Dapper 1959

In the days where I went crazy and acquired 3 packs of sample sets from Alexandria Fragrances, this scent was one of them. I hate to say this, but from a clone house, this original release is very good if you like barbershop scents. For context, if this was released in a high-end designer bottle (e.g. Tom Ford), this would be talked about like Beau De Jour is right now. But what direction does it go in as a fougere? I have not smelled ALL fougeres to have come out but I've obviously smelled more of them than the average non-enthusiast. Dapper 1959 does not go in the direction of Beau De Jour or Milano Cento. Meaning it's not bracing, cooling, sharp and herbal like Beau De Jour nor is it spicy or cloves-heavy like Milano Cento. Dapper instead starts with a classical bitter/fresh citrus opening that lasts maybe 10-15min. Then you get talcum powder with some nice understated sweetness. THEN a leather accord is infused in the heart and drydown and that's when your noise understands this is not a cheap outing. All throughout the heart and drydown, there is a background layer of anise - admittedly I'm not a fan of anise but here it's balanced so that it's always in the background but never a dominating note (like it is in Geo F Trumper's Paisley, which I hate). There's something about this that makes me view it as a higher class version of Tabac. 8/10 YT Channel - The Scentrovert

Dapper 1959 is a modern barbershop gem. It consists of many traditional barbershop notes while managing to avoid smelling like it’s from the past. The ‘modernity’ is in the blending. Whereas the vintage powerhouses often feature a dominant note that sets them apart (the strong anise in Azzaro Pour Homme, pine in One Man Show, moss in Paco Rabanne, etc), Dapper is so seamlessly blended that one could never say it’s a ____bomb. The opening citrus is soft and lovely- no ‘bathroom cleaner’ accord at all. It transitions into the powdery, aromatic mid with a mix of lavender, musk and anise. I get just a hint of patchouli- just enough, but never overbearing- and then the soft leather base brings things to a gentle close. It’s not sweet, but it isn’t bitter, animalic, or mossy either, thus avoiding the ‘dated’ moniker oft applied to fragrances with these descriptors. Longevity is very good- I could smell it easily 8 hours in. Projection is modest but quite appropriate for this kind of fragrance. It’s a shame that few people will ever try this perfume simply because it’s from a “clone house,” but AF’s original creations are very well done. As a reviewer stated below, put the same juice in a lux brand bottle and people would rave about how retro-cool it is.

Excellent take on the chypre genre (citrus + lavender + aromatic herbs + patchouli + oakmoss). Based on the notes, you'd expect something like Dior's Eau Sauvage and you'd be right. It's like the thicker, sweeter, and spicier brother of Eau Sauvage. More suited for winter as the light florals are removed and replaced with warming anise & pepper. Adding the leather make it almost more of a classic chypre as that adds back in that hint of animalic or dirtiness. (Note that's just a hint). The spice and leather make it more clearly masculine than citrus aromatic focused Eau Sauvage but it still retains the classic gentlemanly feel. If you like beastmode, this is beastmode. It last all day on my skin and weeks on my clothes.

This is classy barbershop scent. Really masculine fougere fragrance, fresh, spicy, classy and longlasting. To me its in the same ballpark as YSL Rive Gauche and Tom Ford Beau de Jour, that style of fragrance. Just spectacular fragrance, longevity and quality very very good, nothing else to say. All year round and nice as a signature scent.

This is fantastic. It projects has great longevity and I don't go anosmic to it so I get to keep enjoying it as I wear it. It's got me looking into other barbershop fragrances to buy. I got a sample from Alexandria and it lasted all of 2 days and I ordered a bottle right away. Love it.

This is a great modern barbershop fragrance! Bright in the opening and drying down to a beautiful powdery lavender scent and that's why I personally consider AF a niche house. It's a love for me that can be worn in winter,spring,summer and fall. Get it,smell it,wear it,enjoy it!

This is beautiful... it legit lasts all day and leaves a trail and has gotten numerous compliments. If you like barbershop scents then you have to try this... the citrus and lavender and spices make this thing amazing... can use any time of year!

I agree with the previous reviewer that this gives off a classy barbershop vibe. Though to my nose it is more on the lines of Chanel's Pour Monsieur EDP with added patchouli and leather. Great performance.

So I got a 5ml sample of this from Alexandria and I am nearing the end of my sample. This is exactly what others have described it as: classic barbershop fragrance, lavender, lemon verbena (definitely smells like lemon verbena rather than just a generic citrus), spicy from the anise, patchouli, leather. I definitely pick up all of that and this stuff smells really good and lasts probably 6-8 hours which is perfect for this type of scent. However, I occasionally get something "off" / dirty smelling from this, which I can't quite understand. I also go nose blind to this stuff, so if I get to the end of the day and can't smell it, I'll reapply. I've learned not to do that unless I take a shower, because I get that same nasty/ dirty smell if I reapply this. So I suspect it actually lasts much longer than I can actually smell. The only comment I've gotten on this was after reapplying (about 5-6 pm ish) someone had a very negative reaction. Comments from others aren't the end all be all, but take that for what you will..

Dapper 1959 is an excellent, masculine barbershop type of fragrance, spicy and fresh - exactly what you would expect for a barbershop scent. It reminds me of Zino and Beau De Jour - closer to Zino since Beau De Jour has a bit more sweetness and floral accord which Zino and Dapper lack. Another one that came to mind was Azzaro Pour Homme which is maybe about only 60% similar; Zino is closer. Dapper also strikes me as more natural smelling while Zino is more synthetic. Anyway, if you like these kinds of fragrances, Dapper 1959 is a perfectly safe blind buy. Where Dapper really shines is in its performance. Both Zino and Beau De Jour have dismal performance for me. Dapper was still going strong after 10 hours and the next morning after about 17 hours, it was still a noticeable skin scent. Probably would last much longer on clothing. I'm glad I never bought a bottle of Beau De Jour and will be de-cluttering Zino from my collection once I get a bottle of Dapper. Alexandria has a real winner here.

This is a barbershop fragrance in the truest sense of the word. This smells like something that a barber would spray on you after getting a haircut. It’s powdery, fresh, and musky. It’s along the lines of Old Spice or Clubman Pinaud. It doesn’t smell like the aforementioned fragrances; however, you get a similar vibe. Therefore, this fragrance doesn’t smell premium, even though I do find the scent enjoyable. I wear this on the weekends during the day and while running errands. I probably wouldn’t wear this to work or on a date night. Given the fragrances that this resembles, I think it’s slightly overpriced. In addition, as of this review, this fragrance is rated a 4.57. No way. I would rate this around a 4. Bottom line, if you do not like barbershop fragrances, stay away. However, if you do enjoy this genre of fragrances, this might be something you would want to try.

I wish I would have purchased a larger bottle! This is marvelous; a warm, fresh, clean, unique, barbershop fragrance. After first spraying, I thought, "This is nice." But Dapper 1959 evolves during the dry down into something way more than the sum of its parts. I'm a big fan of barbershop scents and this one checks all the boxes. Performance is through the roof. Extremely nice smooth fougere DNA. AF knocked the barbershop scent out of the park. Opens up with citrusy lavender. Dries down to an extremely smooth sexy lavender. This is no where near as spicy as Azzaro Pour Homme. If you like quintessential barbershop DNAs, you would be doing yourself a disservice not trying this.

1st impression- shares elements from Bracken men + B&BW Flannel men’s collection. Main note here is the sweet, earthy patchouli. Damn you patchouli.. oh how I fucking hate you 😡 for ruining countless scents for me 🤬🤬🤬🤬 Carries a warm clove/ cinnamon/ anise/ Patchouli aroma. Definitely Autumn 🍂 fall vibes

I love barbershop frags, but I have Tom Ford Beau de Jour amongst others so I don’t really “need” this — but a trusted member recommended it and it sure does sound good! Can any of you tell me if your bottle has needed time to macerate or was it ready to wear when you got it? And if you also own Beau de Jour, would say this is more or less powdery than BdJ? Which has just the right amount of powder for me (a bit but not too much).
