unisex. Just quite unique and pleasant. It's like a sporty CK/Polo type of fragrance but for people who hang out in tattoo shops. Unique but remains a crowdpleaser. For sure worth a smell.

Ink is suprisingly wearable. The most prominent note here is vetiver. It has a sweetness to it that puts it in the register of ballpoint pen ink rather than earthy, wet India ink. There is a littttle gasoline undercurrent in here that I find quite pleasant; it's not oily like a gas station, but more car exhaust on asphalt: a whiff of parking garage as another reviewer mentioned. There is also kind of a carmex-y gooey element to Ink that might be the jasmine rearing its head, though this fragrance does not at all read as floral. It's really not as extreme or crazy of a scent as some reviews led me to believe, but it's definitely not boring either. Ink does have a lightness to it that makes it even sort of...polite. I enjoy this, would def wear, but I was not blown away. I wanted something a little more heady and INKY! edit: ok i kinda want this now...like a fb. idk it wasn't as inky as expected but it is a really cool and truly unique fragrance. love that caramel-bic pen juice.

Ink isthe most recent release (2022) from Akro as of today, similarly one-word-named and texturally interesting to some of the prior entries. It’s dark, raw, and has the signature (and self-described) blend of vetiver, tar, and birch that, to me, excellently captures the concept of ink. I think the vetiver is the single biggest standout of the three, fostering a dirtiness that perhaps slightly exceeds most ink that I’ve smelled, and in that respect it does lean somewhat toward a Lalique Encre Noire vibe, albeit without some of the ashy qualities of vetiver, but there’s definitely an overlap. Overall, I think it’s well-done, high-performing, and, like most of the Akro line, pretty reasonable in terms of niche pricing, at $185 for 100ml, sold by Luckyscent and another US-based boutique or too, I believe, in addition to the house site. 7 out of 10

The opening blast is strongly reminiscent of Santal 33 and co., but once that fades off you are rewarded with an enjoyable woodsy and smokey composition in the same realm as MMW and/or 24 Rue. I get zero birch wood in this, instead birch tar works as the main constituent, along with a hot iron note that formulates an industrial aroma. There is also a piquant note of palo santo, subtle vetiver and a hint of cardamom spice. In the dry down, there is a creamy, lactonic texture created by the jasmine that smoothens out the edges. Overall, nicely done regardless if the name does not do this fragrance any justice. I find Ink artistic and modern even if it brings nothing new to its eminent genre

Reminds me of the art room in high school and college. Indian Ink was one of my favorite mediums to use and it inevitably got everywhere on my hands. This smells like the lovely dried out dregs on the rim of an Ink bottle starting to peel away and flake every time you screw the cap back on. Resinous, woody, unisex leaning masculine. It's one of those fragrances most people wouldn't consider wearable, but rather an experience. I'm happy to wear it until my little tester is gone because of the nostalgia. The longevity good, about 4 to 6 hrs and stays close to the skin (maybe it's different if you have a spray instead of a tiny dabber, through).

Not sure about the tattoo inspiration/association - as a tattoo artist, I think tattoos don't really smell like anything - or anything like this fragrance, at least. If anything, tattooing smells like tincture of green soap, healing film and cleaning products for the shop. Ink is 100% reminiscent of actual calligraphic ink, though - even down to a slight papery note. The floral notes are so well-blended they are almost unnoticeable, they just round out the inkiness and make it more wearable for any gender. It's very pleasant, inoffensive and simultaneously unique in its own way - perfect office scent if you think about it!

It seems that it smells completely different on every skin. For me, wearing it is not as challenging as I see in local reviews—certainly not as challenging as Black Afghano, for example. While it smells very unusual for the first ten minutes, reminiscent of ink mixed with plastic, after a while it settles down and softens considerably. Personally, the birch and leather remind me a lot of Blamage by Nasomatto, and I'm surprised that no one mentions it here. It's just a very dry, woody, leathery, and calming perfume that definitely won't scare anyone away. Surprisingly great longevity and projection.

I don't mind this, but I'm not a big fan of vetiver; I wouldn't have bothered to test Ink except I wanted to try everything in the house, which I do recommend since they're all interesting. I can't do a side by side comparison, but it makes me think of ELDO Fat Electrician in the way that they're both unconventional, almost novelty vetivers. So vetiver enthusiasts should probably check this out, but those who aren't vetiver fans will probably want to pass. I do recommend the Akro sample set though and will try anything new this house puts out in the future.

reminiscent of acrylic paint drying in a studio, my middle school maths teacher's perfume, and of course the jars upon jars of pelican black quick dry ink i used to go through. surprisingly one-dimensional at first with seemingly little to offer other than shock value or a nostalgic scent, this slowly develops a bright peppery vetiver aftertaste on my skin that still lingers the day after; a very positive surprise. i look forward to layering this and recommend it to anyone looking for an edgy memory-laden scent with a pleasant twist in its dry-down.

I am utterly terrified of her. I don't know why the other reviews made this sound normal. Maybe it's just my skin but to me this smells of a sterile OR. Plastic, fluorescent lights, scalpel. I wore this and let it sit for maybe...3 minutes? and was so unsettled by the scent I had to go take a shower to get it off. Gave it to my sister who loves it to pieces but did say it had a very industrial, elegantly plastic smell to it. Pretty lady with the indiscreet imprint of a large hammer in her bag.

This is definitely not for everyone, but it's an incredible fragrance. It's like an anti-perfume. If you want to be known as the weird artist, writer or musician who is always so buried in notebooks and cassette tapes that you've actually started to smell like them, then this is the fragrance for you. You can wear this anywhere in any season, because it's so unique. People will walk away wondering "what was that?"

Ink is definitely not for everyone, but on me it smells just like an inkwell, or the inside of a printer. Mechanical, deep black, industrial and synthetic in an extremely cool way. It's modern and sleek and weirdly sexy. It wouldn't smell out of place in either an office or a BDSM dungeon. If xenomorphs are a "hear me out" for you, get yourself a sample.

I’ve had my bottle for 3 years and can’t tell if it’s light compromised or I went nose blind to it. Made it about 2/5 through and the fragrance went from strong ink to an airy birch scented cloud. Not awful but really feels like something’s missing. This might be my first “off” bottle since starting my collection.

Very dry and smoky - definitely dig this. Birch wood comes in very nicely as it mingles with smoke This feels like a dryer more earthy take on Tam Dao EDP on my skin. The Diptyque goes rubbery on my while this stays dry. Definitely appreciate how the vetiver peaks out in the base... but I think I could do with out
