Nordic Fougère

Continuing my time with Alfred Dunhill’s Signature Collection, I now travel from the lavender fields of Provence to the Scandinavian north with Dunhill Nordic Fougère, a fragrance that leans into one of perfumery’s most classic styles while aiming to reinterpret it through a cooler, more modern perspective. The fougère is a structure deeply rooted in tradition, often defined by its balance of freshness, aromatics, and understated masculinity, but the inclusion of “Nordic” in the name suggests something more atmospheric, something crisp, airy, and almost icy in its presentation. There is an expectation here of a fragrance that feels clean and composed, yet chilled in tone, as if the familiar fougère structure has been cooled down and refined. Let’s see if this interpretation keeps things ice-cold while still staying true to its fougère roots once it settles onto the skin. Opening: The opening is aromatic, green, and citrusy. The primary notes I get are basil, kumquat, geranium, and bamboo leaf, with basil and kumquat leading the composition. Basil immediately sets the tone with an aromatic, fresh, and leafy greenness that carries a faint peppery edge, feeling more like basil still on the plant rather than anything cooked or dried. It gives the opening a vivid and natural freshness while anchoring the aromatic structure. Kumquat follows closely, introducing a bright and juicy citrus accord that blends tartness with a subtle sweetness and a faint bitterness from the peel. This adds a vibrant lift to the composition, keeping the green elements from feeling too prominent. Geranium works in the background with a fresh, slightly minty character that leans away from its floral side and instead enhances the cooling, aromatic quality of the opening. That cooling effect is further reinforced by the bamboo leaf, which contributes a watery, airy freshness with a soft vegetal quality, giving the fragrance a light and almost “cool air” sensation. The result is a crisp and refreshing opening where aromatic greens, juicy citrus, and airy freshness come together in a clean and invigorating introduction. Dry Down: The dry down remains aromatic, green, and citrusy. The primary notes I get are still basil, kumquat, geranium, and bamboo leaf, with basil and kumquat continuing to lead the composition. Overall, this stage feels like a direct continuation of the opening, making Nordic Fougère a fairly linear fragrance throughout the wear. The aromatic greenery of the basil remains prominent, maintaining that fresh, leafy character, while the kumquat continues to provide its bright and slightly sweet citrus lift. Geranium sustains its minty freshness in the background, reinforcing the cooling, aromatic tone, and the bamboo leaf continues to contribute its watery, airy quality that gives the fragrance its light and modern “cool air” effect. As the fragrance settles, however, a few subtle shifts begin to emerge. A gentle sweetness from vanilla starts to appear beneath the surface, softening the sharper edges of the aromatic and citrus notes. At the same time, sandalwood introduces a faint, smooth woodiness, while patchouli adds just a touch of earthy depth to the base. These elements never overpower the core structure but instead provide a subtle foundation that helps distinguish the dry down from the opening. The result is a smooth continuation of the opening where aromatic greens, bright citrus, and airy freshness are gently supported by soft sweetness and understated woods. Performance: Projection opens at a strong level, reaching out to around six feet within the first hour and establishing an immediate presence. Sillage matches that intensity, leaving behind a heavy and clearly noticeable scent trail that reinforces the fragrance’s fresh and aromatic character. After approximately three to four hours, performance remains largely unchanged, with both projection and scent trail maintaining much of their initial strength. As the fragrance continues to develop, performance begins to taper gradually. Around the seven to eight hour mark, projection softens to roughly three to four feet, while the scent trail becomes quieter but still noticeable while moving. The fragrance eventually transitions into a skin scent somewhere around the nine to ten hour mark. Overall, this represents a marginal improvement in performance compared to yesterday's Valensole Lavender, offering a slightly longer lasting and more consistent presence throughout the wear. When to Wear: Nordic Fougère is best suited for spring and summer, where its fresh and icy character can fully shine in warmer conditions. The fragrance feels most natural during the daytime, when its crisp, cooling profile aligns with lighter and more energetic settings. Its clean and refreshing nature makes it an excellent choice for casual wear, whether you’re out running errands or spending time outdoors. It also works very well in an office environment, where its airy and unobtrusive presence comes across as polished and easy to wear. However, its light and cooling profile makes it less suited for special occasions or formal events, where a richer and more substantial fragrance would generally feel more appropriate. Blind Buy: Nordic Fougère is a relatively safe blind buy, particularly for those who enjoy fresh, aromatic fragrances. The overall scent profile stays firmly within a clean, designer-leaning style that is easy to understand and widely appealing. While the note pyramid includes some less common elements such as kumquat, basil, and bamboo leaf, none of them come across as challenging or unusual in the way they present themselves on skin. Instead, they blend seamlessly into a smooth, crisp, and approachable composition. Because of this, most people who gravitate toward fresh and aromatic fragrances will likely find Nordic Fougère easy to wear and enjoy without much risk. In fact, between the aromatics and cool, icy tones, I'm reminded of my recent experience with YSL's Y Iced Cologne. Final Verdict: I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Nordic Fougère, even more so than my wearing of Valensole Lavender. The way the fragrance blends aromatic freshness, bright citrus, and that distinct “icy” cooling effect feels perfectly aligned with its name, creating a profile that comes across as both refreshing and quietly unique. There is a smoothness to the composition that allows each element to work together seamlessly, resulting in a scent that feels cohesive while still offering something slightly different from the typical fresh aromatic category. Performance is another positive, showing a noticeable improvement over Valensole Lavender and providing a more consistent presence throughout the wear. What stands out most, however, is how the combination of its individual notes comes together to create a scent profile that feels fresh yet distinctive, rather than generic. It manages to remain easy to wear while still offering enough character to keep things interesting. Overall, this is a fragrance I could genuinely see myself adding to my collection, as it strikes a strong balance between versatility, uniqueness, and wearability. wWOWw! Ive watched many positive reviews, but NONE of them have impressed upon me just how freakin' AMAZE-BALLZ Dunhill's- Arctic Fougere truley is! Its fresh, slightly powdery, casual yet can most definately be dressed up. So far its a 9 outta 10 (pending performance) which Ive read aint half bad. Some may call me CA-RAZY, but I swear that to (my nose) Arctic Fougere reminds me of a Modernized, slightly sweeter, fruitiern creamier take on Lalique Home (Lion Head). I know this isnt a popular opinion which honestly surprises me, but YEAH! Thats sorta what Im getting and its DEVINE! Now, with that said it would most def NOT be redundant to own both like I do bc Lalique Homme goes in a drastically different direction, drying down to a more formal/business, Vetiver/Leather/Slightly Smokey transition. Arctic Fougere on the other hand goes sweeter, more fruity, slightly more vanillic, fresh-bamboo leaf, slightly more Casual direction take on this awesome fragrance, but again can absolutelybe dressed up. A real Spring/Summer STUNNER! This Dunhill Signature Line is sorely underrated for sure! I now own Egyprian Smoke, Mongolian Cashmere, Agar Wood and Arctic Fougere and they are ALL SUPERB, and even at the og retail over $100 price? MORE THAN WORTH IT! Just WOW! Ill be back with a performance update because PERFORMANCE MATTERS no matter shat some reviewers tell us and its NOT "Tabu" or "Tacky" to feel that way!! lol! CHEERS YA'LL!

The scent is evoking Nordic forests on a warm summer night in the forest by some lake with the slight fresh aquatic, mossy scent being at the same time pine needles and woody scent. Quite ambitious scent, may I say! To my nose, fairly brilliant and whole. Obviously, you can not go wrong with this one. It is suitable for just about any occasion either in winter or a summer. It will help your sweaty body in summer months and ooze freshness in winter months. Longevity is about 4-6 hours, again enough for a day at work, and it lingers, but it may dissipate fast in warmer and humid climate, because the scent is quite light. It is not much of a scent on a feminine side or even unisex, but I can understand that women will like the freshness. The scent is inviting and easy, with more active undertone, and you may feel that you want to move with this scent on you or with a person wearing this perfume. On a final note, I do not agree with other reviewers here taht you probably have this scent and that it is boring. My clear answer is no, you do not have this scent and no it does not go Montblanc way as several others suggest. Montblanc's Starwalker is cutting fresh and nauseating and Individuell goes in a complete different direction, pluss iIt does not have Moschino Uomo's warmth and punching spiciness or Chanel Allure Sport's type of freshness.

Name really captures the vibe. Lavender fougere vibes but with a crisp coolness that reminds me of cold crisp summers high in the Norwegian woods. There's a metholated coolness to it. I know lavender isn't in the notes, but I definitely get vibes of it. Unique and interesting...might be bottleworthy. Scent: 8 / Sillage: 7 / Longevity: 7

Gucci Guilty EDP, a little denser and a little less rosy, slightly better performance. I really like it. Sad to learn this whole line is discontinued.

First impressions: This is a pleasant, versatile masculine fragrance that smells traditional without being "dated." The bamboo, kumquat, and geranium notes jump out at me right away, with the vanilla and sandalwood taking over soon after. It's a nice, smooth base, and I have to say I'm impressed by how well-blended the fragrance is as a whole; I can pick up every note, besides maybe the patchouli. I do with the opening lasted a little longer, though. If I were to make a comparison, I'd say this fragrance is what Dunhill London should have been, with an emphasis placed on fresh spicy notes rather than sweet ones. It smells like a gentlemanly fragrance for younger people, something a young professional working his first office job could wear confidently when he'd rather be introduced, not announced. Oh, and one more thing: It's not a fougere! There's no lavender here and there's no coumarin either. I don't mean to be a stickler about this, because the fragrance definitely smells good and performs well...but if you're going into this expecting something like Azzaro Pour Homme, Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme, or Dunhill Edition, you're going to be let down.

Notes in the pyramid notwithstanding, Nordic Fougere struck me as a variation on a blue masculine fragrance theme. Did not smell like Dylan or Bleu or Explorer Blue, etc. just brought to mind the generic idea of a blue fragrance, fresh and aromatic. While sillage was moderate, I was surprised by the longevity. Got a good 9 hours out of it, getting whiffs at the late stages without moving while watching a movie. I'm giving it a Like because it is a pleasant enough fragrance although there's really nothing outstanding about it. It would do well if you are looking for this type of fragrance. If you already have a few in your collection, it would be redundant.

The name is a bit misleading, but this is a solid fragrance unlike anything else in my collection. As mentioned before, this is not a fougere, but there are a couple of the classic aromatic fougere elements to it. If you want a detailed breakdown, Dogfather absolutely nailed it below, but for a quick description: it's a blue freshie cosplaying as a fougere. It's not a big projector after the opening is finished, but it stays on the skin in a small, subtle bubble for about 5-6 hours for me. 8/10

Not your typical fougere like those old school masculine that put hair on the chest, it's rather unique with kumquat note, very modern and pleasant with vanilla (not sweet and obnoxious candy like) in the dry down. This is very good for casual wear, office as well for date night, but not for clubbing of course.

It's nice, smells like a better blended and higher end Versace Signature to my nose

Not really getting the Versace PH similarity other than the fact that either of these would work well in hot weather. I do actually see a bit of resemblance to Montblanc Individuel and even a tiny bit to Diesel's Fuel for Life (both sans raspberry) in that it has a certain powdery feel. I haven't smelled Starwalker, so I can't compare it to that. While it does have green notes, I don't think of a typical fougere when I smell this. It definitely smells fresh and clean, but offers something a bit different, mixing blue and green elements. Office safe, easy wear. Decent longevity... and yea, the guy below me is right: Just read TheDogfather's review if you want the in-depth scoop. Suffice it to say I like this one and think it's worth a sniff.

I just... I don't know. It just feels like a standard fougère to me. I understand that it's literally in the name, but in this day and age this style feels overplayed in the mass designer category and thus falls short when in a signature collection / private line even when it is still nicely blended, like this one. A bit of a miss timing-wise, but definitely not bad.

Interesting fragrance with fougere elements. Fresh and herbaceous, vegetal, peppery sweetness, cool, airy, watery. The basil is especially dominant for me. Versatile for sure and inoffensive. On my skin the dry down is like a shaving cream scent.

Blue juice. Green fragrance. Smells pretty generic. You probably already have this scent. Moderate in all aspects. It's pretty MEH Note to Fragrantica ... Hate the new balloon ratings. No idea what they even mean anymore.

#557 in my "Tour de Fragrance" So far this "Signature Collection" is proving generally well done. Far better quality than we're used to from Dunhill which seemed to completely stop trying in the middle of the last decade. Certainly the "Signature Collection" on the whole is much better quality in terms of longevity and projection than the "Icon" line which they should be embarrassed to label EDP in potency. So far I've liked "Agar Wood", "Amalfi Citrus", "Arabian Desert", "British Leather", "Indian Sandalwood" and "Moroccan Amber." They are the first Dunhill scents I've encountered that are good enough quality to be worth owning. "Valensole Lavender" is indifferent and non-performing as is this mildly green and undistinguished "Nordic Fougere." I don't think either are worth owning. "Nordic Fougere" reminds me of Mont Blanc's "Starwalker" and "Individuel," which are watered-down, boring and pointless EDTs that they should just put out of their misery. I'll try out "Egyptian Smoke" from the "Signature" collection next, then finally "Mongolian Cashmere."

So it is a nice smooth fragrance no doubt but strangely on dry down I can’t help but notice a similarity to Versace pour Homme , this Dunhill doesn’t list amber but it sure smells so similar yet both start off very different I kinda prefer the Versace start to finish this Nordic Fougere I think has been desperately over hyped I guess we just want a modern Fougere so bad we go crazy before actually testing them out. It’s an ok scent decent at best

This is a really nice, smooth laundry scent. It gets better and better as it matures. Inoffensive and is unlike other clean fragrances I own. It has a synthetic opening, but it gets better. Glad I have this one!

Yep, a smoother Starwalker, but it can't beat the originals price tag.
