Cuir de Russie

OK, I got a generous 1 ml from Sealed Essences. Of the 20 or so Areej I have reviewed, Agar de Noir is my #1 Areej, #2 of all my fragrances. So Cuir de Russi is from the same 6 th collection as Agar de Noir. It has similarities. It smells like a beautiful, timeless vintage leather. This opens as a powdery musk, and the florals of jasmine and Lotus are most noticeable at this point. This is completely gender neutral or leaning slightly feminine. It's surprisingly bright and fresh. It has a great violet note that is like in Agar de Noir. But of the florals here, the violet is the lightest of the floral medly. The leather is not very strong in the first 30 minutes. It gets more noticeable from the mid. This is not very animalic. It's very pleasant, and mass appealing I would say. The animalics get stronger, as with the leather, but creamy smooth, So it's very nice. But I would not pay the high price for this discontinued Areej. As it has no oud, yet at times in the drydown feels like it does. It sold for about $200 when it was released. As it doesn't have any high cost ingredients. It's not that unique or special. It's something similar you could find in the niche realm of fragrances, like Roja Dove. I would value it at most $500. This does have an exquisite spicy musk, that's a natural siberian deer musk. Longevity is great. A very concentrated extrait. Many of Russian Adam's works are very special, and you can't find anything as exquisite. - Like Agar de Noir. Areej Cuirtis, is much more leathery, animalic and masculine. But I do prefer this. Now in the late dry-down, the violet and fragrance accords are still complex and beautiful. Bumping up my rating... Leather fragrances have never been among my favorites. But this is much more than a leather. Rating: 9.5/10 God bless. John 3:16

The perfect weather to wear the moth in a bottle A stamped leather in the name of perfumery, when Siberian deer musk levitates on an ether of lotus oil, animalic beavertail oil mixed with birch tar, all layered on a brand new military boot. The boot has gone through the highest peaks of life in the name of solidarity and war. Russian winters are bitterly cold, and this was one of the few things that kept the soldiers psychologically warm. The perfect harmony between leather, musk, and a touch of florals. Being a chypre guy, this was something I kept eyeing for a while. I recently, only a few months ago, pulled the trigger. It was devastating when I gave it a try in the Bangladeshi climate, so I kept it for the climate I'm in now. And I dare to make a statement: this is hands down the best leather chypre that's on the market (aside from similar compositions from other brands). 2 sprays on the shirt, and you're teleported to the abovementioned structure, back in time. I also received a hefty statement from one of my math professors here as soon as I got into class: "Someone smells ostentatiously beautiful over here," which took me by surprise.

Holy strength! Have this filling a room off of one spray on a tester strip, 20 hours ago. Very strong. Smells mostly similar to War and Peace II to my nose (less sharp, pissy), somewhat similar to Cuirtis (less spicy, sweet), and vaguely similar to Jardin Savage (less smoky, spicy). This is just an initial impression - have yet to become too intimate, but.. what we get in ALD's Cuir de Russie is a musky beaver tail bomb, supporting a bouquet of powdery florals beneath smoked woods. From the birch tar to the musks, there is a feeling of burning incense lightly coloured by the powdery pastel hues of the florals. Absolutely beautiful and happy to have it as part of the collection

This stuff here is really top notch quality. Opening is great and it just gets better. If you are a collector and can find a bottle, I would say definitely grab one. Glad I was able to come across one. I will cherish this one.

It's a garment perfume due to the birch tar from my understanding. Some people have sensitive skin and can not tolerate the birch tar. This can be worn on skin as I have had no issues whatsoever wearing on my arms and neck.

Cuir de Russie follows a trend of softer leather type fragrances with a lovely floral backbone and a luxurious animalic tone. not smokey at all which is surprising. But overall I enjoy this one.

One of top 3 from the house.The Cuir De Russie impretation is the best on the marked.Brilliant mix of birch tar, blue lotus and natural musk.

Its among the older heavy hitters from the ALD.Its just outstanding and a special one.

Cuir de Russie is nothing like W&P, thats the opening statement. While W&P is dark and velvety, CdR is creamy and sweet. People who say they are of same genre must not have tried both side by side. It starts with honey and lotus. Very sweet and unique. Lotus note runs from start to finish for me. Soon after, beavertail oil joins in adding a smell of an animal to the mix. Very gentle but noticeable. White flowers are present as well, mainly jasmine, giving this mix a sparkle and whiteness. Base of CdR consists of amber for me, but alongside beaver tail, jasmine and lotus it is a custardy white, sweet and creamy perfume that is extremely long lasting and projecting. Crowd pleaser, no offencive comments received. No birchtar for me though, and no association to russian leather in traditional genre of which Chanel still stands as King of the Hill.

Super powdery scent, the violet remains prominent from start to end. opening with birch tar, the leathery smell is there, but imagine a powdery leather. After an hour or so, the deer musk really shines through and remains through out, the floral notes come and go, but they're more of supporting character to the violet & blue lotus. As suggested, its a garment perfume, but having tried it on skin, its performs a lot better and its totally different, super leathery and musky, which Im all for, but still quite powdery. I wouldn't recommend using on your skin, if you decide to do so, please do so at your own risk. Otherwise, just like any other ALD, longevity and projection is massive. Remnants of the deer musk still linger on a coat a sprayed it on a week ago.

Very clearly and decidedly related to War & Peace(I) and Antiquity from the previous collection but with a hefty dose of musky florals that take this into Koh-I-Noor territory. This borderland between dar, tarry leather and honey-sweet floral is quite pleasing and extremely “old-world.” Yes I’ve seen people claim this is a masculine scent but many of them may not be aware of what women’s perfume smelled like 50+ years ago. This is elegant and powerful. Nice work. Ps Russian Adam has never been shy about flouting IFRA guidelines. If he urges you not to spray this stuff on skin, it’s at least worth considering.

I have read that this perfume conjures War and Peace. I have never smelled War and Peace but to me Cuir de Russie is a juxtaposition of opposite concepts. The perfume displays several nuances: the opening is floral, which gives a feeling between a brothel and a funeral, but the drydown is comforting and maternal, what a baby would smell while feeding from their mother's breast. I disliked it at the beginning, but now I am starting to appreciate its beauty and depth. From what I get this perfume should have been called Death and Life.

I have a pitbull and husky/pitbull mix and they love to smell this perfume on a test strip. Take that for what you will. The leather is so good, different than leathers I have tried before this. The musk and castoreum (beaver tail oil?) give it that dirty or sweaty nature but the blue lotus and violet makes it real pretty. Two worlds collide. Would buy it if it was safe for skin. This feels like it was made for a scarf and leather driving gloves, but I don't own or wear either.

Unfortunately, this is much too animalic of a fragrance for me. I don't like it. However, with that being said I can still perceive an impressive smoothness to the overall composition. Doing my best to remove the gentle but intense feral notes, I also sense very lovely florals and a bit of creaminess to it. Even though the animalic components are too much for me, I can still tell that this is quality stuff. That says something. If the animalic component was toned down, I may have even given this a strong "love".

A smoky floral animalic musk with skin irritation potential this is carefully advertised as a ‘garment perfume’ . The perfume follows a similar theme of War and Peace from the same brand and has a heavy dose of birch tar making it mostly unsuitable as a skin scent. The perfume opens with the heavy birch tar and moves to a floral middle highlighted by rose, violet and jasmine. The scent settles on a base of heavy animal musk and amber. The masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong projection and very good longevity. I have two issues with this scent. One is in spite of spraying on clothes it irritates my skin (a bit on the sensitive side) making the wear very uncomfortable. Second, the scent is not hugely different from War and Peace released just a few months ago by the same brand. I am sorry the scent is not bad but it is not for me.

You know... when i first applied this blend i felt that weird sense within my mind & feelings that it's not what the perfumer wants to tell! I remember I heard & saw some writings about this blend that it's the smell of a Russian soldier in the WW1 and the early era of the 21 century (I believe it's a review I saw on youtube although I tend to get away from reviews but it was out of curiosity). So after i applied it i tend to suppress this feeling somehow till i reached my family & particularly my brother who approved and confirmed that it is NOT the smell of a Russian soldier... It smells like an antique shop inside an Indian serenity temple pure & simple.. I smell India... A temple of serenity.. I can't deny that it has some genes with "War & Peace 2" from his previous collection but this is just perfectly beautiful and it reminds me allot of one of my favorite blends of all time "Rozy" by Vero and specifically the "Eau de Parfum" version as it has cashmeran velvet scarf with tuned down spices, amber, & floral in an animalic frame. So basically it's violet, amber, castoreum, orris butter, musk, jasmines, & roses. The major drawback of this blend is that because of the old birch tar, so it's not healthy or safe to apply it on skin (as Russian Adam said on his social media). I am suffering with this collection, each one of those is just a piece of art as i never enjoyed any of his collection fully like i enjoyed the 5th, & this 6th collection, & i am suffering cause these are limited batches and it's quite high to purchase them all with 1180$.. Needs some sacrifices.

Maybe my favourite of the new bunch. Been taking the hit on skin, throwing caution to the wind, but hey, I’m a smoker. You only live once. The more dermatologically delicate of the species may suffer irritation; but from what I could find on the topic, for someone who does - for example - partake in the occasional cigarette, there are more imminent carcinogenic concerns than a little birch tar every now and again. In short; no, it’s not great for you - but there are far many more things in the 21st century that’ll faster kill us all than this perfume. To me this is everything War and Peace should have been. I’m a fan of that scent but it’s no love of mine. This, however, improves upon it 10 fold in my book. The DNA is similar; a musky animalic slightly pissy leather aura surrounds in 4D; but the blue lotus, violet, and jasmine rocket this skywards. It is, dare I say it, pretty as heck. That deft slew of unusual floral combos, paired with the animalic structure and that birch tar streak of Tolstoy setting up a scene just works a charm. It shouldn’t of course; it should be jarring and lack grace big time. But to me, the harmony is uncanny. Elegant and vintage. Manly. A bit sexy. Quite powdery. Purple. Hint of sanitary products. And to top it all off, somewhere in the early dry down we’re all offered delicious wafts of rice pudding; don’t ask me why. Ageing potential seems grand; I’ll be backing it up

Cuir de Russie follows the trail blazed by Areej's War and Peace and War and Peace II. The opening is a blast of powdery musk with notes of birch tar and beaver tail oil (not to be confused with castoreum). The drydown reveals fleeting violet and floral notes. I get little of blue lotus' characteristic watery turquoise, but perhaps it is indecipherable in the floral notes, which aren't that strong to begin with. The case continues to be powdery and musky with hints of smoke. I like this better than W&P I and II but fans of those will definitely gravitate toward this fragrance. Sprayed on clothing it lasts days, maybe weeks, leaving a lovely musky sweet powder. On the skin it can go nearly 24 hours if undisturbed by washing or sweat. A cool fall perfume. Smells like nothing else (non-Areej) and skews heavy vintage. Worth a sample and possibly a buy.

It took me time to begin to like this perfume. The reason is certainly that it has nothing to do with other fragrances named as cuir de russie also and so the first sprays are destabilizing. I was nearly on the verge of selling it thinking that I don't want to smell like this. But then it got cold here and decided to give it another try and right now it's on my sweater and as I am typing this I get the birch tar sending waves of nearly medicinal smokiness, all wrapped in a musky warmth and yes, some animalics that are on the verge of getting dirty but on the verge only. I get some creamy jasmine too. I think the balance between the smoke, the warmth and the creamy florals is very well done and I really enjoy it now. This one deserves some perseverance but I think it's worth it

As folks have stated, this is very reminiscent of War and Peace (and therefore, it feels like it shares DNA with the other Areej "cousins" of that scent--Inverno Russo and Ottoman Empire). I think it's an improvement over War and Peace in that it's not as powdery, it is a tad sweeter and more naturally floral, and the animal notes are all very well balanced. I like the opportunity to spritz and smell, though not sure I want to wear it. Of the aforementioned kindred scents, Ottoman Empire feels like the most wearable with its more floral-oud leaning and toned down animalics, and Inverno Russo is the most interesting with its leathery osmanthus and deep animalic base.

I really regret putting this one on, I must say... After about an hour or so, I'm feeling a little queasy, and I'm going to have to scrub it off. It's a deeply animalic musk, heavy on the poopiness and indole, and I can appreciate how well-crafted this is, but I just canNOT hack the animalic elements here. Nope. Not for me. Likely NEVER will be...

I love this a whole lot more than W&P since I find it more wearable and likable. It's a shame that it's a garment parfum. It loses a lot of points for me because of that and is the sole reason why I hate this fragrance. Please make an extrait de parfum version.

This is lovely, but I won’t be purchasing as this is not for skin. I would love this in a skin friendly version as I scent my skin, not my clothing.
