The beauty of timeless Rose-Oud The notes: Citrus notes, Green Rose, herbs, Saffron Powdery notes, spices, Bulgarian Rose, Taif Rose Musky notes, Patchouli, Oud, Mysore Sandalwood, Amber Resin Ward is one of the many decants of artisanal fragrances that I have owned for a long time. I love artisanal fragrances, but it is often difficult to find the right place and opportunity to wear them. I don’t really care what other people think of my fragrances, but in Finland - where many places have a “please come without a scent” policy - I sometimes feel guilty when I bathe in strong artisanal perfumes. And I do love to bathe in fragrance; I really don’t know how to apply them sparingly. “Ward” means rose in Arabic. If we set aside its high-end quality, it is probably the most conventional fragrance in my collection in terms of its profile. The difference compared to more commercial fragrances lies in its richness: it is oily, full of high-quality natural ingredients, which makes it intense, incredibly long-lasting, and at the same time a more moderate projector. Above all, this is a clear oriental fragrance. It follows a classic structure, combining four ingredients that work remarkably well together and are frequently used in rose compositions. While I sometimes wish for something more imaginative, this combination is undeniably reliable: rose, patchouli, saffron, and oud. Both the rose and patchouli are dark, even somewhat gloomy. I don’t know if it’s entirely accurate to describe the scent as gothic, but that is how it feels to me - though there is also something sacred about it. I don’t detect anything fresh or citrusy. It is not sweet in the way rose often is in modern fragrances, nor do I find it powdery. Overall, the scent feels balanced, atmospheric, impressive, and poetic. Although oud is not listed among the notes here on FRAGRANTICA nor on Parfumo, this is clearly a rose-oud composition. Many of the listed notes likely originate from “Shamama,” a traditional blend of natural ingredients that includes oud. Shamama is typically crafted through the distillation of a complex mixture of over 40–50 natural materials - herbs, spices, roots, flowers, seeds, and woods such as Oud and Sandalwood. Its profile is deep, earthy, warm, and spicy-woody. It often opens with a pungent herbal or saffron-like note, transitions into a floral-woody heart, and settles into a base of agarwood, sandalwood, amber, and musk. In addition to oud, amber deserves to be mentioned in the list of notes. Al Shareef Oudh refers to it as “Oriental amber resin.” Mysore sandalwood, together with musk, creates a sensual base for the fragrance, although the musk does not develop into a distinctly animalic or overtly erotic tone. In line with the character of Shamama, Ward opens somewhat sharp and naturally very powerful. As is often the case with artisanal fragrances, the first moments are not always the most pleasant. However, it softens quickly, and different nuances begin to emerge. Each time you wear it, the scent feels slightly different. The spices in particular feel very alive - it’s like a dance that isn’t fully choreographed, changing subtly with every performance. The experience is strongly influenced by temperature, and I personally prefer to wear artisanal fragrances in warm weather. The cold Finnish winter seems to “freeze” the scent, preventing it from developing properly on the skin. Ward is not about innovation or surprise, but about quiet confidence in tradition. It doesn’t try to reinvent the rose-oud genre - it simply executes it with depth, authenticity, and a sense of ritualistic beauty. While it may not always match my craving for something novel, it offers something just as valuable: a grounding, almost meditative presence on the skin. Ward reminds me that sometimes the most meaningful fragrances are not the ones that challenge you, but the ones that feel timeless, familiar, and effortlessly complete. I don’t usually comment on price - if I truly like a scent, I consider it worth the cost. As much as I appreciate and love artisanal fragrances, I haven’t started buying them in full bottles. First of all, I would find myself in the rabbit hole even worse than now, and I would probably end up with hundreds of small bottles that I’d be afraid to use (Anything under 100 ml feels like an abomination to me). In reality, I would only use them at home. I can easily spend €1000 or more on a Roja fragrance (not referring to current production), but I get the same amount of joy from artisanal fragrances by buying decants - and those will still last me forever. Fully agree with the reviews below. Beautiful scent, wonderfully blended. Very, very nice. Quality is extremely obvious & good luck topping it at any cost. There's an aspect of a closed rose opening as it goes on I must admit is quite compelling. There is also depth here I find missing from similar scents. Not for everyone, but a clear 10/10 for what it is & is meant to be.

This is one of the most luxurious rose fragrance you will find. Spicy ambery rose that can be worn all year round and smells so elegant and rich. The only downside is the longevity which is moderate (up to 6 hours).

Ward might be the best rose sandalwood combo i have tried. This composition is not so much about complexity as it is about ingredients and quality. Rose is light and very fresh, tender and aromatic, instantly relaxing. Sandalwood is really nice as well, very smooth with a perfect balance between green and spicy buttery shades. Rest of notes listed i cant say i really smell, but they must be there to give accents and turn composition to what it is. Longevity is about 5 hrs, and projection is maybe 1 foot.

Very traditionally constructed Arabian attar style scent centered around a very nice Bulgarian rose. The perfume opens with this central note and slight patchouli. As it starts developing, one can detect hints of amber and saffron. It settles into a base of sandalwood and musk. The unisex scent has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity. Quite naturally beautiful because of high quality ingredients but unexceptional, considering many such offerings on the market. Enjoy!
