Deep Woods

Great male fragrance. Complex, non perfumey. Great for date night.

I had high hopes for this one, like I have for most Avon branded men's fragrances. Interesting, cool decanters (my 5 oz. bottle is the log version), incredibly low prices for vintage, and promising listed notes. Unfortunately, Avons' suffer from weak performance; I mean verrry weak. No problem, I carry around a small decant. Sniffing it in the bottle, this one smelled like what I wanted: nostalgic barbershop. But then it turns "pedestrian" on the skin and disappears extra fast. None of the notes listed stand out; it's just an old-smelling "spicy" mess. I mildly prefer Avon Black Suede to this one. I have Avon Tribute on the way. Hope springs eternal.

The citruses in the opening are subtle and dissipate quickly. Predominantly a combination of lavender and a more youthful, herbaceous patchouli. Some peppery spice, touches of cedar, oakmoss, and sandalwood in the base. The liquid has a greenish brown hue; this fragrance utilizes a fair amount of natural components. Unfortunately Deep Woods smells like the sum of its parts, and it doesn't last long. Absolutely worth the low price if the sum of its parts appeal to you. As far as Avon's classic masculines go, Oland, Everest, and Windjammer are all better. There's a bit more going on.

In the bottle, it smells like it's related to classic aftershaves like Old Spice or something bay rum. On the skin, I smell a kind of powdery smokiness that reminds me of incense sticks like nag champa. Reminiscent of florals without being flowery, sweet without a sense of candy. Kind of like wandering into a crystal hippie shop. It's a good scent, but is already fading and changing after 10 minutes. I'll still wear it when I'm feeling earthy, but I won't expect it to last. At 6$ for a life-size novelty antique pistol-shaped bottle though, reapplication isn't financially stressful.
