Nashi Toro

Three fragrances evoke the essence of Japan for me: Sogni by Meo Fusciuni, Mono No Aware by Baruti, and this one: Nashi Toro by Ānti. From what I understand, the evocative purpose of this fragrance is to recreate a meditative atmosphere: the scent of rain falling over Asian rice fields, the smell of tatami floors and aged wood. It is not a fragrance that seeks to seduce immediately, but rather one that restores inner order, like a slow walk among water, earth, and rain-soaked timber. Its beauty is restrained and cultivated. It is not “rich” in an opulent sense, but rich in space, texture, and atmospheric depth. The opening is built around nashi pear, hinoki, and black pepper. The nashi pear is neither juicy nor gourmand. Instead, it feels fresh, crisp, and almost watery, with a clear yet restrained sweetness. Hinoki immediately introduces the sensation of clean Japanese wood: resinous, slightly citrusy, and gently damp. Black pepper adds a subtle dry vibration, like a spark suspended in cool air. At the heart, the fragrance becomes more contemplative and tactile. The iris lends a soft, mineral-like texture, reminiscent of smooth stone or fine paper, without becoming conventionally powdery. Ambrette adds the impression of warm, clean skin, while the incense remains delicate and ceremonial, more like a spiritual mist than a dense cloud of smoke. At the base, the scent becomes even quieter and more reflective. You sense wet soil, damp greenery, the dry caress of rice, and a musk that does not darken the composition but anchors it. It is the most poetic part of the fragrance, because it does not conclude with sweetness or warmth, but with the feeling of a landscape slowly breathed in. Nashi Toro smells like a morning of water and wood in an ancient Japan, where the fruit is fresh, the incense is delicate, and the earth still seems to remember the rain. A subtle, almost milky creaminess from the rice bran softens the composition throughout, wrapping everything in a warm, silky veil.

Ordered a sample as I read that it has a similar vibe to Neon Veil. Both open up a bit spicy-cool but really what the two fragrances manage to achieve is their ability to tap into a very specific feeling and qualities; they are meditative, quite spa-like. Yet this is a distinct fragrance on its own. Much, much different than any others I have gotten my nose on, at least. Quite earthy (like soil) and very woodsy with a true-to-life starchiness like I have never experienced before. Never comes across as imposing itself despite being quite 'dense' in composition. The pear at the top is noticeable, melding nicely with the slight hit of spice along with a fresh and woody hinoki. Once the heart opens everything starts to transition quite smoothly; lots of incense, a hit of iris butter. Very meditative, very earthy-clean. The woods here are more like early morning dew, being neither dry nor damp. The sun rises and the clouds start to break, and it feels like you are walking barefoot along barely rained upon soil within lush, green woods. An ancient temple that may be lost to time can be intuited through billowing clouds of lofty incense. Very, very interesting how the scent unfolds! Feels elusive and yet entirely present at the same time. An incredible dry down: musky, woodsy. Lots of starchy rice but not overwhelmingly so--everything remains tempered beautifully with the woods and barely sweet smoke. Lasts on skin quite a bit longer than anticipated, minimum 7-hours possibly closer to 8, clothing gets the same. An exceptionally crafted fragrance.

OMG delicious rice salty perfume ! What a masterpiece and a mind game. Probably my fav rice perfume for the note interpretation. Dirty rice, green woody balsamic, sweet and comforting. Smells like all my years in Japan in a bottle. The stickyness and "emptyness" of glutinous rice sweets or red bean paste jelly sweets , cut in small portions, prepared on the table on an old tatami, ready to be served with tea. Red rice tea, smoky, starchy, boiled in an old kettle, seasoned by time. At the same time fresh with a hint of pepper and balsamic from the hinoki wood. As if the tatami room had it's sliding doors open on a garden with fresh resins tree and a typical pond, you can smell the sweet and muddy "pond water" smell too. At the same time the whole composition smells clean, what a mind game. Oh how magical and photographic ! similar in creation to Meo Fusciuni Sogni, but this less salty and more balsamic, while Meo's is more salty and dirty ( i love both but this is more wearable on daily basis , although Meo's more powerful in a way ) . Wonderful ! Unisex 10/10 ( love Bast also, but this one stole my heart ! )

Nashi toro is the best from that line to me. I did not really look at the notes before testing them all, and I was realy drawn to Rosa Antiqua but I fell in love with Nashi Toro. An earthy/ starchy iris where the rice and hikonki are pretty strong, and I love both of those notes. It is what I was expecting from Blanc Sada from L'entropiste in a way. The nashi pear pops in the opening; which makes a nice contrast with the woodier dry down. It is a bit of a cliché to use rice to evokes Japan but, the result is so good that I can't really complain. Its is a complex scent with a lot of textures, and the incense brings a kind of meditative, holy touch to it. It's a really good skin perfume as it does not project a lot, but it has that translucent quality that some musky perfumes have while being complex.

8/10. would be a 9 if the beginning 10 minutes wasn't weird on my skin. Smells amazing on paper, but on my skin at the beginning it has a dusty smell to it. My skin is weird though and does this sometimes. I think it reacts to musk that way. But after like 5 minutes it is gone and this is an amazing scent. I smell earthiness, hinoki and pear. Everything is so well blended, the pepper helps with projection while the musk also smooths it out. Super well done. A bit expensive, but if you have the money, do it.

I was very intrigued by the notes as it’s not something I would typically go for but I was curious. This is a most complex, layered earthy fragrance. The nashi pear is doing a lot of heavy lifting here to bring some sweetness to the notes. My favorite part of this fragrance is definitely the base notes : the bran and rice accords are to die for. So rich and warm. It grounds the whole thing perfectly and makes it smell so yummy and comforting.

This is my favorite from the entire line. It opens up with a juicy and mouthwatering pear, backed by a cozy rice smell. As it settles, it looses the juiciness, and a sparkling incense emerges. After a couple hours, there seems to be a subtle metallic vibe, but it never turns bloody or unsettling. Beautiful perfumery.

This is beautiful, the pear combined with the rice and bran note which gives off a sesame/nutty vibe. Intimate and cosy, and just unique enough. I think I prefer it to Diptyque's l'eau Papier. Chef's kiss!

Very well executed, I like itttttt. Underrated. This will become very popular. Def not a blind buy changes a lot on different skin and ph. But on the right one, just beautiful.

Boiled rice... but someone put pepper in it! I don't have much experience with most of the notes listed (I don't even know what a nashi pear should smell of, I know rice absolute exist but never smelt it and do not have any idea of how to make a "bran" accord) so my review this time will be less specific. I decided to review this anyway because I found it very pleasant and quite original. Got the sample from a shop, didn't know anything about the brand, totally blind tested it. Immediatly on the opening I get the smell you feel when you open a pot where some white rice is boiling, warm, conforting... but someone put some black pepper in it, and a small cube of incense is burning in the flame used to cook the rice. No fruity nuance, nothing from this side (but maybe this is due to the fact I don't even know the smell of nashi pear). After some time it turns a little bit floreal (undefined, the notes list include iris butter but i cannot pinpoint it clearly, and do not get much powdery nuances). On the drydown it turns musky, like soft musk in a bakery (the rice thing is still present but more on the background), very relaxing I must admit, at least on my skin. I had the chance to smell it on other persons and it was less pleasant, more peppery, less rice, and the musk was more pungent so don't blind buy following the first part of my review without testing it on your skin. Longevity is good, sillageprojection is mild, as you can expect from this kind of profile. Price is a little bit high for this kind of fragrance (retails at around 200 euros here).

I have no idea what Hinoki smells like in the real World (woody/ cedar like apparently) but as it's a part of the perfumer's story here we can be fairly certain that she is fond of it. The taste of Nashi pears can not hold a candle to the luscious scent and taste of a ripe Williams pear and I am barely able to identify the presence of anything distinctly fruity here. Despite these quibbles I rather like this fragrance. For me it'a soft, warm woody invention with a hint of toasted rice or freshly baked bread and a kind of toffee/caramel note which permeates its lower reaches. Tested from a sample. I like it but not enough to consider buying it.

Rice bomb. Very realistic, and dried down more woody. I don't like heavy hinoki (it reminds me of soy sauce) but this one doesn't have a ton. I was reminded of Meo Songi but that one has stronger wood and stronger fixitives. The pear here isn't sweet or gourmand.

After settling on my skin, this fragrance was incredibly nostalgic for about an hour. The pear and bran notes combine and remind me of breakfast as a kid, when my mom would serve me oatmeal with pears or whatever else was around. However, this scene is short-lived as the black pepper-wood notes take over within the hour. From then on, it just smells dusty, dusty wood that becomes dusty incense. At the 4-hour mark, it becomes imperceptible on my skin. Personally, I do feel an attachment to this fragrance, from the memory it can evoke, but with poor longevity on my skin, and the limited situations I can use it in, I wouldn't recommend more than a sample of it.

on paper this is perfect. on my skin it’s sadly less than ideal. the rice + rice bran comes through in the first seconds and it is DIVINE, rich, husky, nutty, lactonic and starchy. it then vanishes and i’m getting heady unpleasant florals? or maybe the hinoki? a pass for me sadly

Smells like a cat's warm fur and the scent that your mom has left behind on its coat after a cuddling session. Also reminds me of freshly cooked rice you smell in the distance when outside in a park. Nostalgic and comforting, but I personally woudn't wear this scent, I see it more as a smell rather than a perfume you wear.

Wow! This really convinced me. The general picture here is fresh-masculine, in that clean-yet-outdoorsy kind of way. But first of all, there is nothing at all sharp here, no spiky super ambers, no screechy citrus replacers. Secondly, when you look from the general picture to the details, they are anything but generic. The biggest surprise is the rice accord. Nutty, savoury, a little steamy, it is unexpected, unique, and smells fantastic. Soon the steam gets a little less dense and allows us to perceive the other notes. Hinoki is the most important, balsamic, meditative, so much cleaner than regular cypress. Black pepper gives it an extra sparkle while orris smooths it out. And then of course there is the nashi pear that gives the perfume its name. I have not had one in a while and I don't particularly remember their smell. Regular pear is not a preferred note of mine, it is usually rendered too sweet. But this pear is both a real pear while also having a refreshing tartness. Goes fantastically with the hinoki, similarly to how the yuzu blends with hinoki in Yuzu Macaque, but here the whole smells more natural.

Comfort in a bottle! Nashi Toro is another one of my loves from the anti line. Honestly I primarily get a starchy rice, and a sort of peppery hinoki in the opening, but the more and more it dries down for me, I begin to get a juicy nashi pear that is utter brilliance! This puts d'annam's white rice to shame, and if you are on the hunt for a brilliant rice fragrance try this one! Musky, starchy, fruity and woody rice goodness. Anti just continues to impress me with their amazing compositions. My personal rating: 8/10

Another error among the Fragrantica notes. Iris butter is a form of orris, a concentrated solid essential oil, sometimes incorrectly called a concrete. Orris is obtained from Iris pallida, NOT Iris siberica. Both the Latin name and the photograph for that Iris Butter note are incorrect.

definitely starchy, savoury rice steam, and i don't know if it's the association but the hinoki comes off like a bamboo placemat. comforting and pleasant, and i can actually smell it unlike l'eau papier.

This is my favorite discovery of 2026. Starchy heaven!!
