EN. A bold and unforgettable olfactory experience Rake & Ruin by BeauFort London is a perfume that leaves no room for banality. From the very first drop, you are transported into a world full of contrasts, where dark and smoky notes intertwine with an explosion of spices and metallic hints, creating an aroma that evokes the atmosphere of a billiard room after an exclusive event. Its composition is deep and layered, with notes of juniper and leather accents blending into a boozy heart and a base of smoky woods. This combination gives the perfume a unique elegance and a strong character. It is perfect for those seeking something unconventional, suited to a strong and confident personality. One of the most fascinating aspects of Rake & Ruin is its evolution on the skin. Initially intense and spicy, it softens over time, revealing delicate shades of musk and woods that make it extremely sophisticated. It is ideal for special evenings, elegant events, or moments when you want to leave a lasting impression. The longevity is extraordinary, with a sillage that leaves a persistent and intriguing trail, capable of capturing attention without ever being overpowering. I have no idea what people think of me when I wear it, but frankly, I couldn’t care less. Rake & Ruin is not for everyone, but it is perfect for those who want a perfume that tells a story and makes a statement of style. On me, I find it very attractive, and I believe it all depends on how your body absorbs it and then transmits it to the world. It’s a fragrance that accompanies me in significant moments, reminding me that a perfume can be much more than just an accessory: it is an olfactory signature that speaks about who we are. IT.

I googled Inexcusable Evil to see if there were any bottles on ebay or other similar sites and Beaufort was displayed amongst other items and caught my attention. I then went and got a Discovery sample pack and this was in it. I sprayed one small puff from a 2ml vial on my forearm and bloody hell..... The opening is utterly brutal, offensive, unbearable, opressive screams in your face. It's an avalanche of overwhelming bleeding cilantro that chokes you, irritates your nostrils and for a few good minutes after smelling it your nose is rendered ineffective. There is nothing else but freshly chopped cilantro or dill smells that invade, rape your nose and fry your brain and you hate yourself for having a nose and not being into other hobbies such as opium abuse and defenestrations. Some good minutes later, around 5-7 mark the offense starts to lose steam and you slowly regain the ability to smell and by this time the most violent top notes have left the building; and so you start to detect some very stoic, old, ancient woody notes, some of them charred some of them matured, and also some pine/Christmas tree notes start to subtly whisper. It all finally starts alligning, making sense and blending in nicely. However, one of the offensive notes remains and it feels like it's concentrated eucalyptus or something similar like in the little tubes you insert in your nostrils for decongestion purposes. From up-close it offends, from 3-5+ centimeters is tolerable. 20-30 minutes later some fruity notes become bold enough to be distinguishable once their violent housemates have left for town and the fragrance becomes even slightly more sophisticated. Later on some more notes join along and become even more complex and layered and the sky starts brightening up, its not all dark and green anymore and finally all those notes mentioned in the note list start making sense. 2 hours later there is no more offense at all and it dries down to a cocktail of lively woody and perhaps every so slightly rotting fruit, which is still a good accord. Very conflicting and cinematic transformation and evolution. Good story-telling for those who have patience to make it to the second act, but I feel that it loses steam a bit too quick one the top and half of the mid notes have evaporated. I would avoid this if I were 30 or younger. Definitely not a club-scent like Phantom or Sauvage or the like. You wear this to your uncle's funeral or at an outdoor event or shooting competition or if you have to undergo a ceremony to be anointed as an Earl. Appropriate for jolly undertakers and farmers/gardeners too. This is what Sean Connery would have probably worn if he was still around and was going to an outdoor function. However you must be able to stand your ground if you wear this because you might be questioned over it. You might also question your own nose too. I must say I like it but I would love it even more if it did not transition so quickly to its final form and remained more smoky and more green. Splendidly creative exercise though and beautiful suspenseful cocktail.

Beaufort is one of those fragrance houses that treat their wares like a whisky drinker treats his dram: for me and nobody but me. I will admit sometimes I have dared to imbibe for the sake of others, be it my lack of nerves after said consumption or maybe I think I'm funnier (probably not) after having done so; but for the most part if I choose to pour myself a rather nice glass of single malt, or make a cocktail, it's for my own personal enjoyment. Drinking for the enjoyment of others just doesn't really make sense at that point. Much is the way of BeauFort in general, and Rake & Ruin in specific in this instance. You are not wearing this (or Vi et Armis, 1805 Tonnerre, etc) because you want others to enjoy themselves around you. Yes, they might, if they are of the persuasion that you yourself seem to be if you are indeed wearing this, but chances are you're not putting this on and going out to the bar or the club to attract a member of whichever sex you fancy. The general populace is not saying, "Gosh I hope I find someone tonight that smells of smoke, pine, gin, and castoreum!" Maybe after 8 hours in a dive bar and 3/4 of a pack of Marlboro Reds but I digress... Rake & Ruin and most of BeauForts other offerings are a personal experience meant for those who take fragrance as a unique, individual enjoyment. And this is why I love this house so much. If I put on a fragrance, I'm the one living with it. The right fragrance can be an 8-15 hour long ride of small hits of enjoyment, nuance, and progression in a way that a single pour of whisky can only hope to achieve for half an hour's duration. Fragrances such as this, with its dirty, heavy, alcohol filled journey of bad attitude and lamentations of having one too many are our ability to personally experience an art form up close in an intimate way. If you may think you'd like a brash, raw, daring scent that feels so far removed from designer houses that GQ wouldn't put a peel and sniff advert in its pages no matter how much money you threw at them, try this out. Just remember the journey is for you.

Up here in the Colorado Rockies, fire isn’t just a smell, it’s a season and that season is now. This perfume opens like the crack of lightning across a parched western slope sky. It’s a sharp and bitter smoke that cuts through the mountain air and makes my chest and bowels tighten with recognition. It’s the scent of resinous pine igniting, of juniper branches popping and sparking as my beloved Roosevelt Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park gives itself over to flame. Then comes the whiskey heat which I will call boozy and reckless. It’s like the handful of men who hang around town (Grand Lake in this case) who’ve watched their homes, cabins, and shacks burn while pouring another glass of local Leopold Brothers Three Chamber Rye, cursing the wind, Japanese beetles, and the dry pine needle earth in equal measure. It clings to me like a story told around a fire pit, equal parts tragedy and equal parts bravado. As it settles, the fragrance softens into glowing embers, charred wood that breathes warmth even as it reminds me of what others have lost during these late summer months of past. A little sweetness lingers under the smoke, the way new grass stubbornly pushes up through our thin layer of blackened soil. Up here we know fire takes and fire gives, and Rake & Ruin seems to capture both the ruin and the resurrection in one raw, untamed whiff.

OMG - what the heck is this stuff? I got a sample spritzer from Blooms in London (excellent store by the way - thoroughly recommend them. Great service). I did a single spray on my wrist yesterday. Gunpowder, burnt stuff, more burnt stuff, leather, some more burnt stuff. An astonishing scent - but I actually loved it. Now right at the top of my list of "must buy full bottle". Longevity is fantastic - lasted over 12 hours on my skin. I've smelled nothing like this before and really didn't expect to love it so much. I would be astonished if I got any compliments wearing this. I would be astonished if anyone came within 10 feet of me to be honest. It's a difficult, challenging, original and utterly enthralling scent. Magical. UPDATE : I've still not purchased a FB of this. I keep asking myself, is this something I want to smell like all day? Don't get me wrong, I still love the fragrance, think it's magical, but do I really want to smell like I'm half way through being tarred and feathered in a leather barrel? I may come back to this in a few months. I've sampled 4 of the Beaufort fragrances so far; Iron Duke, Lignum Vitae, Couer de Noir, and Rake and Ruin. They're all masterfully crafted and simply wonderful scents; as scents. But of the 4 only Iron Duke is something I'd want to wear, at least currently. Maybe my nose and tastes will develop.

Dark, smoky citrus dominates the start, orange and lemon sharing the stage against a backdrop of very aggressive smoke. It's not a single type of smoke, e.g. wood or tobacco, but the scent of a myriad of substances and items burning. There is also an animalic and vaguely marine note, perhaps the ambrarome. A bitter herbal note joins the cacophony after perhaps ten minutes. Not sure what it is. This is quite nice and quite niche. The first minute or so was an obnoxious blast of smoke, like this house's related fragrance Vi et Armis, but it quickly became something else entirely. Something in it actually smells edible to me, I think because of the pepper, but it is in no way a gourmand in the typical sense. A smoky fragrance with an edible edge might call Scotch whisky to mind, but this doesn't evoke that to me. I would not consider it especially boozy; however, the gin accord is detectable. I guess this is supposed to create the impression of various vices, and I can see that. If I were to design a fragrance based around the concept of vice, though, I think it would be dirtier. Aside from the ambrarome or whatever is responsible for the dirty marine note, this fragrance leans more into smoky and spicy than dirty. I'm not saying you should blind buy it by any means, but if animalic notes put you off, this is still worth a try.

Sichuan pepper, Gin, and smoke. The pepper is exceptionally dry, which sharp smell does lend to the visual of being in a wooden bar/pub that has had years of spilled alcohol soaked into it. The smoke is not so much a tobacco smoke, but more of a gunpowder smoke....or even metallic smoke that could come from metallurgy. Sillage and longevity are stronger than average. I could smell it on my fingers just after opening my sample vial. I appreciate it for recalling a place and time, but I can't see myelf ever wearing this. It's an example of perfume being an art. EDIT: I actually bought a full bottle of this. I wore it a few times in a larger amount so I could actually smell the dry down, and the drydown is excellent. The sichuan pepper isn't as pungent and gets more dirty than spicy. The gin lends a nice sweetness (I usually dislike sweet fragrances). Performance is still great, and it isn't off-putting. But in no way is this a safe blind buy. It took me nearly a month with my sample to warm up to this. But I find most of the scents I really enjoy took a while for me to get to that point. Worth a sample for the curious!
- em inglês
It starts with a prominent bitter greenness (angelica(?) galbanum(?), juniper, pine, sichuan pepper, liquorice, animalics and smoke). Then this blend will tone down in the drydown and co-star with a round woody/ambery/musky note reminding me of Lignum Vitae from the same house (ambrarome and palo santo more than labdanum and sandalwood imo). Masterpiece-level masculine opening and a drydown that becomes unisex. A really great fragrance compared to 99% of the market, but that is just overall good compared to the other ones of this house (that said, T1805, ID, CdN and FV puts the bar quite high...). That is also valid performance-wise, which is just average on my skin, as opposed to the majority of the other Beaufort fragrances (also surprising given the price point). Recommended, even if not my favourite of this house because of a drydown that doesn't meet the opening's expectations. But afterall... isn't the purpose of art to surprise its audience? Mild to cold days, 30+ Edit: now one of my two favourites, a bottle is on its way!

I am in love with this. Truly. The smoky, cold dark, bitter freshness is perfect. The gin, the angelica, the pine...utterly beautiful and natutral smelling. The name refers to William Hogart`s The Rake's Progress which is a series of eight paintings by this 18th-century English artist. The series shows the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, the spendthrift son and heir of a rich merchant, who comes to London, wastes all his money on luxurious living, prostitution and gambling, and as a consequence is imprisoned in the Fleet Prison and ultimately Bethlem Hospital (Bedlam). The use of the note of Gin is especially important in this context, as Gin was the main booze consumed by so many unfortunate creatures of London in the 1700`s London. This fragrance is pure Art!

this shit is so incredibly sexy. So sexy I may like men now. Holy shit. I need a full bottle immediately. It smells like a beautiful icy water spirit quenched a burning burning conifer forest and then made out with the fire spirit afterwards. It's the shit a Vancouver transplant hiker from France in tip top shape who still smokes cigarettes regardless would wear. This is the shit your hot PNW winter fling would wear on a walk through Pacific spirit park on a rainy day with no umbrella. incredibly awesome sexy cool woman purchased me the bulk of for test list as an early Christmas gift and so far this is my fav. Full bottle shall be ordered VERY SOON. #WEUSEDTOPRAYFORTIMESLIKETHESE

You could replicate this scent by curing animal skins over a smokey fire or by lining a dogs basket with an old wax jacket. The opening is slightly different and I imagine snorting finely chopped broad bean pods would do it. Wore it to a meeting and the young lady sitting next to me had to relocate to the other side of the room almost immediately. She was very polite and didn't say why but I knew... oh yes I knew... so did everyone else in that small room. There’s lovely orange and juniper notes lurking within all the rich craziness. Watch out though for a disagreeable waxiness that can develop - I find this gets worse if I go for a run wearing it.
- em inglês
First sniff of this is bonkers, so I can understand the hate here, but personally I love it. The juniper and smoke are very prominent to start, but it dries down to this lovely, musky base. Yes it's quite animalic as it develops, but it's that rugged, slightly sweaty kind rather than the fecal or urinous type. It's definitely not for everyone and the opening (especially for the first couple of minutes) is quite challenging, but it's a real grower! So much so I bought a full bottle of it.
- em inglês
Pay little heed to the amusing hyperbole, this doesn't smell like a sweaty stroll through the Jorvik Viking Centre on a hot afternoon. It's an aromatic, musty springtime jaunt to Willows and Wetlands; all wattle and daub and verdant, hessian sacks of grain. I do understand the association with debauchery, and to wear it on an overly warm day is to suggest a noxious air of dishevelment. Strictly cooler days.

Hi everyone, an hour ago I got my hands on Rake & Ruin BeauFort London, personally I thought Rien ELd'O was slightly controversial, BeauFort did not disappoint me either, super olfactory experience, perfect for a sociopath, beautiful it is. There will be a global test, we'll see how they react in the supermarket, two clouds are completely enough, but I will apply 4, I suggest not to apply close to the nose.
- em inglês
It is one of the most fascinating, beautiful but of course kind of extreme experiences I have ever smelled... apart from metalic and syntethic concepts of CdG. It is the most beautiful Beaufort composition. You wear it for yourself, not for others. And guys, it smelled nothing like barbecue. It is rather a wet fire in the woods with a bottle of good alcohol and great, drunk companions. Scout camp maybe? 😏
- em inglês
This is not an easy-going scent, then again, the name already prepares you for the destruction that is to come. It's a perfect scene-setter, rake & ruin. If you ignore the big "X" warning on the bottle and still dare to visit, as we arrive on our horseback to a medieval castle that's been destroyed, set on fire, and the aftermath is utter misery. A very unique addition to my collection. Love it!
- em inglês
Another unique scent from the house. I get leather, smoke, woody floor polish, juniper, and a whole lot of hardcore weirdness. It's not a crowd pleaser, for sure, but it's certainly interesting, and as weird as it is, there's something about it that has me hooked. It's a grower, odd, certainly not for everyone, but do I like it? Yeah, I do. I like it a lot.

The correct notes. Top notes: Orange, lemon, gin, juniper, coriander and gun powder. Heart notes: Iris, violet, sechuan pepper, pink pepper, licorice and leather. Base notes: Cypress, pine, dry woods, sansalwood, castoreum, labdanum, ambergris and musk.

imagine entering a room for sailors in the 1800s where there is the smell of wood smoke to warm the place, the smell of gin, gunpowder, sex, blood and prostitution. smell of men who fought. masterpiece. 10/10

this smells like if cigarettes smelled really really appetizing. Heavy notes of marshmallow root and licorice root to me, which is a creamy, planty vibe. Really strange, I love it so much

Beaufort London's "Rake & Ruin" is a bold and evocative fragrance that transports the wearer to the debauched taverns of Georgian London. Inspired by William Hogarth's "A Rake's Progress," this scent captures the essence of indulgence and moral decline. Upon application, the fragrance opens with a potent blend of gin-infused notes, prominently featuring juniper, coriander, and angelica, complemented by zesty hints of orange and lemon. This boozy introduction is both intoxicating and invigorating, setting the stage for the scent's complex evolution. As it develops, smoky accords reminiscent of charred oak barrels and bonfires emerge, intertwined with subtle undertones of leather and earthy woods. The dry-down reveals a harmonious blend of musk, sandalwood, and lingering smoky nuances, creating a lasting impression of warmth and sensuality. Longevity 10/10: "Rake & Ruin" boasts impressive staying power, with the scent persisting throughout the day and into the evening. Sillage 10/10: This fragrance offers a substantial sillage, projecting well beyond handshake distance. Its pronounced presence ensures that the wearer leaves a memorable trail, making it ideal for those seeking a statement scent. Smell (subjective) 6/10: The olfactory profile is rich and multifaceted, seamlessly blending smoky and woody elements. The realistic portrayal of gin and smoke creates a unique and immersive experience, though some may find its intensity challenging. Olfactory Complexity 9/10: "Rake & Ruin" is a complex composition that evolves over time, revealing different facets as it dries down. The interplay of various notes keeps the wearer engaged, offering a dynamic olfactory journey. For full clarity, when I tried it for the first time I found it repulsive... but second time I found it weirdly pleasing... In summary, "Rake & Ruin" is a daring and distinctive fragrance that captures the essence of historical indulgence. Its potent blend of notes and impressive performance make it a standout choice for those seeking a memorable and immersive scent experience.

On the opening it smells like spicy smoked pickles! Or like someone put down fire with pickle juice. Weirdly enough not nesessary in unpleasant way, especially in the air or from far away. About an hour later, someone eats smoked pickles and it becomes smoky aromatic, then it morphs to be more animalic after 2 hours, and after 4 hours it becomes woodier, less aromatic, and (surprise!) hint of smoked pickles comes back again. ...I guess someone left one pickle behind? Definitely daring and unusual scent. Not for new to this hobby, and not for the faint of heart. Just like all BeauFort scents are, btw. Longevity, projection and sillage are great. I don't know who rated it as unisex, both on my skin and on paper it definitely as masculine as it goes.

First Impression: I'm on the side of a highway, trapped in a phone booth with a Hells Angel motorcycle member. He smells of petrol and sweat. Wearing a leather jacket that is dirty with tar and road grit. He's been rolling around in the foliage of the woods. Looking at the notes now and it kinda makes sense. Castoreum, birtch tar, musk, cypress and woods. This is something I'd wear to a biker bar or on a road trip. It's LOUD AF at first but calms down and suprisingly, doesn't have great longevity like the rest of the house. But there's no denying the artwork here. Scent 6/10 Performance 5/10 This is what an evil Arthur Fonzerelli or the biker from the movie Raising Arizona would wear 😄
- em inglês
Opens up VERY fresh, spiked, lettuce-like, but smoked, and feels more like gin, all with a citrusy angelica bias, but overall still fresh lettuce-like to start. Deep in the drydown the gin accord (which at this point I'm sure is a particular woody accord) takes an amber bias, while still maintaining some musk characteristic. Despite the mess of notes, it still manages to work out an identity that I think is really unique to greens that I haven't smelled before. Really captivating for sure, but not my forte. Exceptional longevity. Unfortunately, no leather here.
- em inglês
I've tasted salty and sweet liqourice, and now the set is full with the addition of the peppery kind. The opening is "the spice bomb", one will enjoy its casualties for some time, as there's no lack of potency in this flask. Drydown is definetely more well-rounded and tamed - still spicy, but in a wooden furnuture type of way (if it makes sense). Very butch, crisp and assertive. I did expect to get an overwhelming amount of liquid smoke, luckily enough it's not that overpowering. Wearing "Rake & Ruin" is easy and fun, if you don't go hard on the trigger.
- em inglês
This is the dark animalic one from the house, it's less smoky than the others but the castoreum and costus give this a sweaty leathery element to what feels like a woody and mildly spicy (juniper giving the gin feel) base and middle. I hate costus as a note for its blood evoking aspect, but it's not overused here only hinting at it. Great job on the blend. Good interpretation of the creative brief on this one, but you must like dark and animalic fragrances to enjoy this imho.
- em inglês
This is very complex and unusual perfume and definitely not for a blind buy! The opening is very weird but then while it’s drying down it gets better. It has very good longevity and sillage.
- em inglês
Much like the name suggests, this smells like death and destruction. Absolutely repulsive and unwearable, but so special and beautifully crafted.

Only for real Men! ;O) Power like Iron Duke!

This is nowhere near as outrageous as its reputation would suggest. I was so ready for this to grab me by the throat, and tbh I'm left a bit wanting... not sure what that says about me-- I'll consult my analyst and circle back on that. The impression I'm getting is smokey and rainy in equal measures, like there's been a fire, but then a storm swept in and put everything out. I'm guessing what I'm reading as rain is the background freshness of the "gin" accord, but I could be wrong. The licorice aspect isn't loud by any means, but it's there, and it's probably my favorite part about this, although I'm with the minority of people who like licorice in general, so I imagine that's not going to track for most folks. Side bar: If you do like licorice tho and know a good licorice frag lmk This is alright. It briefly takes you to a very specific place, which is cool, but it's not a place I'd go out of my way to visit, especially seeing as how it's a place that was so recently on fire. Love this house, but R&R is eclipsed by several of their other releases, despite being the one in the lineup hollering loudest for attention.

Beaufort London's Rake and Ruin transcends the realm of fragrance; it's a veritable olfactory masterpiece, a journey through time and atmosphere. Upon spraying, you're instantly transported to a dimly lit, sordid 1800s pub, teeming with rogues, pirates, and ne'er-do-wells. The air is thick with the acrid fumes of cheap, low-quality tobacco, as you nervously sip a gin and tonic, sensing the unrelenting stares of the pub's denizens who know you don't quite belong. As the evening (the drydown) unfolds, you eventually depart the establishment, but the scent and the lingering eerie sensation cling to you, an indelible part of your day. Rake and Ruin isn't merely a fragrance; it's a narrative encapsulated in a bottle. It transports you to an era long past, evoking emotions, memories, and a vivid sense of place. While not an everyday choice, it's a remarkable experience for those seeking a fragrance that's more than just a scent—it's a story, a journey, and a piece of art that lingers with you throughout the day.

I went and got the Revenants Discovery set because I was curious about this Perfume brand. This straight up smells like smoky wood. Maybe with a bit of sweat. It's a quite interesting smell. The beginning of the smell is a bit to strong for my liking but the dry down is almost pleasent. Would not run away from someone wearing this. Expcept if it is in the summer then I can imagine that the scent would be overwhelming. So better wear it in the colder months. It is giving person at the pub that passes you and you look up at them and they are sexy af but you are too intimidated to talk to them eventhough they clearly smiled at you. Will smell this every now and then for the smell experience but I would never wear this.
- em inglês
This fragrance is really complex At least to my nose When first sprayed I felt it somewhat challenging After a while it gets better The way it gets shaped to me it starts mainly with the smoke leading everything else After a little while it starts getting green Really green and aromatic id say It’s a strange scent that is hard to appreciate by everyone but lovers of rugged scents will like it To me it was a little too green Personally i felt it wasn’t good enough to my nose so I will gracefully pass on it
- em inglês
Smells like a burnt castle from centurys ago. Not too unpleasant, little bit weird. Probaly not too wearable either. Whish the other notes were stronger, the smoke kind of dominates everything. I can appreciate the artistic side of this fragrance, the house always nails to give a feeling of a different age, 1700-1900 I ́d imagine. But I personally would not want to wear this.
- em inglês
New to fragrances so maybe this wasn't the best house for a beginner, but I was intrigued by them so I got samples of some of their scents. I liked Arcasia a lot and wearable, but this one missed the mark for me, didn't get that vintage 1800s goth story telling from their other scents: Head notes: harsh nail polish dry down: straight up smells like an inflatable donut
- em inglês
This is not my favorite. It starts with a lot of smoke to become a weak grandpa scent after an hour or two. Definitely not the best creation by BL, but still not bad.
- em inglês
Extremely smoky & woody, smells like anger to me. Unfortunately it didn’t last very long on my skin :(

Oh dear.... Oh dear oh dear.... The boundary testing olfactory experiment that is Beaufort has just stepped into territory I don't like at all. Having tried Tonnare first and loving the wet stone/gunpowder into, very smokey notes and dryness then a lasting fresh citrus and ozonic, seabreeze accord that was simply stunning...to this, it's been a long journey. Some inbetween teetered with upsetting me this one just spilled out into proper weird. It reminds me a little of a friend of mine who's personal hygiene leaves somewhat to be desired. There's an animal, sweaty, dirty, unwashed hair/beard, denim jacket (complete with metal band patches) slightly alcohol, cannabis smoke and bong water sauteed feel to rake and ruin. Now... I placed the image in my partners mind when I said do you think this smells like....%$^$"%&^??? and she was was like OMG YES!!! but still impressive. Anyway, Is this unique...absolutely, I've never smelled anything like it...It's woody and has the element of pine or spruce, I get even a meditative quality of incense. The bbq rib sauce and bomfire smoke looms large and coupled with those animal qualities (which I'm adverse to btw) which in this setting and composition are pretty unbearable. The opening goes give that lovely gunpowder, slightly metallic smoke quality somewhat of a Beaufort signature, it's just a nuts fragrance. I don't even think the composition is messy, it's deliberate focused and has real purpose to me. I wish I liked it, loved it even...but I can't get over the fact that it's a bad smell. Infinitely complex and an incredible feat of olfactory innovation...but still it's a bad smell. An olfactory piece of art but unwearable. I could probably replicate the effect by going on a three month bender and never showering or changing my clothes, sleeping next to a burning tyre yard, maybe imbibing some of the ingredients said to be in here? Sorry Beaufort you are generally a brand I love...this is just a stretch too far for me personally, good luck to those who love it and wear it. UPDATE: Okay so my thoughts haven't changed on this one but I'm interested to note that Ambrome is now being quoted as a note on Fragrantica and it's a material included in Rake & Ruin. I have some Ambrome and it's the strangest material, smelling as it does, somewhat similar to labdanum absolute. Great right? Nope! It's actually soured my appreciation for labdanum and perhaps used in Minuit quantities might be really effective but the raw stuff or if you put too much in....Jesus it's awful! Maybe that's a contributing factor to why I hate this so much? In any case although I didn't smell it (I would've definitely mentioned it in my review) it doesn't surprise me to see it in here.

Oh Beaufort ... you naughty, naughty boys. Another outrageous stink bomb lobbed fuming into the centre of the class from the grubby mudlarks mucking about in the back. Every time I smell one of their fragrances I burst out laughing at the sheer cheek of it all - in a good way - they make me think of a gang of inky, scruffy, prank-loving kids running riot through the perfumed halls of the elite, without really hurting anyone. Basically Beaufort just doesn't do 'normal', which is apt given its founder is a member of notorious rave bad-boy crew The Prodigy ("I'm a firestarter! Twisted Firestarter!") and this, like all their other scents, is a nasal expression of that shock-yer-socks-off aesthetic. It's irresistibly berserk, almost hostile, will please very very few and is unapologetically itself. You might hate it but still you can't deny it has energy and attack. So, it's the smell of a riotous NYE night out and the inevitable, unglamorous aftermath. Mostly gunpowder at first, as in Tonnerre/1809 - a metallic, chemical accord which I pretty much like - and a firecracker burst of spices with a great slosh of gin. Unfortunately for me, underneath there lurks something greasy-animalic ( castoreum? particularly fetid ambergris?) which rockets straight to sweated-in-and-worn-again-garment body odour. It's much more manageable here, but still just as steamy-armpitty as in the unwearable Vi et Armis. Looking at all those fresh outdoorsy conifers in the pictures above you might picture this as a clean forest scent ... but nothing could be further from the truth - it's cold, wet, gritty, industrial - very much the rainy small hours on the streets of London. And as with so many drunken evenings, the smell doesn't improve as the hours wear on, and the sweatiness gets even staler until you are left reeking with impeccable, unmistakable, liquid eau de hangover. It's not for me, then - but it was never meant to be. Don't let this review put you off; if you want mad originality, lots of gunpowder and booze and aromatics, and if the mix behaves better on you than me, this will probably be someone's dream scent. I'll still dare to go out and rave with some of the other bad boys from Beaufort like Tonnerre or Iron Duke, or maybe even stay in and smoke a granddad's pipe with its Coeur de Noir, but Rake and Ruin is just too rough a roughneck for me. Mercy, mercy - I cry for mercy!

Too avant-garde for my nose. This is in the same league as that other enfant terrible, Caron's Yatagan. Both have different scent profiles, but both challenge the wearer to keep from scrubbing the thing off right away. I am not familiar with firearms, but this really evokes gunpowder and a deep bitterness that catches in the back of my throat. The note list has many notes and accords that all sound like they will make this a pleasant-smelling concoction, but they are all dosed in a miniscule proportion relative to whatever is producing the bitter smoke accord. A mix of gunpowder, machine oil, and dark leather that smells positively menacing. I imagine this is what it would smell like if you stood next to a Howitzer that's being fired. Wear this if you want to repel, intimidate and project an air of unapproachability.

Testing blind, my little sample vial I now know was one of a few given when I suggested something different when offered by the boutique store owner. While he did not disappoint on "different", the fragrance itself is a hard pass. While I thought this would be a vetiver forward fragrance, looking at the cornucopia of notes now this is all getting a bit farcical. The smokey fragrance is memory invoking of getting ready to cook a brisket... it's all smoke. I get many of the wood, pine, and similar notes, but a large majority of these are like a sugar pill, only there by suggestion alone. There's no gin, juniper, cirrus, or really any spice. While longevity was good, I really only like my mezcal this smokey, not myself.

Very few perfumes manage to create some shock. This one does. As I was experiencing the Beaufort line of smoky woods (Vi et Armis, Tonnerre) and sweet cookies (Lignum Vitae) I picked up a bootle with an X. I placed my nose to the lid and... it was like putting my nose on my pillow and realise that someone else had slept there. It smelled like the hair and the oils and the head of someone. This someone most probably spent the previous night drinking Gin&Tonic in some pub with a fireplace along Long John Silver. Perhaps, it is actually the smell of the hair of Long John Silver. Very weird but totally balsy to use so much costus in a perfume. Don't know if I have to applaud or run away applauding.

Funny to read all the reviews. Well, here's my take. Rake & Ruin opens with a very strong celery smell. It doesn't last long until other spices appear and the smoke. The bad part about it is, it reminded me of food - very spicy food. And that part lasted for at least 7 hours. As the scent started to dissipate, it became more of a plain smoky/woody scent. I really don't want to smell like I came out of a restaurant. This one isn't for me. Performance is quite good. I'm currently on about 11 hours and it's a pretty strong skin scent. Projection is quite good for the first few hours.

Strong smoke and woody notes plus mentioned burned hair, sadly no gin or juniper for me and sichuan pepper makes it bit sweaty. I do get hint of metallic, tin and rosin after soldering on plastic board, then surprisingly nice orange but for a minute only. A strong man could pull it for night at the bar, but otherwise can be confused for not so good hygiene - not for everyday use, dont know where to could I pull it.

This is the smell of a medieval dungeon. The guards are smoking and drinking by a fire, the air is damp and there is an unpleasant animatic note of prisoners rotting in cells. It creates a good story but I wouldn’t want to smell of this. It’s that rank animatic note that’s repulsive - from the other reviews I wonder whether some people don’t smell this note. Doesn’t scrub off easily so presumably long lasting.

I love everything from BeauFort except this. Smells like bad morning breath and anaerobes. Partially burnt burlap sack filled with hair. Hard pass.

I get smoke and vinegar, like pickled pepper juice. Definitely something ~different.
