Vanilicious

I have tested a lot of Vanillas. Indies, designer, niche, name it! On my quest for The Ultimate Vanilla I actually resigned myself to 1. This quest had been ridiculously expensive as there are so many amazing vanilla scents and 2. Vanillas are too different for One to Rule Them All. I now own somewhere between 10-15 (depending on what your vanilla definition is) and have long since moved on to other pointless fragrance best of quests. However, I recently ordered from the only US retailer and went ahead and requested a sample.... This guy is the most authentic vanilla bean/extrait fragrance I've ever sampled. The open completely captures that smell of opening up a new bottle of fancy vanilla bean paste/scraping beans/for the 100th time attempting to taste fancy vanilla extrait even though you KNOW it's not yummy on its own. The projection is very very small; which along with my blown perfume budget will delay a purchase. The dry down also moves more into the common sandalwood-vanilla territory; but even then that fresh vanilla bean still peaks through every now and then. TL;DR for someone that assumed they were done with vanillas this has still successfully made me lust after it. It's expensive, a skin scent and I definitely wouldn't say it's the Best Vanilla, but it certainly deserves a spot in any vanilla snobs collection!

Not a vanilla lover here, but I received a sample. Initially, I smelled vanilla and a horrible rubber top notel. But THEN, the dry down was absolutely exquisite, reminding me of an expensive vanilla liqueur that became enveloped in the most beautifully orchestrated resins and woods. I love how it was not too sweet but a touch masculine to compliment the vanilla. This is a perfect vanilla perfume -- it smells expensive, luxurious and confident. I don't love gourmands, but this, I do think is perfect.

I am a vanilla lover so I must begin saying that I LOVE the scent un this perfume. For me here comes a bit problem between price and performance. I have sampled Another April aromatics fragrances and I hace likes them... Iridiscent is a great iris scent, Néctar of love a delicious sweet mix of tuberoses and rose or his great patchouli perfume. However I do not really like vanilicious. Regarding the scent It is nice. A very natural vanilla surrounded by a spicy and Woody background, typical in all the April aromatics perfumes. From the beggining I feel It very soft and delicate and the first time i sprayed It I thought: 'well, this is not the BEST vanilla but is natural and great for a daily use". Nevertheless one hour after I could almost smell nothing on my wrist. I have tried It also on paper... I have sprayed the strip at night just before going bed and the Next day I got just a very slightly vanilla vibe... So, I think I wouldnt Pay this fragrance as a niche when there are vanillas in the market with much better performance for only a fraction of the price. It is a Pity because this could have been a very good fragrance and one if my favourites if It would have a better performance. A dead ringer for Derek Lam's Something Wild, a lighter version of Nirvana Black. It smells expensive and well-blended, but it's mostly dark sandalwood, nearly an equal amount of vanilla, and that's all I smell. About 20% too woody and masculine for me.

unfortunately i go nose blind to this in 1 min, i can tell there's some form of a vanilla sweetness going on, but it smells mostly like paper to me, and a thick facial night cream (the cream part, not the fragrance, like paraffin if u will), it is pleasant at first, very woody and kind of powdery floral (not overly powdery), if it was a colour, it would have been a dirty light pink. there's also something sour going on :-??

on me, this smells very artificial. the vanilla doesn’t smell real in the slightest and it’s the only note i smell :( maybe it smells better in the winter...?

Each year, I like to try something I've never done before. Last year, I made extracts - all sorts of extracts - from herbal, to citrus, to, of course, vanillas. I have an obsession with Mexican Vanilla extract, which is how I ended up in the vanilla extract rabbit hole. I now belong to a group of vanilla extract making fanatics on FB, and the posts are actually very similar to some of the fragrance collectors on this site. There are plenty of photos of people's pantries filled to the brim with vanilla extract, people keep spreadsheets with details about the source of the beans, the alcohol, and the date it was made, and the date it is ready. People can go on and on about how batches are different and which vanillas go best with which alcohol solvent. I've learned that vanillas from different parts of the world smell and taste very different. I've also learned that the type of alcohol you ferment the vanilla in makes a huge difference in the taste, there's a big difference in flavor between a single fold, a double fold and a triple fold, and that a good extract takes about 18 months of patience. Let's just say that in the last year, I've learned more than I thought possible about vanilla. No surprise that vanilla in perfumery is my favorite note, and when I first heard that April Aromatics made a vanilla perfume, it went directly to the "want" list. There was no need to sample it first because I love the house, I love their woody bases, and their florals. Every perfume I've tried from them has been a love, and this is no exception. This is straight up vanilla extract...it's a Madagascar/Ugandan bean blend in a double fold concentration in vodka/rum. Madagascar beans are vanilla/floral and Ugandan beans are vanilla/earthy, and I smell both in here, but mostly earthy Ugandan beans. It's funny because the first time I smelled Ugandan vanilla beans, I thought to myself that I wish I had a perfume that smelled like them, and here it is!! The vodka/rum alcohol note means that you can smell alcohol, but it's out of focus - it's in the background and not a main note, it just adds sweetness and depth. The classic April Aromatics oaky woody base is there and it has a similar dry down as in their Precious Woods. I own nearly 40 vanilla perfumes and this is top 5, for sure.

I'm not sure how to rate this exactly, because it is so beautifully done and interesting, just not quite right on me. Initially, a blast of earthy sweet vanilla oscillating with gorgeous woods, until the tobacco came in and created a smooth gorgeous bridge between them. It is a light tobacco, less bitter and dry than the darker variety and very well balanced to prevent becoming an overwhelming vanilla pipe tobacco scent. It created a very smooth impressive blend and the first truly unisex vanilla scent I have ever smelled. With the sweetness tempered, I feel like I discovered new aspects of vanilla, and while it was interesting and very high quality, ultimately I found it lacking a fresh feminine something that would have made it more me. But having said that, I also have to be honest and admit that I have mixed feelings about tobacco notes, and this one was especially pleasant but became pretty dominant. My father died of emphysema and I myself was addicted to cigarettes for a long time, so tobacco is loaded with negative associations for me, and I don't want to downrate a fragrance because of that, because being able to recognize the beauty and quality of this note despite my personal experience speaks volumes for the value of the scent. I think this fragrance would smell amazing on a man and would recommend it to men looking for truly unisex--slightly masculine, even-- vanilla they can enjoy wearing without venturing toward gourmand. But personally, I ended up adding a spritz of JHaG Mmmm to girly it up.

The first initial hit is pure vanilla extract on me, but as it dries down it gets MUCH nicer. As it dries down I almost get a hit of cinnamon on my skin and I smell something that is weirdly Christmas-y (woods, tobacco) with an undertone of pure vanilla extract. I am loving the tobacco note here (tobacco, though, is one of my favorite notes) which keeps it strictly out of the gourmand realm for me, even though it IS sweet. However, this is not a sweet, cupcake-y vanilla, but a spicy, pure vanilla. It sort of, in a way, smells like some spiced vanilla-based alcoholic drink that I can't quite place. There is ALMOST a boozy quality. I had received this as a free sample when I bought another vanilla-based perfume (can't remember which) and didn't know what to expect. The downside is that projection/sillage is pretty low and I'm at skin-scent in about 2 hours. For me it's like a 7.5/10. I think there are better vanilla scents out there, but I do like it.

I get a big dose of Tolu Balsam and some tobacco notes, after that it is just vanilla bliss. I don't think it feels gourmand, it is a resinous vanilla scent. Very good, very well done. The projection is soft but it has good longevity. Very nice!

This is nearly edible. I adore it. I get vanilla, sandalwood and cinnamon, in a very close approximation of an all time favorite Japanese style incense called Amethyst.It's warm, comforting, lovely.

Smells like vanilla baking extract slightly sweetened. Pretty boring for me. If you like the smell of vanilla extract you will enjoy it.

Sweet, woody vanilla that smells like the inside of a Catholic church. A like but not a love.
