Bois d'Ambrette

Ambrette, angelica, and ambroxan in a sapphic ménage à trois . Unexpectedly pleasing. 4/5

My beloved. I will cherish this scent for a very long time.

I am so happy that I revisited this sample I bought long ago. I sprayed it blind and was immediately hit with angelica. I decided then and there that I needed to look up the notes and leave a review. I love exploring the green fragrance space. The closest fragrances that even come close to this are Angéliques Sous La Pluie, which had a similar opening, and Foin Fraîchement Coupé, which pairs green notes with a heavy dose of white musk. But that is where similarities end: Bois d'Ambrette highlights ambrette seeds, a note I have yet to see exposed in such a raw way as this. I like this fragrance a lot, it has a strong musk nuance from the ambrette, which is only deepened by added musks in the base. The Angelica opening is startling and green, but not too bitter (it's tantalizing in a dewy way). The Amyris walks a tightrope, adding a strong (almost pungent) pine aroma. This feels like a traditionally masculine fragrance that utilizes pine in a new, elegant way. If this perfume were a color, it'd be heather purple. Once again, Atelier Materi has shown me something new, and I am grateful for the experience. In my opinion, Bois d'Ambrette is not an easy ask, but I appreciate the artistry and how Atelier Materi has once again subverted my expectations.

Dusty, vegetal, sour and very powdery. It reminds me of Fleur de Peau EDP but with angelica (green haters bevare) and a citrusy note that doesn't disappear completely even when the fragrance progresses. I own a bottle of BDA so, when I finish it I will decide if I get a big one of Fleur du Peau as they are in the same family for me. Solid release, not a huge projector but lasts 7 hours. It is like you are wearing suede dust (that combo of ambrette with iris that I don't see listed but I get). Good for all year except very hot weather, totally unisex; it is not sweet mind you. Classy, understated, androgynous, interesting is what a lot of people have told me they think about this scent; I mean it's a weird scent being objective to the regular consumer, so here you have it. PS: my father told me the scent transported him to a place where cars are being repaired, there is metal and it doesn't smell human, there is also leather somewhere in that mental place. He liked it but categorized it as weird as I said before. I wanted classy librarian but I got gasoline associations...

I love the opening of the scent. On skin feels like a more wearable version of Bois Datchai (which is a scent I LOVE on blotter, but on skin there is a BO-ish smell I believe from the blackcurrant that I just can't get past). I get a faint reminder of that scent in this but in a fresh green sweet way that just feel pleasant and peppery -- almost like clean dirty skin? That's it. This is clean dirty skin. The faintest underlying BO smell but in a sort of pheromone give me more way, but in close proximity to a shower? Like a loofah full syrupy green piney bodywash and the sweaty body that's about to be washed together in a bottle. It's green, peppery, woody and sweet in a resinous way. Delightful, fresh and interesting. However, after just a mere blissful 15 minutes, I feel we've skipped a heart and gone straight to the drydown, which loses that special sort of niche feel. It actually reminds me of a specific cologne that is not coming to me right now, but smells sort of [insert any grassy but freshie cologne you know].

Bois d’Ambrette is an interesting scent, as it is unusual for a fragrance to lead so heavily with ambrette as the centre of attention. It’s definitely woody and musky, but with a definite green bitterness about it too - I’m on the fence. The ambrette in here is very dry, slightly earthy and made a bit damp with generous green nuances from the addition of Angelica. This delicate muskiness is elevated through soft synthetic musks, alongside the sharp touches of mandarin, ginger and amyris. The overall scent profile is very clean, pleasant and mild whilst still maintaining an element of uniqueness about it. I’m going to decide that I do like this fragrance, but it wasn’t an instant connection - which is how I know it isn’t a true love. I think this is a great reference fragrance for those who want to better familiarise themselves with the note of ambrette, but it’s not good enough to warrant the price tag.

Musky orange with a beautiful, slightly waxy ambrette nuance (most prominent in the opening). Green angelica and powdery like Texas Cedarwood. Crystalline ambroxan runs throughout all of it. Almost as if you took Louis Vuitton's California Dream and you added creamy ambrette and amyris to it. An elegant and very wearable angelica and ambrette fragrance. A woody-citrusy, full-bodied version of Chanel No. 18, as if they had decided to make a "male" version. But still very much unisex. For a fragrance named Bois d'Ambrette, I really wish they went full ambrette seed with it. I wanted a musky, vegetal, waxy, woody fragrance. To compromise on ambrette's uniqueness seems like a waste. I do quite like it and enjoy wearing it, but that ambroxan overdose is heinous. With a tad bit of restraint, this would have been a full-bottle worthy for me.

Gentle slightly dusty fragrance that does smell small, in how it feels like something that fits in the palm of your hand. It’s a nice little invitation for someone to lean in close to you. The greenness for me feels more earthen and rooty than vegetal. To compare ir with ther scents, I just picked up my Iris Ebene decant actually, and this smells to me identical to Iris Ebene’s late gentle buttery iris drydown, but Bois d’ambrette just lingers there til it fades. Not my style personally! I’m not too drawn to soft mild scents, but i appreciate how it smells

Unisex, original, fresh, I like it. I can smell musk, sandalwood, Angelica and ginger. More for spring and fall. With great ingredients, it is really a niche fragrance. Do not blind buy, you need to try!

Smells like inside of a business class car. And like you are a bit hangover. Like it's early 2000s. I mean, it's not bad. But this price is crazy considering the scent's simplicity

A Whispering Musk This warm, mature, and fresh creation opens with a fireworks display of mandarin and ginger illuminating the indigo sky. Ambrette seed, bitter angelica, and amyris build a harmonious rhythm of a woody-musky scent with subtle herbal nuances and citrus freshness evocative of a leisurely stroll beneath lush tree canopies bathed in the gentle sunset. After some time on the skin, a distinct aroma emerges, evoking the image of a newly oiled wooden boat basking in the last rays of sunlight protruding above the horizon. But the oily facet does not last long. Instead, it is replaced with an echoing harmony of white musk, amber, and woody notes. The Atelier Materi DNA is also present, providing uniqueness to this creation. In my opinion, Bois d'Ambrette is a serious, simple, and unobtrusive creation with moderate projection and a gentle sillage, more suitable for an office setting. Unobtrusive yet unique, this entirely French perfume exudes the aura of quiet luxury. The scent is pleasant and mass-appealing, enveloping the wearer into a sense of comfort, like a soft cashmere scarf on cool evenings.

I thought I liked it, but I don't. It is wayyyy to green for me. Nothing like I expected or remembered. I am sad to say I am definitely not in to this vegetal Musk scent. I can't get past it. It's the only note I can really smell.

Had high hopes for this, but it's just not for me. Strong ambrette and screechy ginger, a little too bitterly green for me. Dries a bit too masculine for my tastes. 4/10

The opening was nice, complex and blended well. But after an hour, it's all disappear, only Ambroxan left on my skin and lasts about 6 hours.

Ambrette and Ambroxan are two of those notes that when they're there you just know it. They tend to overwhelm everything, so it requires a light touch to get it right. Not sure this particular composition succeeds in that respect. First, ambroxan. Personally, I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's not a note I particularly like, but at least real Ambergris is marine and fresh. Ambroxan on the other hand, is sour and bitter and there's no escaping it. Second, ambrette can be fascinating in small quantities, but get it wrong and it's all you can smell (Dior Homme Parfum I am looking at you). Does the combo of those 2 notes work? Well, no, for the simple fact that they don't seem to actually blend. Ambroxan is strong during the first half, whereas drydown is mostly ambrette. What I also don't like is that the perfume starts strong, but calms down significantly to become skin scent. Disappointing.

Testing this blind, it opened with an unmistakable dry wood, like just out of the kiln, with an aromatic body around it and with a kick of spice. The spice element dries down and reminds me of bell pepper and black pepper with an element of smoke. Looking at the notes now, they throw me for a little bit of a loop. The ginger might add to the overall effect of the spice but there is nothing ginger about the spice for me. I get no citrus, and as stated mostly sandalwood, which dominates the fragrance, while the rest add character. I don't get a strong musky or powdery side, it's more aromatic. Longevity didn't seem long, a few hours till it dwindled down to a generic skin scent. At the price point I'm expecting a bit more. While the opening showed promise, for me personally dry down became a little too familiar to foodstuff.

288$ to smell like dusty hay, or an off brand cheap vetiver oil .. insanity don't see anything redeeming in this there are much much better options in every category this thing tries to fit into

HI AMBROXAN. HOW ARE YOU? I THOUGHT I'D MATCH YOUR VOLUME TO MAKE YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE. This is a safe space, so I want you to feel really comfortable, because that's what I do. I am a people pleaser. I want to believe you have a purpose in, what do we say—"exalting" the ambrette here. I know ambrette oil is quite costly, so we do need some bolstering a bit, right? Exaltolide isn't enough? Sorry, I could quite hear you through the DINNNNNNNNNNNNN....yes, the DINNNN you are creating here. I will wait for the musky, rooty-herby angelica to join us. I'll be patient.... Waiting... Oh, did you know that angelica root oil is one of my favorite natural materials, along with ambrette seed oil? Ohh, I can just make it out, I sense it now, just a wee bit, ok, well isn't that cute. It's competing with the ambrette for oxygen because you're a damn energy vampire, AMBROXAN. As Peggy Lee sang, "Is that all there is?" It's a good thing I can seek the solace of Chanel No. 18, Goutal Musc Nomade, and Parfum d'Empire Le Cri after this ambrette disappointment.

This smells like sniffing my mom’s purse when I was a kid. Makeup powder & mint gum. The opening smells like a botanical gin or amaro. It’s ozonic & aquatic with wet vegetal stems. Then I get subtle hints of powder & florals underneath & maybe some cool damp orris root. It’s milky, musky, & could be unisex but leans fem. It reminds me a bit of L’artisan parfumeur Premier Figuier It’s a unique scent. 4-5 sprays medium strong projection, lasts several hours

Am I the only one who thinks this is a photorealistic rendition of pencil shavings? Brings me straight back to elementary and middle school with the hand wound and mechanical pencil sharpeners. It is a very dry cedar smell just like the tray holding the pencil shavings of the last several days.

I enjoy all these notes in other fragrances, and this one is lovely but challenging. The sharpness of the Angelica is maybe too oblique to the warmth of the musk and the sandalwood for me. I’ll return to this in a few months because fragrances like this tend to grow on me.

Cedarwood, dry violet, grainy & lightly powdery muskiness. Minimalistic scent but great for those who struggle to find a dry, raw woody scent without it being overshadowed by tons of other notes. Pleasant!

Cumin-like top notes with stale ginger. No freshness or sharpness that's enjoyable. Dry down is leathery, very masculine.

I wanted to like it, but I don’t. I just get a stale/musty old closet filled with bandaids smell.
