Noir Obscur

This fragrance has received quite a luke warm response by the looks of the other reviews here. Maybe I would feel the same way had I got a sample to try at home or whatever and I conduct this review having only sampled this fragrance the once. I tried it at Jovoy Paris and that might not be the best setting for clear thinking either due to fragrance overload or being swayed by the unfamiliar and slightly romantic setting. Anyway I was pretty blown away by this fragrance at first, although I didn't feel it was special enough to warrant a purchase so perhaps I agree with the consensus here? The opening came off as a superbly warm, boozy, woody musk with masses of spicing but still not too in your face I was very impressed. This was one of the few I actually tried on my skin and The drydown was more of the same but with a slightly drier, smokey, incense turning to a natural musky, amber. I loved it, however my search was for something unique and although I couldn't site anything this smelled like off the top of my head, it just didn't wow me as much as MiN Moon Dust the fragrance I eventually purchased. Noir Obscur is great, a long lasting and high quality fragrance containing all the elements I love in perfumery...can't fault it really.

A ravishing vintage-styled Oriental, this is a lovely composition that blends in gourmand and spicy elements with amber and creates a sensual delicate feeling of old world style and romance. The perfume begins with notes of orange, tangerine, artemisia, rum and spices. As it settles, floral elements of rose, jasmine, iris and osmanthus are noticeable. Upon complete drydown, a sweet powdery animalic base of eather, patchouli, vetiver, cedar, incense, amber and musk is revealed. Beautifully blended with moderate projection/ sillage and longevity and unisex (slightly male leaning), this is very charming, sophisticated and old world. Perfect for wintry days at work where it envelopes you in a subtle and warm embrace. Enjoy!

Well, This one growing on Me. Warm, bozy, spicy but lack something. Then I went out in the cold. Wood, herbal notes, incense, leather and skin at the best!

Basically I have a nice earthy, spicy, chocolaty, Coromandel-style patchouli, rum liqueur, mugwort and a drizzle of dark, almost salty smoke. A sweet, warm and vintage amber on a Noir leather, just polished with grease. Although present, I hardly distinguish other notes in particular the rose from which I take a cream effect and the musk, jasmine and vetiver. They are all nuanced notes and well dressed in that sweet, romantic, soft, but ... obscura jacket! Already heard but nice.

I've got a sample of Noir Obscur thinking it could be a great scent because the pyramid is very interesting. But when I tried on my skin I was disappointed because, on me, it is just an ambery scent with a bit of leather, there's no evolution and it results flat. Sillage is poor, longevity about six hours

This is the least of his collection that I liked at first, as I begun to test it more and gave it more space it became an essential element although it has tiny little bit of an overdose skunk or bitter seeds as of the top note. I guess the cognac type has the bitter essence that gave the blend that tiny skunk. When it calms down to the middle note the skunks disappears and it begins to give powdery effect of the same mixture the soft leather with a bit overdose cognac with some amber, spices, and an incense (kinda reminds me of habanita's top note). Quite good though & kind of charming. His collection isn't a love at first sight to me it requires more patience and a bit more testing and acceptance. Edit (21st Feb 2021) 6+ years.. This is sweet dark spicy blend with artemisia, leather, amber, cinnamon powder, bits woods, and chunks of rum & patchouli. It's quite dark gothica because of the sweet it held and the spices that covers the blend. I keep on remembering the game "Obscure" on PS2 with it's dark teenage atmosphere! maybe both has the same name! but after all, this blend is quite amusing to enjoy from time to time with it's modern sweet dark harmony.

Noir Obscur had, at least theoretically, all the characteristic to be a big winner with me but as a matter of fact, I found it somewhat of a letdown. The fragrance is actually pretty decent but it feels sort of anonymous and definitely too quiet. An oriental woody with leathery facets and a tad of sweetness. There's one moment during the opening that things seem to take an interesting path when a leathery-iris combo comes into play. It vaguely recalls of the leather accord which is present in several compositions by Duchaufour but, unfortunately, it doesn't last long. In fact, Noir Obscur turns pretty soon into a cedarwood-vetiver drydrown with barely perceptible ambery facets. Not completely bad but I think the fragrance suffers from an overall weakness that turns it into an almost invisible skin scent in less than two hours. At these prices and considering the plethora of other similarly-themed options available on the market, this doesn't make it to standout. Sorry. Rating: 5.5-6/10

The first blush of this fragrance is a strong boozy/spice/leather that is so striking that there seems almost a tobacco-like tang. Iris and vetiver are in there, but rose is yet to reveal itself to my nose. In the end this is a handsome ambery-leather that I like smelling more on le Boyfriend than on myself. I'll revel in the scent of this on him, but the fragrance is not for me. I adore the bottles in this line- quite distinctive.

A honeyed-resin, I feel, but I'm not too sure... A stale, decayed-paper accord, and whilst this scent isn't bad at all, it's not what I was expecting. I'm not 100% sure of the notes as I'm sampling this from a spray decant, but there is the likelihood that there's some amber in this, possibly benzoin and / or frankincense. Either way, I'm not all that keen on it, even though I can't find anything wrong with it...

Very spicy with rum at first, but opens to a rather disappointing linear drydown. On me, the first thing I thought was the scent of Chinese medicine/incense - I must be getting all the spice, cedar, and incense. I don't seem to smell any of the citrus or florals other than jasmine. 4/10

Dark, boozy, woody gourmand. I'd say it's interesting, but somewhat messy. Too many ingredient that clash, but it's still appealing. It played yo-yo with me, one moment I liked it the next one - not, and repeat... Short lived and that made my decision easier to part with my sample.
