Coco Hinoki

I love this scent! You'd think the hinoki + eventual smoke dry-down would be a bit too harsh for wear outside of summer/spring, but it's the opposite. The coconut evens out both and makes everything come together beautifully. The first smell was a bit much for me, but as I wore it throughout the week it grew on me. I keep a travel-size in my bag, but don't think I would purchase the full size. While the scent is lovely, the longevity and projection just aren't there. As a result, I find myself having to reapply more than I'd like, and given the price point, it's not worth it.

Just got mine in today and I can definitely say this is one of my more interesting scents. From afar, I smell candied pear and coconut milk. Once I get up close, I pick up dense amber, the Hinoki, and light smoke. I am someone who enjoys wearing masculine leaning fragrances that has a light touch of feminine, but this one is so perfectly balanced with its play on distance. Coco Hinoki is honestly very comparable to Eternal Roots by Orabella, as they both have heavily contrasting sides; smoke, suede, Hinoki etc. vs. coconut, lychee, pear. Full bottle worthy? No.... Travel will suffice!

Definitely not a blind buy- I love the potential of this fragrance but it’s just not meant for some people, me included. My wife and I both tried this, and on her, it dried down to a nice and rich, sweet/smoky musk as expected. On me, it dried to literal campfire smoke, like I sat by a fire for days and almost had a meaty smell.

I don't know what I was expecting when I tried it at the flagship, but the scent is mesmerizing. It is an odd mix... I can smell the woody Hinoki and the creamy coconut but there is also a refreshing mint in there. Mint is not listed anywhere so perhaps it is my brain filling in something when it mixed both scents. Either way, I don't think I've experienced such a combination before in a fragrance.

Sweeter copy-and-paste of Hinoki Fantôme. It doesn’t smell bad, but it’s identical to it. I own Hinoki Fantôme and loved it, but having two of the same is redundant. I would buy multiple bottles if they combine Hinoki Fantome with Woodphoria!

Not sure how I feel about this. I don’t really smell any pear, the coconut is faint. It’s very smoky and almost plastic smelling? Eh I probably won’t keep my travel size. Definitely not gourmand leaning in any way

In agreement with the review below me, this scent smells so different on paper vs on skin. I tried this in Sephora and loved how creamy and smoky it smelled on the paper, but once I applied it to my skin, I could only smell the smoke, which was a bit spicy. And as time went on, the spicy smokiness just got stronger. I also made my boyfriend try it on his skin and it was the same. Too bad, because the notes looked amazing and the bottle is also gorgeous.

Coco Hinoki smells dramatically different on skin than it does on paper. On a tester strip, the fragrance initially presents itself as creamy and airy, with the coconut milk and pear appearing soft and approachable. On skin, however, those notes practically vanish. I could barely detect the coconut milk and did not perceive the pear at all once sprayed directly onto my body. Instead, the fragrance immediately opened with musk, followed closely by the smoke accord and black amber. The result was not a deep, cozy smokiness, but a sharp, piercing smokiness that became increasingly dominant as the fragrance developed. Rather than creating atmosphere or warmth, the smoke felt abrasive and overpowering. The hinoki is the greatest disappointment here. Hinoki is naturally a subtle wood note — dry, aromatic, meditative, and soft. In theory, it should have brought balance and tranquility to the composition. In practice, it is almost completely erased by the aggressive smoke and amber structure. I could not meaningfully detect the hinoki at all on skin. The tiare flower was one of the only softer notes that remained perceptible throughout the wear. It lingered faintly underneath the smoke, adding a creamy tropical floral nuance in the background, but even that note struggled to survive beneath the sharp amber-smoke combination. Overall, Coco Hinoki feels misleadingly named. The fragrance suggests a creamy coconut-hinoki composition, but on skin it wears more like a sharp smoky musk with traces of tiare flower hidden underneath. Those sensitive to smoke accords, heavy musks, or sharp amber bases may find the composition overwhelming and structurally unbalanced.

As a brand, I like Boy Smells. I think they make a lot of unique scents and I'm usually interested in at least sampling what they have to offer. That said, I hated Hinoki Fantome, the old formulation anyway. I found it unwearable, but I always wondered if it could be layered with something to improve it. Well, enter Coco Hinoki...from what I understand, it is a blend of Hinoki Fantome and Coco Cream (which I have not tried). On my skin, I get a creamy coconut milk, clean musk, and a touch of smoke. As it dries, I do get a pop of pear, here and there, which provides a little sweetness. I don't get any tiare thankfully, because I'm not a fan. Overall, this is solid. It smells nice, but unusual...you won't really smell like everyone else. It's soft, cozy, and comfortable, but distinct enough to make me pay attention.
