Perfume Calligraphy Rose

A VERY SEDUCTIVE ROSE The first rose petals were found as fossils in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and date back more than 32 million years. Historically, the domestic rose is thought to be a flower that originated in Asia and was first cultivated over 5,000 years ago. The Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used this flower both as a decorative element, for body care and as a bathing scent. One of the historical figures who boosted the popularity of roses in modern times was Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was a passionate rose grower. In her garden at the "Chateau de Malmaison", she had one of the largest rose beds in Europe and her gardens did not stop growing until she died in 1814. It was also in France that, in 1816, the first hybrid perpetual rose - the "Rose du Roi" - was produced in the royal gardens of Sèvres in Paris. From a more mystical perspective, the rose has been associated with the figure of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene and Saint Elizabeth Queen of Portugal (but who was born in Aragon). It is also the symbol of the Rose Cross Order, which stylises a cross with a white rose in the centre and has become a symbol of Christian esotericism. All species of 'Rosaceae' are amazingly beautiful and have continuous flowering. Robust growth and great immune defence against diseases have also been its characteristics since the beginning of its cultivation. An interesting fact is that the petals have both perfume and flavour. In addition to decoration in bouquets, branches and clusters, roses are used in the production of medicines, and infusions for aromatic teas, cosmetics and perfumes. A total of 126 original wild species have resulted in more than 30,000 hybrids due to human intervention, and these flowers are spread all over the world. The particular scent that most people associate with roses belongs to the very well-known Damask Rose. Roughly speaking, there are at least six main types of scents coming from different types of roses, namely Traditional (better known as Damask), Spicy (mainly with notes of anise, clove or myrrh), Fruity (with notes of raspberry, lemon, apricot, peach or banana), Tea, Moss and Musk. Being more objective, in perfumery, you could describe the traditional rose scent as floral and fresh, but it can have delicate nuances of powder, geranium, berry, plum, apple, lemon, tobacco, grass and clove. The rose chord delivers a fantastic aroma, both seductive and complex, and is increasingly used for unisex and men's fragrances, in addition to its traditional choice in women's perfumes. Several much-loved perfumes are distinguished by their strong rose note. As examples, I could mention labels like "Déclaration d'Un Soir by Cartier, "Portrait of a Lady" by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, "Armani Privé - Rose d'Arabie" by Giorgio Armani, "Florabotanica" by Balenciaga or "For Her" by Narciso Rodriguez. I really like all of them. However, my rosy preference rests on a rather mystical, terribly seductive and deeply oriental rose perfume. I refer to one of the masterpieces of the Estée Lauder group, but included in the Aramis brand, the "Perfume Calligraphy Rose" launched in 2013. This unisex perfume awakens with spicy nuances but immediately floods us with a strong note of Turkish Rose. The Turkish Rose is a variant of the Damask Rose, specifically grown in the Isparta region of Turkey. The scent of this rose is fresh and floral and adds hints of blonde woods, black plum and saffron. While I consider this rose to be the main performer in this Aramis, it integrates into a stage profusely adorned with myrrh resins, styrax, labdanum and frankincense. We can't detach ourselves from the deeply enigmatic and esoteric Middle Eastern ambience. We entered the kingdom of Scheherazade, the legendary Persian queen narrator of the tales of The Thousand and One Nights. We feel transported to a Turkish seraglio amidst its luxury cushions and translucid coloured veils. My rating for this ambience of romance and seduction: ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ - Opening: 9.0 (The fragrance opens a bit spicy, but you feel immediately a strong rose whiff in your nostrils with an ambary background) - DryDown: 9.5 (A fainting rose in a turmoil of resins) - Longevity: 8.5 (3 sprays last up to 8~9 hours) - Sillage: 8.0 (5~6 feet of sillage and up to 2.5 hours of projection, with 3 sprays.) - Uniqueness: 7.5 (Not really unique although it presents me with the oriental rose blending, I like the most. it recalls some other fragrances like "Rose Oud" by Kilian, "Spice Must Flow" by Etat Libre d'Orange, and "Beyond Rose by Clinique, to name only a few) - Wearability: 7.5 (Not suitable for mild or hot weather; a winter and fall fragrance) - Versatility: 8.5 (Unisex fit for day or night use mainly at leisure or for a night event) - Praise: 8.0 (Not consensual as oriental scents haters or fresh scent lovers will probably reject it. Nevertheless, I assure you that most heads will turn in your direction and will love your scent) - Quality: 9.0 (Well above average quality impression) - Presentation: 9.0 (Simple and attractive; The label evokes an oriental ambience without mistakes) - Price: 8.0 (This perfume price is quite variable depending on the shop where you buy it. It seems that it is becoming a bit rare and prices are rising. My 100ml bottle cost me €45, five years ago. Nowadays you are bound to find it with more expensive price tags, probably above €100) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Overall rating: 8.41 / 10.00 - between 7 and 8 = above average; - between 8 and 9 = recommended; - above 9 = definitely not to be missed; My opinion: I can only recommend "Perfume Calligraphy Rose" if you like the rose note. If you like the rose note and, on top of it, you are passionate about oriental scents, you must own this perfume or at least try it. If you want to buy it, please hurry because prices are currently rising. I may suggest you try also its saffron brother "Perfume Calligraphy Saffron" which eases up a bit in the rose note and adds a bit more saffron. I cannot simply attempt to top the review left by @RosaMilena for this exquisite balsamic rose. A breathtaking visual created for this beautiful juice. Phenomenal review! Rose Calligraphy is dense and sweet but not in a cloying, candied way. This perfume doesn’t take that avenue. The saffron in the beginning is wonderful, embroidering the rose with its threads of spiciness. The resins lend their caramel like density to the composition with a gentle smokiness lingering. The oregano isn’t dry, it’s as if it has been freshly picked and left in the slow, humid heat of the day—it is moist and balmy. I think the oregano and resins work together to create a “chewy” texture within the composition which is what I’ve found a few reviewers below feel in this perfume. The lavender is just a gentle whisp giving an aromatic touch—which I feel prevents RC from verging on almost gourmand. Overall, this is a velvety, plush, jammy rose creation which isn’t sugared or candy like—its silky petals under an ambery blanket, formed by resinous and balsamic notes—slightly sticky and thick in nature. It is nothing short of genius, a divine blend, masterful perfumery. The myrrh delivers a soft, comforting aura and a gentle smoky nuance, from the oregano and lavender you get a delicate aromatic embellishment. The musk and ambergris create a fluffy and slightly salty base, the balsamic sweetness follows its way into the dry down which works beautifully with the musk and ambergris notes. An abstract take on a classic floral in my opinion. I wear this in all seasons because I don’t care teehee. It lasts around 6-8 hours I find, so decent longevity. Persists well in warmer weather. On cloth the scent is quite different but I find it to be still, quite stunning. On my skin, this has quite an evolution and is in no way linear. I find smokiness, aromatics, syrupy nuances shine through at different intervals. On cloth it is still thick and dense, mainly resins and a glint of rose. Aaah, so nice. This perfume is a work of art and truly a unique olfactory experience during its wear. A huge mistake discontinuing the production of this. One of the best and most unique roses my nose has ever encountered.

I try to avoid blind buys nowadays, but my most recent one was Calligraphy Rose. I just couldn't resist as a major rose fan and seeing all the raves on MUA, plus the really good price! It's a beautiful luxe exotic rose, exactly what I was looking for to help round out my collection of rose scents. To my nose it smells like roses and Guerlinade, which is so odd! Like a rosy L'Heure Bleue. I even tested the two together to compare and couldn't believe the resemblance. The drydowns are so similar with my chemistry. CR definitely has this sort of Middle Eastern feel. Some reviewers below said that it has a Turkish Delight thing going on, but unfortunately I have yet to try some. However, it's nowhere near as sweet as loukhoum scents such as Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum, Serge Lutens Rahat Loukoum, or L'Artisan Traversee du Bosphore. Not as gourmand, definitely not fruity. Not really spicy to me either. Some also mention getting a rosewater feel from it, and I can see that, but this is so dense, while rosewater is so airy. I just can't help but think of L'Heure Bleue, probably because of the "denseness" of the scent. Roses laying over this really thick, powdery base. I'm not familiar with most of the notes that are apparently in CR, like myrrh and saffron, so I can't pinpoint anything beyond the rose, which starts to fade away as wear time progresses. The base is so warm, smooth, rich. I think there's something that's just ever so slightly vanillic in there too. It strongly resembles Guerlinade to me. Good sillage (enough for me to receive a compliment!), excellent longevity. While a man could pull this scent off, it leans more towards the feminine side. All in all, the hype for Calligraphy Rose is well-deserved. It's a breath of fresh air amongst rose fragrances. Smells so expensive and very niche, like an Amouage. I love this even more than the lovely Lyric Woman, Amouage's complex rose/incense scent. Calligraphy Rose was an unexpected love at first spray for me, and the Guerlain vibe (to my nose) is the icing on the cake. I highly recommend to all rose fans!

This to me is a heavenly rose fragrance! I adore everything about this and as a rose lover this is right up my alley. I like how it is definitely a rose centered perfume but the rose is not sickly sweet at all. At first it is like wow you smell the rose but then they dry down starts and to me that is so enjoyable in this perfume. As this settles into the skin the myrrh,frankincense, and other resins start to work their magic making this even more delicious to wear. I really like labdanum and this has a nice dose that really makes this smell lovely! It turns into to me the most delicious rose incense perfume. I also like the price point and how readily you can find this but I don't get why this was discontinued?!?! This perfume to me is so wonderful so I will be buying backups. In terms of sillage and longevity it amazes me! This stays on my skin till the next day. Clothes longer so the longevity is crazy good! For sillage I'd say this can be very heavy for some for me I'd say it is heavy but I actually like that. I only need a few sprays to achieve a good scent trail. I don't douse myself in this I just use about 4 sprays and it stays perfect. I love how the resins surround the rose in this perfume. It feels like the rose isn't overwhelmed or overshadowed to me it's a perfect balance.I also enjoy how their is a sweetness but it's tempered. This truly is a great perfume! I like to wear this in any weather except super hot as on me it could project too much like Narciso's scents do so I think this is perfect for up to early Summer where I live. I don't like weather or age constraints in a scent so I just wear this when I want and am happy. I think this is great for formal occasions too. I love CR and would recommend it to any rose lover who likes a good perfume or enjoys balsamic scents. To me this is everything I'm looking for in a perfume. It's not too sweet or to clean from the lavender it literally to me is a big beautiful rose surrounded by resins and it is lovely!

I bought this in hopes this is similar to Tauerville's Rose Flash but unfortunately, i feel these two end up entirely different. That's not a bad thing but i love Rose Flash and this one is just a "like" for me. So, i received this and from the bottle this smells great! You really get the rose/saffron combo straight from the bottle. I then sprayed it on myself in my office. About 10 minutes later, my colleague's 6 yr old kid who usually comes into my office and plays for a bit, came up to me and asked why the office smelled like powder! I immediately smelled my wrist to confirm her nose and yeah... like a kinda granny-ish rosey powdery scent which i remember from childhood visiting my Grandmother's and her collection of body powders. Impressed by her ability to describe the scent i asked her if she liked the smell and without smelling my wrist she shook her head and said "it's too dusty"..... and i concur, the perfect way to describe the opening; a dusty powdery rose. So there it is... during the first 2-3 hours this dusty-powdery quality slowly gives way to a amber- musk combo where i think this really shines. The rose is almost gone after 3 hours and here is where i find myself most interested in the scent. Performance sucks at this point but the scent on the skin is amazing and very familiar. What does it smell like? It smells like the mid notes of M7 by YSL... took me a while to identify but they have the same quality and almost exactly alike in the drydown. So i like this scent, performance is okay but honestly i cant smell it without putting nose to wrist. Strangely though people smell it around me and really like and have commented positively on it. So take that for what it's worth. I will be purchasing the sickly sticky sweet Rose flash again which so far, has been the best rose scent i've smelled.

I was aware of this scent for ages now thanks to Fragrantica and the amazing frag com here and was waffling back and forth on whether to go for it and buy. Finally I went for it after seeing it for an unbelievable price under $40. To sum up what this scent immediately reminded me of within the first, half hour...Baby Powder. Not Johnsons&Johnsons but a Talcum powder. Even my girlfriend remarked that I smelled like a baby. But that was just the beginning. Another mental association came to mind. Whiskey. It has a very distinct boozy smell to it. Since that is absent in the note breakdown its quite fascinating and a testament to this gems quality and blend. The Rose and lavender is very prominent but tails off during the dry down giving way to a sweet, resinous, incense smell that is very unique. The notes are blended together beautifully and I'd second all comments comparing this to a Niche scent of the Amouage variety. It also has Amouage's beastliness. I tested it on my arm upon receiving it and lasted on my skin for over 12 hours and didn't become a complete skin scent for me until hour 8. I was projecting for at least 6 hours strongly. Calli Rose is sophisticated, rich and I have to say, impressive. Its well loved by both men and women on here and for good reason. It's not a commercial fragrance and one most men, who aren't in the know, would consider. You won't smell like anyone you know when you wear this. I'm glad I finally said yes to owning this Gem. If the rumors of this being Discontinued is true it's a huge lost and my huge gain. Attention rose lovers: you must at least give Calligraphy Rose a try, and I will tell you why. This is a rose scent that is not a rose scent but IS a rose scent. I know that sounds absurd, but it's so rare to find a rose-centered scent that isn't so dominated by a "Hello, I am a big fat bouquet of roses, smell me!" That said, the rose here is red, jammy, but also classic in a manner that harkens back to classic fragrances of the past. However, the other notes are vivacious and are not mere supporting players, as it were. The opening has an oregano note reminiscent of that found in Ambre Sultan, the fresh herb, not that shaker you use on your pizza slices. The saffron is there so that you ALMOST expect oud, but mercifully, it sat this one out, which is refreshing, as saffron seems to be contracted to be stuck to oud and isn't allowed to demonstrate its beauty with other notes. Here it does lend that characteristic creamy, yet bitter, mysterious aroma to the opening and into the heart. Myrrh seems to seamlessly bridge the saffron with its own flavor of bitter creaminess in the heart, while styrax imparts a leathery woodiness. This dries down to a gorgeous incense base, the smell of olibanum just as it combusts and the labdanum is deep, dry, and radiant. On a tangent here: but please, Youtube reviewers, they are pronounced "OLI-buh-num" not "oli-BAN-um", "LAB-duh-num", not "lab-DAN-um." While we are at it, galbanum is "GAL-buh-num" not "gal-BAN-um." End of rant! Go get yourself some damn Calligraphy Rose and revel in it, folks. It's a real stunner.

Just wanted to add a note here. Now that the seasons are beginning to change, I was looking through my cool weather perfumes, pulling a few out for now in anticipation. I was also making decants for a swap with another Fragrantician, so I pulled out my bottle of C. Rose. Don't get me wrong - I've liked it since first purchasing, but I seldom wore it. I suppose that's part of the Curse of the Perfumista - having hundreds of bottles, but inevitably realizing that only a fraction of them are worn with any frequency. Anyway, as I was making my decant, I inadvertently sprayed some on myself. It smelled as I remembered it, but over the course of maybe 20 minutes, I became enraptured by the smell! I am convinced that the time it spent undisturbed had deepened it's beauty, and as it unfolded on my skin, I fell deeply in love. I'm talking top shelf, must-have-in-my-life love. I decided to wear it today - the weather is still warm, but the air conditioner intervened with magnificent results. I've been wearing it for about 7 hours now, and it's still going strong, with great sillage and projection. So even though I reviewed it once at least a year ago, I felt compelled to share this experience. While I always allow my purchases to rest awhile before I review them, it's now quite clear to my that some perfumes really do require a period of hibernation, so to speak, before they reach their optimum level of mastery. If you're lucky, like all good things, the results are worth the wait!

OMG devastatingly beautiful. Opens with fiery spicy hot saffron, a dusting of fresh vegetal oregano, sweet fresh from the vine honeysuckle, then bushels of gorgeous fresh blooming sweet Turkish roses with deep sweet resinous myrrh and styrax sizzling in embers. A thread of clean lavender woven through. Frankincense burns and cleanses away any mustiness and keeps this complex depth beautifully open, lively, spacious. Labdanum, musk, and ambergris make it richly sensuous and decadent. This is insanely fabulous. This is like a crimson red rose bomb on steroids on my skin. The wonderful frankincense clears my sinuses! It is not at all a gourmand, but I can nearly taste the chewy fresh herbs magnifying the intense rose scent! I LOVE THIS! It's like headspace with ROSES! Like sitting in a fully blooming fresh rose and herb garden, with a little incense censor burning high quality Omani frankincense, saffron spices, and amber next to you....and your nose sometimes nuzzled in a little baby kitten's clean musky fur while relaxing in all this! This is a powerhouse rich, dark, spicy, smoky, complex rose explosion that is bracingly fresh and clean with the frankincense. Passionate elegance realized! Natural sweetness only derives from the roses, honeysuckle, styrax, and myrrh. Nothing cloying or sticky here at all, it is clean and dry, and dances like sparks of fire embers on the skin. This is a gypsy flamenco dancer .........dancing in the firelight and shadows. Magnificent.

09:00 a.m and I just woke up. I have got my Calligraphy some days ago. Then I could just take a fast snif but now I am alone home and today I can test this scent properly. The temperature inside is 22 degrees and outside 16. I sprayed generously my left backhand and arm. Oh wow I wasn't expecting this. I thought it was a scent as Opium or Must. I was searching for a scent with agarwood note because nowadays a lot of new scents have oud in it. Thanks to the recomendation from you guys from Fragantica I chose this one. I can't tell you if what I am now smelling is oud but it has a "wow factor". The bottle is heavy and gorgeus with a wood cap. The liquid deep caramel red looks like some liqueur. Wood, resins, olive, sharp, a bit sweet as a liqueur, some soap and flowers far away. It is getting softer and creamy, the liqueur is turning smoother and round. I have just walked to the kitchen to snif sherry and olive oil. There is something of both in this fume. This is really gorgeus. This one has no gender but I am sure it would smell great on a man. Half hour has passed and the smell is still great, dark, deep, intense, strong. From a liquer to a perfume. It is getting beter and beter. So far I am loving it. It is getting cold outside (and inside) and this perfume is turning into something astonishing beautiful. The best blind buy ever.... thank you Fraganticans again.

I so enjoy the various opinions voiced about Calligraphy Rose! She inspires such widely varying reviews and impressions. Right away I knew she was one of those fragrances that catch on like wildfire, surprising some with joy and others with... less than glee. ;) I'm a true fan of any fragrance with superior longevity and sillage, but that was not what initially drew me. Because of the name alone, I had to try the fragrance, and even as the bottle and name intrigued, I kept getting recommendations from friends here that Calligraphy Rose was the ONE to try. So, I did! At first I found her a tad too harsh for my taste - needing a touch more richness and warmth to offset the strident, almost sour opening with it's sharp undertones. But over time this aspect ceased to bother me, and I became as enthralled as so many others. Magic slowly unfolds. The middle notes are indeed worth the wait - rich, heady roses and balsamic goodness! Dark Vanilla and Pillowy Incense linger with the base notes.... ahhhhh. NOW? I possess my own beautiful bottle, treasured and adored and as useful in my scent arsenal as divine Youth Dew and the equally therapeutic and amazing Aromatic Elixir. All three supposedly too old for me, all three HEADY and unique. If I had only a few scents from which to choose, I would want these three in my wardrobe. Five Stars!

What a beautifully mysterious, seductive rose. Perfectly sweet, jammy roses with smoky myrrh... How I adore thee! I've been wearing this beauty for all of an hour and I'm head over heels in love. Can't stop sniffing my wrist! I can see myself wearing this juice on summer evenings feeling like a princess in ancient Suza (Persia, not Arabia). She bathes in rose petals while burning the sweetest incense to perfume her hair. My utmost gratitude to Perfumeaddict777 for another BEAUTIFUL gift! Update: Super sweet, jammy roses with smoky myrrh that eventually dries to powdery vanilla but the rose is still noticeable... Perfection! Lasts forever on clothes (& about 12 hours on skin). How befitting that I used my small sample tonight when I went to see the new "La Belle et La Bête" at a French film festival. (Aka "Beauty and the Beast"starring Léa Seydoux. It won't be released in U.S. theaters 'til September). I kept smelling this deliciously sweet, smoky rose surrounding me. I must get a bottle of this gorgeous juice! *Sigh* ...Yet another "Must Have" bottle burning a hole in my pocket. It is worth it!

April 2021 London Cold London weather is slowly lifting and luckily, the sun showed its face today. Luckily my bottle of Calligraphy Rose was waiting for me after I had my afternoon walk. I have read many praises of this dark amber liquid and I could not help but be intrigued by it simply because I have a bond with roses and incense. Many have written about the depth of this perfume which for me smells of pure oriental beauty. I love the fresh rose opening which settles into deep resinous calming rose. It then slowly dies down to a warm powdery incense scent. The development of this fragrance is sublime and shows different facets from light and uplifting into deep and robust with final subtle warm skin scent. Longevity and projection on my skin is great. This scent takes me back to the desserts of Rajasthan wherein amidst the dry desserts of India, fragrant roses can still be found. The scent of roses are at times bound with incense, spices and dry dessert air makes Rajasthan unforgettable just like Calligraphy Rose. One of the most mysterious warm fragrance I now have. Absolutely divine.

This needs to stop. I wouldn't mind betting they don't have the vast perfume wardrobes that some of their characters claim to have - or that they've even smelled some of them. You want to practice writing? Start a blog. This isn't helpful to genuine users of Fragrantica. Another thing about this duplicity which annoys me is that they can enter competitions to win something multiple times and - potentially - win multiple prizes. They can also "thumbs-up" their own reviews. Clearly this person needs external validation, but I don't see why we should be the people to provide it for them. Roses, Deep Incense, and an almost vanillic dry down. What's so complex about that? My sample was excellent, and yet it didn't speak to me. I figured I could combine another rose I have with an incense fragrance and get something just as good. Maybe I could, at that, but this particular incense-rose has truly grown from like to love. While there are Many fragrances I love which contain rose, very few rose heavy scents do well for me - Tea Rose soliflores in particular. Well, for an incense lover this is THE ROSE! I received my bottle (thanks, ClairaNox!) on a warm summer day, so that the perfume was already heated in the mailbox before it hit my skin. Calligraphy Rose blossomed instantaneously into warmth and beauty. I felt like an Arabian Rose blooming beside freshly lit incense. Wow. I agree with ClairaNox - either because of the heat or the batch - that this Calligraphy Rose DOES smell a bit different than my (also wonderful) sample. And that's great, because to me it smells richer, deeper, better! Highly Recommended

Calligraphy Rose Ive heard so much about this scent here on fragrantica, so I ended up buying a bottle. The opening was very medicinal on me with the saffron, oregano and a herbal dusty sourness swirled underneath a beautiful fleshy velvet deep red jammy rose. It was a bit offputting for an hour, but some of the reviews said wait and hour or two and the butterfly emerges from the heart. The powdery heart starts the middle and it is indeed beautiful for a rose scent. The base spices begin to seep up from the bottom supporting the rose making this better as it goes along its story. The final drydown surprised me as it was a slightly more vanillic verson of vintage EL Cinnabar's drydown. Nice surprise.The notes swirl about and take turns. Ill be looking forward to testing this in winter. Winter update: Much better performer. The sharp medicinal edge has softened and became much more beautiful from the beginning. This is definitely a winter frag. Try CR+ Amber Mystique + Hypnotic Poison EDP for a whole other animal. ;)

I had been wanting this one for a while and finally purchased a bottle from a fellow Fragrantican (Thank you!!) This is good stuff. Each time I sniff my arm I get a different scent. About 15-20 minutes in, I got a fairly strong rose and was a bit concerned. Rose with my chemistry can either be very very bad or very very good. Lucky for me it was the latter this time. Soon after that I got a mild spicy/incensy note-not the strong Arabic incense my brain was telling my olfactory senses to expect-but really nice nonetheless. Then it turns to a smoky rose on me followed by something slightly sweet. And it keeps changing like this all day long. I got a good 8 hours out of 2-3 sprays. When I first sprayed it the first time I wore it, it was very soft so I sprayed more. A lot more. I should not have done that. It got stronger 15-20 minutes after I sprayed and I left vapor trails...:) All in all this was a great blind buy and I am so happy with it. In fact, I ordered the Saffron and am anxiously awaiting its arrival :)

When Rose de Taif* meet Musc Ravageur. Since the first second I noticed, under a floating big rose, a strong presence of a fragrance wich is similar with Musc Ravageur by Malle (see also Meharées and Myrrhae by l'Erbolario) this is more in evidence on the drydown when the rose disappear. This is a modern-vintage fragrance wich screams luxury but in some way it also remind me an oil you can find in an indian shop. So I can say this is a cheap-luxury perfume maybe. Rose and Amber based scents are very in fashion nowday but togheter made something really old-shool where the rose is almost suffocated by the rest. Basically here: Rose Ambroxan and Myrrh/opoponax on a musk base I can see the mother of the mother of the mother of my grandmother coming from The Sheltering Sky with this scent on. But in some way this fragrance is full of magnetism. Intriguing by sure. *Perris Monte Carlo. Rose Calligraphy remember me also a little bit Tocade by Rochas and Absolute Aphrodisiac by Initio.

This is scent is amazing! I recently bought a sample and as usual I couldn't wait to try it, so I sprayed it on the card. I was wearing a strong fragrance at the time, so I could just smell rose and was so disappointed. The next day, out of curiosity I smelled the card, and I was very pleasantly surprised. It was rose still, but also lavender, sweet resins (mostly a very sweet myrrh), ambergris, all with a barely there musk. This is now on my to buy list! On my skin, the opening is slightly masculine, once the top notes burn off it changes drastically to a smooth, sweet, almost candied rose...so beautiful. My only complaint...poor projection and longevity. I will still very likely be buying a FB, this scent it too good to pass up just because of poor performance, as it is pretty affordable. Edit/update: after having this for a while I still love the fragrance, but now I find that the performance is actually quite good. Maybe I was a bit anosmic to it at first.

I’ve had this one for about a year, I tried it a couple of times and then put it away in a dark drawer. Discovered it last week and thought it would work well in Sydney’s wintery weather. Like many other reviewers, I am not mad about the opening, it’s got a boozy vibe along with that rose essential oil note...the stuff that’s sold as pure essential rose oil but is really a fragrance oil with 1% rose attar and goodness knows what else. It settles down fairly quickly to become a voluptuous jammy rose with lots of resins, definitely has that oriental/Arabian thing happening. So this stage of the development is really lovely, I wore it to bed last night and it felt quite luxurious and decadent.. I don’t rate the longevity, it becomes a skin scent fairly quickly - I wore it today and had to refresh it a couple of times...but last night under the covers with the electric blanket going, it radiated beautifully, I almost imagined I was in a Turkish Harem.

Today I received the eagerly awaited sample vials of CR, and after just one spray I'm in love. Rose fragrances can be iffy: often soapy, sometimes too powdery and weak in the floral notes. CR is the solution if one's been disappointed by other rose perfumes, but one must like rich, dark and spicy scents. I happen to love them, and CR has been a revelation. There's no soap and only the slightest hint of powder. The rose note is enormous, and the spices support and sweeten it. This perfume reminds me a little of Turkish rose jelly candy, which is also sweetly intense. Unlike the candy, CR won't pull out your fillings or rot your teeth. The perfume will wrap around you like a beautiful silk scarf, warm and comforting. Sillage and lasting power are very good, this one's a compliment getter. CR turns out to be a perfect blind buy - thanks to the fragranticans who reviewed this beauty!

I don't do rose fragrances. I'll say that right from the start. Ever since I was a girl I've had a knee jerk dislike of rose fragrances. So what possessed me to try this was beyond me. Partly the bottle partly reviews, and partly sheer madness! But I am SO glad I did. I've been forced to re-evaluate my feelings for rose scents. The rose is strong in this, but complemented by the other notes in a way that's not overdone like rose scents sometimes can be. The dusty saffron and Ambergris with the balsamic resin of the myrrh balance it much better. My husbands smelled this and his first reaction was "Musk sticks!" where as others comment on other properties first. it changes and evolved along with you and the atmosphere and it becomes part of you not just an overlying scent which iw what a well blended perfume should. I don't 'do' rose scents... but I do Calligraphy Rose!

A bitter - balsamic-creamy rose like no other (in this order). My suggestion is to wait the complete course of the fragrance, with the three pyramid levels before judging it. I am big rose fan scents. Rose will stay in the perfume, but will transform during time. The opening is strong old rose and something else that makes it bitter and unisex, the unusual oregano note. This is not my favorite part, and I can understand that many people will judge the fragrance based on this peculiar note and opening. After 5 minutes the myrrh will enter leaving oregano behind and the fragrance will be transformed in balsamic rose, but the best part are the base notes that will stay as talc powdery creamy scent that I love (olibanum, labdanum, ambergris). In my view this is an outstanding creation that deserve a place in any rose lover perfumes collector. 4.5/5

This scent is divine. I imagine it to be of a beautiful Persian woman with long flowing dark hair and piercing eyes riding a stallion through the desert. An alluring body with an indomitable heart. Edit: now that I have been wearing this for a few days, I have found that when you're inside i.e at a restaurant, bar, house etc you really get that gourmand rose Turkish delight scent which I adore but when outside in a cooler climate you get more of the powder rose / lavender which I also love. I'm not usually a fan of rose but this has changed my mind. I can get bored of fragrance fairly quickly, but this is amazing. I can't stop smelling myself plus I have never had so many people, both men and women ask me what I'm wearing. It really is gorgeous. I was reluctant to write this as I want it all for myself but also want to share its beauty. Enjoy x

That was the idea" Mermaids (1990) Well, if you think about it, this is a perfume, no offense, I say it playing, which really smells like how it could smell a prostitute in the 50s. Of those dressed a little 'in Spanish, red dress and black lace, Carmen style. Not very young one. It really smells of sweat and other body odors covered in talcum, musk and rose. Smell also like Olive sauce. It is funny because while i was thinking that I have read a similar comment here below Emilleigh talk about green olives (must be the Oregano note) Very interesting carnal scent, but it takes courage to wear it and go around with it on. Very animal. I have written a serious comment just a few week ago so forgive me.

This is one of the most interesting and beautifully blended scents in my collection, hands down. I bought it blind, based on the lovely reviews and recommendations on three different forums (Fragrantica included!). It is a sweet, smoky, rosy, sultry concoction and I am LOVING it on my skin today. The bottle is heavy and classy, the scent is long-lasting but not a slap in the face. It's rose--but a soft rose. It's powdery--but not baby powdery. It's resinous and tickles the nose a bit, and that is quite alright with me! I get a hint of the saffron in there, which just keeps things interesting. Myrrh, rose, and musk together make the most delightful combination! Smells like a million bucks, but can be found for much much less! Definitely one of my best blind buys.

The drydown on this is absolutely luscious, one of the most delicious scents I’ve experienced. Intensely creamy, vanillic ambergris-musk with resinous sweetness. It’s not gourmand, but it still feels exquisitely edible — sweets like these don’t exist, but I wish they did! The opening can be a bit challenging — the rose is very heady at first, and some may find the oregano or saffron distracting (I personally love the subtle herbal and spice qualities they bring, which temper what could otherwise easily be an blowsy fragrance!) However, as another reviewer suggested, I really encourage you to let Calligraphy Rose ride through its various stages when testing, as it is far from linear, and there are some truly magnificent chapters in store.

Ok, I have hundreds of perfumes so I couldn't even imagine that something will kill me and blow my mind for hours and days. Also I wouldn't be person who is enjoying news and writing compliments for new release. But Calligraphy Rose is unbelievable fragrance.... I never ever was so strongly kicked into my head... This is beauty in its purest form ever. Amazing marriage between rose, saffron and resins. Not sweet at all, very middle eastern, Turkish, tea, rose oils worth thousands of dollars for a drop, resins from ancient world. Unbelievable!!! New space and new generation of fragrances. Nothing like that was before in history. So even don't think just look for it and buy even you will spend last penny.

Simply gorgeous fragrance. I would very much like to thank my swap partner for this lovely number. I had no idea it existed until it was offered to me. So let me first begin saying I do not do rose well at all. I completely and utterly dislike anything rose.. but wait do I? This is the exception to the rule. While yes I do smell rose it's been done in such an amazing way that it makes it very appealing. The musk and some sort of spice drown out heavy rose and make a luxurious love potion. Honestly I can't stop smelling my hand. It's got a sweetness to it and I can see it being unisex but in no way is this masculine. It's got that slight mid eastern vibe going. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Wow, Just recieved this as a gift for myself because of all the great reviews on this perfume! My new comfort scent... This is the most wonderful take on ROSE. I purchased this because of the resins and some said it had a Doir Eau Sauvage Parfume + Rose vibe... And I could see that, but not as much buttery myrrh. Yes, you do get a Blast of Rose and Saffron in the beginning and drying down into a soothing warm creamy powdered tea scent + Myrrh/Olibanum + Rose. Some have said that it is too feminine... I could see that sorta, but I don't get that vibe at all! It's what they call a UNISEX. A+ in my book... so magicly blended. And for the deal at BeautySpin I paid $32 a No Brainer!

Well, well, well, what else can be said about the undercover masterpiece of the Aramis line.. A perfect marriage of rose and incense that screams 'CLASS' enveloping the wearer in a smouldering red cloud hardly any other perfume can confer. A rose so masterfully and respectfully treated, like the queen she is.. I thought before that Grey Flannel is the best value, but this one beats it - there is no amount of money you will pay that is too much for this Rose. And sadly, it is gone already. What a shame. Would love to add a third bottle, but let's not be greedy there... If you can find one, go for it, you will not regret. It puts to shame many a niche fragrance on all counts.

Calligraphy Rose holds the eccentric switch-reverse attraction of an alternate universe where you can be a guy, smell like your lady and love it all at the same time! Any fragrance that can take the wearer from a rosy oud opening to a crème brulee finish is a unisex two-for-one worth exploring. Who would have expected such a release from Aramis? Produced in Switzerland, this nuanced perfume lends credence to the Swiss reputation for quality luxury goods. Just one or two sprays lasts for days and days. Heady stuff, indeed! Kudos to jtd (stick figure far below) for a most thoughtful essay on rose in fragrance. Aficionados of the rose will appreciate such astute commentary.

OMG YES YES YES!!! This is for the first distinctly rose perfume that gets a BIG LOVE from me!! Reviewer Lepalm took the words right out my mouth LITERALLY! Rose is a beautiful note but often on my skin it is either sharp, matronly or pee. I have found a few "wearable" rose fumes usually paired with oud as with Montale compositions or covered in spices like in Marni. Calligraphy Rose is rose for sure but it is perfectly shrouded in all my fave resins without be too heavy, too earthy or loud and is just AMAZING!!! Update: This also lasts and lasts and lasts. I put it on around 11:00 am and could smell it on my skin the next morning . . . Aaahhh . . . .FABULOUS!!

When a big fat beautiful red rose starts to wither, the scent changes to an almost dusky, deep version of the original. I am reminded of that intoxicating smell with Calligraphy Rose. This is a deep and mysterious perfume..there is no friendliness to it. The person who wears it must not care whether people like it or not. It's not in line with today's sweet and light hearted perfumes. That's probably why it was discontinued so quickly. But, it's right up my alley. If you enjoy Agent Provocateur (or any of its offshoots), Classique by JPG or Ma Dame, Black XS by Paco Rabanne...this is for you. Dark, syrupy, smoky rose...yum! It just works for me and I love it!

blind bought this from recommendations of two youtubers. i got it and sprayed it on immediately. on first sniff, super strong!!! the rose and incense smell which i am guessing is the myrrh, were out for blood!!! i had to wait about 4 hours to start smelling the beautiful more calm(not really calm yet) mix of the rose and sweet smoky myrrh side. to me this is pretty manly. i don't mind wearing it. and my girl thought it is very manly. lasted all night. that's about 15 hrs since i sprayed it on!!!. very long lasting. on clothes, a week or two. honesty!!! love this on. definitely not a safe blind buy. try it first. unlike what i did. luckily i love it.

I have no idea how some of these listed notes actually smell in isolation, but I think this is really well blended. I don't know why (seeing as there is no chocolate listed !), but Calligraphy Rose comes off to me as a lovely warm "chewy" chocolatey ambery rose. How did they do that ? :-) It's rich, dense & almost edible - without being gourmand. I think it's one of those perfumes that amounts to something distinctive, that is better than the sum of it's parts. Lasting power is fantastic, I spray before bed & I can still smell it strongly the next morning. This is lovely, & excellent value for the money. I like it very much.

This is a very sharp, bitter rose when first applied, so much so that if I didn't know better, I would scrub it. Thankfully I do know better, because within 5 - 10 minutes, what emerges is a glorious, spicy, incense rose that I adore. I'm talking nose-stuck-to-my-wrist adore! Not that I need to - 2 light sprays is all that I need to have glorious wafts of rose and incense surround me for many hours. It's hard to detect much beyond rose, myrrh, frankincense, and a touch of labdanum, but I suspect the musk softens the edges. This is a real love for me, and anyone who loves rose and/or incense really ought to give this a try!

A rose lover's dream! A slightly sweet, rich rose note surrounded by notes of Myrrh, Styrax, olibanum. Hints of saffron at the top and musky notes in the base. A heavy frag in all senses of the word so go easy on the trigger. One spray to the chest and I can smell it on me all day. Very solid projection as well. Not exactly a frag to go grocery shopping in, meant to be worn with formal dressy clothes, makes a statement. Cooler weather and air conditioned spaces only, will get cloying in heat and humidity. Too bad it's discontinued so if you are a rose lover, stock up on this little gem.It's one for the ages. 9/10

First wearing this year because I decided this is going to be my St Valentine's Day SOTD because my wife and I really enjoy how the rose dries down in this juice, and the woody 'old school', vibe makes it lean a tad masculine. Yep this is perfect for Feb 14th. Every year I get my wife a dozen of roses and this year I'll be wearing Calligraphy to hopefully close the deal baby! Come on Aramis I'm counting on you! Note: I originally posted this for the wrong fragrance the original Calligraphy but realized this is the correct one here - Calligraphy Rose. In short, if you love rose this is a no brainer.

Breathtakingly beautiful (if you love rose like I do) with a Middle Eastern vibe - I swear that I can smell some significant oud in there although it's definitely not overpowering. I would say that this is a perfume best kept for special occasions (weddings, etc.) as it's so good. Ingredients are of very high quality, and sillage and longevity are top class. Quite sensual really, and more feminine than masculine in my opinion, although most men can just about get away with wearing it - especially when it has reached its soft powdery drydown. Highly recommended for rose lovers!

This is amazing! What a find! If you are a fan of rose oud with a real middle eastern vibe but still western wearable, you must give this a try! This is one of the most potent rose ouds I have tried if not one of the most potent perfumes I have tried. Literally one spray is all you need. What a steal on this beauty! Tons of rose, oud, saffron...and oregano for a little kick of something different, plus spice and smoky vibe. Totally unisex. It's truly a fantastic rose oud and can be found for a super bargain. Must have for the rose oud fans. Deliriously happy blind buy!

Absolutely beautiful rich, deep red rose, made bitter from the get-go by the myrrh but drying down to a warm softness. Very Oriental and could, I think, be unisex. It's nicely long-lasting, which I need, as my skin eats perfume, and it's strong, which I also like, as I wear many clothes (no bare necks or arms). I get many compliments on this, and on its companion, Calligraphy Saffron, which is a relief, as I had to blind buy both bottles, due to their discontinuation. After a couple of years of searching, I also managed to get 'Calligraphy', which I also love.

I was organizing my fall/winter fragrance when my eyes went to this juice. I had to try it and the luxurious aroma of Turkish rose with olibanum almost giving it that sense of honey. I bought several bottle, I couldn't understand why Estee Lauder discontinued this PHENOMENAL fragrance. The added aroma of myrrh gives it that really attractive sensual aroma. For $35.00 this juice is a steel of deal. Hopefully EL will revive this juice like YSL did bring back Jazz, M7and several other classic's. There's no doubt that this juice is 10/10..

Oh.My.Word. If animals had a signature perfume, this would’ve belonged to the Black Widow! A dark, dangerous lady with a red core. Black spices, luscious red roses, and a touch of gooey balminess that sticks to you like a spider web. If Matahari wore this, she would’ve had presidents spill out state secrets! This powerful juice smells like the older, sweeter sister of Yves Rocher Rose Absolue. One spray equals to 12+ hours of diffusion within your 12+ feet radius. If you love florientals, you just have to try this. Masterpiece!

I love this one so much. I've ordered a back up although one spritz lasts more than a day, so I'll not run out of it soon, but the discontinuation just breaks my heart. This is as beautiful as a piece of music that makes you have goose bumps and cry, or a painting that makes you want to stare at for the rest of your life. The rose is strong and bold, supported by myrrh, styrax and olibanum... just a dream. I think this is how heaven smells like. I also plan to blind buy Saffron and classic Calligraphy. I have high hopes.

Calligraphy Rose is stunning. I'm already buying more backup bottles of CR! I already have 2 and will ask for another for the holiday. It is a rich, resiny, almost edible rose, saffron and myrrh delight. The drydown is the BOMB, but the beginning and middle are also intoxicating. I have not been this impressed with a newer fragrance since Cuir de Lancome. I love my 80's and 90's vintages so anything from 2000 onward has usually struck me as "meh." If you love rose in a fragrance, do give this scent a try.

Ah my heart ❤️ so thankful with autumn temperature changes it feels time to wear this beauty again. Time in the cupboard has deepened the scent. The glorious red juice. So chewy, yet light and fluffy - such contrasting textures. The balsamic notes lifting up like a gorgeous sweetened black tea and then diving back into a dark powdery rose. I’ve missed you and now we can dance again. Anytime wear. (For me) just glorious. Different and yet I also love to wear her “sister”, Roses Berberanza too 😍

My mother burns papiers d'Arménie in her house -- these are coated with styrax sap. If you don't recognise styrax, you may not realise how dominant it is in Calligraphy Rose. Goes gorgeously with the rose. Does it last all day? Not on me, but although I have dry skin, it puts in a decent day's work at around 6 hours. It isn't loud for long. A great everyday perfume if you like every day to feel 50% Eastern mystery, 10% abandoned manor, 25% Medieval medicine, 15% Dracula. Which I do.

Hands down the best rose scent I own. Rose is always a bit tricky for me and although I'm a huge fan of the note, it doesn't always appeal to me. I'm very fickle and "loves" turn to "likes" then back to "loves" and sometimes can be downright unbearable on certain days. However, THIS is one of the best blended rose scents I've ever owned, very subtle, heavier on the resins, myrrh, olibanum, and labdanum than rose on my skin. I never tire of it. An absolute beauty.

Well this was an object lesson in not judging a perfume until it's had a chance to dry down properly. I am testing from a decanted sample. On first spraying, I hated it. I don't dislike rose perfumes, but the first 20 minutes of Calligraphy Rose were ROSE at nuclear strength, a solifloral blast of overwhelming proportions, which actually made me feel a bit dizzy. But... AAAAHHHHH... the drydown... warm resins and myrrh. This must be what heaven smells like.
