Moonlight in Heaven

For years I've wanted to try this fragrance but either no one had it in stock, airports didn't carry testers or I couldn't get a decant of it anywhere. I have finally managed to get my nose on this and it's a love at first sniff. A lot of the reviews talk about how this is a mango, coconut, rice fragrance unlike any other mango fragrance and they're all wrong. This is not a gourmand fragrance at all and the name of it is extremely apt. Moonlight in Heaven is a beautiful floral fragrance that captures the smells of numerous night blooming tropical flowers. It's probably why the official Kilian website doesn't list the mango note in its breakdown. The reason I think people smell mango is because 1) they listen to what the note breakdown here says and they convince themselves they can smell it or they parrot what they've heard from others and 2) most people have probably never smelled a Plumeria/Frangipani flower in full bloom at night time since outside the tropics it's an uncommon plant and you can't buy it at florists either. The mango/coconut/peach notes here are the Plumeria or Frangipani flower in fragrance form because that's exactly what the flower smells like at night time it also makes sense why a fragrance that smells like Plumeria and night blooming Jasmine is called 'Moonlight in Heaven.' Frangipani flower is one of those things that does not smell anything like itself when turned into an absolute or elixir. Many people over the years have tried to capture the smell of the flower by using the flowers and the oil never smells like how they flower does unlike with jasmine or rose. So the only way to create the smell is to use synthetic notes to create it. This is a beautiful floral fragrance (floral means it will lean more feminine but if you're not an insecure man you can pull this off really well) which opens with lemon/bergamot (don't get the grapefruit) and then you're blasted instantly by the frangipani (which is why I'm guessing peach is the opening notes here), you also get a green note similar to the smell of the stems of tropical green plants but it's very mild and not overpowering so it makes it feel like you're in a botanical garden. The smell of the frangipani flower lasts the entirety of the fragrance's life and night blooming jasmine comes in around 40 minutes after the opening. The dry down is like a creamy, smooth version of coconut water (but not the sweet thai coconuts more like brazil coconuts that are a little bit salty/sour) but maybe this is just the frangipani smell getting weaker, combining with the vanilla and the green notes to make it seem as if I'm smelling fresh coconut water or coconut milk. Musk then rounds out the fragrance as that's the only smell left 14 hours after spraying. An absolute 10/10 fragrance from Kilian and one of the most realistic takes on Plumeria/Frangipani which is rare to find in perfumery. If you're after a more mango heavy fragrance look into Xerjoff Cruz Del Sur II, Thomas Kosmala No. 4 Neon, Mind Games Blockade and Vilhelm Mango Skin. God of Fire is more candied ginger, lemon, vanilla/cotton candy and a smoky drydown more than it is mango. If you lived in the tropics and miss the smell of a garden in full bloom at night time this is the one to get! The only thing that comes close is Sospiro Moonlight Sonata (Which has been discontinued).

Moonlight in Heaven surprised me. Unlike many perfumes that tell their entire story within the first hour before settling into a predictable dry-down, this fragrance genuinely evolves. It feels less like a perfume and more like spending a full day at a luxury tropical resort. The opening is sharp, spicy and bright. On my skin, pink pepper and the aromatic facets came forward strongly, creating a punchy, almost vintage-feeling introduction that I initially struggled with. If I had judged it in the first 15 minutes, I would have completely misunderstood it. Around the 30-minute mark, the transformation begins. The spice softens and a creamy mango accord emerges, followed by what I can only describe as coconut milk diluted with ice. It's airy, refreshing and surprisingly realistic. Not coconut sunscreen. Not a tropical cocktail. More like chilled coconut milk in humid tropical air. At its best, it creates a vivid scene: bathing beneath green palm leaves in a tropical jungle, a chilled coconut-mango drink in hand, while freshly cut mango sits nearby with its juice dripping onto the table. There is a subtle greenness running through the composition that keeps the fruit from becoming sweet or artificial. The mango smells ripening and freshly cut rather than sugary. By the heart of the fragrance, a gentle, almost sticky creaminess develops, reminiscent of a fresh, high-end piña colada—rich enough to feel indulgent, yet airy enough to remain elegant. As the fragrance moves into the dry-down, the coconut and fruit gradually step back rather than disappear completely. The fragrance becomes warmer and more comforting, almost like a cup of golden milk with a touch of honey enjoyed as the evening cools. At one point, subtle woody and tobacco-like facets emerge, adding depth and structure, but on my skin they never fully take over. Instead, the scent eventually settles into a creamy, airy skin scent with traces of green freshness and a lingering sweet tropical warmth, like relaxing on a terrace after sunset while the wooden deck still holds the heat of the day. What fascinated me was how differently it behaved across my skin. On cooler areas, the creamy coconut and milky texture lingered. Over warmer pulse points, the fragrance became spicier, greener and woodier. What impressed me most is that the fragrance never truly stops evolving. Just when I thought I understood it, a new facet would emerge. It feels alive on the skin in a way that many modern fragrances do not. If you're looking for a coconut fragrance that remains tropical from start to finish, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for a fragrance that tells a story and evolves from bright tropical freshness into something warm, creamy and quietly comforting, Moonlight in Heaven is absolutely worth experiencing.

Super cool and effortlessly sexy fragrance. If you want to stand out, wear this. It is so different from most of the scent's DNA. It is sensual, but fresh at the same time. This mango is magical. I dislike gourmand perfumes (because I can't stand people smelling like food), but that's just my personal preference; I'm not saying others should dislike them as well. So, I love that this mango doesn't have a gourmand, "real" smell. Turberose, in combination with mango, makes this perfume more fruity-floral, and citrus notes balance the "milky" quality of coconut. It leans more feminine, but it could be super sexy on a man, too. I like to wear it at night, as the name says, "moonlight", it is bright, amazing for date night, and parties. Every time I wear it, I receive numerous compliments from both men and women. It's not loud, it stays close to the skin, and it's a unique perfume that won't offend anyone. Now, let me tell something to haters. First, this perfume is often sold out on the website, both in the US and Europe. That says a lot. Second, "perfume for above 60 years old" as someone said in the review, - hahahahahaha. Seriously? I'm not sure whether I should even mention such an ignorant person who doesn't know how to describe perfume? I think such comments should be forbidden. It is rude and age discrimination. I know many hot and very modern women above 60. And probably younger, looking, and sexier than the author of that comment. Third, this perfume doesn't smell like sunscreen. I am sorry, but that's just an observation by an incompetent nose. It is creamy, with musk perking in the drydown, giving it a sort of "clean" and "skin" vibe, which is common in skincare products (including SPF). However, in this perfume, there is so much more going on. The projection is modest, which I greatly appreciate. I love perfumes, but not as a slap on my face. And I think that many people dislike it when someone's perfume hits them in their nose, because sometimes (actually quite often) it is not a pleasant feeling, especially with loud perfumes. On the contrary, Moonlight in Heaven is gentle, eternal, and shining without blinding light. Longevity is weak for this price tag. For me, the longevity of the perfume is not an issue; many perfumes I like are not long-lasting, but I can understand how someone might be disappointed. I've heard that many harmful chemicals are used to make some perfumes last longer. If that's true, I would rather reapply perfume than have heavy chemicals on my skin. It's incredibly expensive (like most perfumes, the perfume industry is taking advantage of us), but I enjoy this beauty so much.

Creamy, sweet, coconut milk-ish vibe...layered with another type of sweetness from ripened mango with a tiny bit of citrus undertone. The earthy & nutty nuances from rice blanketed with white floral note (an apparent hint of jasmine was indeed there) is also prominent throughout the wearing. Alluring. Addictive. Absolutely unique for a gourmand scent. Last more than 10 hours on my skin. Projects well for the first 3-4 hours or so. This creation was clearly inspired by Mango & Sticky Rice... ...one of the most well-renowned Thai dessert. I have never talked to the spokesperson of the brand so I am not sure if this is pun-intended... ...but I will let you guys judge. Mango & Sticky Rice in Thai is called 'Khao-Niao-Mamuang' (which is a literal translation where Khao Niao means sticky rice and Mamuang means mango) and the sticky rice appeared in this dessert is cooked with coconut milk instead of water. in Thai we call this type of rice/sticky rice 'Khao-Niao-Moon' or 'Moon Sticky Rice' or in short 'Moon Rice'. Moon here is actually an adjective form of a verb, meaning 'cooked with coconut milk, mostly referring to rice cooking process'. Bangkok, in Thai language, is called 'Krung-Thep-Mahanakorn'...literally translated into The Great Metropolis of Gods. Which, contextually, also simply means Heaven or Paradise... (because that is where all the Gods are). I am suspecting the name of this fragrance is a wordplay intended to hint the audience the origin of the scent; This thing is 'Moon Rice (and Mango) in (or from) Bangkok' 1. Combining 1 & 2 >>> Moon Rice in (or from) Bangkok = Moonlight in Heaven Kilian Hennessy himself visited Thailand in the beginning of 2016, for the official opening of By Kilian stores. The scent was also launched in 2016. You do the math...

I don't want to like this as much as I do. For one it's pricey, but I also find the brand image kind of offputting. It feels very "influencer." But I'm won over by what's inside the bottle. An abstract gourmand, based on something other than western patisserie, luminous and not too sweet. Tropical but not to the point that I feel like I'm playing dress-up (in my decidedly non-tropical location). Fresh from the grapefruit and pink pepper, drying down to a beautiful ripe mango paired with non-sunscreen subtle coconut and lightly floral jasmine rice, with some salty raspy vetiver in the base. It smells clean. It's not trying to be cerebral or overly complex, nothing about it is challenging. Yet it's not too immature, as escapist perfumes often seem to me. I have a hard time finding perfumes in this register that I love, and this one hits the spot. I would love to find a non-tropical perfume that evokes a similar feel. As it is I'll probably cave and get a bottle when it's on sale, I've been rationing a few samples for years. Lasting power is fine, about six hours. Respectable for a fresh fragrance like this. Projection is such that it would be appropriate to wear in the heat. I see a lot of reviewers docking it for lasting power and projection, but these things vary based on genre! You don't want a powerhouse when it's 85 degrees and humid. Appropriate for all occasions other than work and ultra-formal settings. Chokedee is nuttier, more of a photorealistic coconut rice, and lacks the freshness of citrus, pink pepper, and mango. For me that makes it less appealing, but if you're mainly after a coconut rice perfume then give it a sample.
