Suede Pony

This one was a love from first sniff. I was browsing perfumes at the store - when I spritzed Suede Pony onto the paper strip the scent just stopped me cold in my tracks. The fruity top notes pack the sweetest punch straight out of the bottle, with an undercurrent of a wild animal. When I put it on however the pineapple and plum punch dissipated giving way to smoke. Like other reviewers said, the perfume feels very smoky but I would not say it's a musty cigarette smell. It's hookah lounge tobacco laced with luscious ripe plum, diabolically bittersweet. After the first 20 minutes the smoke settles down and two new notes emerge, the leather and a very fresh and green note, probably the violet. And so the perfume goes on for hours, interlacing smoke with plum and violet and leather. On the drydown faint resonances of violet and smoke keep coming back. I have a feeling that this is a polarizing scent, the exact same notes making it delicious or repulsive.

i’ve had suede pony for five years now and i still love it. to me, it’s very pineapple forward, with suede of course being very prominent as well. i’m surprised at how differently people experience this fragrance in the reviews. not many people mention the pineapple! i think it plays really well with the wood and leather notes. i feel like a mysterious romantic cowboy when i wear it lol. i get lots of compliments when i wear it, and people generally seem to think it smells nice. it does have floral and herby notes too. to me, the versatility and depth of this scent make it suitable for every occasion. it’s bold but not heavy imo. day, night, summer, winter, spring, autumn - depending on the atmosphere and vibe im going for, i feel like different elements of suede pony reveal themselves. truly an interesting and lovely scent that i think could easily be someone’s everyday fragrance if they are a creative and bold person!

I just got this one - lured by the Violet mostly, but I’m always down for something fresh and woodsy. Suede Pony is really interesting in that is smells really different depending on the surface it’s sprayed on. I sprayed on tester paper and it became so musky and old-ladyish that I was scared I wouldn’t actually like it. When I first sprayed it on my skin and my shirt, the suede and leather were overwhelming. However, in a very short amount of time the leather faded and a beautiful fresh woodiness and floral comes through and is the profile that lasts. I can’t stop smelling my sweatshirt from last night. I absolutely love this. The initial leather seems to be what is the more masculine side of the unisex element, but I find the dry-down very fresh and sweet.

I spray this when I am feeling confident and a bit moody. It’s a straight soft suede, rather than leather, with a woody smokiness that breaks through when it settles down. There’s something green in the background which, when I overspray, verges on too much for me. I don’t smell a lot of the plum, pineapple or saffron notes indicated above. Its lasting power is impressive. You’ll catch whiffs of it for hours after spraying. I have Violet Ends also, which is a smoky, leathery violet and a bit ashier than this. I love it slightly more than Suede Pony, but that’s my love for violet. It’s pretty masculine but...what’s gender these days anyway? Challenging our gender ideas is exactly what Boy Smells is about and they’ve succeeded here.

You have to really like leather wood and violets to appreciate this! I had a sample and at first I was like “no not for me” then once the dry down happened I fell in LOVE! It softens and the violet comes forward on me. I truly love this and I am feel that I can wear this throughout summer and way into fall. The lasting power is phenomenal and sillage is also great. Honestly this is a unisex fragrance and leans on the masculine side but I am still in love with it being a female. Highly recommended but please know that you have to love leather! 9/10 Ok, I took a shower and I can still smell it on me....beast mode!!!

On me, Suede Pony smells of cigarettes and cucumbers... I'm not particularly fond of either of those scents, but in the strangest way, they come together so intoxicatingly in this fragrance. It smells dirty in a sort of hot, animalistic way, while just barely maintaining a freshness that prevents it from becoming stuffy or gross. The perfect indie sleaze revival scent, if you will!! I imagine Effy Stonem wearing this while staring people down on the bus back from the bar. This is the bottle I grab when I'm feelin like feelin messy.

First blast of musky sweet, almost oversweet saffron and a citrusy purple fruity leather. Very nice! It feels bright and yet cozy and suede-y at the same time. Pineapple and leather... genius! After a bit, that strange woody leathery labdanum note starts to creep through and take over. Great journey! I'd rather get this over Le Labo Labdanum 18 methinks, this one isn't so intense on the animalics. Unisex and best for cool weather.

Absolutely love this. Makes sense since I love Fahrenheit, La Botte, TF Ombre Leather — basically most leather scents, period. What sets this apart is that blast of smoke noted by many other reviewers. Leather and smoke are among my favorite notes — it was meant to be. FWIW, I didn’t get ANY of the fruit listed in the notes.

like the leather jacket of someone who smokes methols left in an dusty car with a sweet-scented air freshener in it, but in a good way? or maybe a y2k hot girl in an antique store furniture section. unusual, alluring mix of boyish leather with fruity powdery high-femme top notes.

I'm a little shocked at how much I like this. I left it for last in my Boy Smells discovery set because I don't usually think of myself as liking anything-leather adjacent, but I think I'm going to have revisit that opinion. This is fantastic, very fruity and fun and not at all what I expected from the name. The suede and plum notes blend together in a way I can only describe as playful. When I was a kid my father was the maintainer for a group of high end outlet stores. I almost never went into the actual shops, except for when my grandfather would visit (my mother's side of the family wasn't exactly wealthy, but they were compared to my parents). He loved dragging us all around the stores, flirting with the saleswomen and buying gifts for my mom's stepmom. Suede Pony reminds me of one particular leather shop, whose name eludes me even though I can still remember the location. One year he bought my mother a black leather duster that she proceeded to wear throughout the rest of my childhood. Around the turn of the millennium I dubbed it her "Matrix jacket." I'm pretty sure that coat smelled a lot like this, especially after it rained. Anyway, this is enjoyable even without the nostalgia. It's a leather scent that still manages to be bright and fun. I know I can't justify buying a full bottle, but I can't entirely rule it out either.

My Little Suede Pony opens as a fruity and slightly flamboyant soft leather. The combination of the fruits and spices is almost medicinal in a really good way. Think berry-flavored cough syrup but better. The saffron is not screechy nor too spicy but just enough to lend the suede some texture and support the berry smell. The mid really is where the suede becomes more prominent with a woody nutty texture and smell. The fruitiness does turn quite sweet at some point here but it eventually tones down and connects with the labdanum in the drydown. In the drydown, you’re pretty much left with labdanum just enough to keep one entertained. Really quite enjoying this one! I’d say this one’s unisex leaning feminine. This and Violet Ends are the best from the line. The uptick in fruity sweetness somewhere is disappointing, yes, but I think it’s worth the money for what you’re getting overall. It’s actually quite beautiful when you get whiffs of this in the air. I just might get myself a bottle! UPDATE: Just received my bottle and the cap is much, much bigger than the pictures show. The cap looked so intentional like they were so desperate to tell us that they didn’t copy Byredo (note the shape, the label, cap color and material, oh and also perfumer). 😅

The suede on the base is the star of the show for sure, but this fragrance is not at all a one-trick pony. it sparks juicy and sweet, the pineapple brings a very interesting tropical tone to what would otherwise be a very woody, leathery and classically masculine scent. the dry-down becomes more juicy and floral as the plum and violet develop, but the suede remains the star of the show throughout, becoming slightly muskier as it evolves. sexual and raw, but playful, with a delicate side. the perfume wears very nicely, it lasts all day and it evolves as the day goes on, transforming into many iterations of the same animalistic core. another hit from Boy Smells.

In the bottle, very suede and coconut water forward--for some reason it almost made me think of how Noxema smells! On a dry down the suede is still front and center but softened by the sweetness of the plum and pineapple. As time goes on there's a smokiness that comes through. Like sitting in the middle of a dark hookah lounge wearing your date's old leather jacket. Or smoking a cigarette in a leather seated car with a brand new air freshener lol. Really interesting, I'm surprised at how much I enjoy this fragrance but it's really hitting the spot between smoky and fruity scents that I like.

Very girly-girl 2000s fruity tropical opening, then mellows into a sort of menthol-y ashtray patchouli scent. But an upscale one, doesn't feel really feel like a raunchy hippie patchouli. The opening lasts less than a minute, and the rest is pretty linear. Very much a rich New York hipster smell, in that it smells a lot like stale menthol cigarettes but in a very bougie and well-blended way. Not for me but it's a really nice smelling 'trust fund hippie' androgynous tomboy scent.

This one opened really smoky on me---thanks to the labdanum and saffron, I believe. I was not enjoying it much, to be honest...but around the 30 minute mark it started to sweeten and get smoother and now I am really enjoying it. It does resemble the drydown of Fahrenheit quite a bit, minus the heavy gasoline note that one has--this has just a hint of it. Sweetly fruity, a little suedey, woody, a bit of green in the opening....I think this is definitely a keeper.

This has a nuttiness in the opening that reminds me of Creed Love in Black— but more smokey and less floral-ly. It’s faintly leathery, despite the name. I did not like this upon my first application but I’ve appreciated it more on subsequent tries. It’s rather complex, evolving from plummy into a pleasing woody scent. It is rather long lasting and pretty good on the projection IMO. I’m not sure if this is as my style as Love in Black so will continue testing.

This opens up INSANELY fruity but once I put it on my skin the pineapple/plum notes quickly dissipate to a very musky,woody,nutty/leathery/smoky smell with that punchy fruity note(reminiscent of skittles) lingering nicely in the back. This also does have a subtle spicy quality to it from the saffron and cardamom. I really like this one but I can’t say it really works for me personally, but a great fragrance!!

It has a really nice fruity opening, and over time develops into an excellent woody/dusty/leather with brushes of violet. It's a good winter/fall scent if you want something woody but still fresh.

I like this i think???? unsure, check back later. I love it upon first spray, it blends harmoniously but then it dries down and the pineapple and plum dissipates and i get sad :( Yes i know they’re only top notes but what Im left with is a kind of stale leathery grave with a ghost of violet crawling out of the moldy earth. Kind of smells like the later part but of that film Midnight Cowboy, you know the part when the party has ended and that guy has like advanced tuberculosis and can’t make it up the stairs Honestly the dry down smells like someone infused cardboard with dry-rot leather and I don’t know how to feel about - I’m not repulsed so I shall keep wearing it to make up my mind. Listen before you crawl up my ass I am always so down for a heavy stale smoky leather, wood, and pepper fragrance but I am just not sure about this one. Beware, this is not a safe blind buy I am so glad I bought the travel size

Suede Pony is suede from top to bottom. While others seem to get greenness to this scent, I find the suede so overpowering that it drowns out most everything else. Even the wood base note is hidden until the drydown. That being said, it's an authentic suede – more real than most other animalian scents I can recall. It reminds me of fragrances from Zoologist, which I consider to be a compliment at this much more accessible price point. This is not my favorite Boy Smells entry – Tantrum, Flor de la Virgen, and Violet Ends are all more interesting and complex – but if you're looking for a solo suede fragrance with great longevity, try this.

Suede Pony packs a brief fruity punch upon first spray but quickly settled to a straight suede smell. While the woody notes are there, the suede/leather dominates to the point where I found it to be a little bit boring. There’s something nostalgic about it but I can’t quite put my finger on what and for that reason I like to periodically test it but it hasn’t been one from Boy Smells that I’ve liked enough to wear out. Masculine leaning and could be fun for a night out - would be cute paired with a grungy southern gothic look

This is the fruitiest suede or leather scent I've ever smelled. It's such a experience in contradictions that works oddly well. Horseback riding on a tropical beach. Sweet fruit and dusty leather. Much of the fruit fades and leaves behind a standard leather/suede note. Reminds me of one of the Mac shadescents. Seems to be controversial on different skin, so try before you buy. This one triggered my eczema.

I am disappointed with this one. It is heavy and garish to my nose. I usually am a fan of Jerome Epinette. This one...not so much. I should probably try it again later on in the month and see it I still dislike it. Hormones can really affect my perception of scent. Hormones are a helluva drug.

This smelled gorgeous on the blotter strip but then moment it hit my skin it smelled like hay and I wanted to scrub it off. I am totally at a loss. Assuming this one is unusually dependent on one’s own chemistry, wondering if anyone else had this experience??

Really strong. Smells like snuggling up with a cowboy near a campfire, and he just finished treating his leather fringe jacket with a conditioning oil.

Smells like dusty stuffed animals locked in an attic

I initially sprayed this on a pillow and was obsessed with the suede + coconut combo, two scents that I actually love. Smelled so fresh, I couldn't stop sniffing, so the next day I did a skin test. My wife immediately asked me what I was wearing and said it was disgusting. I was on the fence about it on the skin, but couldn't fathom to understand why she so strongly rejected it. I gave it a few days and did another skin test and I exited my bathroom but u-turned to grab something and there I found it, hiding in the murks of the sillage: the old grandma smell. And now that I've smelled it I can't get it out of my nostrils. It smells like the wet musty moldy water that you get splashed with at a theme park, wearing your grandma's perfume while eating a coconut lollipop. Can only now describe as fetid.

It smells like cigarettes. Oddly, I don’t hate it, but it’s not very pleasant. I got one small burst of pineapple in the beginning and then it was just straight SMOKE. Pass.

A menthol cigarette butt. That's it.

Extremely strong and unpleasant. It just smells like leather/hay/dirty animal, I can’t distinguish any of the other things that are supposedly in it. Became ok after I scrubbed at it with soap in the sink -- maybe usable if you put on a really tiny amount, but even one spray of it is unpleasantly strong.

This fragrance is like visiting the home of an 80 year old chain smoker who never opens the windows and tries the mask the smell with potpourri. Unfortunately it is also long lasting. Try before you buy or just go for Tantrum or Flor de la Virgen.

Had to unfortunately return it. On me it smelled like a woman who just returned home from an all night bender, smelling like a chain smoker. All I got was cigarettes and regret from this

Smells like literal burning rubber My friend received this as a gift, hated it, then gave it to me. Now i have to find someone to pawn it off on.

It smells exactly like cigarettes to me. That goes away a little once it dries down, but I can't get over that acrid smokiness at the beginning

Suede Pony by Boy Smells I was so excited to try this as a lover of cardamon, violets and saffron. I was sorely disappointed after trying a sample. The scent is very strong, with the black pepper note standing front and centre. The pepper is so strong, it gives off a burnt rubber scent. The burnt rubber smell keeps front and centre for maybe 4 hours, before drying down enough to smell the other notes. When that happens it is quite pleasant, very fresh and woodsy with strong leather at the base. Would be amazing if not for the burnt rubber! Definitely not a blind buy

On me it pulls all suede, plum and violet and yes a touch of cigaretts but in the most alluring, magnetic and captivating way. Its not something I would want to wear everyday as it is a heavier fragrance, but, I'm so glad I have this for times i want to stand out and smell unique. Such a shame this is discontunued because although I dont think this os for everyone I think so many people would loooove this.

Verrrry powerful leathery open on me. Maybe it's power of suggestion, but it did smell like new suede rather than smooth, broken in leather. Then there was something like a geranium leaf - not quite floral, but very zingy and green. Intense lasting power! My boyfriend said it sat in his mustache for like 30 min after sniffing my wrist.

I love this fragrance. It’s not just straight leather which I felt violet ends and cowboy kush both are. The leather notes are there but softened with floral notes and the sweetness of the fruit. It’s one that I will probably only wear when going out, not really for daytime most likely (though maybe) and definitely never for work.

All I could smell on this one was pineapple. After it dries down, I began to smell the peppercorn, but I feel this was completely overtaken by fruit. It has undertones of something I can’t really describe...sort of like when you get into someone’s bed and you can tell they let their dog sleep with them. I won’t elaborate further.

A lot of suede, a lot of violet, and a little bit of cucumber. Good thing I like all those, because one spray lasts all day. This stuff is STRONG.

Smells very close to the taste of those fruity cocktails I used to buy for ladies when I was in college they called them p*rnstar drinks/shots.
