McGregor

Praising the modest and reliable drugstore cologne is so transgressive when amongst the fragrance enthusiast's milieu of navel-gazing connoisseurs who kneel to luxury exclusive lines from designers like Celine or fetishize small-batch artisanal brands. McGregor isn't even mind-blowing, but it's just so damn good. It is soapy, musky, vaguely leathery, and a refreshing palate cleanser from haute parfumerie. It's cut from a similar cloth as other woody, spicy chypres of the period, but while several others have been captured by dubious hype and therefore jacked-up in price, McGregor remains relatively affordable. There's a delightful lime and lavender opening, it is herbaceous and spicy in the heart, and has that mellow masculine woody base that has this melancholic feel of nostalgia.

Fabergé McGregor... ...is unfortunately discontinued. I haven't even heard of it but i had to have it because i do have a sweet spot for classic drug store colognes. It is such a well blended cozy and warm cologne like f.ex Chaz and Mandate. The citric and herbal notes are not even noticeable when applied but that could be because the bottle is older and citrus notes have a habit of vanishing over the years. The anise creates a sweetness together with the coconut milk....a sweet richness...well rounded and not over the top sitting on a herbal woody base created by the patchouli and vetiver. It is similar but not identical to Sung homme without doubt. It also lasts reasonably well for a cologne.

This fragrance is wonderful! Just scored a 2.5 ounce bottle for only $15. It's a rich, woody-spicy scent that's straight out of the 80s. Reminds me of Brownstone and V.S.O.P. by Paul Sebastian, both of which I love but are hard to find and expensive. McGregor is a spot-on, lower priced, high performing substitute.

Anyone who misses McGregor should try Sung Homme. I have compared them on opposite hands several times and the progressions are virtually identical, although Sung Homme lasts a bit longer. Camp Beverly Hills for Men is also very similar, but also discontinued.

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 098 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased July 2019 - NOS I received the version made by Parfums Fabergé, it says it was made in USA. It's not a spray but a splash, though I'm not sure if it comes as a spray also (which I'd greatly prefer). My bottle of McGregor is an EDC, not an aftershave. This is a very good scent. I really like it. It reminds me of something old-school as well, maybe one or two notes of Polo (green). I'm not 100% sure. As I wear it and wear other stuff I'll figure it out. The lime smells a bit like bergamot initially but this is all about the dry down. At times I sense some spice too. McGregor is a must have for old fragrance keepers. 2024 Update: Haven't ended up wearing it much because it's a splasher, and it's generous on the vetiver which makes it instantly cloy if applied wrong. Smells great, but at the right times. The model I have is marked Parfums Fabergé on the bottom.

I too was curious about this one, and the prices are so low it's almost a crime! Now if the notes didn't look interesting to me I would not have gone ahead with the blind buy. It's not a fougere (with a non-disclosed lavender note) so I was pleased about that, but even better is that the notes list seems fairly accurate. And though it does suggest some sort of rugged landscape, it's quite smooth. There's a touch of sweetness and the texture is like fine sandpaper. It's on the simple side, which reminds me of some recent niche scents, but this is entirely natural smelling. I can't say I've smelled anything all that similar to it, either, and so there is a uniqueness factor that might be appealing to some people. Overall, an incredible bargain, unless you want a party fragrance, which this is not. If this was a vintage Creed scent, I'd say it was one of my favorite Creeds (behind Vintage Tabarome).
