Complex

¡Wow wow wow! I got a medium-sized decant thinking I would not be able to handle this. Many reviews here and there warn of the worst nightmares when applying Complex on skin. In my case, I don't know whether it comes from having already smelled more than 1000 fragrances or this may have been reformulated but I didn't find any monster behind and I am totally smitten. I generally dislike animalic scents but here there's so much more than that... First, I mentally link this to other 2 Boadiceas (Explorer and Invigorating) as I feel the 3 are loud fragrances, chaotic and too "in your face" with resins, herbs and archaic feel, but it is in Complex that such mess smells wonderful and highly wearable. A grand start of green rainforest, comprising the smell of animals, flowers and leaves takes your olfactory sense by assault. Immediately after, a gorgeous mix of overripe lemon (close to yuzu here) mixed with herbs (I feel mate but could be some other), some leather and a cloud of resins work altogether in a similar way as Figment man, making you feel surrounded by a decaying forest where some wild animal could jump over you at any moment. It is very sexy and easy to wear as it develops on a safe line where no wild note screams over the rest. It gets slightly sweeter by the drydown (imagine a daring, 20 years younger cousin of Duel) and it stays and stays for ages. I am very surprised no one seems to smell the close-to-be-rotten note of citrus as it is what strikes me the most (I may be mistaking it with something else perhaps?) I can definitely see why many people find this disturbing or challenging and I wouldn't advise to blindbuy but please do sample as it could easily become someone's holy grail. My friends have had mixed ideas about this. Going from "it smells like an old garden where the citrus fell some days ago from the tree and are rotting on the wet floor surrounded by old furniture and some stuffed cat..." to "this is such a gorgeous masculine scent, so perfect and hot!!" so I guess not the safest around. I definitely want a huge bottle of this NOW.

#1225 in my "Tour de Fragrance" This stuff opens like a combination of walking through an overheated tannery and an incense factory. Similar to Orto Parisi "Quoium" in character, but with an even more phenolic opening that's like huffing camphor for the first fifteen minutes. Like Comme des Garcons "Scent One Hinoki" plus a ton of leather. Actually stung my eyes. Very old school to me. Boadicea does a couple more like this: "Intricate", "Elaborate." Notice the theme? "Complex:", "Intricate", 'Elaborate." Someone in marketing discovered synonyms. If you like DS Durga "Notorious Oud", Liquides Imaginaires "Saltus", Zoologists "King Cobra", this may be your jam. This is not something you wear in a car pool, elevator, small office. It'll be overwhelming. One spritz is all you need. It's long lasting, room filling. Pricey, but if you'll pay for a power scent that everyone will notice, then you get what you pay for with this. I'm at a loss for when and where I would use this, but I'm probably going to get it just because it is so over-the-top in potency and because Jomashop currently has it on sale at $165. Yeah. I ordered it.

I used to have a coat made of grey wool. When I put the colar up it was long enough to cover me from my ears down to my ankles. I wrap myself in that coat again and go for a walk in a forest, sometime in mid-November. The trees are bare, the leafs, now brown and dry, are rustling gently under my feets. The sky is grey and heavy. My breath forms tiny clouds. It might start snowing soon. I know there are four months of dark and cold winter ahead of me and I long for a tiny ray of light, a promise of spring. Something, that would let me cross safely from the dusk of November to the dawn of March. I sniff my wrist and there it is: that smell of green grass sprouting from the ashes, of earth coming back to life again, of resurection. It is uncompromizing and elemental, full of melancholy, but also hope. Brace yourself, arm yourself, leave whatever you have to leave behind you and walk forward.

I sniffed a ton of Boadiceas August 2015 in Harrods. Complex was the one I couldn't stop thinking about. I love oud. This is oodles and oodles of oud. It is savage. This is not "frgrance" or "perfume." This stuff is like having sex in hell with Satan and all his minions. It is burning, burnt, smoke, oud. It lasts forever and projects out the windows and knocks down the wall.s I got 100 ml for under $100 before Boadicea got trendy. I will treasure my bottle. But, this is not for people who want to smell like flowers, butterflies and puppy dogs.As for notes, I would say smoke, rubber, incense with some wood and dries down next day a little sprucey.This must have birch in it. I describe this as having sex with satan and all the minons of hell. It is that burnt offering and smokey. Oh, how I love you when I need to feel powerful.

Really leathery, really green and a bit of musk and civet. I wish the civet would be a little bumped up so it gives even more character, which it doesn't lack. Boadicea say it also has some oud but I don't smell any and that's not a problem as this fragrance is all about smoky leather and greens. I see people are calling it animalic or unwearable. That's not the case if you had some experience with fragrances until now. I really like it. It's special and the dry down is insatiable. Is it worth 250 EUR? I think so but it can be found under 200 with a little patience. Don't blind buy this. It's either an aquired taste or you understand and like it from experience with other ..polarizing fragrances.

I had a fantastic day today with Complex. After arriving in Mexico City, my family and I went to Xochimilco where we enjoyed a market breakfast and then rode horses. This is where Complex truly shone. Surrounded by the forest scents, eucalyptus, fresh grass, and even the horses, it felt perfectly in tune with the environment, enhancing the leathery and animalic aromas around us. With just three sprays—one on the back of my neck, one on my chest, and one on my shirt—the fragrance seamlessly blended with the day’s activities. It turned out to be a wonderful day, and my affection for Complex deepened. My wife was especially drawn to the scent, making it an unforgettable experience.

I won a bottle of this and it is really growing on me. To me it smells very pagan. It has lots of smokey, incensey, wood, a bit of a forest floor wet leaves smell, with soft violet in the background and a strong medicinal, herbal tang over the top. I wouldn't want to wear it where other people are in a confined space with me for very long, as it is so powerful. It feels like I am wearing something defensive rather than inviting, like it would ward off the plague. I would not have bought this having only tried it once, but having owned a bottle I am quite likely to buy another.

This one evokes the scent of a princely warrior—imagine historical figures like Robert the Bruce or fictional ones like Maximus Decimus Meridius. It carries a leathery, earthy, rugged character, yet manages to remain clean and refined, exuding an air of both strength and sophistication. Describing its intricacies could take all day, but to me, it holds something truly special. The fragrance is undeniably beautiful, and of all the perfumes in my collection, this is the one that prompts the most questions from ladies about what I’m wearing. 10/10

A fragrance that defies a Description. I own it for 2 weeks now and it is different every time I use it. A bit too much and you are in a heavy leather-violet cloud all day, annoying your colleagues. Today I used 2 small spritzes from a distance and for the first time I smell the sage and basil notes. It really is an olfactoric chameleon but a great one. As said before not for the faint-hearted but worth a try if you dare its complexity

A great leather based fragrance with an animalic and spicy accords. To me, it smells like a leather (with a fur on it) thrown straight into the fire, then taken out. That's it, burnt leather. Herbs make it even more interesting (mainly sage to my nose). Plus that musk, which turns the animalic mode to the maximum. Longevity and projection are through the roof. A great one. I love it and my co-workers hate it :D

Complex is one of my most favorite Leathers of all time!! To me it’s a very well crafted, well blended and beautiful leather with nuances of greenness!! To me it’s the best as far as pure leather go, Unlike Rich Mess by Ryan Richmond or Leather by Le Labo!! It’s worth checking out if you like your leather smooth & strong!! Duro, Tuscan Leather, Ombré Leather are all up there among the Elites just to name a few

First time smelling something like this, very herbal green smell that just reminds me of money, performance is out of the ball park........anyone who smells this will think you have money....but this is not for beginners who dont have confidence becuase you will definitely get a lot of attention wearing this because its just that different.

OMG wow, now this is what I call the real beast mode fragrance. The only fragrance in my collection which easily beats Amouage Interlude Man on performance. The fragrance is super manly with dark notes like leather, birch tar, woods and resins. This is definitely not for everyone and needs to be tested well before buying a full bottle.

2 sprays and I can barely breathe Lots of leather, bit smokey, some violet, some amber and a lemon type smell. Actually quite good. Dry down tops the opening. I agree with 3-4 hours very strong projection and last 12+ hours

Bombastic Oud with resins and herbs fresh &sweet in a unique way and smokey animalic very daring.However at this point in my journey with this price point i'll add this to my collection this is perfect for black tie!

As I can see it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, my mom and my friends don’t like it as well but I don’t care. This is one of my favorite perfumes. LOVE LOVE LOVE it and I will forever repurchase it

Boadicea nın bazı parfümlerini bir arkadaşımın kolleksiyonundan deneme fırsatım olmuştu. Etkilendiğimi söylemeliyim. Denediğim 3 parfümde oldukça başarılıydı. Hepsi güçlü, kalıcılığı başarılı, olgunlaşma süreci etkileyiciydi. Kısacası bu markanın oldukça iyi parfümleri olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Complex ise yukarda sıraladığım övgülerden sadece ultra uzun kalıcılık ve etrafınızı öldürecek derecede koku dağılımı ile öne çıkabilir. Bir kokuya güzel-kötü gibi sıfatlar kullanmak istemem ancak bu koku kötü. Deri notası, güzellik, güzel koku gibi kavramların yanına bile uğramıyor. O kadar baskın ki yukardaki listede görünen notaların tamamını o son derece şık şişenin içinde boğup öldürüyor. Alttaki bazı yorumlarda göreceğiniz gibi bir çok kişi bu parfümü adı gibi "complex" olduğunu söylüyor ki bu tespit tamamen abartı. Parfümün kompleks, karışık, derin vb. bir tarafı yok. Son derece sert ve kaba bir deri kokusu. Defalarca denedim, farklı mevsimlerde, havalarda. Sonuç değişmedi, ilk 1-2 dakikalık şaşkınlığın ardından deri sahneye çıkıyor ve sizi sürüm sürüm süründürüyor. Deri içerikli parfümleri seven bir arkadaşım da benim benzerim yorumlar yaptı. Bir derece hafifletilse, içine lavanta yada iris karışsa belki o zaman biraz kompleks olabilir ama bu hali ile değil. Dior, Leather Oud bu parfümün yanında kadife gibi kalıyor. Bence bu parfümün adı "Leather Absolute" olmalı. Deri kokusu düşkünleri için belki bu bir sanat eseri olabilir ama ben malesef ortada bir "eser" göremiyorum. Belki ağır olacak ama bu parfüm benim arasıra yaptığım parfüm denemerinde aldığım sonuçlara benziyor. İlk başta da söylediğim gibi Complex bu markayı temsil etmiyor. Umarım bundan sonraki tecrübem daha iyi olur.

I must admit that having always loved the legend of Boadicea, I was always going to try this brand out of I ever could. This is what I call a celebrity scent!! Whoaaa! I suppose in hindsight this was a challenging place to start. Upon opening this is one powerful brew. Basil & sage & resins are battling it out to be the boldest & most abrasive. I can smell some leather but it is either still being cured in strong chemicals or possibly even still on the cow as it does have a faint farm manure edge to it. After a while it changes to smell more like a campfire smoke. The smoke from green, damp wood. Possibly pine. So powerful is this scent that my mind tricked itself into hearing the crackle of the fire & feeling the ambient heat rise in my face. The leather disappeared in this stage. Thankfully it deepens & softens relatively quickly. Joining it later was a sweetish incense & more resin. The leather does come back, but it is not a refinded ladylike handbag kind of leather. It is more ripped off othe beast kind of raw, dirty leather, possibly smeared with the faintest trace of manure. It is actually quite scintillating. Later in the drydown a hint of marijuana creeps in. Overall, I found it to be quite an interesting & enjoyable olafactory adventure. I don't know if I would or even could wear it, it is VERY acrid & smokey. Perhaps if I apply a small dash to the wrists and waited a half hour before leavng the house...? If you like leather & want to try a truly uncivilised variety of it, then I thoroughly recommend Complex. PS - for scientific purposes I did try to get my man to try some of this unisex fragrance but he was being a big girl's blouse about it & refused.

I love leather scents and complexity (which the name offers) I'm also a huge fan of Boadicea the victorious but this stuff is truly atrocious! Complex is an abomination! I like to think I've broadened my olfactory horizons as much as possible now and I except some wacky juice but this is hideous! Awful, animal smell which I suppose is leathery but also herbal, smokey and thoroughly unusual. Oud, incense type resins and florals are present but seem to contribute to the perfect storm that is complex. I enjoy some hideously animal leathers too like Dior's Oud leather but this simply just doesn't work! I was really unlucky on the day I first tried this as I selected two fragrances to try on each wrist. The other was Masque Milano Montecristo which is a horribly animalic fragrance and Complex made that seem tolerable and almost nice. The silage and Longevity is UNBELIEVABLE it works it's way deep into your skin while creating a silage cloud at the same time. Needless to say it's not for me. Update: Have to say that upon further investigation and although I'm still not 100% on board...'hideous' was going a little far perhaps. The resins in this are of the highest quality and as such have an uber 'antique' vibe, very dusty, very smoky and full of character...like a broth or consommé absolutely packed full to the brim with flavour. Worth a second try because the earthiness of this is slightly more appealing this time around and the dryddown is almost pleasant but still not quite my thing. Boadicea is still one of my favourite houses, amazing quality and innovation among their vast range.

Herbs of various kinds can be found in their hut, all bottled and stored in a wooden cabinet. The cabinet itself, is made of precious woods, emanating an aroma in the kitchen area. This brothers are feared by many, as stories went around, that they are merciless beings. One day, a wild fire caught their wooden hut and burnt everything to ashes. The brother, the wooden furniture, animals and their furs and most of all the precious herbs. These 5 men did not go to heaven or hell, they remained roaming the woods, demonic spirits they are. None could get close to where the hut once stood erect, for evil is lurking. The aroma from the burnt hut fills the air for many months, pungent, over pouring and choking like. All this captured in to a bottle, strong, powerful, and not for the faint hearted. Complex – By : Boadicea the Victorious.

Complex is a leather with a very unique aroma and somewhat "strange". The opening is slightly cool (the rest is quite warm) feel soft citrus notes with the note detected basil and a background of very remarkable and intense leather. Immediately the notes of sage charge much interest, giving an herbal touch very marked resins and especially the leather acquiring a dense aroma, balsamic, leathery faceted something drug (at this stage is a rare aroma, which is not unpleasant but not very pretty). From the middle notes until final drying and a very marked by the well modulated incenses aroused my interest as toasted nuances that occur on the leather smoked side, the oud background and on a musk with Animalicos touches is detected that is the original. The medium-high quality but there is an excess in the use of synthetic and duration and good wake. Complex with that herbal ochentero facet has a point but a kind of remake or very current reversal. According leather, oud, incense is very well managed, but that point "drug" does not convince me one bit. Rating: 5.5

I did not know the reputation of this perfume as I innocently sprayed it on a card at the department store. The first few seconds were very different from the rest of the house, so I decided to pump 3 sprays on my skin. WTF did I get myself into? It's tame for about 30 seconds before it explodes with oud, skank, acetate, sour herbs, leather and smoke. Super potent! Yeah, this is a challenging scent but if you are used to trying fragrances outside the box (western) this will not kill you. The herbs, greens, and violet are the only things that keep it from going completely off the rails. It eventually calms down to oud, leather, herbs, and peat. But, it is suprisingly knarly, and incredibly strong. I wear challenging fragrances for myself if like them, and I'd wear this...but probably not in public. A decant is all I would ever need. This perfume is for someone eccentric, that is not interested is using perfume for seduction or mass appeal in any capacity 😄. Points for being artistic! Scent 5.5/10 Performance 10/10

When I read all those reviews (all that whining how dirty that EDP smells) I thought that finally there is a scent for me. I have to say, after trying it out, that I am little dissapointed. Don't get me wrong - it's a very nice fragrance, but nothing even close to savage, raw, animalic scent. What dominates, starting from top notes and throught the whole projection during the evening, is sage or other herbal notes (I can't really tell which one excactly). I haven't felt any tar, gasoline, civet (or other fecal note) and leather was very mild, on the verge of sensibility. To sum it up - very nice frag but not what I was looking for, and I don't know if it's worth to spend 150 euro for that. Had it been a gift I would be happy, but probably I'm not going to buy the whole vial.

A dense and smoky herbal leather scent, this is a very polarizing beauty. Very earthy and reminiscent of a medicine chest a medieval apothecary would carry with him filled with herbs and potions. The perfume begins with a dense cloud of basil and sage to get to a heart that comprises of leather and musk. It finally settles into a strange base that is comprised of violet, oud and incense with the leather hovering prominently in the background. This is not meant for the faint hearted at all. Unisex with very strong sillage, projection and sillage (lasts over a day on your skin and even after two showers), this is your complete antithesis of a safe scent. I found it to be a dangerous, exciting, mysterious and sensual dark beauty. Enjoy!

Now that I joined Fragrantica I re-post my review of Complex by Boadicea the Victorious. I bought Complex just today in my favourite perfumery. It remembers to me "Duro" by Nasomatto for its leathery note, but in this case is a more wearable leather, and more animalic, maybe because in Complex there is a strong, very intriguing musk note. "Duro" remembers to me a leather jacket, while "Complex" remembers to me a living animal. Is also very remarkable the incense note in this perfume. I will not wear it in office time but I think it's an interesting choice for a sexy date :)

First time i tried this perfume was beginning of 2013 and i didn't like it at all i bought it form Italy that time it was too strong and stink in same time didn't believe that someone would make such smell and perfume two years later i tried it and i bet that the BOADICEA did change the formula to make it and acceptable as perfumes. now its kind of ok perfume but not nice smell at all but defiantly there is some tastes will like it as its little close to segregate smell To most people i do not recommend this perfume nothing nice about it except it last for long time

This is indeed insane. The strongest perfume ive smelled after Followed by Kerosene. The opening is really green and strong , do NOT smell your arm close after spraying it. It almost smells like a vomit in the beginning but it dissapears fast. Then, it becomes like a mixture of Cuoium and Interlude, but x 100 . As they use real oud in here it can be VERY difficult for some people, so try before you buy. Anyways , absolute powerhouse 10/10 for leather and oud lovers. Gourmand guys? Don’t even try it

You most certainly have to like leather fragrances or you aren't going to like this one. Last 8 to 12 hours on me. Moderate to strong probably 3 to 4 ft bubble I would guess. I get leather, some sage, and like gas or petroleum smell. I like leather and weird so I like it. I like this one better than the 2020 complex, and it last longer on me. Similar to cuoium but not the same and I have both and don't feel they are to close to have both if you really like this type of DNA.

It is strong, pungent and complex indeed. Massive leather, basil and incense. Very smokey and leathery. Lasts forever. Not for the faint of heart but well blended.

Smells like a leather boot that’s just trotted in some soil, and I mean that in a strange, complimentary way. Way too hard to pull off as something I’d wear though

A rubbery, incense-y, smoky leather fragrance with a hint of oud. I don't get the resinous note at all. But damn, this juice is extremely powerful. It's just very strange - I'm repulsed by it at one sniff and curious about it at another. Beneath all its layers is a sense of softness, perhaps the violet or something. It's barely detectable, honestly, and the leather and oud overpower everything else. But layers get slowly unwrapped and you start to explore the other accords, and then get wrapped back up and the leather and oud is all you smell again. It's confusing, and I don't know how I feel about it. I will say the name is very fitting. It's definitely complex. I love it and hate it at the same time. Honestly, it feels like a toxic relationship - definitely some revolting aspects but something in there just keeps you attracted. I can't form a concrete opinion just yet. I don't think I'll be buying a full-sized bottle though.

I like the opening; it's very potent; it's green, smoky, leathery, and smells rather like a contemporary niche perfume. I like the dry down less, as it smells like a lot of leather perfumes I smelled before. It smells like a time gone by, like the 20s perhaps. It's leathery, herbal, sour, almost WC-like at times, but in the right dose I'll say; not as stinky as some old perfume in this genre can be. I don't think they listed all the ingredients, I think there's carnations, and a bit of patchouli too. Definitely for a mature, confident person with lots of character.

Super funny... I was able to purchase a decant of this (would happily buy more, hmu!). I remembered smelling it two years ago and just always wanted some. I know that the dirt smell is what some people hate, but I LOVE how it just smells of dirt, and a tiny bit of costus root. The huge, powerful dirt smell makes me feel powerful. It makes me think of brown and black, and I like it. I applied it around my fiance, hoping he wouldn't hate it. He sniffs. "What're you wearing?" "It's called Complex." "Complex. I like it. It smells like cocaine!" Lol. That's my boy.

Boadicea The Victorious Complex is the scandalous bad-boy scent of the Boadicea collection. To me it is bottled essence of rotting bloody Zombie (but I could go with Pinhead the Hellraiser too). Despite the many warnings below I got a sample of this, thankfully not a full bottle. The top smells powerfully metallic and musty, with a side order of slightly rotten corpse that met its demise in an electrical fire. Perhaps the perfumer was trying to capture the scent of a corpse-filled Londinium after Boadicea's rebels razed and burned it. To me, Complex is bold and remarkable and unique, and ... awful. I love strong distinctive scents but this is ridiculous. I will not get the opportunity to describe its continued development because I will scrub it off. If that fails I may amputate my hand above the wrist.

(This review is for Eau de Perfume) COMPLEX is another fragrance from Boadicea the Victorious that smells rather masculine to me. I was very excited that my dear husband agreed to participate in the testing experiment again. We were both almost scared by the strong and rather strange beginning. It was green and herbal but not in a pleasant way. My husband commented that it smelled to him like decaying leaves with a hint of woods. This herbaceous weird note persisted in the heart notes with rather bizarre metallic accord. Perhaps it is supposed to be leather? The heart and base notes smell way better on my dear husband than on me but it was still not something that we would ever wear. COMPLEX definitely fits my category of unusual and weird perfumes. I suggest sampling before buying.

Very strong dry, herbal, rooty opening....with a huge amount of butch leather taking over like a Viking raid...I don't want to meet the man who can pull off this scent...Very very dry leather...this thing wont let up, still very very dry leather...this is harsh...a while later this one is drying down, finally, the dry harshness is softening up a little bit and some kind of floral is joining in...nevermind, it tricked me, its not even close to drying down...I don't have the time to torture my nose any more with this one. The harshness is back. I think I'll be an old man before this beast is finished. Definitely not my style. This one may have more power than Interlude Man!!!

Got a sample of this and ugh!!!! I had to give it away. It is wayyyyy too strong and almost pungent. Did not like this at all. And I usually find ouds tolerable too. But this one smelt like body odor and heat! 😭😭😭😭 Do not overspray this one if you choose to get it. It is absolutely beast mode in terms of projection. When I sprayed it some of it got on fingers and then my nose when I sniffed my hand. I went to wash my hands and face multiple times, but I could still smell it. 😂😂😭😭 It's that strong. This may perform better in places where there's winter. But I live in a tropical country, so it's not a match at all.

Noped out after 3 wearings over the course of a month. Just can't do it. This is dirty, bitter, animalic leather. It reminds me of the overwhelming smells I would pick up as a child when smelling items at a native American leatherware, belt buckle, and tobacco kiosk at the mall in the 1970s but amplified with alien herbs. There is no appealing heart of gold here. It's just a grizzled old man smell - I imagine this would appeal to the kind of man that would wear English leather and fall asleep with a lucky strike cigarette lit on a park bench with a bespoke straw cowboy hat on.

First, this is a LOUD fragrance. It is very green and sour so it comes across strangely with the leather and incense. A blast of herbs, freshly cut, sharp and bitter. It's unisex leaning masculine. If you must sample or try a decant then very well. But do not blind buy a bottle of this. To say it's a challenging fragrance is an understatement. Because, quite simply, it is Complex. Try Hero by Boadicea instead. Now that's a fantastic fragrance from the same house.

I tried it on paper in Harrods and it smelled amazing. The next day I tried it on skin and it was repulsive; I'm always trying to find my limits with perfume and for example I really like OP Cuoium which is in the same ballpark, but this was just too much, it's rancid. I sprayed one spray on my hand and an hour later people some distance from me commented that I smelled like a tramp. A disappointing no from me.

Very, very smoky and addictive and I loved this for the first 10 minutes, but after that it turned to such a scrubber for me that I almost screamed trying to scrub it off. What was wrong? I have no idea. It smells like leather to me, yes, but bad kind of leather. The kind of leather which reminds of mechanics leather jacket with some petroleum on it. And I do not get ANY flowers at all.
