Solar Drip

This arrived in the mail Saturday so I figured I’d give ‘er a spin. This isn’t a brand that’s ever interested me, nor is it anything remotely similar to my preferred iris, incense, lavender, leather, cardamom types of profiles (something more complex, with depth). I’ve sampled the whole Boy Smells house, though. [I sample as much as I can for sport — it’s a hobby] This was cheap enough, especially when stacked with a random 20% off code I fetched on Google, so I bought the full size. It’s actually quite decent (pleasant even) for a synthetic bomb. It lines right up with the listed notes and turned out being a much welcomed, uplifting summer fragrance during a bitter, cold day. The mango is the most prominent of the fruits. It’s very soft and smooth (not to be confused with creamy) for having such heavy hitting citruses, which I appreciate. The base notes blend together well and the mango stays around throughout the full duration. I think this would’ve been better without the orange blossom. I’m pretty it’s going to be the note that gets this labeled as ‘feminine.’ I personally enjoy ‘feminine’ forward fragrances on men. This isn’t complex, but that’s typically what pulls in the most compliments. Many of us know the feeling of wearing an offensively expensive banger that’s never been complimented and then pulling in 15 the same day wearing some basic Glossier You (which I bought before learning of their morally loose past, racism, bullying, etc. in regards to the mistreatment of their employees, don’t come for me). I wear fragrance for myself, though, so I don’t particularly care if anyone compliments my perfume. It has a pretty impressive projection and silage alike (and I applied a poorly controlled spray* to each wrist and another to the back of my neck). It lasted a surprising 12 hours and was still very detectable, alas, I needed to take my shower-bath combo and go to bed. I avoid spraying areas that fall under or near my nose to avoid olfactory fatigue and be able to enjoy my fragrances throughout the day. This is strong enough it would’ve irritated me if I sprayed it on my chest or sides of my neck. I had to cone back and edit to put emphasis on the performance. She’s got the energy of a Vegas go-go dancer. Strong ankles! *I do not like the atomizers. There’s very little room for control and they come out in a burst so strong that the first spray on my wrist actually had enough liquid to cause a drip to run down the side. I do like the bottle aesthetic and that’s the first thing that caught my eye with this brand. It definitely has that quality in which you may find your mood lifting when catching a breeze of your own perfume. With that said; don’t expect a photorealistic anything, this isn’t that or even close. I noticed this does smell very similar to something I own or had sampled. So I started flipping through my sample binders after checking the suspects in my collection (Unsettled, Mango Skin, etc.). I found the culprit in my samples. Yara Tous. 😬 I decided to compare them on a paper tester, skin and fabric. The first 30-45 minutes they’re strikingly similar so much that Random_Influencer_1830 would call it a dupe. Tous is warmer and, in my opinion, smells as cheap as it is (sorry). But if you like that profile, you’ll really love this. I hate it and kind of like this, though there’s a 100% chance this will not be in my rotation and 90% chance it will be rehomed. This will likely be well-received by surrounding noses; assuming you do NOT overspray it (as unfortunately mentioned). In the hands of a nose-blind over-sprayer or excessive layering queen/king, this could be suffocating/nauseating; so it’s best to only do those things when you don’t plan to be around innocent, unsuspecting bystanders. It has a cloud-like, spun sugar sweetness to it that makes me happy about not spraying more than I did. I assume whoever said this was lemonade ice cream and sunscreeny is also who added Bombshell Sundrenched in the ‘reminds me of’ area (which it is not even remotely similar to). I’m thinking they may be experiencing parosmia and their nose is having an issue interpreting the ambrette or ambroxan. Ambrette can come off as sweat-adjacent (if you will) because it overlaps with natural odor chemistry. It contains ambrette with (fatty) skin-like facets that resemble skin lipids. On some skin, it can lean into sour-milk/sweat territory. It might be a permanent issue where avoiding the nite is ideal or an easy fix with using different hygiene items (body wash/lotion). It’s quite common and a lot of people get frustrated and think it smells like body odor on them. Ambroxan can cause the same sour-like misinterpretation, albeit not as often and is usually more metallic and screechy, sometimes salty versus dank and musty. I’m not being rude, by the way - it’s hard to convey a tone in writing. Just trying to be helpful. It’s similar to people who experience parosmia and smell cat urine instead of blackcurrant, burning rubber instead of saffron, playdoh instead of vanilla, pickles instead of sandalwood and so forth. I have hyperosmia; so notes I’m not fond of uppercut me and sabotage fragrances I know I’d love in their absence. Plus, fragrance (like art, which I think it qualifies as) is totally subjective. Excuse typos or grammatical errors. I just got an unexpected guest and have no time to check. Toodleooooo!

Starts sharp and citrusy but quickly turns into this really beautiful and slightly floral and sweet linen scent. Not like a laundry detergent linen smell, but something very warm and cozy and comforting. Finishes out with a bit of vanilla and sandalwood; overall a really nice fragrance. It's a skin scent with about two to three hours of longevity at best, but that scent is just so good.

Very bright and (unsurprisingly) musky fragrance. I love it, it reminds me Toy 2 Pearl a little bit and grape soda.

Sweet, citrusy, musky, warm, ambery, aldehydic, radiant, feminine, sensual flirty, playful, charming, whimsical, inviting, comforting, nostalgic This has an almost sweet tarts-like except citrusy scent to it, which I really enjoy! It’s nice and light. I don’t get much mango, but I do get the citrusy notes. The radiant orange blossom, slightly salty, aldehydic, and mineral sand, and soft, fresh linen come through with a citrusy touch as it starts drying down. Once it’s dried down it reads as more amber-y and musky, although it still has a citrus-y scent as well as the linen and sand. Overall, I do like it! Oddly enough I found this to be slightly reminiscent of one of my favorites - GdT Celeste. They’re nothing close to identical, but they both have somewhat of a sweet tarts scent to them. I get moderate performance with Solar Drip. The longevity is about 5-6 hours on my skin, and, and projection is intimate to moderate as it radiates out about an arm’s length from me. I’m a huge fan of beachy/coconut scents, and while this doesn’t have any coconut, it does have somewhat of a beachy vibe. Imagine yourself lounging poolside at a clothing-optional resort in Palm Springs. A fruity cocktail in hand, towels warmed by the sun, and citrus trees lining the property in full bloom create a serene atmosphere. A gentle breeze carries the scent of sunscreen and sweat. This is Solar Drip. This fragrance evokes the essence of a bottled summer vacation, but it distinguishes itself from typical beachy scents by omitting coconut and pineapple notes. The initial burst of mango, pomelo, and lemon creates a crisp and invigorating opening. I believe pomelo holds a special place as Boy Smells’ signature note. Their use of this citrus fruit adds a radiant brightness to their fragrances. As the scent wears, it settles into the orange blossom and solar notes. The perfumer describes a sand accord and you can detect that bit of salty earthiness in there. Ambrette gives the effect of sweaty skin, not unpleasant, but just like you’ve been outside for a bit. As the weather warms, this is going to be my new signature scent.

I wasn't very interested in this one, and then I sampled it. Its very nice honestly. The citrus isn't sharp, no cleaning agents in sight. It's perfectly tempered with what I can only describe as something bright but soft. Slightly sweet, bright sunshine, and a clean breeze. I was kinda impressed until the longevity let me down. Its definitely a skin scent as well but if you did ten sprays or so you could get moderate sillage. Just a bummer it disappeared on my skin. I'm gonna try again on clothes and different areas of my body to see if I can get at least several hours out of it. The price is good enough that I may get a full size if I can eke out a bit more on the performance aspect. Its definitely not something I would normally go for, but I'm happy I gave it a try.

Boy Smells Solar Drip is bright, clean, and sunny. A nice daytime summer scent. The opening has a bright pomelo mostly, with tart but smooth lemony mango accents supporting. The ambroxan and linen adds a clean laundry musk which is all I smell in the dry-down with large traces of the opening fruits. There's nothing sharp or scratchy about the texture of this scent, which is sometimes the case for citruses and musks. Instead it smells like rounded and bright sun-rays. Solar Drip becomes intimate fairly quickly on my skin but it's such a happy scent that I don't mind.

A nice, feminine, and wearable sunscreeny lemonade ice cream citrus. Something strange happens in the drydown with my skin chemistry and gives an almost funky note but over spraying seems to remedy this. Just be aware that doing so will leave an oily residue on the skin, which I don't really mind especially in the cold dead of winter where dark colors, clothing layers, and dry skin prevail

I mean it's ok. On me it's a very very mellow sunscreen smell. It's not like it's a bad fragrance or anything, but if I want to smell like sunscreen in the summer I'll just put sunscreen on. I'm a little disappointed it isn't so loud with the citruses like Citrush was (although with that it's in the name so it better have loud citruses). Again, smells good, it's just a bit hard to smell.

I mean it’s ok nothing special, you can literally find a thousand perfumes that smell like this but for much cheaper. It’s a clean citrusy fresh/green scent, I didn’t get any mango. I wore it on my run and it was very nice and fresh, I just think for the price it should be more interesting or last/project much longer.

Wet hair full of shampoo. Very very very generic. I don't see why would anyone pay more than $20 on this as you can buy a bunch of BBW body mists that smells the same.

I love the initial scent, which is sparkly sweet, but after a while, the citrus becomes a bit overwhelming like cleaner 😞🍋🛁🧽🫷

Citrusy and musky, sitting very close to the skin with minimal projection. It just doesn't really thrill me though.

Shampoo, it’s the green apple kind of cheap shampoo but at least people will think you’re clean 😐

Wasn't my favorite. It reminded me of citrus all-purpose spray, but the kind that smells like straight chemicals.

I admit it- I was prepared to be a hater. As an admitted summer-scent snob (coconut and sunscreen and pineapple and Pina coladas? GTFO), my expectations were through the floor... But one spray of this had the biggest smile on my face- I can't explain it, it's just enchanting! It's happy in the most straightforward, unencumbered, unpretentious way. The texture is smooth and bright, it doesn't have the oiliness or piercing-in-the-back-of-my-nose, sickly-sweet cloyingness of so many fragrances that are meant to evoke hot weather and vacations. The mango-citrus combo is like a sorbet, or an ice-lolly, slurped of greedily on a childhood beach holiday, when you're running to escape your parents to avoid having to re-up on sun-screen. It feels like sparkly water droplets on warm skin, shrieking giggles, sticky fingers delving deep into grounding sand, blissful tiredness after a day by the ocean, but also the promise of a night of very adult fun later on. Sillage, projection and longevity are all weirdly impressive for something that's so top-note heavy, and the fragrances develops beautifully from juicy ice-lolly fruitiness into something more softly, warmly salty-skin-scent-adjacent hours later. Idk if I'm happy enough for this scent, but omg I really really hope to be one day!

i genuinely wanted to like this so bad especially for the linen note, i love a fabric/linen/wool note but 😭 this smells like a dirty dishrag. imagine you just wiped the table after eating. now youre using the same rag to wipe down excess dish water. your dish soap is scented kitchen citrus except its poured into what used to be a bottle of liquid vanilla scented hand soap from bath and body works and you didnt use it all up before repurposing, and that rag is croaking to be put in a washing machine after absorbing so the mystery concoction. i am so sad like this literally smells like carpet covered with lemon scented disinfectant spray to mask the scent of dog breath in an attempt to receive security deposit from a pet free apartment . i wish it worked on my skin so bad i am so jealous of the rest of u😭

I have very high expectations with this one. I've always loved the smell of my beach blanket after I return back from the holidays. That scent on the blanket is not easy to describe... It is a mix of salty notes from the sea water, the sand, there is also the smell of the skin and there's something else... the sun? I don't know. It is not an unpleasant smell of sweat or dirt of any sort, it smells like vacation in the most relaxed, sexy and positive way. So if this perfume captured my memory, it would be incredible. I hope so, as pomelo can smell like sweaty skin.

It’s a super joyful citrus. I have only tried in cold weather I don’t get sunscreen scent as all. This is really delightful the mango is almost mouthwatering but not sickly sweet. I wish it lasted longer and projected more. It turns skin scent in less than an hour. I don’t like a huge scent cloud I just want to be able to smell it! I think the cold makes it a little soapy. Curious if that is something that happens in the warmer weather. Smells amazing but not going to buy a full bottle because of the lack of longevity and projection.

I received the *BOY SMELLS* promo email yesterday. I read the hype. I like the notes. I'm happy there's no coconut and no pineapple; (Yippee!) I find the Linen + Sand + Solar notes intriguing. I ordered it. Stay tuned.
