Ambre Gris

A salty amber composition with a touch of powder, a little incense and the most delicious, bittersweet dry-down. An enduring favourite that always lifts my mood and adapts to any given situation and time of day. Perfect for colder months, but easily translatable to warmer weather in its Mediterranean feel. An undeniable, but unobtrusive presence. It's "established" smelling, like a worldly older woman. Luxe but not gouache, with a complexity and longevity far beyond its deceptively low price point. Similar to Perris Monte Carlo's Ambre Gris, but with a feminine edge in the stronger rose note and slightly more powder. That said, an easily unisex fragrance. I have little idea how this fragrance relates to the scent of true ambregris, but I highly recommend if you're looking for an affordable and distinctive amber fragrance that far out-performs its price point. A quiet masterpiece by the brilliant Luca Maffei.

Another winner for me. I think even in synthetic form Ambergris is a note that must find its wearer, find the right chemistry to show full potential. As other reviewers have expressed polar opinions - try before buy, just don't blame the juice. After all we have this huge variety of fragrances in the world exactly to look for the Right One for us only. Here main players are labdanum with lemon and vanilla - they create an impression of "ambregris". To me it is more wearable than Ambre Gris of Balmain. Alyssa Ashley's Ambergris is very easy to pull off for both genders, it is powdery-sweet, comfortable, on a very relaxed side, nothing sickly was ever detected, as often too much synthetic powder can make you beg for some air. It will be complimented, I Am sure, majority of people tend to love scents like that from the strangers.

This perfume is a perfect match on my skin. It’s very warm and sexy, a bit powdery but definitely vanilla and Amber. On me it smells expensive and it lasts forever. If my sister tries this it’s so different, more citrus and less sophisticated. So this is one of those perfumes that can make you or break you, which I like because it makes it a lot more personal to wear. I am absolutely in love with this beauty and will continue to wear it a lot more

A nice muted spicy, powdery, amber concoction with rosy undertones. Luxury in a bottle for a great price. I am starting to really love my Alyssa Ashley (Houbigant) collection for their timeless elegance. It's not exactly like Essence de Patchouli, and not a direct replacement for it. I would say Ambre Gris is more of a quiet perfume with a spicy amber, rosy, vanilla sillage. Simply gorgeous!

This is another peppery bjuti, and, I don't know how it got under my radar.... again... cause I bought it some y ago now, nevermind, if y like pepper, y go for this, I also can smell the rose and amber, and as with me, proably my little bottle will be empty in a short time, and, it smells lovely lyered with my Reveal CK, another nais peppery scent :))

I really like Ambre Gris. I'm no expert at describing a scent, but it does seem very ambery to me, and it's gorgeous. There are some flowers, and a lovely vanilla tone, after the slightly peppery beginning. I love pink pepper in a perfume. I love this very much. It's a beautiful smooth and creamy amber perfume. Superb.

This is a delightful reminder that a sexy perfume does not have to trumpet your arrival.Surprisingly close to real, fabulous Ambergris, it lasts all day. The Rose & Sandalwood, combined with a beautiful Vanilla is more nuance than intrusion, I find it a very intimate scent.

Buttery soft amber, fuzzy musk, cozy vanilla, sweet rose. Dries down animalic with such well balanced spiciness. I adore it. Winter only, for me. Too dense for hot/humid weather.

If there was a colour to represent this perfume, to me it would be soft lilac. Sensual amber and good amount of powder, sweet enough, but not too sweet.

this perfume smells exactly how i imagined it to smell (that has never happened before) must be your reviews, so thank you. i am not sure i have ever smelt amber gris before (if indeed this does smell like amber gris? or not?)?! but this VERY familiar whiff immediately transported me to visiting Whitby as a child, for some reason! it is warm, with a sweetness, but not sweet. cosy...but there's this lovely edge to it, which gives it a slight animallic note. just beautiful and i can't believe it cost less than £20. the dry down is luscious too, as the amber (tempered with slight musty vanilla) lets through jasmine, with some rose. The heady note mentioned by Shwets. there is a big note in there that dominates the composition in the heart. but i can't conclude whether this is a note or actually the mix. and i am not fully familiar with labdanum. whatever the mix, it is blummin gorgeous and quite alluring. no, it doesn't smell at all like the Balmain Ambre Gris. but it does smell an awful lot like Alyssa Ashley Essence de Patchouli! which has a bit of patch going on in the base.

I bought this in a tax-free town up in the mountains because it's not sold where I live. It was very cheap, only Euro 13! There was a tester so I could smell before buying. I already trashed too many perfumes. I expected this to smell awful because I don't like AA's perfumes in general. They smell evry cheap and synthetical to my nose, almost annoying. Instead Ambre Gris is not so bad. I like it quite enough. It's your typical amber scent where "amber" is more of a concept blend rather than real stuff, of course. It's a good rendition of the raw aspect of amber, only delicately peppery in the opening, then it's all about amber given by labdanum, not sweet until it settles down. You need to like labdanum because it's a note that kills everything else in a perfume. After a few hours on my skin it becomes more mellow and vanillic. It reminds me especially of Esteban's ambers and perhaps L'Occitane. Both Yves Rocher and Balmain are much more cosy, warm and round than AA's Ambre Gris.

I bought a new, 100ml bottle of this gem for 8 dollars. The EDP and it's a perfectly charming, warm, easy-going, comfy fragrance for lounging. I can't say it smells interesting and expensive but it doesn't smell cheap in fact there are zero off notes. ZERO. Great work by the house. I even like the bottle and the atomizer is fine. I bet the SS. Annunziatas this nose did are divine. Update, Now I got a bargain bottle of the EDC and it's equally delightful as the EDP.

I like this classic amber quite enough. A little bit loud in the opening and very very classic style amber of grannies' memory. It smells French amber with a tad of powder / talcum, clean, cold, not far from elegance but a little abused as a scent. My skin does not have great sillage and longevity, I tried it in stratification with Red Rose Al Rehab, not bad ... I would not recycle it does not make me crazy

Powdery and a little spicy at the top, transforms into salty amber and smooth sandalwood. Low sillage, but surprisingly decent skin scent, get around 5 hrs on skin. Would work all year round, I think this is better with a bit of heat.

Incredible value... great cheapie. My bottle is "only" the EDC concentration and I get over 12 hrs longevity.

This was a huge disappointment, For a bit over 20pounds I could have had something much better. This smells really cheap and sweet. I love all the notes listed here but I could not stand this very chemical, synthetic fuzzy and heavy smell. And I love heavy smells but this was on the bad side of the spectrum. Waste of money. Definitely try before buying!

this perfume smells like it was from another era, like 1930s... I have no issue with vintage kind of smells (at least that is what I like to think owning a few powderbombs) but not this one. Maybe it is the dryness, maybe it is the soapiness. I'll give this one a pass.

This is not for me. The first 3 hours it's almost soap. Then it becomes a bit better and warm ambery and vanillic

The dissapointment of the century. Dries down like a burnt wood and plastic. I don't understand it. Smell dissappears in 5 minutes as well.

Another Alyssa Ashley piece in my collection - the eau parfumee cologne spray - and I must say it got me curious about the newer version. Citrus opening - funny, but reminiscent slightly of Calvin Klein`s Eternity! - which slowly dries down to a skin-close, half-sweet musky animalic amber and ends up in slightly sweet vanilla-labdanum. Not synthetic, which is a good thing! Not the best sillage, but it lasts on the skin long enough (not as long as the Essence de Patchouli though, which is an absolute bomb!) Speaking of which, you can clearly detect patchouli in this too, but all in all it`s a comfy, plain, inoffensive,uncomplicated musky amber and all this at a very reasonable price tag..Now, the truth is you`ll have to spray generously, so at first you might think it`s borderline room spray quality, but don`t let this ruin your the buzz. The scent itself is quite nice a surprise for me - it works well on my skin, not soapy, rather just musky, it`s almost reminiscent to cashmeran too at one point so works as a `wooly jumper scent` at the moment and I absolutely love it! What I really miss here is a bit of extra oomph for sillage. Alas, I have had pricier and less impressive amber perfumes than this, so I`m not complaining. I`ll use this as a starting point to other amber scents, I guess it`s surprisingly good for a starting point!

Warning: This is NOT an ambergris scent. Not even the slightest bit of ambergris note there, none. This is plain and pure old school amber (resins) scent, which is a fantasy note. The traditional amber note consists of vanilla, labdanum and that's what you find here as the skeleton, wrapped with the traditional overdose of powdery rose, bit of sandalwood (not the most-sought creamy mysore one, but the plain dusty west indian sandalwood) and powdery jasmine. I am shocked how some reviewers can go further to say this smells like ambergris :'D, must be the marketing trick of the name "Ambre Gris" taking its effect on some reviewers. AA Ambre Gris simply smells like many other traditional old-school amber (not ambergris!) scents out there, and reminds me of old women's scents right from the first spray. Definitely a try before buy type of frag, and to me 100% feminine.

I used to love to use Sunshine oils Ambergris in the early nineties. it's been long discontinued, and I haven't found a replacement. AA Ambre Gris comes close, with a citrus tang that lasts for quiet sometime. I do have Ambraliquidia, but it's more sweet and earthy. AA Ambre Gris has more animal "fuzziness". It's more complex. I'm reminded of a refined Chantilly (Houbigant/Dana). Chantilly is cheap and raunchy. Ambre Gris is raunchy in a more sophisticated way. I do see the old school perfume aspect of the scent, but that's not gonna stop me from enjoying it. For someone who wears mainly Middle Eastern perfumes, in public, in the Southern USA, scents like AA Ambre Gris is hardly a challenge. I think shaving foam like Barbisol, and colognes like The Baron, and Tabac smell more feminine than Amber Gris.

Bought after perusing the drugstore offers on a sweltering summer day, just to prolong the air-conditioned respite. Heat and sweat brought up a salty accord and I had to have it. On colder days it's powder from start to finish, but still lovely. And vintagey, like an iris aftermath of a pre-war fragrance. Great for those of us who cannot be bothered with top and middle notes and want to head straight to the dry down. It's more about texture than the scent, a very tactile perfume. Ingenious use of common aromachemicals and far too good for a drugstore. And yes, it's ambergris interpretation, whale vomit not the balsamic labdanum benzoin amber, hence the saltiness. Clever.

I do not like this one. I thought I would get that slightly salty, animalic musky scent mixed with the warm amber. But it’s too heavy on the vanilla and dries down to a mainstream amber accord which is so prominent in many fragrances and doesn’t sit well on my skin. I also tried it on my husband but it smells exactly the same on him as on me. The opening is a bit more masculine but the driedown for me is too tick and sweet. It does lasts forever so if you like this than a little goes a long way.

Citrus blast followed by smooth strong amber,sandalwood,labdanum hint of sensual floral jasmine this is lovely I've tried a few times now and it scores well for longevity too.I was reluctant to try this as I found the oud pour elle from alyssa overpowering but this even though it's strong is very smooth not cloying at all.Synthetic??probably but it does not smell cheaply made if you get a chance snap this up its impressive without an impressive price tag.A true oriental gem just what I love.

Ok this is a scent i'm not sure how to describe but will try to give you some idea. I was at Westfields Shepherds Bush yesterday and saw this at Beauty Base which sells high end fragrances including a limited range of Serge Leutens. Alyssa Ashley Ambre Gris smells very high end. I only tried on paper and skin but briefly. It seemed to last well and had an animallic musk scent but not overly so. The scent though not heavy had a heady note which i wasnt keen on. Definately worth trying.

I've never owned a perfume I couldn't smell, but I can't smell this. I owned the original Alyssa Ashley Ambergris which came out in the '80s. It was heavenly, although a touch soapy. All I can smell here is a faint rose and that is it. I was so hoping this would be similar to the original. Sadly, it is not. It doesn't smell bad. It doesn't smell at all. :(

Unisex. Versatile. An easy reach. Dusty & powdery... labdanum, high in musk, amber and pink Bulgarian rose. Similar drydown to the Ambraliquida by L'Erbolario. Once it melts into your skin, it becomes a sexy warm skin scent. Very Minx ;)

Very pleasing amber composition. Warm and smooth and sophisticated. Amber is the right at the forefront. No spice, no patchouli (hooray). Sweet and powdery, but not too much, very balanced. Delicious!

This is a perfect perfume. It's an embrace. It's both intoxicating and subtle. The citrus keeps it uplifting and the rest of the notes keep it gorgeous.
