Mesmerize for Women

I was 16 when this fragrance came out, and I was selling Avon at the time. I thought the scent and the bottle we're the most gorgeous things, and it became my signature despite some of my customers insisting that it was too mature for me. So imagine my joy when I won a vintage bottle in a giveaway. I'm thrilled to have this again! I get absolutely no fruit or citrus in this. To me, it's ALL about the reisins. It's sweet, resinous, powdery, slightly woody and spicy, and enough dirty animalic that it makes me swoon. Early June in Haiti brings temps in the mid-90s, and this beauty just purrs! It becomes a skin scent fairly quickly, meaning it's not weak and doesn't have poor performance, but it locks on to my skin and doesn't radiate very far. Movement will circulate it, other than that, people have to be close to smell it, and that's perfect. It's by far one of the most intimate and sensual scents I've ever worn. Of course it's also loaded with memories of a very difficult senior year of high school, but even the memories are somehow comforting.

I owned this when it came out in 92. I miss Avon. I miss my local Avon Lady, she died several years back and I was heartbroken, she was a very nice lady. The Avon lady was part of the community and Avon sold a quality affordable product that was brought right to your door from a neighbor and a friend. I haven't tried any of their new perfumes but this old one was a gem. Imagine my surprise when I was out and about the other day and found this in an antique shop where I live. I asked the owner if I could give a little spray to see if it had gone off and she said yes. I was so happy when I smelled this powdery, amber, incense sweetness, it was just like I remembered. It isn't a full bottle it is about 1/2 full so I won't get to go crazy w/ it LOL but I am happy to have this in my collection again. This is a beautiful sweet, powdery, amber fragrance. Love, Love, Love!

Mesmerize for Women is my favorite Avon fragrance and one of my favorite fragrances of all time. Sadly, this has been discontinued in the U.S. It's been several years since I had a bottle and have wanted one badly. I took a chance and ordered a bottle on Ebay. I lucked out! I received the classic cobalt blue bottle as shown above and the original box. It was in great condition and smelled just as I remembered. Myrrh takes center stage in this perfume and I absolutely love it! It's spicy, smoky, balsamic, and woodsy. The perfect blend for fall and winter. It's such a shame that this beauty is no longer available. :(

Top notes; balsamic, rosemary and bergamot. Middle notes; exotic spices. Base notes; a spicy oriental scent of amber and woody notes. What I really love about the fragrance is that it is so oriental but not very heavy. It has an amazing combination of exotic spices, amber and woody notes yet it is very feminine and mystic. By the way, this EDT perfume lasts more than many EDPs. Sometimes this scent smells like a blackberry-chocolate cake on me -which I never complain because I love it-. I was thrilled to find they bought this one out recently. it may be a new formula but I don't mind as I don't know the old one. I tried a scented page in the avon book and loved it. luckily for me I won a new sealed bottle off ebay yesterday so shall update when Ive worn it for real edit.. just received it and its gorgeous! it seems to have a coffee note, its very strong and dense. love it! Edit. does anyone else think the new version smells like body shop amorito or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Why oh why are perfumes discontinued (or changed)?!? This is my personal favorite Avon scent, although I do enjoy many of them. Mesmerize reminds me a bit of Jovan's Frankincense and Myrrh, another discontinued perfume. It is not too sweet and could work as a man's scent (yes, I know they made a Mesmerize for Men, too, but I mean if that was not available). Avon is the best for fragrance layering, because they make so many scented products.

EXCITED! I just received three vintage bottles of Mesmerize in the mail! It was my favorite fragrance years ago, and it still is. The spices and wood and amber all blend perfectly on me, while the citrus notes gently hang in the background. I'm in love all over again. This is my signature. This is me! Update: longevity is maybe 3-4 hours, and if it is on my wrist and I wash my hands, it is gone. Still, it is perfect for the holidays.

OOOOH MY Goodness!! This is really very very delicious! The Myrrh is the shining note in this fragrance. It is almost myrrh essential oil. That is what I think of when I wear this. Myrrh. Myrrrrrrhhhhh. Roll ur rrrs. :) So wonderful! I am so glad that my little Avon store had a few left from before it left the US. I love myrrh and frankensense. Love love love those ancient wonderful delicious smells. So this DID mesmerize me!

A great fragrance that should be on everyone's "go to" list. A gentle, slightly spicy woody, very similar to Cashmere Mist. Perfect for any occasion, time of day, time of year. All of the great Avon's have a surprize: the honey in Occur!, the cedar in Timeless for example. A soft, warm touch of chocolate seems to be hidden in the heart of this one. It gives a velvety smoothness that few other perfumes have.

this reminds me of old times... i prefer this version over the male one... it's just much richer to me and last longer... luckily i was able to get myself this classic on ebay who's cleaning up their perfume line... it was 95% full i dunno... for some reason, i like womens perfume more... they always smell richer and pleasant compared to their male versions... obsession, eternity, clinique and so fort...

Mesmerize is one of my favorite early autumn scents. On me, it is all spice and resin without a hint of sharpness. It is soft and round and sits comfortably close to your skin, allowing you to catch delightful whiffs of yourself without overpowering or offending anyone around you. To me, Mesmerize is the ultimate fuzzy sweater scent, and I will always keep it on stockpile.

I just got the latest version (2015) and I smell peachy vanilla. Very beautiful fragrance. If you are looking for a smell-alike, try Katy Perry's Purr. Purr is not as intense as this one, but they are definitely similar.

So, if you've seen any of my previous reviews and Fragram posts you've read of my love for Avon's Cotillion cologne. A regular mini gift from my family's Avon Lady, Aunty Debbie. I love myrrh, sandalwood, and spices. Well Cotillion was canceled in the early 2000's, and what replaced it? The reformulated Mesmerize line did in 2006. Perhaps a little part of me is a tad bit resentful of this usurper, this pretender to the crown, but only a tad. Here's the breakdown: My bottle is from the first 2006 reformulated release and she needed a new atomizer head! No problem for me! First spritz; ah, initially a light citrus scent hits. The bergamot initially stands out, but is tempered with the slightly sweeter orange and apple and a hint of neroli and white florals. It's not an Avon fragrance without the powdery floral note, at least not until after the company was bought out. Hour two: into the drydown now and I definitely got a sense of the cypress and amber. The myrrh and spices are pretty subdued on me. Hubby thinks it's nice though. I am admittedly missing the OOMF of my beloved Cotillion though. Hour 4: aaaannnnndddd she's gone. Completely. Hubby is home today so I ask him for a whiff test to make sure it's not just me who can't smell it. Nope, she's gone! Time to reapply. First re-application: The myrrh and cypress stand out a bit more this time, but so does the citrus. Until the citrus dries off they don't totally harmonize on me. If this were a bit more citrus dominant this would make a decent all year scent and I think it works fine for summertime in the first citrus heavy hour. After dinner I reapply again, but this time I add in some of Coty's Vanilla Musk. Oh yeah, that was nice. It warmed up the scent beautifully and it just smelled very soothing. Both are cost friendly scents so it's great that they work so well together. And unlike a lot of my vintage Avon haul Mesmerize is still available. A nice, budget scent, inoffensive and pleasant, and good for layering. I say go ahead and try a sample out and see if it's for you.

Well done Avon. I've never smelled the older version, but this formulation smells sweet (more like a caramel sweetness) and I find it close to a gourmand scent rather than an oriental scent. To my nose, some citrus notes come out every now and then without interfering with the sweetness of the scent. I dont get powdery notes (at the heart), just a combination creating a warm caramel. In that sense, I find Mesmerize very similar to Body Shop's Brazil Nut, since Brazil Nut is also very delicious and it's the same type of smell (but Brazil Nut is more linear than Mesmerize and has a "burnt" caramel heaviness). This one is different than traditional Avon kind of scents and I guess Avon is experimenting with gourmands this year (when you think about the other recent launches). I'm not sure about longevity and sillage because I haven't worn it outside yet. I think both are moderate. In my opinion, Mesmerize is a price/performance winner.

I bought a vintage bottle, just like the picture shown here, off ebay. I had it years ago, and reviewed it below briefly. I'm wearing it now, and can give a better review. This is rather complex, and the myrrh is the real star of this perfume, at least initially. I've had it on twenty minutes, and the myrrh is really prominent. I wish I could remember if I used up my bottle I had in 1992, but I'm guessing I didn't. It does seem to get sweeter as I wear it. At first I thought it was slightly masculine, but that's wearing off. I do think a man could wear this, though. I'm sad to hear that there has been a reformulation of this. I'll have to smell it, just out of curiosity. Also, this is one of Avon's prettier bottles. Avon has put out a few rare gems, and I consider this to be one of them, along with Facets(another oldie), and Mirada, and one of their latest, named Attraction.

This is an extremely woodsy, oriental, and spicy fragrance. I still have a practically full bottle of this left from when my mother gave it to me as a young teen in the late 90's. I suppose i came to the conclusion that it was a more grown-up type of scent and even smelling it now, i think to myself that i can definitely only wear this on a night out. This original formulation that i have reminds me a lot of incense with vague hints of sweetness and warmth. It would definitely suit on a crisp, nippy night, making it a great scent to wear during the winter. This isn't a perfume i would wear every day but definitely one to have in the collection as it is truly a very compelling and mystifying scent.

Mesmerize is my latest purchase, and it doesn't remind me of any other perfume I know. I simply love it. I can spray it generously around my hair and clothes, and it's never too much. The scent is something I really enjoy this time of year, during the cold, dark season. This is cozy, warm, mysterious, softly and gently oriental with a gourmand twist. There is nothing fruity or green here, this is completely warm and soft. I would have preferred the bottle in the picture here, rather than my blue-gold-version. But it is ok, too. A nice surprise from Avon, with a very reasonable price.

This is a very sweet and charming fragrance! I don't know why the note of white apricots isn't listed here, since it's the highest and the best of this perfume. I bought it yesterday because a classmate of mine in the university was wearing it and smelled BEAUTIFUL! I deducted her fragrance was Mesmerize since she sells Avon products and some time ago she mentioned she liked how Mesmerize smelled. It is very femenine, classy and spicy oriental. I think if you like fragrances like Lolita Lempika's L or Britney Spears' Curious, you'll absolutely love Mesmerize.

I thought I did'nt like Mesmerize but since yesterday All I thought was I have to wear this. So I went crazy looking for a small bottle I had in a box were I keep those perfumes I don't wear often. I spray a little as a test. And I couldnt stop smelling my wrist all day long. Today is Mesmerize 's day . and it feels just right . It is mysterious and playful Like Samsara , Opium or Obsession that mysterious aura that involves it. Its comforting relaxing. I dont know how to explain myself. this how it makes me feel .Im surprice that I actually like it alot.

This is warm, soft and comforting. The spices in here give a mysterious feel. There is nothing sharp or strong about this scent. The notes blend together so that one particular note doesn't stand out from the rest, but the overall impression is one of mellow spices. I didn't know this was reformulated. My review is for the original version, in the cobalt blue bottle with gold filigree top. This does remind me of Night Magic actually. To me, Mesmerize seems a bit more complex and spicier than Night Magic, but on me, the two smell related.

This is for the '92 Mesmerize... Lovely oriental! Not unlike Emeraude, the notes of benzoin, myrrh, and a touch of vetiver stand out in the base, giving it an Indian masala incense vibe (as others mention). Subtle spices, sandalwood, vanilla, and musk. And... I detect an orange-blossom, jasmine, and almond accord that reminds me of Bvlgari Jasmin Noir. The citrus peel (orange or tangerine peel) adds a nice flourish on top- potent and decent longevity for an EDC!

I keep a small blue bottle around for memory purposes. It's the 90s formulation. The original notes were: Jasmine, Coriander, Citrus, Musk, Sandalwood, Iris, Orchid and Rose. It's serene and a little sweet, but in a resinous sense. Gently spicy, and very powdery. Overall it smells like a very gentle myrrh fragrance. Cozy! Unfortunately, it looks like it has been reformulated to a completely different scent...!?

I am so glad I purchased the vintage version. It is quite lovely. I detect all the notes listed above, and some velvety chocolate (very subtle). If the new reformulation smells like La Vie est Belle, forget it! I can't stand the fake burnt sugar smell (others call it caramel). OK, I have to respect the taste of others, but, if the original was good, why did they change it? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

it is back next month:) i already ordered a sample. i am reaaally curious about this baby (the notes are nothing like avon!). ill be back with my opinions as soon as I get my sample. i hope it wont be a disappointment like christian lacroix ambre edition (tho' i havent tried yet, i know that from the reviews. all the high hopes are now down lol).

A soft, powdery spice I didn't expect to like as much as I did :D Very myrrh heavy with citrus top notes. Smells vintage but not dated, unisex and able to be worn for multiple occasions. I wouldn't describe it as sexy but it is very warm and comforting; you could probably layer it as such if that's your vibe. Versatile, warm fluffy spices :)

i found a bottle of this at a thrift store on a trip earlier this year...it was one i'd been wanting to try, so that was serendipitous. this opens with a heavy dose of myrrh with orange and amber. the citruses stay for awhile then it softens and warms more with amber and spices. so warm and cozy, and i'm really glad to have found it.

I wore this one in high school a lot, and I loved it. It was during the time of Sunflowers, so my perfume was completely different and stood out. But a few years ago, I tried the scent again and it is NOTHING like I remember it being! Reformulations will ruin a good thing every time!

A lovely spice fragrance in cobalt blue glass, M. does Avon proud. Although there is a version for men, the women's version is completely unisex. Sillage and lasting power are average, making M. work safe. Perfect for those who love spicy frags but dislike heavy scents.

I used to have this years ago and I liked it back then. I loved the bottle and it always looked so pretty sitting on a dresser. From the listed accords it sounds like something I'd still like. This is another one I wish Avon hadn't discontinued.

This was my fragrance of choice in high school. I remember it as a delightful mix of woods and spices with just a hint of fruit. It made me feel more "adult" and a bit mysterious.

I have the new version,2014,and it smells like Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy, but with less longevity.

I'd been dreaming of eventually getting this scent and finally it arrived today. What can I say? I do like gourmands! But apparently not this one... After reading the description and the notes, I'd expected something deep, multi-dimensional, maybe oriental - as myrrh, wood and spices might suggest. What I received was a blend of sugar and vanilla bourbon, with the stress on SUGAR. After half an hour vanilla bourbon eventually had its turn but the sugar never left, while the spices never appeared. It's a linear and sickeningly sweet perfume, but if you survive the first half an hour, you might find something nice and cozy about it. I layered it with Avon's Vibrant Fruity on one hand and with Pur Blanca on the other and I guess this is it - a perfect base for further layering. I'll try with some rose scents later on.

*sigh I recently purchased a small bottle from the USA-and it is "purse size" and a small simple spray-that fancy dark blue bottle was not available-at all .In my opinion- it stinks-a horrid reformulation ! REFORMULATION! appalling...the (true) myrrh, jasmine, and sandalwood are all gone..no longer a mystical mesmerizing mist of allure...itś like a really bad Lutece now..in the way that Lutece has some conflicting notes-hovering in the powder cake around you ...Other people may enjoy this new apple scented mixture-it has variety within the scent, so, itś not "dull" or "flat", it can seem to be a bit floral, and sweet for sure, However- after the original luxury of oriental sensuousness embodied in the first formula-I cannot conform-or enjoy.

Dark, moody, totally reminded me of Niki de Saint Phalle and I was going to type that in to the space on the page here and see that several others think that as well. It is a spicy, masculine type scent that I think only works with some people's chemistry. There is a lot of resinous temple like scents going on followed by a hefty dose of sandalwood. My husband has the men's counterpart and that is beautiful and haunting as well. Cheers!

I enjoyed this very much when I had it years ago. I thought the notes were myrrh , sandalwood, jasmine, others.. The scent was powdery. I don't remember any apples or citrus ! I will recieve new bottle in a few months and review it.

I wonder if this is the same perfume that Avon has released this month. Bottle is similar just not much simpler. The notes do not correspond though between the new and the old.

Fragrance Review For Mesmerize Avon Top Notes Bergamot Apple Mandarin Middle Notes Spices Myrrh Base Notes Amber Woods Mesmerize in it's vintage 1992-1993 bottle was one of my mother's perfumes. It was so elegant in it's appearance sitting there on the dresser table. This is possibly the most beautiful bottle of any Avon perfume that has been made in recent years. It looks old timey and classic. I wondered if it was an Oriental. I guess you could call it an Oriental, and it's a unisex fragrance, in fact quite masculine on some women, including me. It smells like it can be worn by a guy as his cologne, but it has some feminine qualities in the fruited top opening notes. The sweet citrus courtesy of mandarin slices and bergamot orange give it a fresh delicious taste. If you're a girl that is big on citrus scents, the way this perfume opens with lots of orange should be to your liking. There were times it reminds me of Shalimar, but it's not the exact same scent. The citrus top, a myrrh and incense and woods. It's missing patchouli and musk and it's linear and doesn't become too complex. But it's an Avon. The spices are resinous, smoky, and there's balsam, incense and frankincense/myrrh. Smoky but not as heavy or dark as Opium by YSL. It's really a very wearable incense. It's nocturnal and even smells religious, like something to wear to Church. It's called Mesmerize so I figured it had to wear like a seductive sexy Oriental and I suppose it can do that. I do like the myrrh and the woods at the final stage. It's Arabic like a perfume found in the collection of a beautiful and exotic royal Arab woman in Dubai. The scent lingers and lasts all of 6 plus hours. It's a serious cologne and matches up with dark clothing, formal clothing, so I will be wearing this to formal dinner parties this autumn. It does smell of autumn and of winter. Because that myrrh and incense gives it a warmth, and it can be smoky, it's perfectly suited to colder weather in December and January. This is nice to spritz on with your scarves and coats. I live in cold New York (cold in the winter) so these type of warm perfumes are made for me. I like Paloma Picasso for winter but I can't always wear that one lol.. This is a gorgeous and well made winter perfume of citrus, spices, myrrh and woods. Kudos to the nose and to Avon. I am loving it.

I'm trying this one now. I tried this yesterday when I first received the sample - and this is difficult to put a label on. I tried this based on the fact that I have found some amazing perfumes by Avon - which most have been compliment magnets. Mesmerize sits on my skin and doesn't really lean one way or another. It doesn't take a position. It comes across like a strong powerhouse late 1980's or 1990's perfume, but it doesn't really commit towards smelling like anything known. At first, I wanted to compare this to the OUD perfumes that I have tried - Such as Black Afghano from Fragrance Unlimited. But actually, I much prefer the OUD sweetness of Black Afghano. Avon has Imari Elixir, Imari Seduction, and Imari Mystique (now discontinued) which I prefer over Avon's Mesmerize in the blue bottle. I have a feeling that this would be fabulous with the right chemistry. On me, it is not really blending all that well with my chemistry. The others that I mentioned are better on. You should try it, a lot of people really love this one and are drawn to it. This is ok, but doesn't really make a statement. I prefer the others.

No fruits for me...of course the amber and spices are all but emanating from my skin right now, but with a very powdery base, again probably because of the amber. Amber often goes a bit smoky-sweet on me, but this is a vintage blend (layered with the vintage body lotion as well, which I suspect is where the majority of that powder is coming from...) and often old amber will go straight to "powdery notes" for me. I have used myrrh essential oil in the past for helping with colds and sinus issues, and the smell of straight myrrh tends to be very camphoraceous. This perfume has a bit of that, but the myrrh note in this is much smokier, more "dark" than what a cold-pressed essential oil would be. I really like this, but I have to say I wouldn't wear it daily. It's got a real "belly-dancer with seven veils" vibe to it and I think it's perfect for a night spent between silk sheets with candlelight burning and Sade playing in the background. This smells like sex to me-plain and simple (not in a dirty way, but in a this-is-foreplay way). Great frag...honestly love it, but again, NSFW!

Voila, the baby arrived! Worn in a megadose -to ensure what I am reviewing for you- I am happy to say that Mesmerize is not a dupe or a smell-alike for anything per se! That's good news since we have a unique fragrance from Avon which can easily be a hit. Mesmerize is a lovely, smoky, gourmand oriental and it's distinctively different than La vie Est Belle except a similar whiff goes for the opening thanks to the scent's gourmand quality. Once Mesmerize settles on the skin, it is vanilla puding and incense. Notes above are not accurate for the new version, so it goes as such as I detect: Vanilla, Patchouli, Caramel/Praline, Incense, Sandalwood, Amber and Spices in a rather linear way except the initial mega gourmand opening lead by caramel and patchouli. That's rather a winter scent, longevity and sillage is so good. Mesmerize is *heady*, it envelopes you like a smoke and sure it deserves the name. But if you overdo, you can be mesmerized with rather a headache :) Recommended.

This was my mom's signature scent... before she stopped wearing perfume. It is a spicy, wintery "warm" smelling gourmand. I remember the original 90's formulation smelling very complex and evolving. At first, it filled the house with (as I recall) its dark, violet-y myyrh-y powdery sillage and then dried down into a wintery blend of spices and incense. I've always had some degree of synesthesia and I remember considering Mesmerize a "triangular" fragrance. I can't describe the significance of this really, except, I guess, that it "smelled like a triangle" to me because the frag. was so balanced. You could really smell each base note of spice and myrrh propping up some citrusy, balsamic notes. When my mom left the house each day, the enormous, heady scent would linger for about an hour and gradually each note would wane, ending with the powdery, woodsy note. I miss this.

Commenting on this vintage version as the picture shows. When I got it in the mail I was reluctant. That cobalt bottle was intimidating. Plus I tend to have a negative association with Avon so I went in without high hopes. Powder takes center stage. I still was leary of it after I sprayed it. Two things it had going against it - vintage and Avon. But alas something magical happened. It actually smells quite good. I do not get all the notes in the side bar. I smell nothing of citrus here. I do get some amber, some spice and lots of powder. What I get in simple terms is spicy baby powder. It smells very much like clean baby powder with a twist of spice. It could still easily be worn today. Soft, simple and pleasant.

My sister was an Avon lady when her boys were in school and I would assist (she was very good at the job, and it would take hours to alternately submit and pack up the orders). As a result, I got to see the "demos" sheet and would order things for her to show clients then for me to keep. Mostly I ordered fashion jewelry. I remember a blue and gold Mesmerize vial pendant on a blue cord. Lovely little thing. Too bad it was full of Mesmerize. Truly, this is one of the best Avon has to offer, but that isn't saying much. Are the notes there, in the order listed? Yes, but as with most Avon offerings they are shrill and alcoholic to my nose, with little change in the dry down. But it does project!

Nice myrrh-oriented scent that goes a touch "soapy" over time, but doesn't lose its niche-like quality. The men's version has a sharp and slightly bitter quality, probably from lavender and perhaps something else, but the myrrh is stronger there. A scent in between the two would be quite interesting, possibly the best of both worlds, but if you can find a cheap bottle and you like myrrh, I'd say go for it. Also, I consider this unisex. UPDATE: The slightly soapy phase doesn't last long and then it's more in line with vanillic myrrh - very nice!

Browsing my local Goodwill and BAM there sat two..TWO full cobalt blue early 90’s bottles of Mesmerize. 3.99 each. I almost felt like It was what some would describe as “an out of body experience”. I was rationing my last few sprays and was just that morning on EBay trying to pull the trigger on a bottle that was damn near 80 dollars. The Gods of perfume heaven shone brightly just a few hours later. I have yet to find another that does Myrrh SO right as Mesmerize, the new formulation has nothing in common with the original.

This is the fragrance I use in the place where "Black Orchid" would probably stand on my shelf, if I could tolerate B.O. I loooove Mesmerize. It has a real smokey, incense vibe to me, very much like Nag Champa, but then it softens with the balsamic notes kicking in and becomes it's own sexy-spicy scent. All I keep thinking about is how I plan on wearing this out to dinner to my favorite Sri Lankan restaurant in our neighborhood. It will be just perfect.

This review is for the current edition, in a lovely but impractical star-shaped splash bottle. The notes listed on the Avon site are mandarin, neroli, and sandalwood. A bright citrus opening. It's a light sweet and spicy thing, nothing deep or oriental about this new version, but it's pleasant and refreshing, without much depth. Sillage is light and longevity average. I would prefer the older Mesmerize, but this will do nicely.

A sweet ambery powdery myrrh scent once it softens (starts with a cacophony of bug spray and apple pie spices) if you bear with the opening it softens to a sweet spicy vanilla powder and is rather lovely. I like to layer some Imari over it to give it a bit more spice and earthy depth. My review is for the vintage golden filigree bottle, don't even bother with the reformulation and buy yourself something else instead.

I remember this one as a sweet fragrance with the hint of aromatic spices. I loved wearing it then but always thought there could be something more done to it to make it more enchanting just as its name suggests "Mesmerize". To me , the dry down was more sweet and less woody with a really good longivity. There wasn't so much special about the bottle but being blue my favourite, I adored it, really.
