Modern Woman

There was someone who described this perfume as “offensively inoffensive” and I laughed so hard because yep (even though I still like it)!! I am a sucker for a musky rose and a big fan of Pure Extreme by Micallef (for which this is an excellent dupe for, by the way). Rose and musk shine here in the heart and dry down, and I feel like the apple/citrus top make this a little sour and screechy. It’s a bit rough, it could be blended better - but for $10 at TJ Maxx, it suits me just fine. Good lasting power too for the price, about 4-5 hours. I would love to see a version of this with the fruit dialed down, and turn the vanilla and patchouli up!

I came across this fragrance at Ross. Someone had opened it so I got it for a great price. I think it is a lovely light scent that you can wear anywhere. It is pleasant and not offensive. It’s nothing earth shattering but I can’t stop smelling myself when I wear it. It is clean and airy.

A citrusy green floral that's actually really pretty. I only discovered it recently and just found out BR is discontinuing it. Of course! But on the plus side, it was on sale 50% off so I got two. I think it's great for spring/summer.

I totally understand all of the comments here-good and bad. Yes, it's quite synthetic and a little heartless - but I love it anyway. To me, it's a clean, not quite ripe apple and pink rose. The special thing is the faint hint of, what my mom called 'sizing' - the chemical concoction used to treat textiles (aka, that new-clothes-smell). This perfume smells just like a good day at a nice mall. I'm here for it.

Very straight-forward—crisp, green, fresh, and floral. Like you’ve just graduated from college and you’re wearing a suit, on your way downtown to an internship interview. You’re young, clear-headed, and practical. This is definitely a daytime spring/summer scent, but this one’s for the workday, not the weekend. It takes no risks, but it knows what it’s about—like the female equivalent of a nice aftershave.

This is bright and pretty...smelling crisply floral and fruity, but definitely with a prominent and lovely rose. All through the heart I smelled the rose, and longevity was ok- very faded after 4 hrs. Very rosy perky floral that sparkled while it lasted. Discontinued, I guess, but I see it at discount places sometimes.

A casual floral aquatic with a touch of fruit. The rose is front and center. There’s a slight bitter undertone, maybe cedar. Has a shampoo vibe. As another poster mentioned, it does smell like Versace Yellow Diamond when dry. I’m enjoying this sample bottle and will be purchasing a full size bottle soon!

Modern truly captures the modern spirit, at least in how I think perfume approaches were emerging at the cusp of 2015 and leading into our sensibilities regarding "modern" fragrances by 2020 standards - attempting to move away from those overly synthetic scents of the 1980s-early 2000s and developing to where perfume is progressing today. This seems almost as though its a green experiment providing a crisp aldehydic floral that is almost aquatic, likely due to the water lily which to my nose might be the strongest scent beyond the apple and jasmine - I think this note is what elevates it to a different level and keeps us guessing where it falls between perfume ranges. This was a blind buy for me at a Banana Republic outlet for I think $25 before I knew what I was looking for/preferred when the pretty glass and minimalistic packaging caught my eye yet for this to turn out to be such a complex and interesting scent was the most surprising and I am sure it would be quite the hit today if on retailer shelves instead of when initially launched. Yes, synthetic, cheap, and commercial define it and I know others really sense the musk and amber but for me its so fresh and any powder/musk notes are very light and produces an overall juicy and slightly sour fruity/floral sense before settling down to that soft clean powder. It has moderate silage and staying power. I agree with another that it could be considered slightly screechy/tart but it still retains a sweetness about it, I also pick up on strong apple and citrus notes, and the 4-5 hour time estimate is about right as well. While generically commercial and synthetic, the cost, value, how long this scent lasted, and how versatile it is for the office, an early morning lounge, or a more romantic setting, especially for the price, depth, and quality make it shine as a lost gem. Most striking is how it serves not only as likely an unwitting precursor to the contemporary "your skin scent" trend (think possibly even along the lines of Replica's Lazy Sunday Morning or perhaps even Les Boy Smells, though those are both presumably far more nuanced for Modern to be so directly compared as I do not think this was initially Modern's intention, yet to me it belongs to it and would likely be considered a dupe if it were still available) and additionally as both a clean, soapy, fruit-laden spritz while dually a sharp feminine-leaning unisex cologne (again, this perfume shockingly has me wondering and keeps me guessing!). I think its fair to suggest that it falls into a transitionary step between fresh greens/fruity floral and the more classic heavier musk/aldehyde options; its too deep to say its overly fresh, its obviously not aquatic or fully green, yet its too light to suggest its a powdery musk-heavy scent so it is a good middle ground for those not wishing to fully commit - that's it, including all the corresponding advantages/disadvantages: Modern is many aspects combined, all at once everything and nothing, leaving you feeling a bit lukewarm, not raving or disliking it, leaving it easy to forget but a simple day/year-friendly option if you can't decide or would rather not have to and reach for something classy, clean, and of course, freshly suitable for the modern age Yet, just as shifting modernity is unpredictable, Modern opens up so much possibilities that its hard not to like regardless of desiring a smoother or more notable blend or a scent with potential that was discontinued before its time

Something to reach for when you just want something light, fresh, clean, professional and inoffensive at work (or anywhere). I can picture someone in a white shirt, slacks or other nicer work outfit wearing this fragrance. An aquatic note is detectable. It's also a little sharp, however. Slightly generic, unfortunately. Good, but not particularly memorable. I didn't expect much and my expectations were met.

I find Banana Republic perfumes either a hit or miss. I did not dislike this one; however, I found it a little unisex for my taste. A man can wear this confidently without any issues. It is fresh with a little bit of sweetness, but I found it run of the mill. I wore it once and that was it, I didn't want it anymore.

Opens sharp and crisp and lightly sweet. It's fresh and nice; and that's the best part of it. It quickly thereafter settles to a, somewhat boring, fruity amber; the same base scent that's in many popular fruitchoulis. It rests in that bland sweetness for awhile. About 30 minutes in, I start getting wafts of sour/overripe citrus; and this is the loudest note projected. Citrus is a note that easily goes off on me; and here the bad projection is in full force. Gone, aside from from a very slight citrusy musk on the skin, in about 3.5 hours.

This perfume came across as too synthetic to my nose. Someone mentioned that it reminded them of a chanel type fragrance, and I can actually see why they might say that. It has that "sparkling" aldehydic quality to it and its primarily floral. I really don't pick up on the fruity notes listed here on fragrantica; however, it does have some green aspects to it. Overall, I consider it to be a daytime, spring/summer, work appropriate fragrance, not the best quality though.

This one's ho-hum, run of the mill and not remarkable in any way. A modern floral with average sillage and lasting power, MW doesn't stand out. It's an inexpensive frag and quite unisex, a bit sour at the opening and artificial later on.

I've seen this so many times in Marshall's/tjmaxx/ and Burlington and have read the few reviews on here but never took that plunge to buy it blind. Well since Burlington reopened recently I visited a few this past weekend and the one ounce of this was so cheap I went ahead and got it for about 7 bucks. The first day I sprayed a tissue. Then later sprayed my arm. I wore it yesterday also all day but today when I sprayed it on I knew for sure I really liked it. This has a masculine vibe and I love scents like that. It's kinda like a female scent with a masculine vibe rather than a unisex scent but I could also see men pulling this off. The bottle is really cute too. I've passed up the larger bottle in the past and im wondering why I never tried it sooner. I'm going to see if I get through the 1 ounce still liking it and if so I'll get a bigger one. Btw this is a clean scent kinda musky but a tame musk, I smell the fruit notes too. Can't really explain it but it's like an inoffensive clean musk. I recommend trying other BR scents as well. I have taken a liking to this brand even though it's a mall store and honestly I hate malls but their offerings I've tried so far have been pretty good. Next on my list to try is Black platinum from their icon collection.

The people referring to this as smelling unisex, or slightly masculine or crisp and green probably refer to Modern Man in a square bottle. I am not familiar with that one but the female version is a true fruity-floral, which I would say is probably more fruity than floral. Apple, apricot, sweetness and somewhere in the background maybe some white flowers and then musk. Inoffensive yes, and more suited to someone very young. This could very well be sold at Victoria's Secret or some other similar place. Very generic fragrance imo.

I'm following up on @lilbit's comment from May of 2017... I recently found a bottle of the early iteration of Modern for women - an EDP packaged in a square bottle very similar to the 2014 reformulation for men - that I purchased in early 2001. I'm very curious about the notes for the original and I'd love to know if anyone has those details. Thanks!

Regarding the original: I distinctly remember that the most prominent note of that one was sweet almond. Another note I vividly recall is white musk. Please let me know if the new one is anything like the old fragrance, since I really liked it, but somehow never purchased it(( which I now regret

I bought this recently in a Banana Republic outlet store. I would describe it as vibrant and a white floral. It lasts about 3 hours on the skin and maybe a little more on clothes. Great office scent, not offensive at all. If it was stronger it could fall somewhat near a Chanel type scent.

Was thinking about returning this one. Something about it seems boring but interesting at the same time. Not sure ... Maybe this could be worn at bed time - a nice clean sheets kind of smell. I feel like it will grow on me- smells classy as well.
