Rose Ardoise

If you're looking for a dramatic, rosy, jammy, sweet and thick rose, this is not for you. This is a rose drawn with charcoal instead of oil paint: luminous, breezy and slightly green/stemmy. Imagine a dewy rose garden on a spring morning: cool, composed and majestic! The spices help keep it sparkly and slightly warm, instead of going full overcast mode, so you still get sun's rays weaving through Rose Ardoise like silver fairy dust, as if dewy petals are reflecting the silver light back to you... The leather in the base is for texture, otherwise I'm not getting a pronounced leather note in here, so rose stays through to the end, although in a fully restrained manner as is the house's philosophy. As for longevity, it's long-lasting, but not in the traditional sense. It's not meant to be smelled across the room for 10 hours on end, but it will hum and glitter in a unique aura around you for a good long time to enjoy. Rose Ardoise has quickly become one of my top favorites! To me, this is a better structured version of L'Homme a La Rose by MFK. While not majorly different, LHALR allows sage to run untamed and very soon steal the show from rose, which I truly detest...

Sweet, woody and spicy rose. Perfectly blended! Very elegant. I mostly enjoy the dry woody/leathery base notes note, because you can feel them immediately. Rose is prominent and beautiful, but it’s has a supporting role in my opinion. And the mix of spices is so good! Going straight to my wishlist!!! Follow me on IG: scent.guide

Rose Ardoise is a different take on rose. It’s bright, clean and refreshingly floral, but has an underlying spicy muskiness to it which is both strange but undeniably captivating at the same time. The scent is actually dominated by pink pepper which has strong rosy elements alongside its fresh spicy floral nature. The rose itself then sits behind the pink pepper, nurturing its sweet jammy nectar through the base. Combine this with a contrasting element of warm nutmeg and aromatic sage, and you’re greeted by the duality of warm spicy and fresh spicy. Overall this is a very enjoyable scent to wear. As I said, a different take on rose which is pleasing and satisfying to pick up in the air around you. Unfortunately I find it’s missing something, I pattern I’ve noticed with many Atelier Materi fragrances. They’re all really well made but seem to lack a bit of life behind them.

Why does this only have a 3.44 rating? 😔 Alright, so here are my 2 cents on this fragrance coming from someone who hasn't had much luck with predominantly rose scents. As much as I love Rose 31 by Le Labo, something about it turns a bit like (bad) body odor on me 😫 Soo... here starts my quest to find a Rose 31 alternative. I can say that Rose Ardoise is *that* alternative for me. 🥳 I might even like it more because of the ambroxan, although not highly detectable. 🤔 Since I'm obsessed with Rose 31's bar soap, I will continue to use that and incorporate this fragrance. 🥰🌹 I'm slowly finding Rose scents that I love! Yay!

I have a sample of it after seeing a review about it and decided to get it and test it. It’s pretty and towards an aromatic pepper, musky rose DNA, Ima not familiar to Rose 31 so could not tell if this is 100% similar. The opening reminds me of Eau des Merveilles from Hermès, don’t know if someone else notice this similarity. Stays on skin longer and the silage is moderate not show stopper and somehow it reminds of this vibe of a French expensive bodycare line.

A natural rose fragrance. Perfect for spring, fresh with the vetiver and the touch of pepper. For rose lovers, in fact Rose is the star of this perfume. But it is not a simple rose scent... A piece of art! this scent is 100% unisex to my opinion. 7/10

I love how joyful and uplifting the fragrance is. It is definitely a spring/summer day perfume, not very potent, but not common either. For me, the pink pepper is more intense than the rose and I can also feel the sage a bit.

It's an elegant rose, mix with soft spices and incense. They melt into a buttery scent, and a few dry vetiver is sprinkled on the top. I like this fragrance, but I kept thinking about Rose 31 when I was wearing it.

This is big leather rose to me, in a pretty pedestrian way. It smells like new leather if it somehow had an old rose oil spill on the soft underside. I think it's well balanced; the leather and the rose notes are pretty equal players and totter back and forth on a seesaw of who I smell in the moment. I do get the pepper and sage, but I barely get the vetiver and the nutmeg. I think the rose and the pepper merge rather beautifully. It has a decidedly vintage feel, though not in a dated, out-of-fashion kind of way. The blend is skillful, I'm just not excited about it. It's a good leather rose, but I feel like I have smelled it a million times. For something with rather loud notes, it sits rather close to the skin. I think this is great, it shows skill and makes it so people near you get a whiff rather than a baseball bat to the face, as it should be. If you like leather rose fragrances, try this one. The profile is a bit boring to me. 6/10.

I'm testing this blind and know nothing about the brand or their fragrances. This one opens up to me as a sophisticated aromatic of vintage floral and pink peppercorn. There's a little bit of powder after the opening and a classic soft rosy element comes to the foreground. The overall effect is more a throwback to the kind of perfume my mom would get from my French grandmother (her mother-in-law) in the 80s, wear once and leave it sitting around because she didn't know what to do with something like that (as she was more of an Avon person). Looking at the name and notes, there's no surprises, and testing blind I'm just happy my experience and notes align, butt the nutmeg as the spice component wasn't expected. To me the scent leans feminine and is more an ode to the past than something I'm looking at for the future.

From official website: Top Notes: Nutmeg, Schinus Molle Heart Notes: Rose, Sage Base Notes: Vetiver, Leather, Ambroxan Schinus Molle is not related to pepper of any kind. There is nothing peppery about this perfume. The spice element comes from the schinus note, and probably from the sage as well, but it's very subtle. In fact, subtle is the name of the game here. As it warms up, the rose comes through, and it is a very realistic rose (I think the Centifolia one wins the battle). There's ambergris in the background, but thankfully also very subtle. My only criticism is performance. I can tolerate way-too-subtle sillage, but longevity is round the 4-5 hour mark.

Flinty, glistening, metallic with just a hint of the rose, with pepper skirting in the air. Reminds me of Passage D'Enfer just a little with an incense-y scent. Pretty much a skin scent.

I like wearing this around Halloween time- it's a little sexy and dark. Not interested in wearing it other times.

I understand Atelier Materi's genderless fragrance philosophy, but using pink pepper to drown out the rose for that effect? Really? 🤨 I've experienced stunning green rose fragrances, woody roses, rose ouds, and even lactonic roses, but Rose Ardoise just didn’t work for me. The dry down (featuring rose, sage, vetiver, ambroxan, and leather) was lovely. Unfortunately, it took three hours for the pink pepper to finally dissipate from my skin. For those hesitant about wearing floral fragrances like rose, it’s worth reflecting on why that might be. If you simply don’t enjoy rose as a note or associate it with something negative, that’s completely fair. However, embracing the idea of genderless perfumes means recognizing that perfume notes themselves are inherently genderless. Historically, perfumes were widely considered unisex for hundreds of years—until the rise of marketing created the gendered scent stereotypes we know today. I’m glad modern perfume houses are working to move past these limitations 🌹 If rose feels emasculating to you, it might be worth reexamining that notion and finding confidence in a healthier view of masculinity 💪 At the end of the day, we are all here to smell good right? 😏 Lastly, a quick note for clarification: Schinus molle (Peruvian Peppertree) is the listed top note on the Atelier Materi website, and it’s the scientific name for the tree that produces pink peppercorns. I know it can be confusing—similar to how Pelargonium graveolens (commonly labeled as geranium) actually belongs to a separate genus of plants. So yes, this fragrance is undeniably pepper-forward, and sadly, it’s one that doesn’t work for me.

WOW! Pepper, Pepper, Pepper with a small amount of rose in the beginning. Pepper hangs around and still not much rose. 3 hours later, still pepper with a small amount of leather. This leans more toward men. Not for me. Glad I only bought a tester. Will try Rose 31 to see if I like it any better.

Wearing this for a test a couple of days from a sample I bought. For me it opens with a fermented type smell, like opening a bottle of red wine just about to turn. It kinda stays like that. The rose is a different rose, old rose. It’s definitely edgy. Hmmm. Not a safe blind buy. Yeah, after 30 mins still getting sour grapes. This is one of those you are either going to love or hate.

-Peppery rose scent. -Would best suit those who have an acquired taste for avant garde scents. -Has a rather realistic peppery note, like pepper straight from the shaker. -Not a major fan of this- the pepper note takes center-stage and is a notch too loud. (-)

Beautiful unisex, versatile, and an interesting rose scent, though no longer for me. I have a new bottle, unopened, if anyone is interested, reach out!
