Black Sand

I picked up a couple fragrances from Blackcliff and wanted to start with Black Sand. The brand creates scents inspired by Barbados and shaped by the rhythm of the sea and the scent of salt and wind. Black Sand specifically takes inspiration from the rugged east coast beaches where rough shores meet a kind of fog at twilight. Right from the opening Black Sand is interesting. It has a briny marine feel. Not super salty but clearly oceanic. You also get deep notes of whiskey with a touch of smoke and driftwood. The whiskey stands out the most. It comes across dark and almost oak-like. Mixed with the smoke and that briny edge it gives off a slightly dirty and rugged feel. This is not very beginner friendly. It is bold and a bit challenging at first. After about an hour it starts to shift. You get more saffron and angelica. It turns more earthy and green with a soft sweetness that feels almost root-like. It smooths out the opening but still keeps that natural windswept feel. After a couple hours it becomes more pleasant to my nose. A soft cacao note comes through. It smells a little chocolatey and powdery. There is also a woody musk in the base with a bit of sweetness. At this point it feels more balanced and easier to wear. This is definitely a unique fragrance. I have not smelled anything like it. The best way I can describe it is like being on a pirate ship where people are celebrating. Barrels of whiskey are open. You have salty air all around with wood smoke and a bit of chaos. It really paints that kind of picture. I think it is a cool fragrance with a strong vibe and it smells high quality. I am not sure how wearable it will be for everyone. I would let it dry down before judging it and definitely try before you buy. All in all, Black Sand is a really unique introduction to the house and worth experiencing if it sounds like something you would enjoy.

This one is really different; I haven't come across anything else like it. It has a strong, boozy vibe with a clear patchouli and woody backbone. There’s a bit of smoke and a light touch of sweetness, too. It’s definitely not for everyone. It is more of a "once in a while" experience for you probably. Nice bottle though. 6/10
