Antiquity

Update: 10 months later, I'm amazed afresh as to what a masterpiece this is. My small decant is giving me over 10 wearings. It's dark and brooding, but the peach, angelica and aldehydes bring a beautiful balance. I was able to purchase a 1.5 ml of Antiquity. Instead of buying the Mona Lisa, I paid for a ticket to the museum, sort of speak. I'm wearing for the second time now. There is a special note or accord here that is exceptionally beautiful. It may be the carnation! I have smelled a few great carnation notes, such as in Guerlain Derby. But this one is in another league. It brought Russian Adam to tears, he said. It is a leathery Areej oud. A very creamy smooth and wearable leather. Reminding me of vintage Hermes Bel Ami in that sense. It is more wearable and "nice" compared to War and Peace II. It's smooth and dark. It's very well blended. It does remind me of a vintage Guerlain Mitsouko extrait in some sense. It's been carefully blended. Great job Adam. None of the notes distinctly jump out at you. The oakmoss and oud are surely there. It's hard to pick out the Angelica. It's even a stretch to pick out the peach in the open, it comes in later. Just a slight fruitiness, and greenness from those notes. The hint of peach does lift and brighten some of the intense darker notes. It's like smelling the peach skin, and just a hint of the fruit. The natural musk is strong, but very smooth and well blended into accords. It's has a beautiful smooth woodiness. I would guess sandalwood, but more likely oud and patchouli. .I don't get aldehydes at all. As of the votes for the notes here on fragrantica: I think the peach should be lower, and the oskmoss and carnation higher. It's beautifully dark as some other Areej I mentioned, but this is rounded with a welcome freshness as well. Yeah, so it's great. I'm really glad I tried it. Yet a vintage shaker bottle of Hermes Bel Ami, and a Guerlain Mitsouko Extrait, and you have most of what Antiquity is. It is a close second to my favorite Areej, Siberian Musk. This is so good indeed! A slight knock to it's masterpiece status: From the later mid to dry down, it becomes a very strong musk and Oakmoss accord. It's still nice at that point; but not exceptional as compared to other Areej le Dores. PS: Wearing an older version of Roja Diagalev today, reminding me of Antiquity. Rating: 10/10 God bless you. A heavenly delight for a late-coming believer like me to Areej Le Doré's feats, Antiquity gathers dust, powder, a bit of leather, and dry amber to create a retrograde scent profile that reaffirms vintage-perfume love affairs while also initiating oud aficionados into a more cinematic, instead of holy, universe. Peach, musk, patchouli, and leather are particularly strong, reminding me of a nice jacket, found in an attic, maybe slightly marred by mothballs. There's nothing sweet nor fresh about Antiquity, unsurprisingly, and the large billowy cloud of aldehydes that settles into clove-like floral pageantry never strays too far from this perfume's animalic base, which is a clever rendition of herbal talc and dated newspapers instead of bodily secretions. For those with a library-like knowledge of perfumes, they'd probably be able to say what Antiquity most closely resembles (I was told Rochas Femme, which made me scurry to buy a decant to later be slightly dismayed at the similarity without likeness...). There's not much more to say, as whatever praise I might heap on ALD's Antiquity might inadvertently raise its stock even higher than the astronomical prices this is fetching on Ebay and Mercari.

Ahhhh man this is so good. Imagine if you will the most supple brown leather that it could be the inside of a very expensive luxury car. Add chocolate patchouli and bergamot and then wrap the supple brown leather chocolate infused citrus with a heavenly pure carnation accord. Like it was just plucked from within heavens gate and brought to earth for mortal men to enjoy. And then add the most beautiful Cambodian oud accord with it's multifaceted woodsy and slightly sweet caramel accord for the drydown. Add a few drops of musk and you have a concoction to die for. I love this juice! Well from two sprays of Antiquity I get all day longevity from 10am to 2am and even in the morning I could smell the basenotes. The projection though not stellar is better than the other three on my skin. So that 30ml bottle is going to last some time. I have to say I have never worn a scent that has given me such a buzz and has had me walking around all day on cloud nine. Absolutely amazing smelling masterpiece!

Un profumo magico, ti trasporta direttamente agli anni d'oro della profumeria. Un pezzo da non perdere assolutamente!! Da quando ho ricevuto la mia bottiglia lo annuso almeno 3 o 4 volte al giorno da essa, è come una droga, al secondo fiuto da assuefazione!! Senza dubbio uno dei miei pezzi migliori, con ingredienti di eccelsa qualità! Longevità intorno alle 20 ore più o meno sulla mia pelle, sui vestiti arriva facilmente a 1 settimana! Sillage moderato, secondo me è anche un punto a suo favore considerando la particolarità e la complessità del profumo stesso, sicuramente non un profumo per tutti, ma per veri appassionati! Sicuramente molte persone "fuori dal giro" potrebbero non apprezzarlo, ma del resto se si vuole compiacere gli altri non si acquista un profumo di nicchia come questo, questo è per se stessi, per un piacere personale!!!! E non delude affatto. Peccato sia già sold out, avrei preso un altra bottiglia volentieri. 10/10 sotto ogni aspetto.

I wanted this after being drawn in with the idea of wearing something that will be hard if not impossible to make again and so is very unique. It does fit the bill in terms of ingredients, but not quite in scent as something like Cuir de Russie does a similar style. It has a slightly animalic tone, a bit leathery, aldehydic and patchouli lead floral (to my nose), I do occasionally get wafts of the darker carnation in there but it comes and goes. This one is cool to pick apart as you get different things each time you wear it, with some facets stronger than others depending on your skin that day and the temperature in the air.

Hands down one of the best things Russian Adam has done, in my books. If you love modernized versions of classics, this one is for you. Incredible peach aldehydes over a musky oud in the opening but the real fun starts when the patchouli and leather start up their engines. We all smell things differently but I truly don't get how some of the other reviewers don't love this. I wasn't even that interested in this one from the initial press release but sampling it made a believer out of me. This is much better than most neo-chypres out there. Fantastic!

What a gem this is! Never smelled anything like it. Opening so fruity and citrusy but backed or indulged in amazingly rich earthy patchouli and a hint of oud that gives it so much depth. I can also pick up some spice here but dont know what it is. It does not develop much. You get a accord as described and it is there all the time and lingers. Just fades away with time. That takes a while because the longevity on my skin is 12+ hours, but as a skin scent. Texture is like honey. It is not a everyday scent its for special occasions.

Beautiful, smoky, sweet, ambery confection that has a vintage feel--particularly in the "creaminess" of the musk, the vibrancy of the (non-"safe") bergamot, and the smoothness of the leather--but that is also a totally modern and wearable spicy, leather scent. I feel like the oud, patchouli, and natural musk have this almost "caramel"-like quality to it as well. The smoky-sweet-amber-leather sensation reminds me of the feeling of Lutens' Fumerie Turque, though it's not a direct smell-alike of that scent.

For me this is The ULTIMATE BOMB, a Sheer CLASSIC & my Most FAVORITE fragrance of All-Time. For me this is a 100/10 fragrance, a pure MAGICAL & a very MESMERIZING, a very DIVINE, I am out of words to describe this. I wish and hope that brother ADAM release another version like ANTIQUITY II for those who were not lucky enough to experience this.

Oud overlaps vintage Mitsouko. Mitsouko is wearing a new dress. It's attractive.

Without doubt this is a deep fragrance, but for all the aged materials and care and attention put into them, is the final result really all that great? I don't think so. Let me preface that comment by saying I was hugely anticipating this release, but maybe that expectation was unrealistic? I don't dislike the fragrance, the opening of Antiquity with those peachy aldehydes and a honied leather accord are really interesting and truly like nothing I've ever smelled before. In fact honey looms large and it smells that way for a good hour or two. There's no sparkle though, no energy in the blend, it feels flat and stale to me, not the arresting vintage perfume experience that was promised. The oud is prominent but actually very mild in terms of impact, and more woody than animal or resinous, perhaps the effects of being aged since the 70's? Don't get it twisted Antiquity is strong and lasts for days on skin. I don't get the carnation unfortunately, I was interested to see how that played a part. Now potentially, I don't know what I'm talking about and it's purely down to my tastes not being up to much & the fanfare and adoration of Areej le Dore will continue regardless, you're free to make up your own mind on that. Believe it or not, of the four this was my second favourite so it feels harsh to bash it, I don't want to do that either but I feel obliged to comment with my true feelings. I feel the care put into distilling and sourcing these materials is not necessarily being matched by the final product. I've tried several of the previous collections and they run the gamut from sublime to 'I don't get that AT ALL?' the main reason I don't get it is that 'quality' obsessed enthusiasts are willing to smell really quite muddled and funky for a piece of the exclusive luxury action.

A very aptly named fragrance that has an extremely vintage feel about it. You get the sweetness and fruitiness of the peach and bergamot in the opening but there is a powderiness and muskiness that lasts for a good few hours (that I dislike personally) that adds to the classic feel. I get a slight floral element, assumingly from the carnation, and then there is the oud, patchouli, and oakmoss coupled with a slight herbiness. The dry-down really is the best part of this fragrance. Longevity is excellent and it easily lasts the entire day. It has very strong projection initially and can be a bit overwhelming for the nose, so no more than two sprays should be employed, rather than my normal 5-6 (hopefully it will help to reduce the powderiness)! I think the blending is a bit unstable and rough around the edges, possibly due to the ancient ingredients used. I did get a very good unsolicited compliment from this. Fans of vintage-smelling fragrances will absolutely love this.

A Musky perfume made in old style, and industry disappeared in perfumes distilling and manufacturing in our days , a clear scent of rose and leather combined in a very good way to produce a bomb performance of 8 hrs and more and you to take care of over spray coz it may chock ppl around you :D

I’m new to Areej La Dore and I’ve fallen in love with this house. I wish I was around to experience all of his offerings. I’d really love to just sample this one. I don’t expect anyone to sell their bottle, so i won’t even ask. But if anyone can sell me a decant, I would really appreciate it. ❤️

Tried this today thanks to a generous friend sending a sample. I...don't get the hype. This is one of the first ALDs I just outright dislike. It is like an inferior attempt at mixing bogue maai, and diaghilev. The opening is a bit of a candy wood, and the near instant dry down is just a powdery carnation. I was hugely anticipating this and it was a big let down.

The opening and mid are truly amazing I get hints of peach, aldehydes, moss, oud and patchouli, but the drydown is dominated by a gothic dark and disgusting carnation,a definite no go, high quality but much better offerings at this same price point.

Areej Le Dore does a woody chypre Roja Dove Diaghilev style and the results are nice but hardly the masterpiece some are making it out to be. The perfume begins with bergamot, aldehydes and peach. The heart is mostly agarwood oil (40 years old supposedly) with some carnation, patchouli and angelica. The perfume settles into a powdery base of amber, leather, musk and oakmoss. The perfume has a nice pleasant disposition but is hardly novel and it does not have the complexity of the chypres it is modeled after. Unisex, slight masculine leaning fragrance with moderate to strong sillage and very good longevity. High quality ingredients do not make up for a rather mediocre woody chypre sorry!

Antiquity from Areej le Dore. To me, this is the pinnacle of Adam's work. Not only as a composition but also due to the nature of the materials used. Only vintage materials, decades old, impossible to source again, and it definitely shows when you smell it. This one is my favorite from the house, alongside War and Peace. They both smell old, Medieval, and Ancient, although in different ways. I would classify Antiquity as a Leather perfume overall, but there is much more to it. It does hint at vintage chypres like Mitsouko to an extent, but only slightly, and if there would be any comparison to be made, it would be like if vintage Mitsouko from the 50s had a Medieval ancestor. There is a prominent Oud base, aged oud, old school style, deep and rich, therefore, it could also go as an oud perfume. One thing is for sure. It smells really old. There are supposedly aldehydes in the opening. I get none of that. They got lost in time. I get the peach accord. Almost spoiled peach that goes all the way through the heart where I believe it seamlessly morphs with the Cambodian Ouds' fruity facets to give the impression of an everlasting overripe fruit accord. The heart is dominated by carnation. What better choice than carnation for such a composition? Usually labeled as "old-fashioned", it comes across even more so here, as it is decades old. And finally, the base. Vintage Cambodian Oud, leather accord, lots of musk, and a gorgeous aged patchouli. The wood feels musty and rotten, the leather worn and beaten by the passing centuries, and the patchouli gives off a beautiful dusty-sweet-earthy aroma. The image I always get when spraying this perfume is of an old, Medieval library. With its old wooden furniture, the books with their yellow pages and leather cases, all worn out by the passing centuries. A remarkable feat to be able to suggest such vivid imagery through smell. SOTD AREJ LE DORE ANTIQUITY Was wearing this Gem in the morning and went to the timber market just next to my city. There The workers were shaving and cutting DEODAR WOOD/other pine wood species with saws and planers. It was a marvelous experience to sniff this gem Along with that woody notes of Deodar Saw dust. In the opening it is a bit fruity of sour notes with the vibes of rich earthy patchouli. To me it is having a hint of barnyard oud that increases the depth. I can also pick up some spice here but dont know what it is. It Might be the minty hint from Deodar Sawdust. However Its development was not much and i found that perfume body is all musky animalic and to my nose at this stage it was some how similar to FLEUR MUSC by Narciso Rodriguez. The performance was amazing and it is still close to my skin, longevity on my skin is 12+ hours, yet as a skin scent with musky base.

Old, old, old, this is what this one screams. A patina laden trunk, clothes of someone long passed carrying scent of them. Foxing on old diaries, with words of love and sorrow. An old house with memories of childhood, the swing, the oak tree and endless laughter. Yellowed photos, carrying more emotions than cinematic videos of today. Antiquity is not a fragrance but an expression of art that has been painted to perfection with vintage materials by master perfumer himself.
