Ambre Noir

I think Brecourt could do with a bit more publicity. I own two of their perfumes , and my boyfriend has bought Contre-Pouvoir. The presentation is excellent. Each perfume comes with 4 extra items : a small spray with the cologne version of the perfume, another one with the « absolu » version of the perfume, and two rollers with two chosen « accords » as they say, which you can use to customize your experience. For the price I find it generous. That being said, what counts the most is what’s inside the bottle. I had a sample of Ambre Noir. After trying it several times since May, I found it marvelous each time. And with fall approaching, I finally bought the full bottle this week. It’s a well balanced amber, not too strong, not very oriental. I cannot say why I like it so much and why, for instance, Ambre Sultan never appealed to me so much. Is it because of the myrrh? I also think it’s unisex and not feminine leaning. That, plus an extremely good longevity, will make it a good companion for fall and winter. I highly recommend everyone to discover this brand!

Ambre Noir first reminded me of Thierry Mugler's Angel, but it's not at all as overwhelming. After testing them a while I think Brecourt's Haram is much more similar to Angel than Ambre Noir. At first Ambre Noir is very gourmand, with notes of saffron in it, but it's not at all cloying, it is sweet and warm but at the same time very refreshing. After a while, there are definite tones of pepper, but the sillage is soft, warm and still at the same time fresh. Hard to describe! I imagine it's the sandalwood, patchouly and balms, and I do like it. The drydown is gorgeous, a soft gourmand with a bit of powder, and it all ends in a beautiful vanilla... yum! I'm often told I smell nice when I wear it :-) After using Ambre Noir for a few months it has become one of my very favourite perfumes, and to my surprise it works well in summer as well as during the chilly seasons.

It seems I'm the only one who feels this way, but this immediately reminded me of Christian Dior Ambre Nuit. I'm comparing them side by side now, and the amber in each - which dominates in both - is very similar. Ambre Nuit is a bit more resinous and has that lovely rose in the background, while Ambre Noir is a little smoother and sweeter with the vanilla. I think I prefer the Dior for me as it's a tad more masculine, but I really enjoy both. The vanillic amber in this also made me think of Omnia Ambra - if you like this but want something less smoky with more prominent vanilla, try that.

This isn't a typical amber scent. At first spray I already had a deja-vù. I find this a darker version of Shalimar Parfum initial (which I love) myrrh tinted flower (but just a minimal hint of flower), dark smoked woods, without the sweetness and way less vanilla. I would have wished for more magnolia, maybe in autumn will be more obvious. I swear I can smell opoponax, maybe due to an intense musk note. It is a lovely unisex cold season fragrance that goes each time. Edit September 2020: labdanum and magnolia are coming so beautifully through in colder weather, exactly as I hoped for.

Exceptionnel !!! Un coup de coeur olfactif, ce parfum est une pépite , très sous coté ! Il n'est pas du tout 'féminin' totalement mixte L'ambre est l'un des plus beau que j'ai sentit jusqu' ici L'odeur est envoûtante et addictive ! Le parfum porte tellement bien son nom , on a à faire à quelque chose de sombre , de précieux , de rare ! La projection et le sillage ainsi que la tenue de ce parfum sont exceptionnels et c'est rare quand je dis cela !!! Banger totale 💫

Although I am always fan of perfumes, I'm not so good to detect individual notes ... But to my nose Ambre Noir seems really different than Dior Addict, wich is for me much darker than Ambre noir. And indeed, AN on my skin is far from noir: When I wear it I have a feeling of angelic lightness and spirituality. A scent that attracts compliments, without being heavy. For me, the best fragrance of Brecourt and the best amber fragrance ever tried!

Beautiful. I've been seeking something to replace my Laura Mercier Ambre Passion. This is it. Beautiful, vanilla heavy, resinous amber. And affordable too. Sold.

Ambre Noir is a gorgeous amber perfume. I ordered Haram after choosing between it and Eau Trouble but received this instead. Thankfully I also enjoy this very much. Somehow the effect of spraying the fragrance seems to enhance it more than dabbing it on from a tester vial. I found Dior Addict slightly suffocating to wear although I think it's wonderful. Smells wonderful on the friend I sold it to. In DA the vanilla is thick and lush but in AN the vanilla is quite different and the amber is at the front once the fresh top-notes subside. Also, Brecourt are truly generous, gifting extra samples and a little purse spray, but just a little disorganised, bless 'em. I can't even get cross they're so kind. Still would love my Haram though (shakes head smiling)... Edit 2013: Not so amused anymore - see my post about Brecourt.

If I had to compare Ambre Noir to something, I would say that initially it reminds me of Dior Addict. Maybe because of the strong, sweet and think vanilla base that is a prominent part of the composition? But Ambre Noir is more than just vanilla. Although unfortunately I can not smell any bergamot 9which would be nice to balance the sweetness), the myrrh and labdanum are definitely there and they are what sets Addict and Ambre Noir apart. On my skin Ambre noir does not change much as long as it lasts. It is quite strong, dark, rich and smooth. Smells delicious! I would say it is more of an oriental gourmand that jut oriental. The sweet base is quite interesting and not overpowering, but I wonder whether it will not be too heavy for the upcoming warm months.

In my opinion as a perfume house you should make your Ambre either cheap or special. Brecourt's Ambre Noir is neither. It's a pleasant, but extremely common powdery amber, so it doesn't justify it's price tag.

Pleasant, sensual, sweet but completely different from all the other amber scents... his peculiarity is that you will hardly find another harmonious arrangement like this. A charm.

It smells good but i do not see the added value for an amber. I would prefer the original Ambre Sultan.

This is a weird kind of amber, haven't tried anything like this. amber in "Ambre Noir" is not as sweet and rich as most people are used to in amber fragrances. "Ambre Noir" on my skin opened with loads of magnolia and green notes of orris and myrrh. Of course there is also amber, but it stays in background therefore making this weird mix of warm and gourmand amber background and herbal, dry and almost bitter "front line". I believe that from orris root it also has a bit of "old lipstick" quality which for me borderlines with some kind of wood polish smell. This would make a really dangerous blind buy if you expect a warm and ordinary amber fragrance. Do try first. This might cause some "love-hate" relations.

I have a spray sample. Initial spray it smelled nice, simple, sweet effervescent light amber with sandalwood and vanilla prominent. After a few minutes though, I smell an off culinary note, as if someone was cooking a meat dish and the smell permeated their clothing and they sprayed this on. It was an immediate scrubber for me.

Firstly, I'd like to comment on the excellent customer service from Brecourt. They offer free samples through their website and only charge the cost of postage. Best of all, they post worldwide and i received my samples to Australia in less than 10 days. Amazing! Now for the review: I would agree with Migokta on the comparison with Dior Addict. I guess this is the sort of fragrance that feels comfortable, familiar somehow. Yet this is not a criticism. Indeed, Ambre Noir is compelling with it's heavy vanilla accent upon the amber but does not become over bearing or cloying. I have been searching for a good oriental vanilla for some time. Who'd have thought this could fit the bill?

I'm also on the bandwagon here with the Dior Addict reference, this is very similar. It opens with a huge blast of amber and myrhh. When I smelled it up close it smelled like lipstick. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it at all. It ws slightly bizzare. But as it's unfolded... the notes are mingling and this is very much like Addict as previously mentioned. It's slightly more incensey, smoky & dry though. VERY NICE!! As it dries the vanilla comes through alot stronger but it still retains is smokiness. Again..as my other Brecourt reviews have said, this is done with a finesse and elegance that is beautiful. I'm a fan!!

I think ichigogirl has pretty much summed it up. I have my sample and I'm loving it. I would call this more of an Oriental Vanilla... The flowers are barely there, the vanilla carries throughout. Sweet, but not overly so. somehow this is fresh and vanilla... the sandalwood is subtle which is fine by me. I think I could get used to wearing this! I love labdanum and I do detect it, though it continues to run away from my nose while I try to chase it down...here? no... there? maybe...oh! where'd it go? there it is! This is a clean scent. No "chemicals", or fakery here. I like it.

If you've dreamt of finding an amber/resin fragrance with sustained notes of magnolia and orris root, you may have found your match here in Brecourt's Ambre Noir. The vanilla is a subdued presence here, but mostly to my nose, it's amber/ORRIS/amber/MAGNOLIA/amber/amber/vanilla. This is less sweet than Ambre Sultan, which is my favorite amber. If you're looking for a gorgeous incense/resin accord and you like nag champa, I'd recommend you steer to Brecourt's Haram(has been renamed Farah), if you can find it.

That faded down some and I had cumin with perfume-y vanilla sandalwood, not a fav for me. It wasn't bad, but was very much not my style. It reached a gentle, woody musk stage that was very nice, but the cumin never left and eventually I had to scrub as something about the blend grated on my nerves. It's not a bad scent by any means, but I can't do it. More left for other people!

یه کهربایی معرکه.بوش دقیقا خود کهرباست.بدون کوچیکترین کمبودی.این کار نوشته زنونه.ولی کاملا یونیه به نظرم.و حتی شاید بیشتر تمایل به مردانگی داره. دوستانی که دنبال کارای کهربایی هستن حتما اینو تست کنن.برای من علاوه بر رایحه با کیفیتش نوستالژی هم داشت. توی نت ثانویه خیلی به دی اند جی د وان شبیه میشه .البته نه حالت تنباکویی اون.

Unfortunately, the bergamot is overwhelming on my skin, giving Ambre Noir a bitter effect....what a pity! I'll finish the bottle but that's it!

It's not listed, but I get a distinctive cumin note. Unfortunately it's just too much for me.

Yeah.. it has that discusgitng indoloc cumin...
