The Library Collection Opus XI

I am going to keep this simple and silly because I for one cannot pick out the notes in this. I usually can but some compositions beg to be smelled as a whole and we waste so much time in the finer details. I am not an oud connoisseur and the only ouds I have smelled are the rose/oud combos which I don't care for. The oud comes across as curated (and cured) leather to me and there is an almost antiseptic quality to the composition only you don't get the burning sensation that your brain makes you think you will get through smelling it. Obviously there is much more going on in there which lends that 'antiseptic' quality. I can only assume it is the Leatherwood (Tasmanian shrub, not a made up note) and Marjoram (herb) that may be responsible for this but sadly I am not familiar with either... The styrax lends that smoky hint and I am sure there is a hint of patchouli in here somewhere as I smell it in the base. I also smell some very faint floral note in here but I don't know what it is. I blind bought a bottle about two weeks ago and thought I had made a very expensive mistake but it's all in the perseverance. This does not come off clothes and I haven't washed the clothes yet to see if it would come off at all. I feel strangely drawn to it and wanted to wear something else but wanted to wear this too. I sprayed it under my arms at around 7pm. It is now 4:30 pm the day after (I am not working today hehe) and I can still smell it as if I have just sprayed it. I think it is one to be worn in the nights and the colder darker days are more suited with the overall feel of the fragrance. I am assuming this was created by one of the two Maestros: Pierre Negrin or Alberto Morillas. I think it is Negrin as there is an intimidating vibe going on here which commands that the wearer is to be respected (and obeyed haha)! The bottle colour is very apt and it amazes me how Christopher Chong interprets these colours through smell alone. All in all an exceptional composition (the word fragrance feels too casual in the context of Opus XI) that I fear a lot of people may not like... I like it a lot and have been wearing it almost everyday alongside with other stuff because of some strange kind of fear of missing out on it.

When I first sprayed Opus XI to skin, I swore out loud. There are two reasons why I would release a slurry of expletives when smelling a perfume, either because it stinks to high hell or because I feel the need to brace for impact. Before I get into my reaction, the accords according to Amouage are marjoram at the top, oud in the middle, and styrax/leather at the base. Supposedly the focus is on oud. I don't know about that. When creating this perfume Christopher Chong emphasized the desire for a fully synthetic perfume inspired by Chong's take on fake-news. News that is fake and spreads faster than sunlight is certainly emulated by the materials and their technical handling. But, the oud material is completely synthetic and "unfinished" - it's missing other critical materials to present to us "oud" as we would (mostly) naturally encounter it. Fake (news), yes; convincing enough to be news, no. Oud it is not, and not really convincing as a fake oud either. What is more convincing would be a focus on the leather aspect; it's acidic and chemically, like the tanning of leather, with a deep, dark animalic backdrop. The marjoram is a very interesting touch, if a very, very heavy handed one. The overload of marjoram pushes the opening into the realm of gasoline, calling to mind more violet leaf than culinary herbs, and lasts for quite a long time, nearly two hours. It smells like someone spilled fuel all over a freshly tanned leather jacket. Now, back to the "why" of my reaction. This perfume doesn't have energy, it has a nuclear volatility, a warfare explosivity. It is loud, it is powerful, it is bold and daring and dangerous feeling. It pulls no punches and gives no quarter. Yet, olfactorily, it is very wearable; I'm not struggling with the accords at all, despite their overtly synthetic and "unfinished" nature. And, despite the power, danger, and volatility, it is smooth - the materials are great - and it is very well composed. It does not go for shock and awe at the expense of technical execution, which is absolutely masterful. An avant garde leather oud that makes a statement easily understood. I love this perfume, very much.

Let me put my mark in the sand and say...”Toot...toot! HYpe train starts here!!!” If I cared about being one of the first to declare that shit!!! In fact I actively don’t want people to like it therefore making it more exclusive and just for those in the know, and being part of the Opus line that’s where I suspect it will remain, in relative semi obscurity. I could be wrong though, because it’s so excellent it deserves high praise. Opus XI Opens up with a wet flint/stone almost dewy sensation of lush greens but you can instantly tell that is the calm before the storm and there is an awesome, dense base lurking underneath. Already it’s sharp and cutting yet somehow smooth and meditative. Basically the combination of a huge styrax note which is INCREDIBLE serves as a The darker more enchanted side of resins, which can usually run the gamete between cerebral or uplifting incense or leathery and sharp or dry amber to warm cuddliness. Styrax and oud In Opus XI are the perfect marriage for each other creating a highly medicinal and cutting fragrance but one which has a ton of depth even with the relative simplicity. I absolutely loved this stuff! Bold and in your face but balanced and refined too the best way to describe its vibes if you’re not familiar with this sort medicinal/resinous/oud smell is that of Gucci guilty absolute pour homme. Not just the almost antiseptic feel (Opus is way smoother and better BTW) but a natural sense, true resinous power delivered in a unique package. There’s something raw yet refined about it and it lasts and develops for many hours. I’ve always been a fan of the Opus series, they are kinda deliberately overlooked and more obscure than the main (his/hers) releases. The first six books if you like, were nice enough but the additional volumes have just got better and better, I remember describing Opus VII as like something Al Pacino would wear in that movie ‘Devils advocate’ (although I may have stolen that from someone who said it about a different fragrance & will still not be credited

Opus XI is the last of the original Library Collection for me to test. Another excellent addition to an outstanding line from one of my favourite houses, OXI is an elegant, masculine scent with muted, woody oud as the focal point. It is aromatic and herbal with an animalic but not pungent amber base. It is an unusual yet wearable take on oud, made with the high-quality ingredients typical of Amouage. OXI opens with an aromatic herbal accord thanks to the marjoram on a dry, woody base. There is a camphorous effect here, alongside soft spices, which gives this a clean, slightly synthetic quality. It is pleasantly aromatic overall. The oud note develops, dry and woody but increasingly leathery as it progresses. It is like soft, worn suede. It becomes balsamic as the amber base develops, enhancing the animalic side of the oud note. There is a hay-like note evident in the late stages too. It remains dry and aromatic, becoming slightly musky as it fades, lingering for a long time without wearing thin. It is best worn in cold weather. Sillage is strong and longevity is long-lasting. Simple but nicely composed, OXI is a sophisticated yet undemanding high-quality masculine scent. Unassuming, nicely-composed with points of interest, this is a lovely addition to a great collection. 4/5.

I agree with the below reviewer. There are many things in here. Given that there is no oud in this perfume (at least it certainly doesn't smell like it), and that this is therefore an oud accord, that one note will in fact be a combination of many woods, woody ambers, possibly patchouli, possibly cypriol, who knows, and I definitely agree that there's sandelwood too. If the brand insists there's oud, they must be doing a Guerlain, putting homeopathic amounts in so they can say it's there. It's not an oud perfume, it's a scratchy woody-amber perfume. It's not bad, but it's probably the least wearable of this collection I've come across (although I haven't smelled them all). It's a scratchy, screechy aroma-chemical soup, and certainly seems like an acquired taste to my nose. "I shouldn't say this but it's kind of a fake oud" - Pierre Negrin interview on Amouage's YouTube channel Update: 99% identical to Gucci Guilty Absolute, and 100% identical in the drydown.

When I wear Opus xi it doesn't matter whether I'm going to a formal event or just walking the streets to get some exercise, the aura I sense is one of gravitas. This fragrance presents complex oud notes that are modified in the opening phase with marjoram and in the mid to final phases with styrax and leatherwood. In the first couple of hours it's the camphorous side of marjoram that accompanies the oud rather than the floral side. During the mid and base there is a gradual toning down of the medicinal aspect and ramping up of the styrax and leatherwood adding light floral, amber and leather tones to the richness of the oud. The dry down lasts for hours even days on clothing and it's just magical. When you finally tune into it you may even feel elation as I do when I wear it, scent - 10/10 it's especially good for wearing during cooler evenings projection - good sillage - good longevity - 7 to 10 hours on your skin, much longer on your clothes

I have most amouage perfumes and I have tried all of them..I know that perfumes are very subjective.but for me this is best of the best .. it is a masterpiece.. I really wonder how simple it is but on the other side in a very sophisticated and complex depth of the smell..this is the best scent that makes me feel warm and comfortable in cold weather..it is so different and unique but it reminds me of something attached to my memory I can't remember or figure it out.. It opens up with a complex smell of minty, blueberry like smell infolded in a smokey, burnt oud.. the smell of oud in it is so different than any type of oud I have ever smelled before..then this opening settles down to be less minty and oud continues forever..but never dominates the smell to be like a pure oud scent..it is lovely though.. For me it is simply 10 out of 10..

At last an Oud-centric fragrance from AMOUAGE! On clothes the main player is this dark leather à la Gucci Guilty Absolute but on the skin is the non-animalic Oud wrapped in a thin veil of fresh spices the star of the show. The Oud needs the warmth of the skin in order to shine. Here we are not talking about agarwood (smoke) like in Interlude Man for example but Dehnal Oud with its typical DNA: the smell of Plasticine in the very dry down. Opus XI is a 100% masculine fragrance in my opinion. It is not a loud fragrance, but has an amazing staying power. The Opus Line never disappoints. Bravo, AMOUAGE!

A smoky woody bold Oriental that is reserved for the most daring connoisseurs of modern perfumery. The perfume opens with smoky herbal notes where the main ingredient is marjoram. It proceeds to a firm Oud heart. The Oud used is a non barnyard variety but very potent. The perfume settles on a woody resinous bed of styrax and leatherwood. This masculine leaning composition has moderate to strong sillage and excellent longevity. Clearly not intended to be a mass pleaser, this is the smell of a rugged knight or warrior. Haunting and evocative. Enjoy!

This to me is in the same style/concept as Le Labo's oud but with much better execution. The idea of having a fragrance that attemps to recreate a singular oud note withour relying on something premade by Givaudan/Firmenich (see Zara Oud). However this has been done much better and comes across as 2 parallel ouds: the natural extract vs the oud accord from the remaining listed notes (mainly the styrax and leatherwood). Overall probably the best oud scent if what you're after is an artistic/avant garde oud. 10/10

Love the Amouage house. Read reviews about this one and took a blind buy plunge. I understand everyone’s nose is different. I also understand there are many professional noses here. Me, I just smell it and either love or hate it. Always recommend sampling before a buy. All this said...this is damn beautiful. It’s deep and when I’m in the bubble...feel incredibly confident and mature. Very proud to have this in my collection. I’m wearing it now, inside (73 degrees) and outside (86 degrees). For me, any season.

I've got a lot of fragrances from Amouage, but this one, is truly a beast. The longevity and sillage is enormous! It's a simple combination but a complex feeling! A green, dark leather for those cold nights. But i also think you could give this a try even in spring. Apply carefuly, 2 sprays are more than enough. I've sprayed for like 4 times once, and it was too strong!! On the skin it last at least 12 HOURS and the sillage is 5-6 hours. If you put it on clothes you will need to wash to get rid off.

Manly alpha man manpower. Very strong, very long lasting, and will mask anything around it. Reminds me of Gucci The Voice Of The Snake in terms of power of silage and longevity. Has reminiscence of Gucci Guilty Absolute upon spray but this then settles into a buttery spicy oud. Definitely not a blind buy. Not recommended for closed spaces unless your evil plan is to choke everyone. Requires colder climate to cut the silage a bit.

My bottle of Opus XI has just arrived and I absolutely love it. I do have quite a few Attars from Amouage and lots of Oud from companies like Al Qurashi, Arabian Oud and Al Haramain. I do get oud even if not extremely strong. Straight after spraying it on, I felt like I have had something similar in my collection and I get a similar vibe from Arabian Oud Blue Oud and Al Qurashi Dehn Oud Ateeque (just these two are more "oudy").

Incredible dark fragrance, one of my favourites. Comes across as a mix of real and synthetic leather to me (like a pleasant pvc note) and dries into a smokiness. It’s not quite like that fragrance but it would fit the bottle used for TF Ombre Leather quite well. It’s strong, bold and only one or two sprays will last all day and probably way more than you’ll want it to on clothes. Bring out the gimp!

My first impression was that it is interesting, different from others in Opus line and this one has leather in it. Then I checked the notes. Oud? Well, sometimes when there's oud as a note I smell leather instead and vice versa. So I don't know. Good and perhaps even mild leather scent, not as deep as others have been in Opus line.

I'm in love with this Opus. Can not stop smelling it. Find it masculine. Not for women, even though some might try it on them. Oud or not oud / I see some people are not happy with the ingredients/ , it smells great, lasts all day on me and days on the clothes. Try it before buy !

@TimeSmells, the notes listed here are accurate. What you listed is the notes for Opus Library I. This is XI. There's a ginormous difference between these two fragrances and I have both.

Sterile smell and detol in short Beautiful, especially if it's cold, to me luxurious and luxurious oud. Stability 10/10

Opus XI from a Library Collection is daring, bold fragrance. This is definitely nor for a beginner nor the blind-buy but I love the fragrance a lot. Many times compared to Gucci Guilty (to me only fist minute). They do share both the same “medicinal oud vibe” opening but with time Opus XI will start developing fresh spicy notes with styrax and Marjoram/Leatherwood (those 2 ingredients I can’t comment as I never came across them). Overall fragrance is pretty linear from beginning till end but high quality ingredients and agarwood with styrax creates this warm woody/leathery smell, slightly ambery sweet and aromatic. This is for a very cold weather and you have to be careful not to over-spray. In terms of silage it’s out this world, performance 15-20 hours (I can still smell it after 2 showers). To me this is my 2nd most favorite fragrance from Library line of Amouage. It’s unique, masculine and ultra-beast worth of money!

This one is fun. Opens dry, herbal, and green with a lifting, effervescent quality that gets louder and louder for 20 minutes. A very bitter, pungent marjoram is the star of the show for quite some time. The oud is immediately apparent, but it's very obviously not a real oud: no barnyard funk, no real resins, no deep woodiness. I think this is where the "fake news" dynamic is most apparent--it's oud, but it's clearly synthetic oud. Instead of the real thing, I'm met with some of the more strident top notes found in Cambodian oud; namely, an astringent, medicinal, almost gasoline accord. Probably sounds weird, but this is the best part of the fragrance. A few hours later, it dries down into a cheesy, "dirty socks" note that, while not repulsive, is also not especially wearable. Christopher Chong was a wild man back in the day. Good stuff.

Burada açıklanmış olan notalardan oluştuğundan emin değilim. Emin olduğum konu ise bu bir erkek parfümü. Bir kadının bunu kullanacağını sanmıyorum. Odunsu notaların arkasında sakinlestirilmis bir ud var. Son derece olgun ve karakterli bir koku. Kuru-sert bir yapısı var. Kalite vurgusu baskın. Eski tarz erkek parfümlerinin verdiği bir havası var ama kendini eski hissettirmiyor. Takım elbiseye ile serin akşamlarda çok şık duracağını düşünüyorum. Tüm Amouage parfümlerinde olduğu gibi kalıcılığı ve fark edilir yapısı kuvvetli. Bence Opus serisinin en iyilerinden birisi olacaktır.

This is very much on the same ballpark as gucci guilty absolute and voice of the snake. Although I find the aforementioned much more well behaved and more affordable than Amouage Opus XI. This seems a bet more medicinal but it has a better longevity. I like the styrax resin twist here.

The opening is unique. Hard to describe, but haven't smelled anything quite like it. It drys down in gradients and eventually becomes a very smooth and high quality leather. I like it!

It smells like paint thinner in the begging. Later it develops into something like Gucci Guilty Absolute.

I had one spray on the blotter in my pocket and two days later in the ZOO I was thinking why my hand smells like a camel house. Well, It was so potent than when I found the blotter after the visit in the ZOO, I could still smell only the distinct scent of animal kingdom. Five days later, my whole jacket still holds the smell. Be careful! It's strong and eternal. And animalic oudy delight.

Дуже стійкий та шлейфовий аромат, запах шкіри але ця шкіра вона ніби копчена, одного пшику буде достатньо, два-вже забагато для нього, забрав відливант, радий що встиг ще придбати три мл і цього мені достатньо на життя, навіть не уявляю куди можна вдягнути цей аромат, може хтось підкаже?😂

تلخی بی پایان ... چند ماه پیش سمپل این عطر رو تهیه کردم خیلی زیبا هم بود ... اولین استشمام بعد اسپری بدک نبود اما بعد از چند دقیقه به این فکر افتادم که چرا کسی دلش بخواد برای این عطر هزینه کنه؟ برای من این عطر یادآور آدمای غرغرو و بی حوصله و آدمایی که ذوق و شوقی ندارند هست. ابتدا تا انتها یه تم عودی و گیاهیه خیلی تلخ و تاریک و سمی داره. چند بار توی حال هوای مختلف امنتحانش کردم ولی نتونستم باش ارتباط برقرار کنم. بازخوردش به شدت بد بود. اصلا و ابدا بدون تست نخریدش!

لا تشتري العطر الا بعد التجربة نصيحة، العطر معقد و رائحة العطر شبيهة بمعطرات او صوابين النظافة بالنسبة لي لا يستحق ابدا شكرا شركة أمواج انكم اوقفتم العطر لانه أصبح غير متوفر رفع التجار سعره وهو لا يستحق الشراء جرب قبل لا تاخذ

I quote selfridges "Opus XI is a romantic and cinematic scent that traces the origins of fake news – focusing on the exploration of the Middle East and Asia in the 18th and 19th century, as lands of mystery and exoticism." I read all the other reviews and they all described it well . This perfumes stunts you immediately and at 1st whiff you don't know whether to love or hate or what on earth is it . If I want to break it down for someone who is not used to niche perfumes I would say this is (dettol+ the cleanest oud you would ever smell). Truth is that you need time to understand how enormous and unique this perfume is .the scent conveys you to a rich hidden land like Oman itself the birth land of Amouage . Yet the company delivers all that it said this is marjoram and oud and leathery styrax. what else to say ? In this case "less is more" and Amouage compensates for that with a very unique,rich and natural ingredients. nothing smells soapy or chemical in this. Yet NO BLIND BUY this is a niche fragrance for smart noses . only question is what occasion to wear this?

Let me preface; Big Amouage fan Big Oud fan Okay, that's out of the way I'm running through and sampling some of the discontinued stuff from the Opus line, just to see what I might have missed. Opus XI is what I can only define as a rare scrubber from Amouage. It opened, and I felt a brief thrill "oh, this is going to be good". A gassy, petroleum - like, greasy resinous rush. Some herbal-medicinal greenness. I can dig it. Over the next 30-45 minutes, I feel pretty good about it. From that point on, the base becomes more apparent. Somewhat flat, one dimensional, cloying, scratchy, screechy. A somehow dry yet dank, musty synthetic, metallic muskiness. Some non descript sweetness. It smells... Old and moldy, and loud, but unnatural. I made it 2 hours and had to shower, Opus XI was giving me a headache. It reminded me of Bvlgari's Falkar. Hyper synthetic dry camel hide leather. On paper, I could love this. In practice.. it feels cheap and flimsy.

i’m the dodo who suggested (above) Opus XI reminds me of Zafar and/or Dark Aoud, not because it smells like them, but it reminds me of them, how they see Oud, their approach. Except this Amouage rendition does not have the barnyard quality of Xerjoff or the synthetic quality of Montale... it’s very refined, elegant, and precise... I was hoping for more of a filthy disgusting monster to repel the evils of life, but instead I suppose I can just use this to fit in at posh lounges, and I guess even to intrigue or impress a well-heeled date? It’s deceptively simple while also being deceptively complex, and it’s all rather pleasant... i bought a full bottle, which is gorgeous, and I will cherish it for the next couple years for sure, but I really was hoping for something much more dastardly & devious... perhaps I’ll get a bottle of Figment next, or just bite the bullet and buy Opus VII, which is sooo wiiiild...

Amouage Fan, Oud Fan - and yet this is the first time Oud has been used (I believe) in an Amouage scent as a dominant note. Such anticipation.... Initially on my first wearing I was disappointed. This opens with a herbal oud projecting a tiger balm/germoline like quality. Comes off as balmy and resinous. This stage I didn't care for - almost afraid to leave the house. This then morphs into oud (non fecal or cheesy) slowly becoming a deep dark leather with oud overtones. My second wearing was the same, only I loved it more. I understood it, I realised the quality of what I was smelling in terms of composition, blending and ingredients was spectacular. The tiger balm part no longer bothered me. The dry down is not the most original but the scent as a whole is close to perfect for its type. Long lasting and truly impressive quality. 3 days of wearing and not bored yet - 9 Shona's outta 10

Just got my bottle today. I was really looking forward to this because: 1. I love Amouage 2. I love Oud (My collection is dominated by Oud based fragrances), so this was an easy blind buy for me. Well well... what can I say.... I've been wearing it since morning and I DO NOT DETECT ANY OUD here. Don't get me wrong, Opux XI is still a very NICE fragrance, but I wouldn't call it an Oud based fragrance. it's woody and smoky but definitely not oudy. I like it still and made my peace with the fact that Oud is not the dominant note here. Opus VI is still the winner IMO ========== Update (2 days later) - I stand corrected. This juice DOES smell oud. The clean one. Makes me like it even more :-)

in the store the salesperson told me this is leathery, and I smelled the leather, I said: it's a weightless leather, he said: that's right... like a breeze passed by burdened bookshelves and obsolete collections, one can only wish to relief oneself from these nostomania. now here said Opus XI is the balsam of styrax, and there is the endemic to Tasmania plant: leatherwood, Eucryphia lucida. what a story, about the leather and not of it at all. much more sophisticated than Guilty Absolate and Bronze Wood And Leather, I sincerely like to spend more of my time in this library.

This is kinda funny. I once told a fraghead (Dr. Misan) "Amouage is working on OPUS XI!". I told him this about 4 months after OPUS X was launched! Now, here we are! Indeed, OPUS XI would be some leathery, woody fragrance with animalic undertones. I know the "Oud" here isn't a note. It's definitely an accord of different notes! I want this fragrance already. I may want to smell like this on my next birthday or Date Night with my babe :) @mr_cornells

From what I understand Chong sought to make this an intentionally "synthetic" fragrance, using a bunch of chemical accords purposefully as it was, like previous reviewers said, themed around "fake news". I won't go into an in-depth assessment of the notes and their effects as that ground has already been tread below me here. All I will say is that despite it's entirely synthetic nature this is probably my favorite leather fragrance ever.

I'm from a gulf country, I grew up smelling Aoud every few days either incense or pure distilled Aoud. That being said, I do not detect Aoud as main note at all, maybe less than 5% compared to other notes, this is was so disappointing for me. The person who points out Dettol smell was on point, the smell start heavy Dettol like scent then it gets softer with minty blanket but unfortunately still smells like Dettol. I give it a solid 6/10

A leather-suede fragrance: sophisticated, elegant, androgynous, lascivious, seductive, the smell of luxury and royalty. Opus XI is basically, a suede-styrax scent blended with resins and woods to strengthen and enrich the suede, 2 sprays are enough to leave a cluster of seduction and mystery around you. High-quality ingredients and performance. If you love leather-suede fragrances this is probably one of the best. Masterpiece.

Pure oud banyard smell at 1st i cant tolerate not to sillage coz i always and love heavy enomorous sillage.. but only the smell.. after a week give it a try and acceptable.. and love it.. all people here in malaysia cant tolerate. They are still uneducated well in fragrance especially niche fragrance.. now i did apreciate this masterpeice.. amouage is must always and froever

Where GGA goes more aromatic and bright, Opus XI turns bitter and herbal. The entire wearing experience feels medicinal. Like a man had been treated for his wounds, and is now all dressed up in his leather jackets, soaked with booze from months ago. One of my favourite layering pair. If you can hunt it down, it'll be worth it 100%.

Somewhere between medicinal, spoiled, and metallic there is a sharp vegetal accord in here. It reminds me of a marker for a whiteboard almost too. It pierces your sinuses and hits you right behind the back of your eyeballs. Fun if you want something completely unique and loud, but not for me. At least not yet, not today.

What ocasión and where will I wear this to? What were they thinking when they were putting this together! This fragrance repels people and unberable for the person wearing it! This stuff can be use to treat wood for termites! Disappointed!!!!!

Not trying to be a hater bc I love Amouage, but it smells 1 for 1 like Dettol (antibacterial solution for cuts). Go and get that for $10-11 and deadass it's the same.
