The Queen of Spades Modern

This ‘modern’ version plays with the original perfume’s white floral heart and citrus combination but - much like the juice’s colour, which is a deep navy blue - it’s darker, infused with the earthen elements of patchouli. Created by Florent Jubert the modern twist in this iteration of The Queens Of Spades composition is mango, which when, combined with the vanilla and the marshmallow accord in the base lends a very edible, gourmand edge to the perfume.

Really sweet. Serious mango happening here. A very strong fruitchouli. I get an incense note but this could be the patchouli. The quality is very very good. Sillage is huge and projection is loud. Reminiscent of Gucci Guilty and Lady Gaga fragrances but not at all a clone of those because there’s mango instead of peach. This is a bit too sweet for me but if you are a lover of sweet sweet perfumes you would want this in your collection. The bottle is really cool, it sits upside down on a triangle base.

I never smelled Lady Gaga but the note breakdown is quite different.. wondering if the similarity is mainly down to the black liquid.. Very dark coloured scents scare me.. worried about staining. I got this in a swap n have sprayed this carefully on just my skin. It does remind me of something or other but I don't know what.. It's certainly not the beast described below. (Not sure why you wouldn't expect 'modern' when it helpfully has the that written on the box ;) ) It is not overwhelmingly sweet to me, it's more just rough n ready fruity floral. I can imagine that overspraying this would tip it into headache territory though, bear in mind I've been careful. It has a kind of threatened aggression about it.. which I guess suits the name. It's not a friendly fruity floral somehow. That may just be me n orange blossom, which tends to bite me a bit. Wasn't expecting the 1970s style drawing on the box.. it looks like the cover of a Mills & Boon of the period. The woman in the drawing has an expression of pouty anger, which really does suit this thing & goes with the name, Queen of Spades, which parallels tarot's queen of swords in personality/divination. The opening blast is a bit like when you knock on someone's door n they aren't expecting you or they are expecting a fight, 'whadayou want?!' but then they look look you up n down n realise you are not wanting a fight so they are like 'oh it's you ok' n grudgingly let you in. You are never made comfortable with tea or cake but they remain civil n conciliatory. Not getting a slap feels like an achievement. I'm tempted to store this 'upside down' given that it's already packaged 'upside down' like House of Oud. Sprayer down feels so uncomfortable, an accident waiting to happen. If the dry down is appreciably different I will come back to this.

This is incredibly sweet and extremely strong. You can smell it on your clothes weeks (!!!) after application, but be careful, the liquid is black and will stain everything. I don't like it. It was a blind buy from Russia and I expected a grown-up, deep, mysterious perfume, not a modern fruity floral with mango and syrup.
