Aramis Black

First of all, I didn't like the other aramis fragrances since they seem to harsh on a rather young guy. In the older days people totally rock this kind of a smell in my opinion. But this is very different from what I can say wearing Aramis Black over a week now. It's very well suited for the younger generation (25+) I would say. It is very modern and elegant at the same time, I even suggest that the balsamic aspect turns it in a kind of a mysterious fragrance. You can easily wear this during work in office but best imho with suit and in colder months. At first I was sceptic but it turned out to be a very good purchase, I really love this smell and I'll tell you why: The opening is just fantastic- it starts very fresh (citrus or grapefruit) and sweet (cognag), maybe even a little sour (juniper?). Just around 30 minutes later it really opens up and you get a smoky/boozy vibe that holds on to around 3 hours on my skin. As longer you hold it the deeper it goes, I smell woods, tonka beans and especially the Incence and Leather are getting very dominant. This is what gives this scent such an exclusive appearence and I really like that about it. After 3 to 5 hours of moderate projection it gets very close to the skin which is really a pity since this stuff smells so good. But here is the solution: an atomizer- bam, problem solved. I highly recommend to try Aramis Black out and see for yourself. 8.5/10

This is an amazing smelling fragrance absolutely top marks to Aramis for making something fresh and accessible, without the usual generic trates. It opens fresh, and even a little green but instantly sweet and uplifting with that combination of resins, elemi, mastique...etc...combined with juniper making for a really sparkling opener. The fragrance is warm boozy and with some sweetness too but it's not easy to discern notes, apart from the apparent balsamic, incense vibe. Aramis black is never a cliche though and I can honestly say these notes are a breath of fresh air making for a unique opening. I'm afraid the bad news is the performance...absolutely pathetic and I coated myself in the stuff!!! I could still smell it faintly but very disappointing considering how good this stuff smells. I've put myself down as wanting a bottle but I'd only get it out of the bargain bin. This is not an exaggeration on my part I'm usually forgiving even to the weakest of scents but this one does die down very quick...it might just be my skin...who knows? Don't get me wrong the opening is fantastic though so I'd recommend you at least check it out for yourself.

A nice blend, not at all similar to the original. Most of the notes are subtle but it does have a bit of that berry-like quality (at first) found in many recent designer "masculines." There's a bit of this and that, and it seems to change shape, so to speak, often. I only used one spray and it's a fine mist so next time I'll wear more and report back. There's a kind of woody background hum but I don't get strong cognac, leather, or incense. On some level I'd say it's like a more interesting version of Midnight in Paris in the drydown (incense, tonka, a suede-like leather texture, lack of the usual "masculine" lavender, etc.). A far superior variation on this theme, IMO, is Phoenix by Keith Urban, but that one is quite sweet, by comparison. Note that coumarin, tonka, and tonka bean are all the same thing in this context. UPDATE: With a second full wearing I got more of the wood but less of the berry-ish element. I can see why some might say it's nothing special, so I'd say that for me it's only worthwhile in the context of having a lot of variety.

Aramis Black surprised me VERY much in a positive way! It's super elegant, masculine scent with formal vibe. The reason I love it right form the first test is the quality of the whole composition, which is refined and harmonious. I love the smooth balance between the spicy/aromatic heart notes mixed with the warm, smoky almost resin and woody base. I feared the tonka note could ruin the whole composition, but I was wrong and this note is not in a big role so no artificial, unexpected or useless sweetness here. If I have to say what brand made this scent on a blind test, I would say Atkinsons, because of it's refined character. The big plus is Aramis Black is very versatile, despite the smoky character in the drydown and it's very suitable for formal events, smart looking guys or just for the office. The classic mature vibe in it, doesn't give me sense of something outdated or hard to wear among modern younger guys :) To me, Aramis Black is a great find!

Aramis black is different and unique and deliously great. It is a very pleasant addition to my Aramis collection and I have to say I really do like this fragrance. Longevity is 6hrs+ and the projection is bad either at around 6-8ft.i give this a 8 out of 10 because with that kind of score all round. I could be bias being an Aramis fan but I have to admit the Aramis fragrances get the job done when doing a scent suppose to to which is to make you feel good and get you noticed!

I'm getting an overriding and not entirely unpleasant latex smell from this one. Like a surgical glove or a condom. Reminds me of Roja Dove Fetish. Anyone else picking this up from it? More than any other one in the Aramis line up I've tried this one really needs a long time on the skin to really develop. An hour or so isn't long enough. This one needs at least three on me before I get what other people get.

Aramis Black makes me think of Dior Sauvage mixed with Diesel Fuel for Life. This is a good sweet and rugged smelling fragrance with that original DNA from the legendary original Aramis buried down at the bottom. Good for night time and hanging out with the guys and I'm sure a woman can enjoy this on a man as well. I give this a 8.7/10.

very nice. i smell the cognac which reminds me of orange candy slices or dried ginger candy..i smell the woody scent also and something smoky.i am pleased as this is quite elegant.

I always found the original Aramis to sharp. This is a more mellow version, very sophisticated. Office safe, different and very nice. Very nice, a keeper for the colder days.

Another nice scent by aramis! Although can't beat the orginal aramis! It's a nice scent to wear but not a masterpiece! Still aramis original rules!

reminds me of a sweeter and spicier encre noire

Having spent the last month using Aramis Black extensively, I've decided that it's along the lines of Dunhill Black, still a dark inky green in olfactory colour, denser, drier and perhaps with a little more character. As one might guess from the note pyramid, it's cool and spicy, with a manly scent that I like very much (with hardly any resemblance to Aramis Original, Gentleman or Adventurer). I particularly like the sweetish balsamic drydown after 3 to 4 hours although it's needlessly soft on the skin. It's best suited to cool temperatures, and I find it versatile enough for office, casual and dressing up use. Much like Aramis' most recent fragrances, it also needs to be applied quite liberally to get acceptable performance (my main gripe and so get the biggest bottle you can and forget the miniscule 30 ml bottle) and the label on the bottle looks like a cheap sticker. The artistic inspiration is definitely there but I feel is somewhat let down by ingredients of mediocre quality. Nevertheless, I recommend Aramis Black and I'll repeat what I said in my reviews of Adventurer and Gentleman that: [Aramis Black] continues the impressive reputation of Aramis in producing quality/interesting/edgy, well-priced fragrances for men.

Absolutely nothing aromatic. Rather a nice, soft mystic fragrance. A bit strange and spraying it at first but it soon smooths down to some soft almost light & sweet fragrance which you will be able to smell yourself for a good 12 hour if used the right way an eau de toilette should be used. Perfect longevity for a delicate fragrance. A very soft yet elegant sillage. Nice but then nothing that will go true the ages as a must have. Not to be used if you like cheap fragrances that will let any around you know you are wearing a fragrance.

I received a sample of this a few years ago and I discovered just now that it's a great scent. The top is something weird and fresh but good smelling, unfortunately lasts only 2 minutes and it comes too fast the cognac-vetiver-incense combo which I think similar to the mixture of Burberry London, Lalique Encre noir extréme and Bentley for men intense. It's very intimate perfume, sits close to skin and lasts only 1-2 hours on my skin, so the performance is terrible.

This one is crazy. At first I did not think I liked it. Too much happening right at the opening. But I gave it a chance, once it settles, it is a light woody, fresh scent. I LOVE it. Great for spring. Try it on your skin, not on a tester. There is just too much happening the first few seconds. It is not a blockbuster, more of a light skin scent when you feel like being subtle but still want to smell good.

It seems like a slightly woodier version of Aramis Gentleman, the composition is very very similar, less boozy, slightly more refined, but as I wore that for two years I find this a little bland. I don't get an expensive vibe from this one, I find it a little generic, nice but nothing exciting. 6/10

The first thing that hit me was that it felt weak at first spray, might be that i have tested to many lately, but anyway the name suits it, black is what i think of as i get the incense and woody notes blended together, its nice but nothing special and sillage and longevity on my is very poor.

I agree with khangninh.le.12 - this scent has been readily available in London for a few months already. I wasn't too impressed with it - very dry and woody as I recall - although I might need more time with it to warm to it as some other Aramis perfumes have had this effect on me before.

In my opinion this is a unisex scent. As a woman I love wearing this. It has almost a clean leather jacket and Givenchy Gentleman mix to it. Marketing in Aramis seems to be aimed at men but I would give it a go regardless of age or gender. 9/10.

Wow! This is a beautiful scent. Boozy, woody, resinous and zesty...very rich and masculine. The opening is uplifting and the dry down is simply divine. Perfect for Autumn/Winter. Another winner by Aramis!

I loved their Caligraphy line. They should do something unique again. AlTho I do like Havane.

I quite like the incense in this one, but i found it a bit too dry for my liking.

Nothing very interesting going on here. My very first impression was, meh, generic. The drydown is somewhat better with a vague woody note, but, overall, forgettable. Longevity and projection are poor.

Spicey without depth, smelled it far too often before. Could also wear a budget label without getting compliments. By no means unpleasant, but overall a bit too lightweight. **

I am a fan of Aramis tuscany, tobacco reserve, special blend, and havannah. I am not, however, a fan of this. Smells like a mix of glade plug and hairspray. Good longevity, wouldn't go away or wash off.

I was able to pick this up for $25 at Burlington, figured I'd give it the old blind buy try, since the reviews were mixed here... So how is it: This is absolutely different from original Aramis. I get a grapefruit blast in the opening, which quickly dries down to a woody balsamic scent with some sweet notes in the background (must be the Tonka), and a little resiny, incense floating in the background. It's a nice formal scent, perfect for the office, and more suited to formal dress like a suit and tie, or a blazer . It is almost like if there existed an Encre Noir lite... Which was a little sweeter, and a whole lot weaker... As some others have said, performance is the issue, to my nose this becomes a skin scent almost immediately. That being said, others in my family have told me how nice it smelled even when I could no longer detect it. I have gotten better performance out of some frags I picked up at the dollar store. In the final analysis, 6/10. Scent is nice, but should perform better. If I paid full price I would be unhappy, but for $25 it's ok, and since its discontinued, it will be hard to find in future.

At the opening i get big incense blast almost like gucci pour homme I, then juniper berries with booze like rum with a bit of spices and in the dry down i notice mostly incense and woods. It's very subtle and dry which is not a bad thing for this fragrance. Definitely for fall and spring in terms of performance. Nice mature vibe Edit: if the performance would have been better i would call it fragrance of godfathers and set it next to my encre noire

Definitely a winter perfume. Warm, woody, leathery, spicy with added freshness and a hint of sweetness. Works splendidly in cold snowy conditions. Not youthful but not old school. A no nonsense complex, distinguished and elegant quality product with a detectable heritage. Smells like a bottled premium SUV on an evenings wintery road heading towards a prestigious french alpine ski resort.

Very strange and maybe a not very likeable start but it surprinsungly evolves into a scent very very close to Tom Ford Oud Wood, which sells for more than 150 euros. . I will therefore buy Aramis instead since the basenotes smell exactly the same on me at least.

This one has crept up on me. It’s kind of familiar and old school, yet I can’t think of a ready correlate. Ultimately, I guess that’s why I like it—and why I was slow to recognise its brilliance. 9/10.
