44 Gerrard Street

I just received this yesterday and I must admit this is an absolute instant love. This was my third blind buy of an Atkinson’s of London fragrance and I have to say I’m quite impressed with the house. If I were to list my collection by genre / category of fragrances, Pirate’s Grand Reserve, His Majesty the Oud, and now 44 Gerrard Street would all be near the top of their respective genre / categories. They are not loud, beastly performers in terms of sillage and projection, at least not that I can tell. They’re subdued / subtle, but for their lack of being “loud”, they are imho remarkably blended. They were not what I’d expected considering they were blind buys, but like the 2 before it, 44 Gerrard Street does not disappoint me. While it wasn’t what I’d been anticipating, like the others, it turned out that I liked it more than I thought I would. The top notes are just majestic. It’s a freshie no doubt, with a citrus opening made effervescent by the eucalyptus and ginger. The note pyramid shows lime, but Atkinson’s lists “ginger lemon” as well as ginger. I’m not sure what that is, an aroma chemical, or otherwise. I Google searched this, but the top hits were ginger lemon teas, but I didn’t look far. The opening is just so sparkly. Absolute love. The dry down is amazing too. Again, it’s not something that I’d imagine would overtake those around me and draw in compliments, but I only wore it at home while working, so it may project more than I’m giving it credit for. Irrespective, the dry down is absolutely lovely. The floral mid notes just don’t hit my nose like many florals. To be honest they don’t strike me as distinctly floral, but rather to my nose, they bring about a more intense juicy sweetness to the citrus. Sure if I really concentrate my sniffer I can pick up the floral nuances, but It doesn’t quite hit like most floral notes I’ve encountered that do reveal themselves as distinctly floral. To me, it’s florals at a masquerade ball, their true identity hidden by a veil / mask of supporting / enhancing sweetness. The base notes of cashmere wood, musk, and amber are also done perfectly. Just the right blend to not become an overtly woody, musky, or amber dominant scent, they again support the juicy, bubbly, effervescent citrus helping those top notes stick around. This is an Eau de Cologne but performance in terms of longevity is quite good with the scent remaining prevalent just as long as many EdPs in my collection. I got a good 8 hours where I could detect the scent without “trying” to smell it. Really well done, sophisticated take on a freshie. Definitely immediately one of my absolute favorite freshies and favorite niche freshies. No regrets for blind buying whatsoever, and one I’d highly recommend!

Floral, creamy, sharp, fruity, medicinal, fresh, dense. Elements of traditional fragrance femininity and masculinity. You can smell individual notes quite clearly, yet there is a calming unity about it. I’ve never smelled anything quite like this. It resists categorization and that is precisely what makes it desirable: A summer fragrance that has a unique character yet remains pleasant enough for all settings. I read complaints below that 44 Gerrard is a linear fragrance. I think that's actually a strength with this one- it doesn’t lose any of its original character and maintains its structure for hours on the skin. Pretty impressive for a warm-weather fragrance! For those looking for something different and durable in the summer, give this a try!

This is an incredible fresh scent. Soapy but in a bright way. Amazing opening AND dry Down. It makes me feel clean and fresh. Very pleasant aroma that is totally inoffensive. Shines in heat. Very good performance for being an edc (it performs more like an edt at least). I first smelled it at Nieman Marcus. I went and Googled it. Not many are talking about it. I was shocked. This is a certified hidden gem. Get a sample and try on your skin.

Shut up and listen to me. This is Creed Aventus in an alternate universe. Think “Orange Mojito”. This thing is loud, especially for an eau de cologne. Opens up with an orange barbershop type smell. Super clean and masculine a bit more on the mature/sophisticated side. This is signature scent worthy- buy a decant if you must but seriously you can just blind buy it. Worth every penny.

I can feel it all day long. Which is fantastic considering the fact that it's hard for me to detect some other well known power-house fragrances i have in my collection. It's a beautiful fougere rose fragrance for men, barbershop type. Maximum respect for this eau de cologne which beats edt's and edp's.

tested it yesterday, i can still smell it lasts 6 hours but 12 on clothes i get a woody citrus orange smell, cant tell the rose. absolutely uniqe, didnt smell anything like this before summer day wear, nothing else 8.5-9/10 smell 7/10 longevity but 15/10 for an edc lasts longer than creed VIW

Atkinsons 44 Gerrard street is not unique og very complex, but it absolutely just works. The blend of fresh citrus and aromatics with wood and florals. Too me, classic fresh masculine cologne. It’s very gentleman like. very versatile and office safe.

I get the orange sherbet note from other reviews but it works and is a note (that I like) within the composition. Great performance for an EDC; one of my favourite fresh, juicy scents for warm weather.

Mmmmmm this is lovely! Sweet yet fresh fruits with subtle mouthwatering sweetness. It also has nice green and somewhat rose. Reminds me of Luna and Delina a lot, something in between these two.

Atkinsons fragrances often carry a slightly old-fashioned character. Their revival series tends to move between “history” and a modern sensibility. 44 Gerrard Street takes its name from the address of Atkinsons’ first shop, which is now located in the center of London’s Chinatown. In a way, the fragrance feels like stepping back more than two centuries. Its structure returns to a classic cologne style built around citrus, ginger, and eucalyptus. The opening is bright lime with ginger. The spiciness of ginger and the coolness of eucalyptus combine to create a crisp, sharp freshness, almost like the feeling of splashing cold water on your face in the morning. In the heart, rose and jasmine soften the sharp edges, adding a gentle floral layer to the cool opening. The base of woods and amber grounds the scent so it doesn’t feel too thin. The overall line of the composition is simple and consistent, fresh from start to finish, with a kind of understated English politeness. Although it follows a cologne structure, the longevity is surprisingly good and the projection is stable. It feels like a tribute to tradition while still remaining modern. Personally, I prefer it on men.

I get mainly ginger, eucalyptus, rose, orchid and a bit of jasmine. If there's amber and wood in here it's not detectable on my skin. The main players are a pretty potent ginger eucalyptus. In most male fragrances the eucalyptus doesn't hang around that long but here it sticks around forever on my skin. I'd venture to say if you don't like eucalyptus, you won't like this cologne. Speaking of cologne, this is supposedly an EDC concentration but it lasts a long time on my skin. It performs better than some EDP's. Nice stuff. Decidedly masculine. Scent 6.8/10 Performance 7/10

Nice fresh cologne with a 'herbal' element. Eucalyptus also features in Serge Lutens' Parole d'Eau, a similar style of freshie fragrance. The woody-amber back-note adds pungency and blends in well. These woody-amber notes (amber xtreme, karanal, ambrocenide and similar chemicals) have been rather done to death in masculine perfumery, but here they are suitably restrained.

It's been made pretty clear to me so far that Atkinsons isn't a brand aiming for a spot on the top popular fragrance brands, nor are they a brand that gets anyone thoroughly excited for their releases. It's just simple perfumery steering on the classier side, with a clear British creative direction. And honestly, I don't think that many people except for those deeply devoted to the brand for one reason or another would truly enjoy their style. And by enjoy, I don't mean "Yeah, this one is nice, pleasant", because that's how all their fragrances are. I mean truly drain bottles and justify the high prices some of their offerings have. But anyways, I mostly said that because I plan 44 Gerrard Street to be the last Atkinsons I test, at least for a very long while. And with this particular piece, I got some comments I would generally consider a compliment, just not when wearing this - "You smell like an old man". Unsurprising, though; as mentioned, Atkinsons has a classier vibe running through their lineup, and 44 Gerrard Street is no exception, but it's also not their best example of their core identity. Regardless, the opening is fairly nice - warm, spicy, zesty, but also fresh ginger shows first, taking clear control of the wheel. On the passenger seat, lemon candy sits which leans a little more on the candied accent than I'd like. But at least some welcome eucalyptus brings some lift with its camphoraceous, cooling aroma, but also mentholated vibe that combined with the lemony candy, it can remind of kids' medicine. But then at one point not too long after the opening, the eucalyptus dies down, the candied lemon takes a step back, and the ginger softens with a somewhat peculiar musty smell, less on the sharp accents of ginger and more on the ginger you forgot for a few weeks in the freezer. It could be due to the orchid at the heart, a flower I've never been too fond of as far as scent goes. But after a short while, that mustiness dissipates, leaving room for the rest of the notes that never truly push through. The florals at the heart are very muted and dispassionate, with a gentle rosy accent and maybe some jasmine hidden in the back, but rather lacking in overall expression. The base is also rather shy, though you definitely get some boring amber nuances next to some similarly boring and soft muskiness that covers a very gentle spice facet. Basically top-heavy perfumery, in line with most of their other stuff I've tried. Once again, longevity impressed me. It reached 12 hours to earn itself a 10/10 in this regard, which simply sounds wrong given that the overall profile of their fragrances is rather soft. And projection does prove that, although 44 Gerrard Street was pretty noticeable for the first hour, leaving a stronger sillage than I expected, hence earning me the old man-smelling comments. But after that first unusually strong hour (in which the scorching sun above certainly had more than a say over the perceived projection), it would go pull back and gently soften to a skin scent by hour 4. If most people nowadays perceive this as an "old man smell", then by today's standards 44 Gerrard Street would lean on the un-versatile side. But that aside, on its own this is a very easy to wear fragrance. It can do as a daily, it can do for the office, it can do even for dressier events. And well, if you happen to be over the age of 30, then all the more fitting, I guess. That's not to mean this smells vintage in any way. "Mature" would be the better word choice. A fragrance that doesn't chase trends and doesn't cram in as much amberwood as possible, for which it earns my respect. But overall, composition-wise, it's far from a winner either. I might not be the most enthusiastic ginger fan, but I definitely don't hate it, and although I haven't really tried many ginger-first creations, I do feel like 44 Gerrard Street would probably earn a spot amongst your top choices. It's a nice ginger fragrance, just a boring overall fragrance. And that's largely all I've got to say about the brand: as decent and simple as it is boring and lacking. 44 Gerrard Street sets out to become a unique, interesting take on a classical smelling masculine woody-citrus, however instead it just smells like orange sherbet. It opens with a heavy dose of lime and ginger which are actually good quality, it’s this combination which comes across like candied orange to me. The scent has a soft floral heart or eucalyptus, rose, jasmine and orchid, before settling on a masculine woody base. Unfortunately to me, this fragrance smells very one dimensional and linear with little to no development. As I said before it straight up smells like hard boiled orange sweets or orange sherbet. It’s synthetically sweet and intense with the ginger, while it’s not an unpleasant fragrance - I can’t see it being worn by myself.

I'm pretty lenient when it comes to modern, molecule driven stuff like this and also Atkinsons generally have been very good at developing these masculine all-rounders, however I find this one a little boring and quite charmless actually. Smells like a creamy ambergris type base with lashings of electric fruity/citrus accord on top, something I would usually dig but somehow here, I really don't. I can't really give any better reasoning because I could draw parallels with something like Moscow Mule by JHaG, which I could describe in equally vague but somewhat similar terms, and I like that.

Interesting one this. A bright, zingy cologne, designed as a gentlemanly freshy, ideal for spring or summer mornings. It's completely original (to me), but it has one fatal flaw. That rose note that comes in after the initial opening is just too heavy and makes the scent too claggy and floral for the first couple of hours. It's a shame because I really like everything else about it, but the rose kills it for me. It does make it very unisex though. Once the woody base comes in it does balance it out again. Performs well. If you can handle rose, recommended.

Refreshing zesty open that is grounded by the mid and base notes. There is a sweet note that mixes with the eucalyptus and it reminds me of eucalyptus drops. This is a very balanced unisex fragrance that you'd get a lot of wear out of, but I also wouldn't be surprised if someone said this was a room spray. Projection is high-moderate, sillage is moderate. Longevity about 6h.

I will never ever give a high score to an eau de cologne! What is the point of wearing this soft weak but expensive scent??

I don’t know, but the initial creative discussion may have gone like this: Let’s take Armani’s Eau pour Homme as a template, and perfect it. Let’s make it bolder, more assertive, grounded and self-confident, trading the powdered dandy-ish elements for a more reasonable, time-tested, practical sense of style. This is a man well-dressed, whom you wouldn’t call either elegant or stylish, because his personality doesn’t revolve around worrying about other people’s perception of him, but he is always impeccably put-together, and this actually makes him attractive. There is nothing groundbreaking about the aromatic citrus chypre, and yet it is mind-bogglingly difficult to find even a handful that are better than decent from start to finish. This is one of them. And despite the EdC denomination, it easily lasts 6-8 hours, close to the skin in the latter part, obviously. I have a feeling Bullitt would have liked it. Recommended without caveats, barring the price which I find is a bit steep at >€100.

Ok. A cologne .I was expecting fresh and fleeting. It is fresh but it is no way fleeting. It's a beautiful citrus scent. The note of ginger makes it bounce off my skin and when the sun hits it , it comes alive even more. It's a wonderful summer scent. Similar to Molecule +mandarin but the ginger note just elevates enough for me to recommend. If you like zingy summer citrus scents I strongly recommend you sample this. Do not be put off by "cologne" as it performs incredibly well. 8 hours and it really is punching, although nearer to the skin.

Eucalyptus rose dominant scent.. opens with the lime and ginger very fresh and reminds me of Issey miyaki l'eau with notes of tea taken from 24 old Bond Street to keep its atkinsons DNA. The orange bottle has a matte paint finish but you can still see through it to know how much is left and the black center logo is just a sticker that might eventually come off. Duration and spillage are both minimal it becomes a skin scent as soon as the alcohol evaporates. Good for office or gym use not overpowering safe smell.

Almost identical to bvlgari aqua amara , touch smoother and very orangey but not quiet as bitter with a nice floral backbone , performs great and projects well, this is a clean smell and very positive however it lacks sexiness with nothing dirty in there to offset its freshness, as a stand alone cologne though for a well groomed person it will have a charm of its own in a clean way.

Reminds me of a more floral, more unisex version of PDM’s Kalan. Definitely different enough to own both, but the similarities are undeniable to my nose. The floral opening is my favorite part of the ride. A true moderate projector....maybe even slightly above moderate, even for an edc. Don’t fall for that perfume strength listing bullshit. It’s all smoke and mirrors marketing.

Lovely! lemony, fresh, floral and only slightly sweet. Beautiful fresh, natural smelling and very elegant. I love this, I think this would be great on a handsome man and also would be nice on a woman. I will get a full bottle, likely will give it to my husband and enjoy it from his skin. Did I say this is lovely? Full bottle worthy.

It opens with a massive blast of lemon. Actually that is all what I could feel for the first ten or so minutes. Lemon, lemon and more lemon. Or lime. I don't know. But lemon nonetheless. After a while, when the lemon is gone, it dries down to a nice citrusy rose, that sits close to the skin and is not annoying or in your face.

Actually, it's pretty potent and long lasting, just like the 24 Old Bond Street which is also an EDC. Both are nice, and hard to describe as I can't decipher any specific notes. I'd love to read a review from someone who can write them well.

It smells like Orange gummy candies coated in white sugar. Though not too sweet. It's citrus, slight floral, very pleasing to the nose, nonoffensive scent. I love that it's long lasting. Very nice product.

Outstanding fresh fragrance. Beautifully citrus and well balanced. Totally unisex imo and incredible value. I’ve got a lot of fresh fragrances and this will be a fixture.
