Azlan Oud Amber Edition

#1107 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a sample sprayette and I will order a full bottle. This comes off a little fruiter than most oriental woody fragrances. Moderate performance, which seems typical of the Azlan line. Similar to Clive Christian "1872" though the florals are not as complex, and similar to Aqua di Gio Essenza, but not as sour. What I probably appreciate the most is how dominant the clary sage note is here. It gives the scent a masculine, outdoorsy, herbal quality you don't get when the sage is more of a background player. This is car pool, elevator and small office safe, but I think it would also be a good date scent.

For a collector who appreciates the density of "beast mode" scents, this might feel a bit thin and overly synthetic at first spray. It’s loud, but it lacks the weight you'd expect from an Extrait. The Mid: This is where the composition gets messy. The combination of Watery Notes and Leather is an incredibly difficult pairing to pull off. Instead of feeling refreshing or rugged, it comes across as a bit discordant—like a fresh aquatic scent that got muddied by a heavy, chemical suede. The Base: The dry down leans heavily into the gourmand territory with Caramel, Vanilla, and Tonka. While it definitely lasts, it turns into a very generic, "mall-style" sweetness. It loses the "niche" edge and ends up feeling a bit cloying rather than sophisticated. Why it misses the mark: Identity Crisis: It’s trying to be fresh, leathery, and gourmand all at once. By refusing to commit to one lane, it fails to deliver the technical precision found in better-engineered blends. Synthetic Texture: There is a distinct "scratchiness" to the notes. For someone who values the high oil concentrations of Middle Eastern perfumery, this feels like it relies too much on aromachemicals to do the heavy lifting. Lack of Balance: The caramel in the base is far too loud for the aromatic top. It doesn't transition smoothly; it just eventually collapses into a sugary woodiness. Verdict: It earns a 3/5 because the longevity is undeniably high—it won't quit on you during a long shift. However, if you're looking for a fragrance with "soul" and a well-constructed pyramid, this isn't it. It’s a powerhouse, but it’s not a masterpiece.
