Mr. Blass

Now this is a fragrance that also deserves a lot more recognition. An American fashion brand but made in Italy, it reminds me of many very classy 'suit and tie' fragrances from both sides of the Atlantic, and has a pedigree that really shows through - even at this extraordinary price-point. (As a matter of fact, I honestly do not know how they make this fragrance at this price.) The more animalic dimension to this is evident at the very opening, but that should not turn you off this fragrance. The dry-down - even early on - becomes very nice and all of those notes seem to work together to give something which is characteristically masculine, seemingly fairly generic - but yet quite unique when deliberated upon. I have smelled a lot of fragrances like Mr.Blass and yet nothing quite the same (though it approximates quite well at some points to Chanel's Cuir de Russie). I think they have used what is literally a Greatest Hits of some of the most usual of masculine fragrance notes here, but yet the result is a tune unlike any other. I also get the Escada PH reference that other people experience, but again this is still a very different fragrance from that 'tuxedo-and-cognac' masterpiece.) When I wear Mr. Blass I can't help but think of an American corporate setting from the old times, 1950s or so. It is redolent of that kind of environment - which is no bad thing - and does give a reassuring and trustworthy vibe, without getting loud or offensive. This latter point assures the wearer of a more timeless feel to the fragrance. I would highly recommend this to anybody who is looking for something which meets those standards - at a really great price. Furthermore, if you are looking for something like Cuir de Russie, it is definitely worth investigating. Only drawback for me is that the longevity is not great and you may find yourself applying more than usual amounts on skin and clothes to make up for this.

Mr. Blass is a very, very nice retro scent profile that harkens back 20 years from its release in 2009. And generally a familiar scent profile that was part of the late 80's and early 90's zeitgeist. It's in the same general DNA wheelhouse as Escada Pour Homme, Ralph Lauren Safari, YSL Jazz, Salvador Dali Salvador, Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels, and maybe even Sergio Tacchini - all from that time period. And also probably a scent profile curtsy to the 1972 Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur. It's got a nice masculine woodiness and earthiness with the accord formed by the cypress, vetiver, and dusty nutmeg. Just a slight bit of smokiness with the incense, and of course the soft leather. All of the edges are smoothed out with the slightly sweet amber and vanilla. Just really smooth, elegant and soft, yet completely masculine. I do get the somewhat harsh, synthetic opening as reported by a few, but as it dries down, it gets smoother and smother. The magic of Mr. Blass is in the drydown. Performance is mediocre, but I sprayed a few dozen times on skin and clothes. Heavy spraying elevates the performance to near satisfactory, as I would get natural wafts to my nose for a good while. And with the inexpensive price I can afford to spray very heavily. This will go in my "Office Scent" collection due to the pleasant, unchallenging scent profile and modest projection. Mr. Blass is a great value and can serve as an occasional everyday wear so I can conserve my discontinued bottle of Escada Pour Homme and Tsar. I've upgraded this to a "love" and put it in my favorites collection. I'm wearing my Escada Pour Homme today, and I'd have to say Mr. Blass is actually a near-clone of Escada Pour Homme. Escada is the better representation of the scent profile, but in terms of scent profile, they are very close.

This is what a mature man should smell like, leather,incense, amber and musk with spices in the mix. A wonderful rich, quietly confident masculine fragrance that has incredibly grown on me more and more. projection is good for the first couple of hours. Longevity is a moderate 4-5 hours with 4 sprays though it stays close to the skin most of the time. Do not let the fact that Mr.Blass can be found at throw away prices make you dismiss it out of hand as a cheapie. It is anything but that. It is similar in spirit to Escada Pour Homme and Aramis and if you like either, chances are you will like this as well. This was a blind buy that was a total winner and the average longevity is the only gripe I have.Please Go give Mr. Blass a chance, he is all class.More people deserve to smell this wonderful fragrance. A total unexpected goodie for me and I love it. 8/10 Edit/Rant- I have been reading some of the reviews of Mr. Blass written after I wrote mine and I have to say, I am surprised. This is a great fragrance for it's price. I wish people would put a cap on their expectations. You cant seriously expect to pay 10$ for a bottle of perfume and expect Amouage or Dior level quality. Get real. This is a great fragrance and value for money as long as your expectations are reasonable.

Always on the lookout for cheap/good, I bought a 40ml bottle for, uh, like 7 bucks. I do not think it's a masterpiece, niche quality, etc--that's just my inexpert opinion. I do think it is above average and terrific as a work scent. The leather is like a much higher quality GBH Red (for men): enough similarity to notice but much less artificial and loud. On me, that leather note showed up and stayed within arms length from 1/2 hour to about 4 hours. After that I actually picked up a vetiver note right next to my skin for maybe 2 more hours. Though I like vetiver, this isn't the best rendering of it. BB manages to balance "unlikely to offend" with "good" about as well as a designer fragrance can. There's basically no risk in buying a bottle, and there ARE rewards, though not exuberant ones. Scent: 7/10 Sillage: 5/10 Longevity: 5/10

Oh, wow! Look at that! They reformulated this cheap but good stuff. What used to be an oriental/leather/incense fougere with yuzu in the forefront is now an oriental/leather fougere with incense in the forefront. For me, it's sort of like going from a boozy L'Eau d'Issey to an incensey Fendi Uomo. Who were the noses for this stuff? They both smell great! I'm very happy with both results. My only problems, albeit very minor, are the longevity of the earlier edition and the aldehydic drydown of the current one which smells like my mum's Charlie. Otherwise, I'll keep buying this. It's definitely worth the money I paid for it...and then some!

Discontinued, so the price here was doubled to 60 USD. If the price fall back to 40 USD or lower, it's unbeatable among perfumes accentuating leather. It's warm, smooth and tender, bitter yet particularly comforting. To my nose the leather is much more prominent than other notes, but it is harnessed by cypress and nutmeg, and attended by appropriate amount of sweetness. During the drydown, which comes about 1h after application on my skin, the ambery sweetness surpasses the leather. It's low profile with moderate projection and longevity. Not night-cluby. Gender: male Season: not for hot and humid summer. Age: quite mature

What a gorgeous masculine fragrance. Dates from the 80s, but can stand up to most any fragrance in the last 15yrs. I would agree with Cytherian that there is some resemblance to Gucci PH I, but unbelievably, you can pick this gem up for less than $10 for 1.3oz. For you wood lovers, this most definitely has a strong wood essence going on. If you are drawn to a classic male frag, I believe you will appreciate this overlooked jewel.

Mr Blass is an excellent fragrance that can be found for an absolute steal. This has quickly become one of my favorites. Incense and leather are the winners for me...very even and never overpowering. I actually wish there was a little more oomph in the oakmoss (almost like they took an 80's powerhouse and dialed down the volume). Projection and longevity are sadly on the low side so don't be afraid to spray generously.

Wonderful little gem that smells a helluva lot more expensive than it sells for. A great "old school" fragrance that you would swear was released in the 70s/80s. Absolutely worth the price if you like older era fragrances. Very elegant fragrance that's perfect for the well-groomed man.

I blind bought this and glad to see it was added to the directory. It is fun old school juicy. Boozy, cigar and leather together like a good party. A little tipsy but not obnoxious drunk. A nice escape from the current trend of fresh frags. I hope it doesn't disappear.

Cytherian nailed it right on the head. I recommend it but it could definitely use better longevity. Spray on clothes, add glycerin, or if you're the experimental type, you might want to augment the musk (I think they use habanolide).

Amazing fragrance for its price though the longevity is an issue ...but I find no resemblance to my signature frag Escada pour homme....smells similar to Nathalie lorson's Bentley for men

I think it smells classic and manly on men. I like it... it makes me feel the man who wears it is strong and protective. :-)

A CITRUS/LEATHER/INCENSE...VERY BRIGHT SMELLING AND VIBRANT CONCOCTION...8.5/10

This is impressive juice - an incredible scent for the price! Easily could have been made 25-30+ years ago. A rich and bold scent that shows as a leathery dark chypre with a great warmth and body to it. Not sure about the scent pyramid listed. As I get a rich note of deep patchouli in this as well as a nice pinch of tobacco leaf. The blended tobacco with the hint of spicy booziness reminds me of when I used to soak a rag in good brandy (or cognac) and let it sit in my humidor - with the cedar (ie. woody notes) lining permeating the Cohibas and Montecristos I had saved for occasions. The woody vetiver is there along with a nice smooth amber note that glows underneath the entire composition. A rich musk is present throughout the composition - it is mostly clean and not invasive or overly animalic. The leather is smooth, "worn" has a "broken-in" feeling, and not invasive or oily (no birch tar). Nicely balanced. I like how there is no single note that dominates here. I don't think this is an "updated" or modernized old-school smell - it is simply a cozy and comforting, confident, macho scent that is mature, sophisticated and deep (not mysterious, but dark indeed). Not intended for casual wear - this is a masculine and classy fragrance well-worth the price tag...I would say blind that this is a $60 bottle of juice and most likely vintage! I like that it is cozy and not a silage monster - it exudes confidence more this way. I am rather taken back by the sheer quality here...great notes, well-blended and a classic flacon. I don't like to give ratings, but I definitely like this scent. I recommended Mr. Blass to powerhouse fragrances lovers and gentlemen who enjoy a refined scent who want something more intimate and comforting. Cheers.

In most every sense, this is a fine fragrance. It is a major bargain at the going prices (usually under $20 for the 125ml bottle). The flacon is made of solid heavy glass with a thick bottom, a design reminiscent of Gucci Pour Homme I. But GPH-I will drain your wallet about 10x as fast. Yes, it has gotten that expensive. The opening is a bit sharp and pungent, but after a few minutes it begins to dry down. After about 30 mins the dry down is fully under way and in a full hour later it is nearly a skin scent. So, to get more "oomph" you need to spray it a bit liberally and layer. But for the price, why not? It is definitely a quality leather/wood/spicy fragrance. It has an old-school vibe, but yet it still smells modern somehow. The leather, cedar, amber, bergamot, vetiver and spices (notably nutmeg) are in plain view. I cannot really find fault with this fragrance, aside from the sharp opening and the rather light sillage. And well, maybe longevity... but again, you can spray with ease as this isn't expensive. And yet, I'm not "reaching" for this often. It just sits there, passed by other fragrances I prefer. I won't dispense with it. Seems a shame to, given all it has. But it will definitely last me a decade or more, because it simply won't be sprayed often. Maybe it'll grow on me, who knows... and by then, it'll be expensive and sought after--the pattern repeats. ;-) Fragrance: 7/10, Value: 9.5/10.

I do love the really well-crafted old-school fragrances (e.g., Bois du Portugal, Fahrenheit, Antaeus, Kouros, etc. ). Conversely, I also despise the old-school fragrances that smell dated or overly-mature. In the case of Mr. Blass, it smells like the later. I imagine this one is a fragrance an old-man would wear after having lost his sense of smell, exuding a stench after developing a personal hygiene problem, and shortly before his death from smoking too many cheap cigars while burning mosquito-chasers in an air-tight room. Sad, but true! I really wanted to love this one because it's 'old-school', the name sounds cool, and it's right-priced. I purchased this one years ago and just applied it after realizing I haven't worn it since 2016. I hate it as much as ever. The word masterpiece is tossed around far too often. However, the word piece--as in this fragrance is a piece of $*#%--would be more befitting of Mr. Bill. Oh Nooooooo! Longevity and projection are less than 10-minutes, which is about how long it took me to scrub this one from my skin and reach for a bottle of Mancera Aoud to cover over the remnants of the crime scene left on my skin. I was very disappointed with this fragrance.

I've had this for over a year now. It's not a favorite. Very nice for the price, but... there's just something about it that doesn't work for me. I have 10 Corso Como Uomo, which I find similar but more enjoyable to my nose. It's similar enough that I marked it as such, yet -- Mr. Blass lags behind. Why? NUTMEG. I love nutmeg on desserts or in eggnog. As a fragrance note though... seems like it MUST have some sweetness to be most appealing. Mr. Blass has a light touch of sweetness but not enough to support the nutmeg note (for my taste -- you may think differently if you enjoy nutmeg in any form). As such, combined with the cypress it comes across a bit stale, like the overcoat of an elderly gentleman who keeps it well cared for in a mothball lined closet but also never takes it to the dry cleaners. Mr. Blass is SO CHEAP that you really can't resell it (the extreme weight of the heavy bottle makes shipping too costly). So, my bottle will hang around just as something "different" to smell now and again. Or, I re-purpose the well made cap to go on a different bottle. :-)

I have been wearing Mr. Blass on and off for the past few months, and I just sprayed it on my left arm. The opening is a synthetic mess. However, it gradually evolves into an anemic, mature and masculine fragrance that is somewhat pleasant. I'm surprised at the amount of praise this juice gets. Yes the price is very cheap, but the low price will not allow me to be less critical. Mr. Blass to me has no soul, it has no teeth or claws to hold on to you. Wearing it makes me feel like the fragrance does not want to stay on my skin, it has no confidence. It is not a bad fragrance, but not a great one either. The bottle is nice and heavy and very masculine. I read that Michael Bastian was involved in creating this fragrance. He also stated that he has three bottles that he guards with his life. Really?

this is a solid cologne! Classic but modern enough at the same time. longevity is good (4-6hrs) projection- u can smell yourself without sniffing. probably one of the best presented and smelling for the price. the scent itself has a incence/nutmeg combo undertone which works very well with the dominating musk/vetiver. its not reliable enough for me to use for long days, but for 3 hr trip anywhere, this is blood good juice! will suit semi formal occasion or as an after shave. cool weather frag. 8/10 for the smell (even without considering the price) $15 for 75ml!
