Chypre Oud

Very green, floral, animalic. Almost like an old stuck up chypre. The oud in this is obviously amazing. I have mixed feelings but I think this is a more personal fragrance you wear for yourself. You really see the quality in this fragrance. I recommend a sample because it will last you a long time! Don’t worry about performance because that is also very good.

Sampling Aromas de Salazar Chypre Oud, perhaps the most intense fragrance yet that I’ve smelled from the house, a classic chypre made more powerful, resinous, and spicy by the addition of oud, Eau de Chypre darkened and unleashed somewhat, pushing the chypre boundary somewhat. It’s very strong, has prominent notes of oakmoss, patchouli, castoreum, lavender, rose, vetiver, orris, a veritable ensemble of powerful notes in an elegant, supercharged symphony. I think it stacks up comparably to Eau de Chypre overall in terms of character while being a bit more focused on the resins, appropriately. Overall, very good. Chypre Oud is priced at $325 for 50ml, the highest-priced in the catalogue, and is sold exclusively via the house website, though I believe that Perfumology will carry the full line at some point. 7 out of 10

I tried this a few times, but struggled to find much nice to say. To me this is a bifurcated perfume, one branch being a STRONGLY animalic, almost fecal accord, and the other being a very vintage powdery chypre. Unfortunately the two do not bled well for me. The notes listed would make you hope for more nuance past the name of Oud Chypre, but there, for me, is not any nuance. It falls into both traps of oud perfumes and cyphers for me. Being too animalic, or too “vintage” and powdery. This house tends to do well by oud (for me), but this is unfortunately not an example of that. Additionally I’ve tried a few of this houses chypres, and none connected for me, so maybe this was a doomed to start with for my preferences. Otherwise I tend to really enjoy Salazar’s work.

Man this is just strange. Mish mash of ingredients reminds me of the San Diego zoo and not in a good way. Or that time I got stuck walking behind the horses at the parade. This is just foul! Not sure how you can be this bad at perfumery. Pass on this!!
