Amber Empire

#1310 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a decant. This is a delicious amber, vanilla and incense scent. Virtually identical to Nobile 1942's fabulous "MALVS." Similar to Zoologist's more gourmand "Camel." Not as powdery and floral as Ormonde Jayne's "Kashmir" or House of Oud's "Wonderly." But if you like any of those scents this will be a hit, at a very reasonable price of $70. I love the myrrh here. It's just right. And the tea note makes it unique from all the other amber-vanillas out there. I note Jomashop lists it, wrongly, as a ladies scent, though it's dead center unisex. This is moderate scent that's car pool, elevator and small office safe. I think very attractive, definitely date night appropriate but okay for office wear. I just ordered it.

Opening: The opening is sweet, balsamic, and woody. The primary notes I get are vanilla, myrrh, sandalwood, and oolong tea, with vanilla and myrrh clearly leading the composition. Vanilla arrives immediately with a creamy, smooth sweetness that feels warm and comforting without leaning too heavily into gourmand territory. It provides a soft, rounded foundation that gently sweetens the entire composition while remaining refined rather than dessert-like. Myrrh follows closely behind, introducing a deep resinous quality with subtle earthy undertones that give the fragrance its amber-like character. The richness of the myrrh adds weight and warmth, reinforcing the balsamic tone that defines the opening. Sandalwood supports these notes with a dry, softly textured woodiness, carrying a faint creamy and slightly powdery quality that blends seamlessly with the vanilla. Lastly, oolong tea brings an aromatic contrast to the sweetness, offering smooth leafy facets with a gentle bitterness and a lightly roasted nuance that keeps the composition from becoming overly dense. Overall, the fragrance remains very similar to the opening, making Amber Empire a fairly linear scent throughout the wear. The most noticeable change is the disappearance of the oolong tea note that added an aromatic bitterness earlier on. In its place, the incense becomes more prominent, introducing a slightly stronger smoky presence that adds depth to the base without overwhelming the composition. Vanilla continues to provide the same creamy, smooth sweetness that defined the opening, maintaining a warm and comforting character while still avoiding a heavily gourmand feel. Myrrh remains equally present, contributing its deep resinous quality and subtle earthy undertones that reinforce the fragrance’s amber-like warmth. Sandalwood continues to support the structure with a soft, dry woodiness that feels delicate and slightly creamy, blending effortlessly with the vanilla and myrrh. The result is a calm and cohesive dry down where creamy sweetness, resinous balsamic warmth, gentle smoke, and soft woods carry the fragrance through its later stages. Performance: Projection opens at a strong level, reaching out to roughly six feet during the first hour and establishing a noticeable presence. Sillage mirrors that strength, leaving behind an easily detectable scent trail that reinforces the fragrance’s warm and resinous character. After approximately three to four hours, performance remains largely unchanged, with both projection and scent trail maintaining much of their initial intensity. Around the seven to eight hour mark, the projection softens slightly, settling closer to four to five feet, though the fragrance still leaves behind a clearly noticeable trail while moving. This gradual taper continues until the fragrance eventually settles into a skin scent somewhere between the ten and twelve hour mark. The overall result is a fragrance that maintains strong presence for several hours before slowly transitioning into a softer, more intimate stage much later in the wear. When to Wear: Amber Empire is best suited for fall and winter, where its warm, resinous sweetness and woody depth can be fully appreciated in cooler air. The fragrance feels most natural in the evening, when its rich and comforting character aligns with quieter, more relaxed settings. Its cozy amber warmth makes it an excellent choice for special occasions such as date nights or anniversaries, where its inviting and sophisticated presence can feel especially fitting. At the same time, the composition maintains enough simplicity to work well in casual environments, allowing it to transition comfortably from a laid back evening out to more refined gatherings. The fragrance is also polished enough to hold its own in formal settings, where its smooth blend of vanilla, resins, and woods carries an understated elegance. However, its warmth and density would likely feel a bit too heavy for office environments, where something lighter and more restrained would generally be the better choice. Blind Buy: Amber Empire is a relatively safe blind buy, particularly for those who already enjoy vanilla and amber fragrances in the style of MFK's Grand Soir. The fragrance stays very close to that familiar warm amber DNA, focusing on creamy vanilla sweetness, resinous depth, and smooth woods without introducing any unusual or polarizing elements. Throughout the wear, the composition remains consistent and approachable, making it easy to understand and appreciate if that style already appeals to you. The note structure is also fairly straightforward, which reduces the likelihood of unexpected twists that might surprise or disappoint a buyer going in blind. Price is another factor working in its favor, as Amber Empire generally sits at a more accessible point than many luxury amber fragrances, making the financial risk somewhat lower. For those who already enjoy this type of warm, comforting amber profile, Amber Empire will likely feel very familiar and easy to wear, making it a reasonable candidate for a blind purchase. Final Verdict: As a fan of vanilla and amber fragrances, I did enjoy wearing Amber Empire. The scent profile is warm, smooth, and comforting, delivering the familiar combination of creamy vanilla sweetness, resinous depth, and soft woods that makes this style of fragrance so appealing. Performance is another clear strength, maintaining strong projection for several hours before gradually tapering into a softer presence later in the wear. In that regard, it proved far more satisfying than my previous experience with Pirate’s Grand Reserve, which ultimately left me disappointed. Where Amber Empire falls short for me, however, is simply in its lack of distinction. The fragrance stays very close to the classic vanilla amber formula without introducing any particularly unique twists or memorable elements. Since I already own Grand Soir along with several other fragrances that explore similar territory, Amber Empire ends up feeling somewhat redundant within my collection. That doesn’t make it a bad fragrance by any means, as it is well constructed, pleasant, and easy to wear. It simply doesn’t offer enough differentiation to justify a place in my lineup, leaving it as an enjoyable experience but not one that compels me to add a bottle to my collection. Atkinsons is hitting it out of the park with this one. Fantastic soft and warm amber that feels like being draped in a mink blanket that's straight out of the dryer. Just enough sweetness to make it really plush without being edible. Unisex leaning slightly masc. Projection is moderate-high, sillage is moderate. Longevity is about 6 hours.

Sweet incensy amber, a little heavy on the incense in opening, bitter scent. The incensey myrrh softens and becomes sweet and lovely in the dry down, not for me Unisex

Thank goodness I got this for a bargain price. I love the smell, which is a well balanced and not too sweet Amber. But it is so soft, as to be almost imperceivable, and has no performance. Shame, as I love a few others from the brand.

Lots of amber, golden, quite sweet but not sickly. Reminiscent of Ambre Passion by Laura Mercier, but without the tonka and geranium. Not as deep or well rounded as Ambre Passion, but a nice pure amber.

On first spritz I was intrigued - a rich warm Amber seeps through which is unlike anything else I own. However then the strangest thing happens. The tea and vanilla jostle for position resulting in the mostly oddly antiseptic smell, the absolute image of TCP! However fairly quickly - ten minutes - that is replaced as the oolong starts to kick in more powerfully. The dry down is then a disappointing one note black tea, possibly with a slight Amber base, but not that you'd notice unless you were really trying. Odd and disappointing,

This is a powdery sweet vanilla with a combo of myrrh/incense. Leans to feminine scents IMO. Low-moderate performance overall. Nothing impressive.

This is a sleeper hit for me. A light but not 'airy' straightforwards amber, a hint on a sweeter side. The vanilla lends a syrupy rather than powdery or cupcake like theme at the start and that's what I always look for in my Best ambers. That hi-octane yet transparent sweet sugary note with the slightest hint of red fruits or hookah cherry. It's nothing like Ambre Naguile in case anyone wanted my take on a reference point. This is much more MFK Grand Soir but toned down and calmer even. More playful. It quickly turns more powdery, with hints of saffronic rose towards the drydown but the vanilla keeps the florals balanced and maintains a good part of that initial smoothness so it doesn't go full-on face-duster. So it holds a more regal and opulent quality as a result. The amber has rare moments where it deepens and you get fleeting moments of thicker resins. I find myself craving this over Grand Soir and Ambre114 (by HDP) actually. Great safe-ish pick me up to wear - but Boucheron's Alexandria still tops the pile of the Amber mountain for me. But try it - this might be the golden ticket for you in this overcrowded genre. The Bottle and (if you get the dark) juice belie their price tag. 'Cheap' and cheerful with no guilt. My rating: 8/10.

Love this one. Find some of the bad reviews a little strange. If you love loud in your face perfume this ain't it. Some words that come to mind: Warmth, gentle, beautiful, happy, golden yet refreshing, light yet rich, creamy, comforting. The reason why I bought this? The initial 20-40 minutes smells like bubble milk tea! Not in a novelty way, but just delicious and gorgeous. It feels like walking into the milk tea stores in Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. With the aroma of all the different selections of fresh teas on display along the walls in large glass jars, many vats brewing away, cups being poured and shaken, a full jug of fresh thick cream topping up orders. Delicious! Black assam and ceylon with fresh milk... I love it. This lasts for about an hour in total but fades out and morphs into something else - beautiful and rich amber and vanilla, gentle, warm, inviting, expensive, happy. Not loud or in your face. The milk tea shop still appears every now and then. Longevity in total I would say is about 5-6hrs before it sits very very close to the skin. You can still smell it the next day if you put your nose to the area. The dry down remains delicious.

**This is not a review - just an observation. Just by reviewing the "similar to" fragrances listed - this fragrance MUST be different to everyone's nose. Boucheron Ambre Alexandrie to Milk Commoditity to Bois D'Argent to LPDO. Now I really want this fragrance - my curiosity is peaked way more and thank gosh I like most of the fragrances listed.

Sweet incense, & vanilla myrrh. This is quite soft for patchouli based fragrance! I barely can detect patchouli, if there any at all, as i can sniff amber, myrrh, incense, and huge doses of sweet sandalwood. I am impressed actually as this is the 3rd scent that i like from this brand after "Pirates' Grand Reserve", & "Love in Idleness".

This is an absolutely gorgeous Amber. A man wearing this smells masculine, a woman wearing this smells feminine. It's not this resinous funky amber, it's quite smooth and creamy. I usually hate the term 'powdery drydown' on amber scents but...they pulled it off great here 😉 definitely do sample it, price is pretty good online too.

I agree, gorgeous when sprayed on a big warm blast of sweetness. Then the powder hit me. It was just what I was looking for. And I got some carnation notes in with the spice of the sandalwood combined with vanilla. Unfortunately, on me, this has no staying power. The basenote is a buttery vanilla toffee but just not enough oomph.

I agree with the other reviewers.... the first spray is gorgeous ! Then the drydown keeps changing..... you must spray it on your skin if it will agree with your chemistry. In my case , the drydown became much softer than the initial blast. Not bad, but different from the initial smell.

I love ambers. That being said, this smells musty, dusty, almost rotten. I can see it being okay in the drydown, but I'll keep to my Grand soir & co. No need to smell like a musty attic of a beekeeper these days.
