Oltremare

Oltremare is a symphony of bright, uplifting citruses, tangy rhubarb, calming green tea, aromatic juniper berries, breathtakingly beautifully done hyacinth note, clean, fresh patchouli, with a smooth, creamy, musky, soft, woody base. The uniqueness of Oltremare in a sea of fresh, marine/mineral, aquatic perfumes that flooded the market in the last few years consists in adding to the plethora of citruses and green tea, a more unconventional note of rhubarb and the symbol of spring for me, blue hyacinth. The result is almost magical. So distinct and unique that I personally can’t think from the top of my head about something similar to Oltremare. Unisex scent with moderate presence on the skin. Very mass appealing perfume! Bois 1920 turns quickly into one of my favourite Italian niche houses!! The more I sample their fragrances, from all sorts of the scent profiles, the more I realise they have incredible perfumes in all genres. And they’re soo underrated!

2020 update: Recently gave this another try. I feel a real renewed appreciation for this fragrance. It's more unisex than I remember, more complex and interesting too. It definitely wears like a fresh male scent, but drys down with more woody notes and the tea aspect becomes more noticeable... The top notes are definitely the show stopper here. Very refreshing, clean and earthy. I'll probably have to pick a bottle up in the future, gonna have to give this one a new 8/10 2017: "Memories of endless thoughts unfold before the sea, where anything disappears. Only quietness remains." This is something uniquely interesting. It’s lovely. It’s by the sea. It’s in the open air. It’s deep in the earth. It starts vibrantly, salty and bright with citrus and mellows into something sweeter and floral. It is a cool toned scent, like relaxing against a cool window with a cup of hot tea, well balanced. 7.5/10

Nose Note #1036 This is simply one of the most beautiful mens freshies that I've smelled. Imagine Arden Green Tea, but more masculine and strong, or Wulong Cha, but less sharp. Just in the middle. Or sort of like Kenzo L'eau pour Homme par Kenzo, but much stronger and more tea-like. As often with Bois 1920 - the composition is immaculate, very well done. More masculine, but not so much. Performance is good for a "super" freshie, i.e. it's meant to be a light freshie, as compared to, for example, Sauvage which is bombastic and not literally a freshie, or Invictus or God of Fire. 9/10

i could smell this fragrance before i even walked into the store, i go up to the fragrance counter and ask the guy what it was and he pointed towards this and said half the associates in the store were wearing this, it was the day it was re-released. anyways i tried a sample and i was in love, this is the best Tea fragrance ever and it smells so classy luxurious and sexy at the same time. its pretty under rated and not as mainstream which i love about it because no one knows what im wearing even when i tell them. its so exclusive i love it. bottle 0346/1920

I got a 2ml official sample vial and tested it on a tester strip, so impressed and ended up checking out a full 100ml bottle right after that. This is just so beautiful. The smell of tannic acid and the bitterness (quite prominent) of crumbled black tea leaves in a glass of iced tea, with the aroma of lemon slices on top. I definitely have experienced something like this in my early life (and I finally figured out what it is: a type of iced tea that was quite popular in my middle school, but has since gone out of fashion). Unisex scent. Perfect for summer.

This is an excellent summer cologne with the usual suspects of citrus and neroli being replaced by rhubarb and tea. The rhubarb gives this one an especially zingy twist and great freshness. The drydown blends in easily with a woody and musky feeling, but still keeps the scent light. The bergamot and white musk ambergris gives me a feeling that this is a pimped version of Mugler's Cologne with high quality ingredients. Very good longevity for a fresh summer scent, I got a good 7-8 hours from it. Highly recommended.

Oltremare by Bois 1920 captures the feeling of being by the ocean, just listening to the waves. It starts bright and fresh with lemon, lime, and bergamot—like a quick, refreshing breeze. Then comes the herbal part with eucalyptus and basil, cool and calming, like breathing in sea air. There’s also green tea and jasmine in the middle, soft and peaceful. Finally, it dries down to warm amber, musk, and cedarwood. It’s a quiet, fresh fragrance, perfect for anyone who loves that calm, seaside vibe.

Love love love this one! Bois 1920 is such an underrated house, imo. Oltremare is one of my favorites for the warmer times of the year, and I will always own a bottle of this one. The citruses together with the rhubarb is such a great combo. Longevity is really good as well, especially for a freshie. Worth noting is that I'm referring to the EDP version. The EDT version, to me, smells totally different and is far from being as good as the EDP.

That sharp citrus & rhubarb in the opening had me initially fearful that this would be a scrubber. Came across as too old school like some vintage 80s fougere. Luckily, after 10 mins the harshness subsides and you're left with a lemoncello iced tea combo that is quite heavenly on hot days. There's enough complexity to keep this interesting and thankfully there's no off or challenging notes.

Blasts of bright citruses at first, red tea is the most prominent note here on my skin, followed by rhubarb. Creamy sandalwood is noticable and blends well with the prominent notes. Smooth transition of notes within the first hour. Perfect for spring and summer. Casual wear and very comforting smell. I get 7hrs longevity with 2hrs moderate projection

This is spring and summer in a bottle. Bright juicy citrus notes and juniper up top with tea, sandalwood musk and amber to give it just the right amount of body. I wish I got the mintyness of the geranium. That would've taken this one to the stratosphere. I get 6-7hrs with it. Overall, great scent that garners compliments. 8/10...full bottle worthy

This is a beautiful aquatic. As others have said, it’s not dynamic but I’ll argue the position it occupies is elite. This is a layering superstar, I added Wulong Cha and Bohemian Lime. My shirt smelled like heaven and it was ripped from my body quickly. I’m going to need a new sample very soon. 8/10.

On my second bottle. Absolutely fantastic summer freshie! The tea and violet leaf provides a nice cooling effect while the citrus and rhubarb gives it an uplifting and playful character. When it comes to fresh fragrances, the only house that can give Bois1920 a run for its money is Creed.

Really nice blend, great performance and silage. Because is a bit expensive and the fact that nobody talks about it makes it really exclusive. In the same ball park as Channel Allure Edition Blanch and Guerlain L'homme Ideal Cologne. But better, much better, in every category. Love it.

My initial take on first spray was, "this smells like hairspray." I gave it a few minutes and the rest was very pleasant. The Rhubarb takes front stage with the citrus. Very different than your average summer citrus freshy. It's perfectly unisex and has gotten good reactions.

Without a doubt the best blue fragrance I've ever smelled. The unfortunate part is the longevity. I need this fragrance so bad that I may have to drop the big bucks and buy it. This is one amazing fragrance.

ngl this smells like torino21 but less sour, less linear and more sophisticated . the drydown smells divine, like a cold red ice lemon tea , tart citrus blended with the highest quality red tea and ice ...

Fresh, a little sweet fragrance - love from the first inhale. Reminds me of fresh, cold tea from fridge. Must have in the summer time. I will necessarily purchase it soon or later.

This opens with a rounded, sweet, juicy, fruity accord. I detect primarily lime, tea, and that fruity accord (presumably rhubarb mixed with the other citruses). I don't get any of the sharpness that I usually find with citrus-heavy fragrances, though perhaps there is a touch of tang from the rhubarb. I think lime is probably the only note I would have been able to pick out, had I not seen the list on Fragrantica. On my skin, it doesn't evolve much from there. It is pretty linear, but pleasant. Longevity is impressive for a fresh scent with lots of citrus, although I find the projection and sillage difficult to assess, since it is one of those fragrances that seems to go AWOL periodically before reappearing again randomly. What is most striking about this fragrance to me is the *feel* of it: soft and billowy and diffusive. It feels like a cool mist settling on my skin. To me, this texture pulls it a bit toward the feminine side, but overall I would say this is quite gender-neutral. The combination of the diffusiveness, the come-and-go sillage, and the excellent longevity (for a freshie) all point toward what is likely an extensive use of synthetics in this fragrance. However, I wouldn't say that it smells "artificial," which I associate with harsh edges and metallic tints. This is the opposite of harsh. OTOH, I wouldn't say that it is natural-smelling, either, since it seems rather abstract and impressionistic in style, whereas I think of "natural" smelling fragrances as more realistic renditions of source materials. Overall, it's a pleasant and relatively long-lasting fresh and sweet type of fragrance, but not especially groundbreaking. It's kind of a "meh" for me, although I'm going to keep using my decant throughout the summer, and we'll see if my feelings change as the hotter months move in.

This is one of my best summer scents. Uncommon smell, ozonic, citrusy, green, spicy but very smooth, versatile, refreshing and uplifting, everything. It reminds me slightly the Creed Millésime Impérial but it goes to different direction, more playful and vivid. And I get mild vibes from Givenchy Insense Ultramarine & Kenzo pour Homme. It smells more expensive than it is. Excellent performance for a warm weather scent with moderate sillage. At the opening for a few minutes the projection is heavy. After that it looses power suddenly and become a moderate one. Dominant notes are : citruses (bergamot & lime mainly with mild lemon, smooth citruses though, rare quality), strong but smooth rhuburb, very strong mate, strong green tea, mild geranium and very strong hyacinth, very mild juniper, the rest notes are very mild. At the late dry down there's nice white musk which blends perfectly with the smooth caracter of the scent and sandalwood. I do not get violet leaf but there is a faint violet vibe. Tea is the key factor here. An elegant summer scent with a luxurius vibe. Not unique or groungbreaking but masterfully blended with high quality feeling. Highly recommended.

Tried this at Barneys, where I was told it was a limited edition. It has amazing staying power, seemed to last at least 8 hours after it was sprayed! Smelled tangy and wonderful, definitely made my head turn at first. The sales guy mentioned a tea ingredient which I don't see listed here, but could definitely smell an influence like that. I liked it, but I didn't fall in love with it, but it is a beautifully well done scent, just wasn't my particular thing.

LOVED this out of all the rest from this brand I tried. I did not quite expect it to be not aquatic at all. Verde di Mare seem to be the 'marine' piece of this brand. I guess it has played the role, so they don't need another one. My impression of this is that, it definitely smells like the bottle. A calm scent, not blue in its notes, but chill like the color blue. Not to mention this bottle is absolutely beautiful.

The 2 reviews are a perfect summary of my opinion: it is a wonderful smell but more masculine than feminine. You can wear it especially when it is warm/hot outside. Bois 1920 never disappoints me - so far. I like the well balanced composition of fruits and the somewhat tangy ingredients - nothing is overpowering; just a pleasant smell.

#991 in my "Tour de Fragrance" First time I've encountered a scent that opens rhubarb-dominant. As a child I was traumatized when dad went to the store to get a strawberry pie for my birthday and came home with strawberry rhubarb. I marveled that some master of evil had conceived something so unnatural and demonic as to put a noxious red celery into a strawberry pie. Never gone near it since. So I was prepared to hate this scent. While I don't hate it, I don't love it. It's different from the hundreds of smell-alike freshies I've tried out. The rhubarb dominance dies down pretty quickly and what's left is mostly tea. With the exception of Creed Silver Mountain Water there are not many scents with tea notes that have won me over. Probably because I drink a ton of the stuff already, so smelling like a tea tin is just not something I'm into. This is certainly car pool, elevator and small office safe. It's not a strong performer, like a lot of freshies, so you'd respray at lunch. But for me this isn't something I find attractive or want to smell all day. At best I'm indifferent to it. So it won't be a bottle buy for me.

It opens as a strong 10/10 citrus and tea fragrance. Sweet orange, lemon, lime, and rhubarb, blended with a lovely floral green tea. It really is a perfect fragrance, for the first 5 minutes. Unfortunately, on my skin it turns on me. It becomes a smell like soft rubber. it becomes a bit sickening, and i get nauseous after about 30 minutes. So, sadly, i had to scrub it off. That said, this is probably a skin chemistry thing. Most likely this isn't something most people have to worry about. Personal score: 5/10. The first 5 minutes are 10/10, after 5 minutes, it's a 0/10... 😔

The fragrance is nice, but unfortunately it has that same dry leaf tobacco/tea note that's in agrumi that I am not a fan of, and although not as dominant a note in this fragrance, it's still a large part of it's make up and becomes more prevalent as it dries down. Also I have no idea what people are talking about, this doesn't have a faintness of similarity with torino 21. Objectively it's not a bad fragrance and is pretty unique as far as freshies go, but because of that note (is it the rhuburb?) it's a no for me.

Nice opening but quickly turns linear. I've smelt this before, can't think what it was though - Torino 21 perhaps? Either way, not FBW sadly, very hard to find good summer frags these days...

Soapy, fresh out of the shower kinda scent.

Equal weight in the first sniff, between a strong tea note and a bergamot/lemon accord, which together give a tang. Be warned: the green lemon and bergamot combine, to give that citrus peel note like male sweat, especially in the first 15 mins, and it can smell downright odd on a woman. I persisted, noting that Bois' card stated "for men" although on this page, it's Unisex. Anyhow the rhubarb appears after a few more minutes, then the whole thing becomes gentler, with more tea, a hint of floral and a hint of musk. Quiets down as a seamless blend, no progression after that. I'll pass, but fans of bergamot/tea may want to give it a try.....

I did not like this scent at all. I think it is more for a man, than a woman. You can buy this scent at Barneys. It is a lovely bottle.

Opens with a nuclear blast of citrus and rhubarb - almost photorealistic, crispy, crunchy rhubarb. This is an incredibly tangy, zesty fragrance citrus fragrance with a warm base of amber, sandalwood, and patchouli. A bit of ozone from the violet, a bit of floral, and an herbal quality from the tea and mate. It does smell similar to other fragrances I've smelt before, but I can't quite place which. I think that it might be a female fragrance that it reminds me of, as this definitely leans more feminine to my nose, though it's still quite unisex. This is definitely evocative of dark, deep blue waters in the Mediterannean, and it's fantastically refreshing. Will be wearing this a lot in the hot weather. 7.5/10

A rather peculiar fragrance. This is not about the sea, but about an intense, acidic, neon-fruity experience. The scent feels almost “fluorescent” in character. Too vividly fruity for a traditional masculine fragrance, too assertive for a feminine one - a typical unisex composition, belonging fully to neither side... That said, it is playful and optimistic. A fragrance about relaxation and carefree frivolity. It belongs somewhere at a resort, where it would feel perfectly at home alongside equally neon-colored beach cocktails. It comes from the same league as such beach-party stars as Batucada and Pacific Lime, and the like.

I love the sea, it's clear from my reviews by now, and something I've done since I was a child is observe it. See how far its immensity goes, and imagine what lies beyond. Beyond that line that seems so close but is actually infinite, which opens up to a totally different world, perhaps with someone on the other side with mine same thoughts. Oltremare is this: feeling the freshness, given by citrusy and sparkling notes, and then settling on clean and green ones, immersing yourself in nature. A very pleasant fragrance, for spring or summer, long lasting sillage. “Terrace on the sea” painted by Matteo Massagrande.

Outstanding fragrance!....fruity, with a bit of a woodsy base. Somewhat reminds me of D&G l'imperatrice but with more cedar or at least what smells like cedar. Both men and women will adore this!! Sillage is confusing, at points throughout the fragrance where you think that you cannot detect this, however, every so often you get a whiff and determine its still there. Longevity is great; 6-8 hours flat! In fact, I just purchased a backup bottle just in case...

Saw someone saying it smells like iced tea and it's a great smell in that vibe. Before reading it I didn't understand what I was smelling, not aquatic not too herbal. Slightly herbal and barely minty citrus ice tea. Not sweet or cheap smelling in any way Actually such a unique DNA but stays in the freshie line for summertime. Definitely Torino 21 esque but not mint focused, I prefer it more actually

The other reviews are about right. This isn't my kind of scent at all - I'd rather wear a dollar store scent that is more to my liking, to be honest (and I'm sure some people feel that way about the scents that I like most). For example, for a scent with a tea-like quality I'd go for Bulletproof or White Tea by L'Occitane.

This cologne reminds me of Hermès Epice Marine but has greater depth, longevity, and Sillage. It is only when all the notes are combined that the aquatic formula becomes apparent. This is amongst the aquatic colognes that trade spicy for the traditional sweetness in other aquatics.

-A dry, woody scent. -Nondescript. -I expected a fresher scent based on the notes and packaging. -I guess I'm more into citrus gourmands than woody citrus scents. (Xerjoff-Casamorati Lira, for instance) -Dries down to a very masculine scent. -Not fbw. (-)

Yes.. Its High quality juice and it smells Great.... On A Woman......The opening with the white musk is way to Fem for me....Its So Fresh and young....It's A wonderful feminine fragrance....
