Rare Emeralds

I owned Rare Emeralds back in the late 90s when it first came out. I still had an Avon Lady then and was loyal to the brand of my childhood. I remember wearing this and it being a unique perfume but couldn't for the life of me remember what it smelled like. My bottle was small and I am pretty sure I used most of it. Then I rescued 2 bunnies and then stopped wearing perfume for 13 years .... Then COVID hit and I have made up for lost time. Anyway, I've done the niche thing, the expensive designer thing and now I am looking up old fragrances on eBay and thought why not build up a vintage Avon collection. Avon really gave us good fragrances in the past. Excellent value for money. With all of that being said here is what I think of Rare Emeralds now ....... Rare Emeralds is a very green, citrus woody and herbal floral fragrance. Very cedar and geranium forward and I could see a man wearing this. The opening blast is Avon Aldehydes followed by a crisp citrus combo of orange, bergamot and lemon. The heart is cool, clean and slightly fruity white rose, jasmine and big geranium. The dry down is cedar dominate with some sandalwood followed by lots of Avon musk. There is a herbal dusty and powdery quality throughout the duration of the fragrance that gives the impression of tones of dried lavender and chamomile was used in the formula. I was thinking that this might smell a bit like Floris Rose Geranium and you can tell both fragrances are cedar, geranium, and rose forward other than that they are not much a like. Rare Emeralds is much more herbal, musky and powdery and has an Oriental character that is suited for evening wear, while Rose Geranium is more green, crisp, and outdoor casual. I bet Marilyn Monroe would have liked Avon Rare Emeralds like she liked Floris Rose Geranium. It would have been her fancy "green perfume". If you like vintage perfumes and are on a tight budget give Avon old fragrances a try. I think you will be very happy you did.

I am a child of the 70s and hated the smell of Irish Spring. Irish Spring had a very soapy artificial green smell. There was nothing woody, fresh spicy or floral about it. This unique fragrance is a woody/floral/oriental type, not green or soapy at all. Wearing it today and it smells gorgeous, sensual, unique, and if you put this fragrance in a Niche bottle it would get rave reviews. People just have a negative perception of Avon fragrances. Past Avon lovers remember the high glory days and worship Timeless etc ( great perfume BTW in vintage) or just think all Avon fragrances were and are cheap smelling. I have expensive all natural niche perfumes that have a somewhat similar scent profile to this brilliant fragrance. Excellent value for money, not only in originality, performance, and quality of fragrance. I hate seeing sooo many negative reviews for such a good perfume just because it was discontinued and because of its inexpensive price point. @gtabasso knows, her nose knows.

Avon Rare Emeralds is a luxurious scent. I am not detecting much woodsy, citrus or musk but a lovely blend of green, aromatic floral. It is an elegant, rich, sophisticated scent and I love it! So far I have experienced Rare rubies, gold and emeralds. I am disappointed in none of them. As for season, Avon rubies and gold are best suited for winter, but this floral, green jewel is appropriate for all seasons to my nose. I sprayed over 10 hours ago and it has bloomed even more fabulous throughout the day. Spicy and opulent, another Avon winner!

This was a gorgeous frag that was a one off, the notes I didn't think would work well, but did it!, for me this is not only the best of the rares collection, but the best of anything Avon has ever made. Wish they brought this back instead of sapphires

Completely unique! Like a woody balsamic citrus fragrance blurred with the edges softened. It is bergamot, geranium, musk and cedar with some underlying florals supporting it.

Opens with strong green geranium and sour citrus, and segues rapidly into a cedar bomb! This is not the cedar of pencil shavings, nor of hamster cage cedar shavings, but of a cedar chest. Dry, woody, resinous, warm, masculine, deep in tone. The sweetness of the orange and jasmine is soft, present, but on me the floral and fruity notes are nuanced, just enough to balance the depth of the cedar, adding a touch of sweetness, and lightening the heavy woody accord. There is a little spiciness as well, perhaps the geranium. The jasmine is lovely, not at all indolic, not shrill or high pitched, a very pretty, soft, contralto. The rose is almost imperceptible to me, and comes and goes in pretty, soft wafts. This is a very unusual fragrance, and nothing I would have expected from Avon. This is a challenging fragrance: strong, powerful, masculine, bracing, woody, green and deep. it does not smell like Silences, or Chanel no. 19, but it is of that genre. I like it a lot, enough to have purchased a second bottle.

I have got a full bottle of this perfume on ebay. I have not smelled it before I bought. It is unusual perfume. I can hear very bright geranium which gives some green bitterness to the whole composition. Cider and woodsy notes add some velvet finish what makes this perfume more refined. Orange sweetens the geranium slightly as well. Bitter sweet symphony alright. I have mixed feelings about this perfume. It is not comforting perfume as ordinary comforting perfumes could be. It is edgy and velvety, elegant and rebelious at once. It is dusk time perfume, sometimes weird, but that is what makes it attractive. Nearly addictive in small doses.

I get a touch of green at opening probably the geranium, which fades fast, then its a cedar, citrus with jasmine.. very nice as I dont like green at all... sillage is skin after first 10-15 minutes.. lasts 3-4 hours on me which is average on me..

Rare Emeralds is a rarity indeed, a women's release with a strange and somewhat masculine DNA. Citruses, juniper, and conifer in the opening. These top notes smell great, like being in a forest. They are short lived. I was expecting geranium, but the herbal marigold is a lot more prominent. The floral notes soften the woodiness. The base has a tree resin smell, an ashy, peppery cedar note, and woody musks. As it settles, the scent takes on an odd texture. Soapy, waxy, a bit like plastic. Avon likes to keep the formula budget low. It's most likely the usual culprits, aldehydes or soapy musks, perhaps a bit of both. Quite frankly this is a bizarre perfume. It has a balminess, and a familiar '90s cosmetic smell on the periphery, but it's difficult to pin down. I'm somewhat reminded of wood varnish and Irish Spring. ...It's unsurprising this was the first in Avon's "Rare" line to be discontinued. Green scents are among the least popular odor profiles, and this one makes no attempt to mask the cheap synthetics in the base. If Irish Spring is your choice lather, and you're on the market for a complimentary perfume; try it out. I can imagine the right man discovering this one and pulling it off. Not for me, unfortunately. Edit: Oops, my opinion is offensive.

Rare Emeralds is nice, it is growing on me - but from the initial spray, is not immediately striking my fancy as much as Rare Pearls or Rare Amethyst (Rare Gold takes some time to acquire a taste for it, it goes on fairly STRONG). Avon Rare Emeralds is definitely "green", you smell a woodsy and aromatic floral. This is normally not my thing...however, if this has the same properties as Skin So Soft with this aroma, there's a chance that this may be a great fragrance to wear when going for walks in the park, hiking, or camping. Skin So Soft is known to be a hiking insect repellant (more on this below). (I have experienced Rare Pearls, Rare Gold, and Rare Amethyst. All of these are great and I have reordered them several times since originally purchasing them over 8 years ago. I love each of these... that is what prompted me to purchase Avon's Rare Emeralds). I can see where some would say that this wears unisex, it is probably due to the woods and green notes. I detect very little musk or citrus in the blend I received. Yes, I see where others have stated that this is cedar bomb! Jasmine and rose are supposed to be features, but I really don't detect these notes. This comes across like a well blended bouquet with a woodsy cedar serenade. This goes on extremely strong for my taste, you'd really need to allow a half hour or so before planning to meet someone - otherwise this is overly strong. ------------- Skin So Soft is known as an insect repellant - (you would want to do further research on this and find out exactly which products have this effect). The smell of Rare Emeralds reminds me of Skin So Soft original, green and woodsy (which is a well known Avon product line which comes in an oil, lotion, and possibly cream)- so if you are drawn to that particular aroma - you could use Rare Emeralds on top. Youtube has a number of videos on Avon's Skin So Soft Oil and Creams used as an insect repellant...this has a similar smell, so perhaps this could be used when camping or hiking to keep bugs away (you'd probably want to call Avon yourself and speak with their product specialist phone team, they could tell you specifically if this has similar ingredients to the Skin So Soft which is known to be a good insect repellant). ----------- If you are really into cedar and this type of woodsy note in perfumes - you should also try Calvin Klein's Beauty, which has some really nice fragrance notes in the cedar/birch type category. Alien also has some of the same essences as CK's Beauty, although Alien begins with a much more purple type note at the beginning - but dries down to be a very similar fragrance to Calvin Klein's Beauty. In the dry down phase they are almost identical. (It would take a very well trained nose to know the difference in these two during the dry down). ------------- I just did a side by side comparison today with some of my fall/winter/holiday type scents. I compared this to Rare Gold and Far Away Infinity (both by Avon). This has the same basic chord range as Rare Gold; only is a bit more green...it is really lovely, particularly the more that I experiment with this and wear it. If you like Rare Emerald, I would also try Avon's Far Away Infinity. That starts with more of a citrus type blast, but as it dries down - it is really nice too.

Definitely vintage, but unique. I own many vintage scents. This is a very aristocratic floral, cold, strong and confident. It's an immediate floral bouquet on my skin, flowers sitting between cold geranium and citrus AND cedar musk. Nothing sweet here, nothing juvenile, for me nothing masculine either. Just a super elegant almost aldehydic chic floral of the older times. In the very dry down I get full on dry balsamic cedarwood. Love it

I was keen to buy this as I really like geranium in perfumes and there aren't many good ones about. Unfortunately, I'm left disappointed as the perfume smells dated, quite 80s and a sweet powdery scent that is musty and not too pleasant.

I really loved this perfume, for me the best of the 'Rare' selection. It has been discontinued for some long long time, and I cannot understand why. For me it was mysterious, mellow and sexy and Avon really should bring it back. ASAP.

It reminds me of Skin So Soft original, green and woodsy, like you would bathe with SSS and than use Rare Emeralds on top.
