The Library Collection Opus X

Had the immense pleasure and honour to try it today 02/03/16 in London's premier department/ luxury lifestyle store. It is quite a revelation: the bottle again as usual gives clues on the content that one should look at a 'perfectly layered cocktail' with the darker and heavier ingredients settling on the bottom and the more elusive, higher octane count parts atop, brimming and bursting with energy and zest. Okay, so the opening is a very cold, sharp and pungent 'green' almost screechy rose with a strong geranium undertone: just like when you break those leaves of the Lemon Geranium types, the ones people would breed and multiply by simple cuttings in cold frames and cold greenhouses in the olden but golden days. The whole era of this fragrance is like a time-warp, a catapult back into the perhaps Edwardian/ Victorian times, when roses and geraniums were all the rave: Very much a Manet/ Monet or any other impressionist's painting topic. The picture I actually have in mind, is the small front flower garden of my late grandmother, who planted roses, geraniums and nasturtiums amongst other plants and few veggies in her small patch in front of her house. I was often sent to fetch some chives or parsley for her to chop up and sprinkle over the salads. Every time I'd brush past the geraniums they'd release their essential oils from the leaves with this nostrils-piercing lemony scent. The flowering roses, basking in the summer heat of the zenith, would reveal their blushing, rosy, cheeky warm and flirtatious aromas that would soften the blow of the former tangy, tarty, green bitter nature....and this is exactly what is captured here: warm, sweet, opulent summer roses juxtaposed with these somewhat harsh yet wonderful geraniums. What further amplifies this hot/cold phenomenon is the somewhat chemical varnish note, that cuts through it like a sharp and rusty knife. Back to my granny's garden, she had the space framed with a rusty wrought-iron fence that was painted white and all the runner beans, marigolds and other bushy/ climbers would wrap or envelop around these fixtures. Upon me harvesting nature's treasures the metallic notes made themselves known as well. Later in the development there is also something yellow (the ylang-ylan) -I am seeing my granny's marigolds endlessly shining into my face- and the dry down is a lovely softer ambery, leather-oud 'outro': A wonderful twist in the end that is completely unexpected after the long fanfare of the roses (3 different types really amplify the rose theme to the max). In terms of season, I would definitely position this into late spring and early to mid summer. In terms of competition I am thinking mixing together Frederic Malle's "Une Rose" with "Geranium Pour Monsieur" (of the same house) could perhaps achieve similar results, but you would have to buy two products, so it would likely be more expensive. All in all a great summer rose fragrance in an already rose-themed saturated market. Given that Amouage had already launched "Lyric" a few years back which is not miles away as a "cold green rose", it is somewhat strange that the house has opted for yet another rose themed product to finish the OPUS range (am I right that this is the last offering for the Opus range?). However, it must be said, this is truly olfactory art and yet another masterpiece for 'natural meets abstract perfumery'. AMOUAGE, if you were a man or a woman, (or anything in between), I would want to marry you, just because you smell so irresistibly good. 10/10 Masterpiece of an 'old-fashioned' Rose Garden by the farm house captured like a Monet Painting. In fact it could be called "Rosegarden by the Farmhouse".

I was dreaming of an unusual rose, that hasn’t been done yet, or at least one I haven’t owned. I collect rose based scents . My sister had recently purchased Highness Rose from Montale ... in the past, I had had it. It’s a beautiful soliflore without much else going on, and while I love it, I can only take so much of it. Then for a while I considered Amuage Lyric. Everybody seems to love it. I even sampled it. It was gorgeous, still on my wish list , but very mature, elegant , warm, pretentious . and my third choice was the Opus X, which was going to be a blind buy since I couldn’t find a sample anywhere. For months I thought about it, fantasized about it. Too much money to risk on a blind buy, But I loved the movie, the notes intrigued me . Still, in the back of my mind, the metallic notes scared me , and the oud in the base made me think it will just be another variation of rose-oud Montale style. Finally, I succombed to my attraction. Ordered it unsniffed . My early Christmas gift. What a surprise ! The packaging it beautiful. . The bottle is giant, and very awkward to hold and to spray. It does however have a golden base so you can display your bottle if you wish. The scent is a stunner. There is something raw and addictive here. I put just a tiny spray, thinking if I don’t like it I shouldn’t spray much so I could swap it. I couldn’t remove my nose off my hand . I sprayed again. For minutes I inhaled deeply , The most beautiful dark red rose was there in the beginning. Voluptuous, full bodied, But with leaves and thrones too ! Rough and majestic. I sprayed again, not that the two puffs were not enough , but it is addictive. The rose started to give in to a freshly cut lumber note. What is this ? Could this be varnish ? Of just the wet wood being carved ? Then another turn, and my hand started smelling like cinnamon bark. Not like the ground one you put in pies , but raw and unprocessed ...and here came the strange blood resembling note... a strange one indeed, mainly because it smells like fresh blood, when you just got a cut by accident, rather than stale blood on a napkin ( which is much more metallic and pungent ). And then the roses came back , with the ever so slight oud, just a tiny trace that keeps the lumber from taking over. At no point I sensed any amber. The drydown is the smoothest, purest insense. Sensual and creamy, not too smoky, exotic. Overall, it feels like a cold and mysterious rose. There is no playfulness here. It’s a serious piece of art that not everyone will appreciate. I can see this being a misunderstood beauty, a lone wolf in the army of beautiful rose scents, a general keeping the distance from all those beneath . Longevity is good, the silage is moderate but noticeable. The scent, in my opinion, unisex. But I am a woman and I am totally smitten with it, It isn’t as feminine and opulent as Lyric , but it. Is unique and for sure I don’t think there exists any other perfume to resemble it. It’s not sweet or sexy, but sober and elegant. Despite adoring it , I don’t recommend doing what I did and blindly ordering, as it is extremely unusual and might not be your piece of cake. My opinion is that this is one of the most incredible rose scents every created, and , like a rare wine, will be owned and cherished only by connoisseurs . I feel privileged to have it .

Christopher Chong loves classical music. You don’t have to talk to him to know this; the Library Collection provides ample evidence. With Opus X it’s right on the box, depicted by a violin - the violin, the red Mendelssohn Stradivarius. Chong and Negrin outsourced the composition of this perfume to the superbly talented Annick Menardo, and chose rose to star. Where to begin.... I’m not going to say much because this perfume wants to defy any description. It’s hard to do. Opus X opens with rose. A massive amount of it, and completely synthetic it seems. The rose smells incredibly metallic, like blood or iron. Like iron, it has a dull glint when the light hits it just right. This is far from being your standard rose. Lurking in the depths is castoreum and Laotian oud, that with time and heat turn the rose dark and depressive by giving it a tanned leather and deep woody bend in direction. Toss in some ambrarome and geranium for a gray metallic animalic musk strikingly similar to ambergris and green mentholated accents. These materials together create what Amouage tags as a varnish accord. They’re right. It smells metallic, it smells chemically and synthetic, it smells like it’s ready to ignite or combust at any given moment. It smells like you shouldn’t be wearing it. The glossy and impenetrable red sheen of the Mendelssohn violin is very well captured here, as is the violin’s tragic history not the least of which was being stolen during WWII; this instrument capable of exquisite beauty, i.e. a rose, has been molested, disrespected, and pulled into some dark pit by evil forces never to be seen or heard again. Massive rose perfumes usually come at us with richness, elegance, regality and class, and tenderly pulls at our heart strings, befitting the greatest of flowers. Opus X doesn’t. This is one of the most unsettling, disquieting, and disturbing perfumes I have ever worn. It’s also brilliant. In addition to his love of classical music, one other thing is known about Christopher Chong of which there is ample evidence: he is very willing to be bold, to push perfume as an art form, and to push the wearer’s sensibilities and limits. Listen to the eerie tones of the Mendelssohn Stradivarius if you dare.

I was able to find a sample of it off of Scent Split and knew I had to have it. I was fearful I would have to cast my net to eBay, wrought with really expensive prices, to get it, but as luck would have it, a local collector was selling an unopened box. So, I had to snatch it right up before it slips through my fingers. It’s not a scent for everybody, but I don’t think it’s as polarizing as people say it is. It definitely struck a cord with me but it’s because of the nostalgia behind it. There’s a memory to it that I don’t think most people nowadays would have, hence it smells so foreign...so vile, but to me, it reminds me of really old churches. Growing up in the Philippines, I don’t know why but we did go to a couple of old churches on vacations or during long family road trips. It’s usually during the late afternoons, where the sun was glaring but the winds were strong. The churches lay empty and I can smell the varnish of really old pews, of wood carvings of the Virgin Mary polished with parishioner’s scented oils and rags. The mix of the strong winds, the hot sun, the wood and concrete start to smell. It’s dusty and old, but you can’t say it’s dirty. It’s the memory of the woody incense build up onto the walls, it’s the history of multiple restorations here and there. It reminds me of old prayer beads in a pious lady’s hands whose been to the same church for decades, the wood having absorbed the scent off of her lotion, her perfume, her...everything, I guess. The rose feels so potent here, whether or not it’s the best quality, I can’t say, but it’s unmistakably a rose that’s seeped into the wood, that fights through the shiny lacquer of really old and loved wood. Together, it’s almost a little bloody, maybe a little...aseptic, if not industrial. I genuinely love this. I’ve actually worn this to church hahahahah, for myself, really. Nowadays, I go to chapels in malls...in far cleaner and newer areas, but the fond memories of a childhood I may not have cherished as much as I should have in the moment persist so...achingly beautiful.

This is a masterpiece. With thousands of rose fragrances out there, it’s hard to make one that truly stands out. This isn’t for everyone, though. Others might just think it’s a good rose and not worth the price — like, why not just buy five other rose fragrances instead? For me, it hit instantly — pure nostalgia. Old wardrobes filled with vestments. Worn wooden furniture, varnish peeling away. Funeral wreaths. Dried flowers, long past their bloom. Cold metal — copper and brass, slightly corroded. Old books, heavy tomes. A faint, unsettling sharpness — like old tools, old ink, something chemical lingering in the dark. And reigning over all of it is the rose. A majestic rose, full and velvety, almost too alive for its surroundings. But it’s not romantic. It’s trapped. Encased in metal, surrounded by that strange varnish-like haze that makes it feel preserved — unnaturally — like something kept rather than worn. A bright, juicy burst of luscious rose and geranium, minty, metallic and subtly sweet. The opening also has tinges of a dry woody incense accord that reminds me of aged church pews, but this image is fleeting and only lasts a few moments. What makes the scent ring clear as a bell is the 'varnish' note which lends a solvent, vaguely fruity acetone feel, hovering somewhere between peach and sellotape, with the slightest hint of anisic sweetness, almost boozy. It's quite intoxicating, perhaps a bit too glaring if over sprayed. What delighted me more a few hours later, was a velvety, chocolatey warmth that I guessed might be patchouli (not listed). In fact, the dry down on skin turned quite gourmand to my nose, similar to that of "1969" by Histoires des Parfums, which also has a fruity plastic vibe alongside its prominent chocolate+rose note. This stuff has monster projection. After spraying myself, I visited a coffee shop and a couple came in and asked the shop assistant where the beautiful rosy-vanilla smell was coming from; they wanted to know if they could have that in a tea. It must have been the "Opus X". My wallet that held the tester strip in my pocket still smells of sweet rose wine, even 9 hours later. I can see the red violin concept in "Opus X", particularly in the opening few bars of churchy oud. For the briefest of moments I imagine resting my nose against an old lacquered violin and inhaling the history through the worn wood, but mostly it's that intense geraniol and sellotape combination which dominates. It won't be for everybody, but no doubt a very distinctive rose for people who want to stand out.

A bit of a long story but I went to the store to try something from MFK when the sales lady informed me that it was my lucky day and the Amouage rep had just dropped off the tester for Opus X earlier today. I've been in the mood for roses recently and this was on my test list. I wasn't too impressed when I first sprayed this on. It seemed too bright and I prefer my roses to be moody and complex. Like me :) However within 15 minutes of exiting the store, I was paying more attention to Opus X sprayed on my right forearm as opposed to the MFK sprayed on my left. The two scents aren't even in the same genre so it's not fair to compare them but as much as I adore and worship MFK, the scent paled next to Opus X. Have you ever heard Bryan Ferry croon "I'm in the mood for love" and just swoon? Well my friend and I enthusiastically agreed that this is one sexy scent that sends tingles and goosebumps all over. She said it reminded her of being in Japanese temples with their distinct woody incense permeating the serene atmosphere (not quite sure how this is sexy but to her it is) whereas Opus X bowled me over with roses galore, dark fleshy voluptuous roses like Angelina Jolie's bee stung lips. Mylancome was right, this is a rose bomb and the projection is Amouage-massive otherwise. Where Opus IX was a tribute to animlic jasmine, Opus X is a flowery ode to lusty roses. There's definitely much more to Opus X than what I'm going on about but I was too distracted today other than noting how amazing I smelt(at least my right arm that is) but I'll revise my review once I get my hands on a bottle. Rose lovers, must try!

Not enough varnish. If that varnish note is what's putting you off from trying this very rosy scent, don't worry. The varnish note was apparently brought in to attract all us people who either love strong rosy scents which can lacerate our nasal passages or need to justify buying yet another rose scent, even a decant. rosequeen is that latter sort of person, the one needing to justify buying even a decant. I like this scent well enough, but it just isn't as edgy as so many of the reviewers here say it is. I wanted the varnish note; I mean why wouldn't I want to imagine I was also playing a violin for 6+ hours while I wore this? What other scent maker implies imagining this is a possibility? I know varnish, at least fresh varnish from 60 years ago, but unless they're making varnish which smells a lot weaker now (hey, nearly everything else has changed in the last 60 years; why not that), there isn't enough varnish in Opus X to mention. It's a good rosy scent though, with plenty of geranium and some leather, but even 6 hours later I didn't find as much oud as I expected from the prior comments. It isn't sweet or gooey though, but not as heavy as the notes would suggest. It's good though, and not the same tea rose, rose & oud, or heavy "gardens of Babylon rose" scents we're all used to and like most of the time but think we might need an occasional break from. Full retail is a bit steep though, and I probably won't be going there.

My first impression echoes that of a lot of people below: this is the scent of Dracula's coffin. It's dark, seductive, but with something off-putting and disturbing about it at the same time. This is rosy varnish with a metallic edge, gothic and giving off vibes of Dracula's bloodlust and coffin. The presentation is excellent as is typical for Amouage. While many people don't care about the box, there's no denying this is packaged in a beautiful box with striking art representing the Stradivarius violin which is the inspiration for the fragrance. The color gradient of the bottle makes it look like blood is draining out slowly from the bottle, yet another connection to Dracula... 🧛🩸 Excellent blind buy for me, and I'm looking forward to future wears to really dig into this. Update (21 Nov 2021): Still gives me those Dracula's coffin vibes. ⚰️🥀 This is probably a love it or hate it perfume for most. I love it as a piece of art, but I have to be in the right mood to wear it. I find that Figment Man, which is another polarizing Amouage fragrance, is easier for me to spritz on mindlessly than Opus X. This is a STRONG perfume, which probably adds to how polarizing it can be. Not a safe blind buy unless you have extremely broad tastes and are interested in sniffing every fragrance under the sun.

This is my first ever Amouage perfume and I blindly bought it. I like rose fragrances but they are usually far too sweet for me for daily use. So I read all reviews here and I decided to get it. I'd say it is the most successful blind buy I ever done! This is absolutely amazing rose fragrance, not sweet at all, it reminds of the Bulgarian rose, used for oil extraction, but with some metallic notes, some oud and geranium on later stages. It is absolutely amazing, best rose fragrance I have ever had - it is balanced, all year around fragrance for me. Instant love! Edit: After about 7h the rose is fading, there is more geranium, less oud and metalic. It is fantastic! Edit 2: After 10h the rose is back! I no longer smell it on my skin but it could be because I sprayed it on my chest and the scent is still as strong as when I sprayed it. Edit 3 (final): after about 48 there is only rose left. It is a natural rose scent, not sweet, not metalic, no geranium, no oud, just rose - as you would smell it from a rose bush. It is unique and beautifully composed, powerful and complex. It is bold and you need to be brave to wear it. It is for confident people or if you are not confident enough, it will give you what you need to leave that impression. Beautiful, beautiful scent!

Opus X is a rose-centred olfactory artwork. Made deliberately synthetic by the use of metallic, mineral notes and the chemical varnish accord, it is an avant-garde experience, but not is not something I would typically wear, despite my admiration for this scent. OX opens with dewy tea rose, fresh and rosewater-like, but becoming increasingly rich and jammy. I get a strong geranium note, herbal and peppery, but more essential oil-like than herbal. The metallic, chemical notes creep in early on, creating an interesting, slightly blood-like accord with the rose-geranium. There is a synthetic amber molecule in the base, Cetalox-like and grey, enhancing the metallic accord. It really works, despite my not being a fan of some such amber-esque molecules. The metallic-rose accord that dominates this scent remains until final fade, unapologetic, provocative and arty. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. I really like this scent in spite of myself - there is much to appreciate here, and I love the artistry. A chemical rose, carved out of iron. 4.5/5.

This is really nice! Don't hesitate to try this scent if you love strong florals especially geranium. This is NOT a rose based scent. Try it by yourself and you'll see. Totally unisex. The opening which lasts just a few minutes, there's a blast of metallic florals with pronounced metallic taste. Then the metallic notes calm and blend perfectly with geranium. Think about it. The metallic notes simply support the geranium making it the Dominant note. Absolutely beautiful, nothing synthetic at all. As time passes it becomes even better. Now there's a nuclear green geranium with some tiny roses at the background. The roses are light and smooth. Very good performance overall. Suitable for year round use except very warm weather because it's really strong scent. If you love green geranium, give it a try. If you love roses, don't bother with it because it's not a rose scent. This is my first test. Definitely I'll try it again. Another masterpiece from Amouage.

It’s definitely a unique scent not like any other I have tried. You will either love it or hate it. This is the only fragrance that my fiancée complimented on me. It does smell like rust a bit and stays on my skin for two days without reapplying. Edit: wore this today (heat wave in nj right now), for the first time in a while and it opened up : the top notes take a few hours to dissipate and then the dry down is so soft and gentle, as if you have to go through thorns before you get to smell the flower. It’s so amazing. It doesn’t make you feel like a million dollars or femme fatale, but makes you feel unique and mysterious. P.s. update, after COVID my ability to smell the varnish and rust in this fragrance left me and now only smell a very beautiful fresh young rose

I totally disagree with Myra saying this is the worst creation by Mr Chong.has has been known to do much worse... But smells are personal choise so I leave it there. I find this perfume very charming and interesting. At first strong punch of sweet spiciness may seem of putting and not very promising but it actually delivers where so many other more generic perfumes disappointed. It's actually Rose,full of it. I grow many old-fashioned roses for their scent and l can say this is a real thing. Love the warmth of spice,like strong carnation. It's magic,I definitely want one

To be honest, I didn't understand this perfume at all. I got this sharp, metallic note with rose, but that's about it. When I saw the box that the bottle comes in, the pieces started to come together. The box looks like an oil painting - so for me, this scent is what the rose would smell like if you had taken it from a painter. Or some sort of idealistic garden, with a rusty watering can. The varnish accord, geranium and metallic notes enhances the green from the roses. They're more garden-fresh than dusty or fruity. I'm glad I have a bottle.

My first impression: I'm not sure why this fragrance is considered challenging or polarising. To me this really just smells like the roses my mom grows in southern France, after a light rain shower. The metallic/veneer note doesn't read as such to me somehow -- I smell it because I know it's there, but if I didn't, I think I would process it as just another element of the rosiness of the fragrance. I dunno, maybe it smells vaguely like a metal watering can, but not in a remotely industrial or hard core kind of way. It's really beautiful.

Wow This was at the height of amouages power and creativity I’ve smelled a lot of rose fragrances but this one is unique and in a good way I enjoyed wearing it and it had a certain feel to it maybe of freshness and coolness People who are not versed in the rose medium shouldn’t even consider trying it A work of art that deserves more recognition than other “niche” categorized scents that in truth are uninspired Performance was great projection was ok If you are not willing to be open minded about rose variations just stay away

Anne Bronte once said: 'But he who dares not grasp the thorn Should never crave the rose" Opus X is clutching the rose and the thorn with equal pleasure. Opus X is a couture rose idea Love,(may rose) tragedy (blood rose) and death (ambarome/labdanum) This is an artistic, dramatic rose something I would expect to come out of a Lutens hat, but its Amouage as the big twist. Rose aficionados this is a must try. It doesnt smell like anything else, a bit of the old and the experimental...and thats what makes this great in my book.

Amouage Opus X (A11623A123, USD 150 for 100 ml., May 2016) Even the story always mentions about the movie "Red Violin" This just reminded me of The Pianist (2002) by Roman Polanski Rose representing Hope & Faith. While All the Lacquer is the Paino he trusts. The Metallic represents the ruins. He keeps going with hope & Faith. Even when Ruins is surrounding him; he trusts. "Strength is from within; with your hope, trust and faith" Even dry down, remind me of scent of new piano. How can that be? UNSCOREABLE; too beautiful.

This is currently the fragrance I am craziest for. This is amazingly beautiful. The smell of varnish and rose is beautiful. I can understand how this will divide people. I am in the group that will sing it's praise. The complexity and depth of the rose is what impresses me particularly. There is a debate to whether it smells natural or synthetic. This scent makes me feel special when I wear it. I feel all the more special knowing it takes another special person to fully appreciate this masterpiece.

As strange as it smells, I actually find it quite pleasant! Almost a masterpiece even (I've never smelled anything like it)! It's an very unrealistic rose, so I wouldn't even call it rose centric.. Yes it smells like varnish, but much better than any real ones! (my violin does not smell this lovely) It's all about the fantasy here, and the gorgeous bottle & box definitely helps

I still love this one. Despite the reviews, this is the only perfume I constantly get complements for! It is light enough to wear in the summer and heavy enough for the winter. Not sweet and yet flowery. The longevity is days, basically until I wash the clothes, which justifies the price. I recently tried other Amouage perfumes and this one is still my favorite!

Opus X has got me covered regarding niche fragrance. This is as far as I can step into the niche territory. Overall, the scent is unusual, out of this world. I absolutely adore the truly red roses, accompanied by the metallic notes. Varnish prevents it from being too sweet, old fashioned, overdressed. It is a modern take on a rose. Definitely worth a try!

Smells like red wine and deep red roses. The thorns have pricked your fingers and you are bleeding down your arm. It is unique and dark and earthy, though it is sickeningly sweet. I’d get it in a heartbeat if the sweetness didn’t bother me. I’m kind of into the metallic element. I just wish that sweetness were cut back by half. Then, it would be perfect.

I have more than 300 perfumes in my collection but all i can say this one really is rare. Not liking it much but really it stands out from the others. Gradually i happened to like it. Be strange and different. This is how i guess, a niche should be. Only the brave will wear this. Im brave enough now hehee..

9/10. Like the milk from the stems of dandelions mixed with a pleasant and gentle soapiness. For me this is the crowning jewel of the Opus collection. It is unique and enjoyable throughout the day. Unfortunately my husband does not find it attractive.

Amouage perfume always is uniq and elegant. This one is different than the previous perfume of opus line. Long lasting and become more class when it cool down and it's Better to use it in winter. I got many of compliments from my friends. 10/10

Opens with rose, but the geranium makes an appearance and there is a metallic tinge to it which I personally love and ends up in this warm embracing and yet metallic geranium rose mix that smells beautiful on me.

I was so curious about this scent but something made me hesitate and I didn't blind buy it like I used to do when adding Amouages into my collection. This is quite different from the overall style of Amouage but I have to admit that I haven't tried so many from an old Opus Collection, I do have around 40 Amouages though . This is one of the most realistic rose perfumes which I have tried. It's beautiful and fresh but to my nose it's almost like a solifore. There is a light noticeable metallic undertone and for some people "Varnish" effect can be too much but I was thinking that it would be clearly noticeable. I thought that in this scent that note would make this perfume strange (in a positive way) and utterly unique experience but it didn't. It's hidden on my skin like is the leather and I'm thinking now how a leather note performs in Amouage's perfumes. Even Oud is only in far away background and it doesn't bring any animalic vibe here. I was thinking that this is challenging as well but it's not. For me this was a disappointment, unfortunately. I don't have yet Opus XII - Rose Incense | Amouage which I love a lot and this didn't took it's place as a best Amouage's rose scent. Ingredients here are high quality, it's not synthetic to my nose but for me it lacks creativity and complexity, it's not an artistic masterpiece which I was waiting to have. It's very pleasant though and it quickly settles down into a smooth and velvety texture with a gentle creaminess from Ylang-Ylang. I love natural aroma of roses and I have some. If you like this Opus X perfume I recommend to try these ones as well, at least these ones are not discontinued. They are not totally same of course but they all have that distinctive natural aroma of roses which is much better than in this scent. Honestly, I love them all more than this one. But all of these are even more realistic Rose than Opus X. This is perfumery as abstract art. I believe the rose here is a heavy dosing of geraniol. It is strong and pungent. A few sprays will fill the whole room. A few minutes in, the varnish starts to develop. For me, it is reminiscent of my old cello. A unique smell for a fragrance for sure. It boils down to a basic question. Would I wear this? No. It's not a scent I enjoy to the extent of wanting to wear it, and I would consider myself open to wearing mostly anything. Fortunately, I got a decant instead of jumping into a full bottle. If I had, it would be relegated as a curio on my rose fragrance shelf. The bottle and packaging are beautiful. I also appreciate them paying homage to an interesting historic artifact. I respect this company for going outside the norm. I'll pass on this one though. Despite being a rose lover, it's just not quite for me. For those who like exploring scents, a decant wouldn't be remiss

It has been sitting in my wardrobe for a while before i have the courage to try this, as smelling straight from the bottle almost make me vomit. If you sniff directly from the bottle, you will only get strong metallic smell, as if you walk past a metalsmith cutting iron. But once you spray onto your skin, that metallic smell is blended nicely with rose, and a faith varnish account in the far background. The rose here is more like rose that has been left in water for very long, its no longer fresh and very withered. Dont get any blood feeling at all. I must admit its actually really nice, an incredible take on rose, and much much much wearable than reviews here make it (cant stress this enough). Very nice and very different from your usual rose.

Opens with a strong rose that quickly transmogrifies into a "Frankenstein rose" of sharp metal, wood, and varnish. Smells opulently artificial and weird. This is a fragrance that objectifies the wearer: quite literally - you will feel like an object whilst wearing it. Rather like a polished piece of expensive furniture. Later on in the dry down, the rosiness goes ambery, in the direction of Opus VI. Not a lot of warmth or humanity in this beast. Actually the person that comes to mind when I smell this is an extremely wealthy, very cruel, heartless woman in a position of power: the perfume she would wear whilst stepping all over others - in the sharpest, most deadly stilettos. Red-varnished ones, of course.

When you go niche and pick Amouage, you want to discover really original, unique scents and this one is truly something like this. Opus X is VERY rosy and has a metallic, synthetic undertone that makes it really different. You can feel the superior quality of the rose used in here even if the varnish accord gives it an unusual metallic sharpness that could potentially turn the scent into something that smells synthetic. This is absolutely not the case with Opus X - it smells creative, authentic and very unique - a great feminine perfume with a classy, elegant vibe. Performance is very good.

A surreal post modernist floral, this is a gorgeous offering from Amouage. It opens with a blast of rose and moves to heart which has more rose, geranium, slight leather and a distinct varnish accord. As it begins to dry, one detects metallic notes, oud, ylang-ylang and synthetic amber. Absolutely not for everyone. The perfume reminds you of a futuristic floral garden where beautiful synthetic plants grow. Unisex feminine leaning perfume with strong sillage and projection and very good longevity. Strong try before you buy. Enjoy!

Opus X is a stunning rose fragrance! The initial blast of roses is divine, but what really sets it apart is the metallic accord. It adds this intriguing edge that keeps things interesting. The oud and amber in the base are beautifully blended, creating a warm and sensual drydown. Definitely a unique and memorable scent.

to me this is just a green take on rose, accentuated by the geranium...think it is nice and has its own charm although it is definitely not a crowd pleaser. Lot of personality though. :)

very rose-smelling indeed, but it's too strong, doesn't have anything that would soften this strength that gives me headache immidiately

I’m repelled by the initial carnal blood note which lasts for the first 30 minutes - BUT then I’m attracted by the Turkish delight rose beauty which unveils thereafter. It becomes a mysterious herbal and hazy rose. If you’re looking for an unusually niche unisex, then this is definitely a fragrance worth exploring. As my preference goes from ‘hate’ then ‘like’, then that’s probably only an ‘ok’.

Amouage is becoming a hard sell for me. I tested this one out because "metallic" is a note I have not tried yet and I love rose. When they put a note down, they aren't lying... Smelled like someone slammed my face into a bed of rose petals and metal shavings. On first smell, though, it just smells like a christmas wreath or potpourri.

Amouage Opus X brings me some memories, but I can’t realize what it is. It is discontinued but I wouldn’t recommend buying it blind anyway. If you romanticize a metal rose like I did, probably, what you smell gonna be different from your expectations.

Churchy. Old ,wooden benches with fresh coat of varnish ,wreaths ,old metallic hinges ,dust ,spider webs ... I will cherish my sample dearly ,but to me it's unwearable masterpiece.

Everybody is talking about roses here... But I have completely different sensation of this fragrance. I tested it several times, and was surprised with rather specific smell, not as beautiful and bright as the bottle and the box. Finally today I said to myself: eureka! It smells exactly as an old geranium plant at my aunt's house, always standing in a guest bedroom and disturbing me a lot with it's obtrusive aroma... I was not surprised then to find geranium among the ingredients listed above for this fragrance. I just don't hear anything else and I truly wonder if someone is going to pay a fortune to smell like a houseplant in an old lady's house.

This perfume is one of the worst perfumes I've ever smelled. It's really loud and screechy an industrial metallic mess. There is a blood accord in this fragrance that is very specific to my nose it's the blood on the piece of gauze that you put in your mouth after a tooth extraction so it's saliva and blood mixed together add to it a horrible brunt sugar note sorry to paint that disturbing image but that's what I get. This perfume turns my stomach from start to finish. One good thing about it though is that it has an outstanding performance in both projection and longevity as you would've expect for an Amouage fragrance.
