Sonder

Sonder is very sensual. Every time I wear it, I have people asking me what fragrance it is. In fact it has become my go-to gift for friends and family. Seems everybody loves it.

Sonder is one of the five launch fragrances of the Baron Bishop brand, created in 2021. The concept behind the fragrance tells the story of Palazzo dell'Arengario, which happens to be a fascist-era complex and forms two symmetrical buildings in Piazza del Duomo, which is Milan's central square. From there, you can watch people walking down the street, all on their own particular missions. The term Sonder is not easily found in traditional dictionaries and has different meanings in French and Afrikaans. In English, it means the realization that each random passerby is living a life as complex as yours. Hence, the name of the perfume. Sonder's fragrance is classified as oriental, it was created by Marie Salamagne and combines notes of bergamot and neroli, at the top; Rose and musk, in the body; Tonka bean and patchouli, at the base. It is worth remembering that perfumes based only on oil (as well as solid ones, based on vegetable waxes) tend to work very differently on the skin when compared to those diluted in water and alcohol. It is not difficult to notice the scent of the base – here, Safflower Oil – at the time of application and, also, some hours later, when the fragrance is already fading from the skin. Sonder is a light oriental that opens with the bright and fresh scent of neroli and lives off of musk. On the skin, it works as a sensual and slightly powdery layer – due to the rose note – that persists for hours and looks like a piece of the purest Chinese silk: smooth, slippery, and cold. It is not easy to notice the arrival of the tonka bean, but when the base notes emerge, the almond facets of this note connect with the chocolate nuances of the patchouli. The perception of smelling the furry leaves of patchouli makes me repeat the action of bringing my wrist to my nose a few times. And yet I feel like everything is under a musky layer of silk. Sonder is unisex, but it conveys to me harmless femininity. And even with the whole concept revolving around the city of Milan, I keep thinking about the young Chinese woman wearing an elegant qipao. On my skin, it brings me a feeling of calm and makes me want to try countless layerings with spicier fragrances. Sonder is simple and different, without having to shock with weird accords.
