A Day in Grasse

A Day in Grasse was created in 2011 and brings the rose as a key ingredient, representing the flower that is at the heart of perfumery in the city of Grasse, in France: the Rose Centifolia. For the perfumer, spending a day in that city is seeing the world through infinite gardens of roses in soft pink color (as we call in Brazil, “baby pink”), with its fragrant petals that fall on the grass. And to portray these memories, she used notes of green leaves of Mediterranean herbs and a citrusy accord on top of the composition. Then, in the center of the fragrance, she combined high doses of roses with red clover. Finally, notes of vetiver and cedar fuse at the base, like an organic vase capable of retaining the floral aspect for longer. When touching the skin, the fragrance of A Day in Grasse shows how a good perfume of rose should be. It's like bringing your hands full of freshly picked petals to your face, sinking your nose, and feeling all the facets of this flower, which is light, clear, softly powdery, fruity, astringent, elegant, romantic, and even sweet, reminiscent of nuances of honey. And to balance the feminine aspect, making it more unisex, the herbs from the Mediterranean brought an aromatic freshness that gains continuity in evolution, thanks to the spiciness touch of the red clover (Trifolium Pratense). Then, the drying reveals a slightly woody base, with a lot of cedar. A Day in Grasse is not the type of perfume for those looking for that smell of dirty or metallic rose, which when mixed with leather or saffron, ends up becoming a base for fragrances that portray the Middle East. Here, the result resembles yet another Soliflore-style composition that, in a way, manages to evolve well on the male skin. The result adds up quality, good performance, and a delicious smell. It made me even more eager to know the city of Grasse personally.

So, there are different reasons why different fragrances appeal to us all. I can say personally that at times I see a bottle and think that it must smell good because of the way the bottle looks. I know this is irrational, but it’s more subconscious than anything I suppose. My point in saying that is that on first glance of seeing a picture of the bottle I thought this fragrance looked appealing (I hadn’t even seen the note scheme). Upon glancing at the notes then I was a bit more sure I would enjoy this, although I had some hesitation because fragrances that have a strong-scented rose in them are kind of ‘iffy’ for me. Well, I found a sample on ebay and went for it and was glad I did. It was like a trifecta - 1) Bottle looks appealing to me, 2) *sounds* like it’d smell good, and 3) then it actually did smell good. With that said, A Day in Grasse is a scent for a bright, sunny day. It’s a very earthy scent, not in a dirty type of way, but in an “Hey kids go out in the yard and play and get out of the house because it’s sunny” type of scent. The beginning of aDG is tart citruses, spices and something green. In the background the spices lurk along with the vetiver. Soon, the citruses wear off and the rose, spices and vetiver become the main part of this scent. I’m not familiar with what clover smells like, so whether or not this plays a serious role here I cannot say. Sillage is just right, not too powerful and not light; it can be overdone, but you’d probably have to put quite a bit on. It lasted anywhere from 8-10 hours on me. So, as I said, I hit a trifecta here. This is easily the best scent I’ve ever smelled that contains rose as a serious note (though that’s not a large number). I’m definitely going to purchase this soon.
