Iron Duke

Oh boy this is smokey dark. This is what Xerjoff Don should have smelled like. First of all there's a lot of smoke in a tar, asphalt way. It's really bitter black. The blackness of this perfume is complimented by lots od black ink accord. In the first 15-30 minutes most of the harshest notes fade away and you're left with still, black inky composition, but not smoothened. Behind those there's lots of metal, like cold blood or the metallic workshop/factory with a eucalyptus fresh, sharp way I think. There really it something greeny fresh in the very back. The metal and ashy smoke creates a gunpowder accord. I get that they say by spiced rum, it does remind me of the Kraken rum, but this is first and foremost black, tar, ink, and metal. What is also a vital part of this perfume is the aninalic part which there's a lot of, I admit, bu Iron Duke is blended so well it actually smells warm instead of pissy. The original notes from the producer include saddle soap and the soapyness here is very noticable - my wife even called it a body balm - so it's a bit on the different sides of the spectrums - clean, soapy, yet animalic, black. The clean balm/soapy vibe reminds me of Amouage Portrayal Man. Only the balm, nothing else, don't compare the two :D It's a monster, ok? One spray filled my room, I can smell it all the time with my hand as far from my nose as possible. Two sprays Will get you through the whole day with everyone picking this up. The thing is a lot of people won't like it. It's not office safe, best for colder months, maybe nighttime leaning. Doesn't matter the gender, you need some character to lift this. Encre Noire smells like the cheapest version of this possible, plus it's way less complex. Xerjoff's Don should have smelled like this instead of that sweet skin scent bs - this is dark, earthy, gunpowdery, leathery, metallic... This smells like a revolver, black leather, ink, and tar with warm animalics and clean soap. Now, will I wear this ever, or buy the whole bottle? No :D. I once tried wearing it on my neck and choked myself a bit. @edit 17.02.23 almost a year later I'm sitting here smelling my hand, updating the review with a bottle by my side. It's good they make it in 50ml because I can't imagine wearing it often. I applaud BeauFort for not increasing the price just because the concentration is 30, not 20. If I'm to be a dickhead I'll only say the horse on the graphic doesn't look strong and war-like, it looks a bit, you know, not clever, let's call it. You know what I mean?

Got this as a 2 ml sample. Probably by far the second best out of the Revenant series, with Rake and Ruin being first. The opening is very unilateral and hard just as with Rake and Ruin. Initial brandy hit which evaporates rather quickly followed by very strong russian leather, lubrified with dirty engine oil with cigarette ash in it and an optimal dose of chinese tiger balm. Very well wrapped together though. Many people complain about the animalic note which I find odd, as it's blended in so discretely it's unnoticeable. This is Black Afgano's Medieval English brethern metaphorically speaking. If you like Black Afgano or Nasomatto in general, you will love this. Quality of ingredients better with Nasomatto though, as they last longer and have a stronger sillage. In my opinion this is a scent to be worn at night only and never in the summer or when the temperature is above 18 degrees Celsius. The moment outside gets hot and you sweat wearing this, you will suddenly stop smelling elegantly and you'll smell like an oil-soiled mechanic after a 16 hour work-day in August. Otherwise it's very elegant powerful and unapologetic, even more so than Rake and Ruin, but much more complex and unoffensive than Terror and Magnificence. Aimed at men over 30. I would wear this only with formal/elegant clothing otherwise you'd come off as if you're coming from a hot-rod enthusiasts barbecue meet-up. Alternatively, this is a very good scent to wear in church, at a laid-back funeral, during a pilgrimage or at a wake of an enemy. The scent evolves to its mid notes in 2-4 hours and loses its initial agressive smoky bark and you're left with a very pleasant and vulnerable, softened down version of Oud Wood from Tom Ford without sweetness. Final dry-down smells indeed like a gorgeous mix of horse sweat leather and some faint incense and wood tones. Fantastic composition!

#1325 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a decant. This is my fourth Beaufort and they've all been winners. This scent is every bit as good as "Fathom V", "Coeur de Noir" and a better than "Terror and Magnificence." Absolutely collection worthy with great quality. Now mind you, for years I expended 200-400 rounds a week at the firearms range, so I don't dislike the smell of gunpowderas some do, but I think a few reviewers are exaggerating the influence of that note here. It's not a strong note. Strongest note is the rum, then tobacco and leather. The gunpowder provides a slight smokiness and a hint of stone, like shale. I don't think most will even notice. I rarely imbibe in alcohol. It's been years, and when I did it was single malt scotch. Rum got big with the kids when I was in college, but I never found it interesting as a beverage. However I definitely like it in fragrances. Xerjoff "Cruz del Sur I" and Tommy Iommi "Monkey Special", Maison Margiela "Jazz Club", Initio "Side Effect", Armani "Stronger with You Absolutely", Kilian "Black Phantom", "Apple Brandy" and "Straight to Heaven", Bentley "For Men Intense", Bvlgari "Man in Black", Nishane "Fan You Flames", "Dior "Vanilla Diorama", Merchant of Venice "Andalusian Soul", Les Indemodables "Vanille Havane." I could happily wear any of them for life and you can add this Beaufort scent to the list. Longevity? Even the morning shower left a hint of it. Projects a good six feet for a couple of hours. A girlfriend said she could smell it at eight feet. So I'd go easy on this in close spaces. Definitely for men. I'm certainly in for a bottle.

Absolutely spectacular. Iron Duke, unlike Vi Et Armis and Tonnerre, was one of my favorite BeauForts off first impressions and I'm happy that it didn't only surpass my expectations, it shattered them. This is an excellent smokey, leathery and resinous tobacco scent that carries that same "don't fuck with me" vibe from Vi Et Armis multiplied by 1,000. I find the opening extremely interesting because the tobacco and leather are contrasted by a very slight, almost soapy cleanliness, as well as by an elusive mineralic freshness, which turns out to be the same as Tonnerre's "gunpowder" note but in trace amounts. Funnily I think this same contrast is what gave my mom a "urine smell" (in her words), which sucks for her as I very thoroughly enjoyed wearing this today. I have to admit something about this fragrance reminded me of Francesca Bianchi's Sticky Fingers but Bianchi's fragrance has floral and powdery notes accompanying the tobacco and patchouli, here it's essentially the total opposite. Stunning fragrance, definitely a strong contender for a potential future pickup. Performance overall was alright but I'm blaming my sample's atomizer for any sort of underperformance. Projection seemed to be moderate whereas sillage was more on the dense side during the first hour or two, after that it seemed to tone down to a skin scent, which is a bit disappointing but I don't rule out nose blindness. Longevity is great, it has lasted 8 hours on my skin with relative ease.

The Iron Duke is the refined gentleman of the world that Beaufort's more wayward sibling "Rake and Ruin" will grow up to be. R&R is a magical fragrance and I adore it, but would I want to wear it? The Iron Duke, however, whilst it shares some 'class' similarities to R&R, is at once more wearable and polished whilst losing none of the characteristic challenge of a Beaufort scent. There's the smoke and tar kind of scents, of course, and initially you wonder whether you've just sprayed yourself with some caustic tar-based wood preserver. But give it half an hour. What emerges, at least to my nose, is the most glorious aged leather scent - really deep. It's like old 'working' leather, if that make any sense? The smoke and tar elements are still there - so it's like wearing your favourite pair of high quality leather gloves, the ones you've used whilst fixing your engine for the last couple of decades. I love Clive Christian's C for men - which is a very elegant leather. I love Tom Ford's Tuscan leather with is a leather sweetened with raspberry I think. I love Memo's French Leather, which is a very soft suede leather softened further by a lovely rose. So I'm not a big fan of 'full-on' leather. But I really love the leather in Iron Duke - it's not soft, but it's not rough either. Just deep, dark and gorgeous. Projection is good and longevity above average - definitely my next full-bottle purchase.

I loved Tonnare and was equally interested what else BeauFort had to offer and this one didn't disappoint. The opening is absolutely heavenly improving on a Nasomatto type theme by just making things a little more grown up and evoking a time and place gone by. I'd say it's smoky but not in the usual and obvious way, and resinous in an almost gourmand sense but savory...if that makes any sense? The rum is adding it's booziness, the gunpowder works right through to the dry down giving an amazing quality and freshening proceedings with hints of earth, metal and greenness. Then the tobacco resides in the heart of Iron Duke. Notes which are all plainly displayed in a quite brilliant composition that dries down to a real and sumptuous leather but with that resinous woody quality there too. This is a triumph of a fragrance, brilliantly realised, well balanced and oozing with quality. The fragrance starts out fantastically and dries down to a mature and earthy smell, which I can't fault in any way. The name of this fragrance is fitting right from the first sniff....Iron Duke is not the sledgehammer you might expect and definitely shows more restraint that Tonnare. Both share the bold, refined and considered qualities which seem to be the calling card of this house.

According to Twisted Lily, a US-based online stockist that used to carry Beaufort, this listing is missing Metallic notes, Hay, Animalic Notes (other than the Leather), and a saddle soap note that is missing from the Fragrantica.com database (it is a particular smell of its own, I think it deserves a page). I have finally received my full bottle of this coveted fragrance. I was genuinely sad when I ran out of my sample vial. Everything other reviewers have said holds true, about ash, a shot of rum (and the smell of its stain), tobacco, and leather. This dries down to a very desolate, but pleasing smell on my skin. High quality from top to bottom, except maybe a few minutes of cheapy plastic during the heart phase. I wear it on days I'd like to feel a little intimidating. :) One spray is plenty to fill up your own nose, indoors. Two is pushing it. I agree with SkyeLightFetish, I'm not a huge fan of the martial narrative of this fume's marketing, but as someone who has never been on an actual war scene, it is a nice atmospheric fantasy. Easily the most unique fragrance in my little growing collection.

Iron Duke means that only a person of iron can wear it because it takes a great personality and the right occasion. We start with 100% pure RUM and TOBACCO and here I am in armor on a tower-fortress of 1400. My job is to guard the precious treasure of the Duke but, at the moment, I'm looking at the starry sky. next to a hearth which, slowly, generates small sparks that rise towards the firmament. -In the distance: Shoot, scream, the rattling of swords just unsheathed by the resistant linings in LEATHER, the thunder of the guns, the dark crackle of rifles. - At the fortress: The alarm sounds: horns and bells. Such as?! I'm in battle !? No! I do not want to find myself inside it! I do not want to fight! A dear friend saves my life by sacrificing his. I feel so much anger, revenge, rancor. That's enough! I take my pistol and extract the ivory horn with the little one inside that triggers the cruel device: GUNPOWDER. In unison, everyone, together we cry, pierce, break, we destroy every human, animal or immaterial ambition. So much death and destruction for what? To defend our Duke! End. Fragrance: 9.5 / 10 Persistence: 10/10 Special features: Gunpowder. In a word? BOOM!

Starts with a strong boozy note, and morphs into a deep, rich, smoky, opulence that is redolent of smoke-filled men's clubs of a bygone age, when Britain was still 'Great' and Napoleon skulked and moaned in defeated solitude on the island of Saint Helena. You can get a sample from the official company website, and I strongly advise that you do. The fragrance, like the Iron Duke himself, is a loud, proud, bold, brash, winner. To experience it is to reconnect with the somnambulant masculine defiance of a bygone age. Can you feel the stirrings of reconnection with the glorious ancestors of the heroic past? I feel it. I feel it in the air, in the mood of the Brexit country, the scent of the past re-igniting a new age of self-reliance, optimism and pride. Britain is freeing itself from the chains of the continental tyrant once again. Petty continental collectivists come and go, but Britain is forever. Our little island will be ‘Great’ again. In a smoke filled room of eternity the Iron Duke watches over us, raises his glass, roars a defiant toast, and launches Britannia into a future as proud and heroic as the celebrated, glorious, triumphant past.

A very interesting fragrance. Closing my eyes I find myself in the times of the old American west. I am walking up to an old weathered barn. Opening the door I am overwhelmed with the odors withing the barn. The most powerful being the piles of gunpowder that line walls. A group of men look up at me from their table where they are playing cards, drinking rum and smoking crude cigars. Lanterns flicker in the barn and light dances off of the saddles piled up in front of me. These scents mix together with the underlying odor of the animals that used to live in this barn. The men draw their guns from their well worn leather holsters and point them at me... Yes, I get the sense of impending danger from this scent.... or a night out with the boys in the old west... depending on if you are friend or foe... ID is a high quality scent that has great projection and longevity on my skin. I see this as much more of a masculine scent than feminine scent. It works better in causal attire, but I can wear this in a suit. Bottom line: This one is worth a sample.

What I get is a combo of round indian oud-forward note - barnyard-ish but not fecal - and birch (giving the impression of a horse stable or a tannery) supported by an indolic tuberose, immortelle flower, and smoky accord trio (giving an impression of gunpowder). Some added spices in the background may remind of tobacco, and here again, a subtle vanillic palo santo note will round the edges, without falling into the unisex territory like in Rake&Ruin. No news of the whisky though, and that's good news for me since the boozy notes are not my favourite thing. Great performance. Funnily enough, it's here a demonstration of how the pyramid strongly influcences the reviews, since no one has cited the strong oud note, in spite of how potent it is. This is the answer of Beaufort to other leather fragrances like Dior Leather Oud and Montale Aoud Cuir d'Arabie. And what an answer!! My favourite from this house, together with Rake&Ruin. Superb! At first spray I knew I was in for something special, it's tobacco notes is indeed nuclear and on top of that it's more of a chewing tobacco/snuff smell than pipe tobacco. This unique note is slightly sweetened by the liquor and based with a very realistic leather and a slight amount of oud. I don't get the metal notes which is disappointing, but just these notes alone shine together creating a strange yet enjoyable aroma. The only disappointment is the longevity isn't nuclear to go with the nuclear projection. I got a good 4 to 6 hours with 2 hrs projection off my initial spray. Now I haven't committed to a full wearing yet, but the freshie I sprayed on my opposite hand is still going strong, while this has fizzled out and can only be smelled extremely close. Shocking as I expected this to last eternally based on the notes. Overall I go e this an 8.5 out of 10 due to poor longevity. Elsewise this is a masterpiece.

Wow I like this one much better than Coeur De Noir 🖤. The slightly animalic leather and the booziness are impeccable here 🥃 ♨️The saddle soap note listed by the brand, along with the metallic notes also play a role here with the hay supporting the animalic leather. I wish the leather was more animalic though. Animalic notes bring that carnal sexy allure that awakens our basic instincts which are still primal despite how much we evolved as a species 🐆 I'd say the star of the show here is the boozy accord (listed as rum and bourbon on the official brand listing) supported by the leather accord. Definitely a dark niche masterpiece 🖤 Imagine yourself being a midieval knight riding his horse 🐴 in full metal armor, and you ride back to your village where a damsel gives you a drink to toast your victory by the village bonfire 🔥 🥃 ⚔️ this is the feeling of this fragrance. Thought it was best to give this a good wear for a few days before commenting again. First up, this is a powerhouse drop. Unapologetically smoky, boozy, and slightly sweet (during the dry down). This juice bangs hard. I’ve a couple of Amouage that can knock the roof off a house, but this thing is nuclear. Seriously, 1-2 sprays is enough. Even then, your neighbours will be closing their windows. Has a touch of Carner’s Sandor 70s about it, but without the barnyard dry down. This is much more pleasant and wears a lot better. Projection: Enormous Longevity: Easily 10-12 hours off 2 sprays Occasion: Dungeon parties. Possibly funerals. Music: Slayer’s Hell Awaits Character: The Undertaker Clothing: Chaps and whips It’s hard to describe this scent. If you’re into wearing juice on your own for enjoyment, this is one you’ll want to own. Oddly intoxicating and enjoyable, too, if you like the darker vibes.

I've been curious about this and almost bought it blind for a great price. Testing out an official house sample, and I wish I would have bought it blind. The opening is saddle leather, a little booze and saddle soap. It smells devine. Shortly after it's joined with hay, horses, and metal chain mail.It's tough to describe, but the best way I can approximate it is that it smells like a saddle shop inside a medieval museum. The saddles are not all new, some of them are worn and have the smell of the animals and the outdoors with them. Fantastic execution and wonderful artwork. Iron Duke is a winner on every level. It's unique, interesting, uses quality oils and is transportive. But be warned, it smells also like actual horses 🐴 This is not for the bubble gum or tonka crowd, this is a medieval journey. Scent 8/10 Performance 8/10

SOTD/Testing Beaufort's Iron Duke, which was launched last weekend at PITTI. Appropriate, as today marks the anniversary of The Iron Duke's death. This is the first scent that I have had the opportunity to try from Beaufort, and I'm well impressed with it. People have said that it's quite reminiscent of Guerlain's classic Habit Rouge, and I must admit, the leather note in Iron Duke does give that impression. But Iron Duke, is much more that just a leather scent, there's guns, the wood from the ships, gunpowder. To me, it's what his private study at No1 London, or Apsley House as it is more well known, would have smelled like. It's a scented holographic image of the Duke himself. A big thank you to Bloom Perfumery in London for sending the sample out so quickly.

I had a great opportunity to sample full Beaufort line at one divinely stocked niche shop in Trier, Germany. By far the most wearable of the bunch, yet still unapologetic and unique. It smells like a worldly sophisticated gentleman who does not care, because he has it all. I call this style of perfumery a "clean dirty" and it makes for the most interesting pieces of my collection. I cannot say I smell particular notes, which is always a sign of skilled perfumery. There is a spicy feel at the start, which turns into this fuzzy warm animalic furball that envelopes you in the light familiar sweetness of human skin. For me this is almost bordering with sexual arrousement. Instabuy and I just hope I'm not the only one feeling this way about the fragrance.

Not at all what I was expecting. The balance between rugged and wearable here is fantastic. First thing that came to mind when I smelled it was HDP 1740 Marquis de Sade, but this is definitely it's own thing. Very somber leather dominant fragrance with liquor, a mineral gunpowder note, and pipe tobacco providing support. I'm pretty sure there's a touch of some sort of floral in there adding some sweetness, but listing it probably would've detracted from the manly mission statement going on here. The blending is awesome, though. Definitely an autumn/winter thing, but it's much easier to wear than I expected based on some of the comments. Two thumbs up from me.

Very masculine, tough, dry. The start is like a horse runaway with aromas, all coming out at once, with a slightly soapy citrus touch that is ahead. As it dries, the leather comes out, a soft and delicious leather, together with a dry pipe tobacco, at the base some notes of alcohol, something sweet, which in my head are interpreted as rum. This proposal is my favorite of the brand, it is elegant and powerful, for me nothing difficult to wear on cold days and that I have to send a strong message. Uniqueness: high Scent: 8/10 Sillage: medium/high Longevity: 6-7h

This one took a while but I ended up loving it. I got a sample months before actually trying it on my skin, but the moment I did I fell in love. It's dark, harsh, masculine, and very poignant. Incredibly unique. It fills up the room with just 2 sprays and it lasts forever, I was still smelling it on my hair a full day after applying. It's definitely a cold season fragrance, the summer heat in Europe, especially in more humid areas like those I'm from dulls it down severely. Would totally recommend it!

Loved it at first smell. It is a safe blind buy ONLY if you're into animalics. Would describe it as a black warhorse that's smoking a ciggie and is about to take a shower, absolutely all notes are present. Opening has some alcohol notes in it, like rum or whiskey, very bold and aggressive, then dries down to a "soapy" animalic ashtray. Definitely far from unwearable and/or artistic fragrances. Very manly and masculine. Scent: 10/10! Projection could be a bit better, although longevity is amazing.

I don't get what everybody's talking about- battlefield etc. On me it's the smoothest, warmest cosiest leather. Like a really smooth amber probably would be for somebody that likes sweeter things. It's the second best leather I've tried, and absolutely the smoothest. (My number one is Anna Zworykina Cuir de Russie, but that one has a lot more personality. And magic. And progression.) It doesn't sound so great, the way I put things, but I really do like this one a lot and bought a bottle of it.

God, this one is very good. On my skin, it starts strongly aromatic and green, then it darkens to become more fougère, woody and leathery. After a couple of hours, it settles to become a strong yet clean musky scent, so well blended that I really can't tell what's making it so beautiful. Probably the most mass pleasing fragrance of the line, not scary at all (it's not Tonnerre, which I love btw), mostly manly IMO, for brave people like all BL creations!

Fabulous boozy, smoky, leathery scent. The opening, like other Beauforts, doesn't pull any punches. Strong and very boozy, almost heady to begin with, it does begin to settle after half an hour or so. It then develops into this smoky and slightly sweaty leather. Lasts an age, quite strong projection, but you really, really don't want to overspray this. Not for faint of heart and certainly not a blind buy, but a wonderful experience.

Iron Duke by BeauFort London – 10/10 My favorite from BeauFort by far. I don’t really like most of their other scents maybe Acrasia but this one really stands out. You get a strong rum note in the first hour, then it shifts into something that smells exactly like an old room where people have been smoking for years. It sounds weird, but it’s oddly comforting. Also, it lasted two weeks on my jacket

A clean, well cared for human infant, recently powdered with sweet talcum sits on an oversized, deeply-scratched hardwood table, which was thinly re-lacquered a week ago. The infant happily wears a suit of new leather armour à la Dungeons & Dragons. The leather pieces are fused together using large rough-edged steel rivets, blackened by some gunsmith attempting a side-hustle.

Actually there are 14 notes, not 4. Intoxicating pleasure. Bold and robust. This basically smells like the paintings of Paolo Uccello - The Battle of San Romano. There are three of them, one is in London, and I know for sure that when I get to this city, I will first buy the Iron Duke and then go to the National Gallery for a full immersion.

This is one of the few perfumes where I can pick up on each of the individual notes. It's great storytelling. It's very masculine, but I think I'm right on the edge of being able to pull it off if I wear the right outfit, as a cis woman. I love those stanky animalic notes hiding behind the booze, leather and smoke - and so does my partner.

Amazing. Dark, super masculine boozy leather with smoke and gunpowder. It lasts forever and dries down warmer, softer and more tobacco heavy. The top notes can be quite challenging for those of a nervous disposition but if, for some bizarre reason, you don't love them, just wait half an hour and you'll be hooked.

Holy smokes. I’ll be back to write a proper review once my head’s cleared. Sandor 70s vibe to begin. I’ll give those who made the connection credit, but this dries down way better. Not as animalic. But, wow, what a punch to the senses. I’ll be back.

I love the projection of these. Everywhere I go, tehy always turning heads every direction where this scent comes from. Ngl, I love smelling like Iudex Gundyr. 10/10 Would recommend, but not for blind buy, it is a really hard smelling frag.

this is what a real men should smell, very gun-powdery and slightly boozy, the best scent for autumn (night in special). The performance is very good ! Does not smell with anything listed above. For me is unique.

While wearing Iron Duke i feel invincible, sexy and confident. On one hand it's classy and sophisticated on the other it's dirty and complex. It's definitely a statement and a true work of art. Chapeau bas!

I love it, I can't express the smell, but what I can say that this gives the gentleman vibe, lasts 24-ish hours, not a linear smell it develops with time.

Smells fantastic and is super wearable, contrary to most others from the brand. Getting a lot of the same aroma chemical used in gucci guilty absolute.

On my girlfriend this dried down to a really delightful, realistic skank. Incredibly vaginal in the best possible way. I wouldn't wear this to work!

Linear smooth and silky leather.

Had sort of a mixed experience with this one—on the surface this is much less controversial than Tonnerre. I think this is a lot more wearable and sort of a crowd-pleaser, which honestly sort of disappointed me, considering the reviews said some pretty adventurous things about it (then again, seeing as I don't find Tonnerre as daunting as most people make it out to be, maybe it's just my tastes). But at the same time this is a *very* masculine scent, which initially made me a little hesitant about it, as someone who I tends to prefer androgynous-masc-leaning scents—sometimes I sort of get imposter syndrome wearing stuff like this, which no one's fault but my own. It feels like I met a handsome British gentleman at the airport and stole away with his cologne. It has a sharp opening, bold, aggressive—not in the violent sort of way, but the tactical one. This is for someone in charge of things. I sort of feel like this cologne puts too much faith in me, but that’s my own fault, too. I’m mostly getting tobacco and leather at the opening, led by the sharpness of the alcohol, and there’s a little bit of bitterness. But on drydown it started to grow on me a bit. It has a somewhat more neutral, clean scent that I assume is the saddle soap—for a short while it almost reminded me of sunscreen a little bit, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I’ve also been catching a little bit of caramel-y sweetness here and there—maybe the bourbon, or just an effect of the leather, and the spice notes give it a sort of zingy warmth, like swallowing gin. I'm not sure how but something about it does remind me of my short time in London, which I suppose is appropriate. By the second half of the day I started feeling more like I *was* the handsome British gentleman at the airport. However, I wish it was more adventurous. I wish I was smelling more of the base notes; specifically I'd like the hay and the gunpowder to come through more—I think a smoky note would really round this out but I haven't been getting much of it. I really don't feel like I'm getting the animalic notes, which other people have gone as far as to complain about the strength of, so I don't know what's going on there. I think if I was getting more of all that it would really elevate it to something complex, but as of now I feel like it's honestly not all that daring, which I have heard from others, so at least I'm not alone. Overall, a nice scent, definitely wearable—good for if you need to feel like you're in a position of authority. It's a commanding scent, I'll give it that. Also, great longevity; I did 2 sprays in the morning and was still catching whiffs of it 12 hrs later. But I was looking for more weirdness and I've yet to find it.

Another explosively aggressive volley of fire from Beaufort, though it's not half as weird as some of the others and sails (just a very little) closer to the mainstream. Bold and bombastic, but it doesn't suffer faint hearted wearers gladly. Really pungent rum & gunpower open, with the leathery reek deepening hour on hour to give an expansively confident, butch, rawhide feel to the thing. Truly the smell of a flagwaving imperialist kind of guy. (But a brave and lovable one rather than an outright oppressor.) Note that this is NOT a 'gentlemen's club' leather - rather, a seriously macho men's bar leather. It's quite a roughneck in its way, though not nearly as hostile as Tonnerre. I love rough stinky leather scents but this one was just one shade or two too harsh for me - and worst of all - one end of the leather shaded into a really rather aggressive smell of urine - not sexy/animalic/civet/catpee, more like a dank stone passageway outside a pub on a weekend. That sounds horrible, but overall this really isn't - it's butch as you can imagine, full of real character and punch - yet it's still really not for the nervous nellies and definitely not for a blind buy. Obviously as a female user I'm probably not in the desired demographic for this one anyway. Give it a go if you're willing to fight your corner - I can imagine it stiffening any man's resolve!

I tested Iron Duke specifically looking for a fragrance with a gunpowder scent. It opens with a subtle metallic/smoky scent that is surprisingly fresh. It quickly loses that and dries down to a lightly sweet and boozy leather fragrance with a touch of hay. The hay scent doesn't stay long and you're left with a really nice boozy leather. Really didn't get much gunpowder. What was there was really buried and didn't last long. Totally masculine; to call this unisex is ridiculous. Longevity is very good, at least 10 hours for me with good sillage the first hour or two. Out of the "Reminds me of", I'd say Iron Duke is closest to Cruz del Sur I but definitely not the same. I find Cruz del Sur I to be superior - a richer and deeper fragrance. Iron Duke is nothing like Don, Jacomo de Jacomo, T-Rex or Pasha Noir Absolu. Iron Duke is a like.
